The hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is a promising reaction with a possible practical application as a means of generating hydrogen. The efficiency of hydrogen production can be enhanced significantly by use of a catalyst during the reaction. Cobalt borides show significant catalytic activity, but unsupported CoB particles aggregate easily and are difficult to separate from the reaction medium for re-use. The objectives of the present study were to use halloysite (Hly) as a support material to increase the catalytic activity and reusability of a Co metal-based system and to investigate the binary effect of metal loading and reaction parameters on the hydrolysis of NaBH4. Catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation and chemical reduction. The surface morphology and structural properties of the prepared catalysts were characterized using N2 adsorption-desorption and the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize metal loading and reaction conditions for the hydrogen-generation rate. Optimum reaction conditions were determined (using Design Expert 7.0 software) as 5.01 wt.% Co loading using a Co-B/Hly-supported catalyst, 0.44 M NaBH4, 10.66 mg catalyst, and at a reaction temperature of 39.96°C. The maximum hydrogen generation rate was 33,854 mL min−1 gCo−1 under these conditions.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization of natural and intercalated smectites is usually limited to the apparent d-value estimated from the peak maxima in the raw data. This can lead to the misinterpretation of the measured data. In the case of XRD, the interference function is modulated by instrumental factors (Lorentz-polarization factor, diffraction geometry) and physical factors (structure factor, surface roughness effect). These effects lead to diffraction profile distortions, depending on the diffraction angle and peak full width at half maximum (FWHM). As a result, the diffraction profiles for structures with large line broadening (FWHM > 1°) exhibit a significant peak shift (Δd ∼ 1.5 Å), especially at low angles (2θ ≤ 10°). The present work deals with the detailed analysis of all these effects, their corrections and their consequences for the interpretation of diffraction patterns (including possible errors in determining lattice parameters or the structure model). The investigated materials were montmorillonites (MMT) intercalated with hydroxy-Al polymers. Diffraction profile analysis revealed the corrected d-values and showed that the intercalated sample is not a mixed-layered structure. As a result a structural model of the interlayer is presented.

A series of clay minerals with a 7A series of reflections has been shown to exist in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system. It has been demonstrated both on synthetic and natural samples that these minerals are polymorphous with the 14A-series chlorite minerals. Widespread occurrence of these minerals in nature is expected. The polymorphic relationship found clarifies the whole picture of the isomorphism of the chlorites. The problem of nomenclature of these 7 A series minerals is examined and the term “septechlorites” hesitantly proposed.

On the basis of some experimental work it is shown that the currently adopted procedure for the identification of chlorites is not generally valid, and that the factors of time, temperature, composition and particle size are of crucial importance in such procedures.

Beginning with the work of Ladd in 1898, much has been written about the kaolins of the Southeast, with maximum coverage on the deposits of greatest economic value. Early studies were, of necessity, general in nature but also contain excellent detailed descriptions. In the past 15 years increased demands for kaolins to meet specific requirements have resulted in a large amount of detailed research, much of it unpublished. This paper attempts to review the available information placing emphasis upon the geologic and mineralogical data and the interpretation thereof with respect to the occurrence, detailed character and variability, and probable origin of the clay deposits.

The commercial deposits of kaolin clay discussed herein lie throughout the sands of the Upper Cretaceous Tuscaloosa formation and are localized in a narrow belt along the southeast edge of the “fall line” from Macon, Georgia, to Aiken, South Carolina. The kaolin lenses are irregular in shape, size and purity, ranging from a few feet to a mile in length, and up to 50 ft in thickness. Variability within the lenses is a function of (1) the concentration and localization of non-clay materials (quartz, mica, gibbsite, pyrite, lignite; Fe2O3, TiO2, MnO), (2) the montmorillonite content, (3) the particle size and X-ray crystallinity of the kaolinite, and (4) the texture of the clay aggregate. These mineralogical, chemical and textural variables are not homogeneously distributed but reveal and help to explain differences between samples, layers, pits and the important hard and soft clay types of the region.

Many environmental applications in the inorganic remediation field are based on the swelling and ion-exchange capacities of smectites, even though these can be affected by hydrothermal treatment in water and acidic media. Here a systematic study of the properties of layered silicates that could affect their hydrothermal stability at different pH is described: type of layers, octahedral occupancy, layer charge, and origin of the layer charge. The silicates studied were selected on the basis of their different characteristics associated with these properties. Kanemite (1:0 phyllosilicate), kaolinite (1:1 phyllosilicate), and pyrophyllite and talc (2:1 phyllosilicates with no-layer charge) were examined in order to determine the effect of layer structure, whereas the hydrothermal reactivity of silicates with different layer charge was analyzed by comparing the talc-hectorite-Laponite® and talc-saponite-trioctahedral vermiculite series. Samples were treated hydrothermally at 300ºC for 48 h in pure water and in a 0.01 M HNO3 solution and the final products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. All layered silicates, except for kanemite, were found to remain intact after hydrothermal treatment in water and acidic media, with only minimal short-range structural changes observed. The extent of the structural changes depended on the octahedral sheet occupancy (greater extent) and the number of isomorphic substitutions (lesser extent), both of which weaken the structure.

Fe-reducing micro-organisms can change the oxidation state of structural Fe in clay minerals. The interactions with complex clays and clay minerals in natural materials remain poorly understood, however. The objective of this study was to determine if Fe(III) in loess was available as an electron acceptor and to study subsequent mineralogical changes. The loess samples were collected from St. Louis (Peoria), Missouri, USA, and Huanxia (HX) and Yanchang (YCH), in the Shanxi Province of China. The total Fe concentrations for the three samples was 1.69, 2.76, and 3.29 wt.%, respectively, and Fe(III) content was 0.48, 0.69, and 1.27 wt.%, respectively. All unreduced loess sediments contained Fe (oxyhydr)oxides and phyllosilicates. Bioreduction experiments were performed using Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 with lactate as the sole electron donor and Fe(III) in loess as the sole electron acceptor with and without anthraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS) as an electron shuttle. Experiments were performed in non-growth (bicarbonate buffer) and growth (M1) media. The unreduced and bioreduced solids were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy. Despite many similarities among the three loess samples, the extent and rate of Fe(III) reduction varied significantly. In the presence of AQDS the extent of reduction in the non-growth experiment was 25% of total Fe(III) in HX, 34% in Peoria, and 38% in YCH. The extent of reduction in the growth experiment was 72% in HX, 94% in Peoria, and 65% in YCH. The extent of bioreduction was less in the absence of AQDS. Overall, AQDS and the M1 growth medium significantly enhanced the rate and extent of bioreduction. Fe(III) in (oxyhydr)oxides and phyllosilicates was bioreduced. Siderite was absent in control samples, but was identified in bioreduced samples. The present research suggests that Fe(III) in loess sediments is an important potential source of electron acceptors that could support microbial activity under favorable conditions.

The island-arc volcanics situated in the eastern part of the Căpîlnaş-Techereu nappe (South Apuseni Mountains, Romania) were studied to evaluate the temperature, fluid properties, and mineral chemistry during low-temperature metamorphism. Detailed observations of metamorphic mineral assemblages were conducted using powder X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe. The metamorphism involved albitization of plagioclase feldspar and the formation of mafic phyllosilicates, zeolites, and other hydrous Ca-Al-silicate minerals. Mafic phyllosilicates consisted of transitional dioctahedral-trioctahedral smectites, mixed-layer chlorite-smectite (C/S, 6–96% chlorite), and discrete chlorite. The zeolites were analcime, stilbite ± stellerite, heulandite, laumontite, epistilbite, and mordenite. Also present, as secondary minerals filling amygdales and veins, are prehnite, pumpellyite, and secondary amphibole. Two mineral assemblages were identified which provide important information about metamorphic conditions (temperature, reaction progress, and fluid properties): (1) heulandite + analcime + quartz; and (2) laumontite + albite + quartz + prehnite + pumpellyite ± amphibole. The types of and relations between minerals in the first assemblage suggest the occurrence of low-temperature hydrothermal metamorphism in the zeolite facies at ~125°C, whereas the second assemblage was metamorphosed at 200°C. The composition and variability of the mineral assemblages in the study area suggest that, due to slow reaction rates, the low-temperature transformations and mineral assemblages were influenced not only by temperature but also by local rock composition, fluid-rock ratio, and fluid chemistry.

Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid, non-destructive technique capable of characterizing mineral and organic components within geologic materials at spatial scales that range from μm to km. The degree to which reflectance spectra can be used to provide quantitative information about organic compounds remains poorly understood, particularly for rocks with low organic content that are common in the Earth’s ancient rock record and that may be present on other planetary bodies, such as Mars. In the present study, reflectance spectra (0.35–25 μm) were acquired for a suite of Proterozoic shales and the kerogen was isolated to assess how spectral properties of aliphatic and aromatic C-H absorption bands can be used to predict organic matter abundance (total organic content, TOC, and H/C ratio). A number of spectral parameters were evaluated for organic absorption bands observed in the 3–4 μm wavelength region for comparison with independently measured TOC and H/C values. Ratios of the strengths of aliphatic to aromatic absorption bands were directly correlated to H/C values, but the reflectance spectra for pure kerogens with H/C < 0.2 lacked clear evidence for C-H absorption bands in this spectral region. Organic absorption bands are routinely observed for bulk rock powders with >1 wt.% TOC, but the detection limits of reflectance spectra for TOC may be <1 wt.% or as high as 10 wt.%. Organic detection limits for reflectance spectra are, thus, controlled by both TOC and H/C values, but these parameters can be predicted for clay-rich, kerogen-dominated samples for a range of values that are relevant to drill cores, outcrops, meteorites, and planetary surfaces.

A nickel hydroxide-vermiculite complex (NHVC) with csinβ = 1.41 nm and particle sizes from 0.075 to 0.15 mm was obtained hydrothermally by adding nickel nitrate solution to vermiculite from Transvaal, South Africa. The quantity of nickel hydroxide included in NHVC was controlled by adjusting the concentration of the nickel nitrate solution. The thermal behavior of NHVC at 450°C or above was independent of the Ni content. However, small differences exist in the dehydration behavior of NHVC below 450°C. One-dimensional Fourier electron density analysis of the NHVC structure containing 2.43 mol of Ni per half unit cell showed that Ni cations occupy the interlayer of NHVC, and 10% of the total Ni cations is in the ditrigonal cavity of the basal-oxygen plane of the tetrahedral sheet.

It has been recognized for many years that many aspects of clay technology including soil treatment and drilling mud treatment must remain in an essentially empirical state until a basis for the understanding of ion exchange reactions is established.

Much of the work on ion exchange reactions of clays in the past has been directed toward establishing total exchange capacities or determining the ionic distribution empirically. This information in general is not suitable for the evaluation of hypotheses designed to provide a basis for understanding the exchange reaction. When the techniques for characterizing the various clay minerals offered the possibility of quantitative study, the solution and exchanger phase contributions to the ionic distribution could be experimentally evaluated in principle. The particular experimental techniques which have been used to measure ionic distribution, however, frequently neglected observations which are essential if the data are to he used for testing and developing theories of ion exchange. It is now well recognized that molecular adsorption, complex ion formation in solution, and ion-pair formation between a mobile solution ion and a fixed exchanger group may occur in addition to the ion exchange reaction. Therefore, if the data are to be useful to develop theories of ion exchange, the whole system must be selected to minimize such extraneous contributions. On the basis of recent theoretical work, various experimental techniques art; evaluated from the point of view of their suitability for equilibrium ion distribution studies.

The mass action, adsorption isotherm, and Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium formulations of the ion exchange theory are discussed as they may apply to clay systems. Recent progress is summarized in (1) solution thermodynamics of mixed electrolytes as it is relevant to ion exchange processes of clays, (2) the contributions of non-ideality of the clay exchanger phase, and (S) the work of swelling of clays which affects the ionic distributions in ion exchange reactions.

It is concluded that the parameters which relate to the solid phase of the exchanger and those which relate to the solution are now sufficiently well recognized that future experiments can be planned which may more realistically provide an experimental basis for understanding the process of equilibrium ion exchange distributions in aqueous clay-electrolyte systems.

The adsorption mechanism of iso-propylammonium (PAH+), the cationic component of Roundup, by various homoionic montmorillonites and the structures of the associations obtained in the interlayer space were investigated, using infrared, X-ray, and carbon analysis methods. Adsorption from aqueous and ethanol solutions of Roundup was studied. The infrared spectra were compared with those obtained by the treatment of montmorillonites with ethanol and CCl4 solutions of the free iso-propylamine (PA). The adsorption of PA from ethanol gives rise to protonation of the amine. PA sorbed from CCl4 solution forms an ammonium-amine association. Adsorption of PAH+ from alcohol solution of Roundup occurs by the mechanism of cation exchange. With transition metal exchangeable cations, PAH+ is sorbed in excess, forming hydrogen bonds between NH3+ groups and hydroxyls resulting from dissociation of water molecules. The process of adsorption of PAH+ from aqueous solutions of Roundup depends on the concentration of the solution. If montmorillonite is reacted with 0.5% solution of Roundup, PAH+ is adsorbed by exchanging metal cations and the adsorption capacity of the clay does not exceed the c.e.c. If the montmorillonite is reacted with 5.0% solution of Roundup, the PAH+ exchanges protons originating from the hydrolysis of the interlayer water. Protons which are transferred from the interlayer space to the water solution are accepted by the anion component of Roundup. The amounts of PAH+ adsorbed from concentrated Roundup solutions are much higher than the cation exchange capacity of montmorillonite. Hydrogen bonds are formed between the ammonium and water or hydroxyl groups on the interlayer space. With the trivalent exchange ions Al and Fe, which tend to polymerize in the interlayer space, excess sorption gives rise to hydrogen bonding of NH3+ to oxygen of the polymer.

The crystal structure of bannisterite, a modulated, mica-like mineral species, of general composition Ca0.5(K,Na)0.5(Mn,Fe,Mg,Zn)10(Si,Al)16O38(OH)8·nH2O, has been solved and refined for specimens from Franklin Furnace, New Jersey (FF), and Broken Hill, Australia (BH). The crystals are mono-clinic in space group A2/a, with (for FF) a = 22.265(1) Å, b = 16.368(1) Å, c = 24.668(2) Å, β = 94.285(5)°; and (for BH) a = 22.286(1) Å, b = 16.386(1) Å, c = 24.575(2) Å, β = 94.355(7)°; Z = 8. Refinement with anisotropic thermal factors reached Rw = 0.034 (FF) and 0.039 (BH). Like stilpnomelane and ganophyllite, bannisterite has a modified 2:1 trioctahedral layer structure in which some of the tetrahedra are inverted towards the interlayer region and linked to inverted tetrahedra in the opposite layer. The octahedral sheet is strongly corrugated along b. The tetrahedral sheet consists of 5-, 6-, and 7-fold rings, and bond distance calculations indicate that Al is concentrated into two of the four inverted tetrahedra. The interlayer Ca, K, and H2O species are highly disordered, as indicated by anomalously large temperature factors and partial occupancies. Localized differences in the Al/Si arrangements in the inverted tetrahedra induce disorder among the interlayer cations.

Field and experimental studies were performed to understand the formation conditions of the Nettetal zeolite deposit, Laach volcanic area, Germany. This deposit shows pronounced small- (cm) and large-scale (tens of meters) variations of zeolitization, despite the same phonolitic precursor glass throughout the occurrence. Zeolitization of the pyroclastic ash flow is restricted to three distinct layers that are 0.15 to 10 m thick and separated by fresh ash. The glassy matrix is altered to chabazite, phillipsite, analcime and K-feldspar in various combinations, whereas the pumice clasts are altered predominantly to chabazite. Mass changes during zeolite formation appear to be small, and Ca enrichment in chabazite and phillipsite may have occurred after their formation by cation exchange.

The zeolites and zeolite assemblages observed in the Nettetal deposit were experimentally reproduced by reacting the phonolitic glass at 100–200°C with distilled water and 0.01 M alkaline solutions as well as with varying solid/liquid ratios and grain-sizes. Chabazite and phillipsite represented metastable transition phases with respect to analcime and K-feldspar. A high solid/liquid ratio accelerated the conversion of glass to zeolites.

None of the classic models of zeolite formation is fully applicable to the Nettetal deposit. The most probable environment for zeolitization in this deposit is the stagnant fringe water zone immediately above the groundwater table. In this zone, representing a relatively closed system, favorable solution compositions for zeolite formation could have been developed rather quickly by glass-water interaction, which is not possible within the more thoroughly flushed deeper parts of the groundwater system. The three distinct zeolite layers are probably the result of temporarily changing groundwater levels.

Nacrite, dickite and intermediate dickite-nacrite phases have been identified from the upper Paleozoic sequences of the Maláguide Complex (Betic Cordilleras, Spain). Nacrite developed as euhedral, pseudohexagonal or elongated crystals within sandstones and thin, irregular veins. Dickite developed preferently within extensive zones of fractures as very irregular, compact packets. Intermediate phases occurred in the sandstones and veins similar to the nacrite, or accompanying dickite. The mineral assemblage of the sandstones includes quartz-muscovite-kaolinite-type minerals, with or without albite, carbonates, chlorite and mixed-layers containing chlorite. The metamorphic conditions in which these minerals formed belong to anchizone, as can be deduced from the IC values. Dickite, nacrite and intermediate phases were studied by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and micros-copy. The results for dickite indicate a well-ordered mineral and agree with most of the published data. Conversely, IR spectra and DTA curves of nacrite show some differences in relation to the available data for this mineral. Based on the comparison with dickite and nacrite data, intermediate phases can be interpreted either as disordered varieties or as mixed-layered dickite/nacrite.

The molecular aggregation of organic dyes onto clay mineral particles is a very complex phenomenon including dye adsorption, the migration of dye molecules, rearrangement of initially formed aggregates, etc. Some details of this complex process are not yet fully understood. The objective of the present study was to understand the influence of dye surface concentration on the dynamic processes in dye molecular aggregation. A stopped-flow rapid mixing device was used for accurate measurements of the molecular aggregation of the cationic dye rhodamine 123 (R123) in montmorillonite (MntK) colloidal dispersions. The influence of dye surface concentration, which was changed by altering the ratio of the amount of R123 to the mass of MntK (nR123/mMntK), was examined in detail. Chemometric analysis was used to reconstruct the spectral matrix to obtain linearly uncorrelated spectral profiles of the major components and their concentrations at the respective reaction times. The conversion of isolated R123 cations into oblique J-aggregates (head-to-tail molecular assemblies) was observed over time and the existence of a J-dimers intermediate was hypothesized. The reaction kinetics followed a biphasic exponential function. An unexpected effect of dye surface concentration on R123 aggregation was observed: the initial formation of the molecular aggregates increased significantly with dye surface concentration, but an inverse trend was observed after longer reaction times. While dye aggregates were formed slowly at low dye loadings, systems with high R123/MntK ratios (nR123/mMntK) reached spectral stability after the first few seconds of the reaction. After longer reaction times, the greatest degree of dye aggregation was achieved in the dispersion of the lowest dye loading. Such a phenomenon is described for the first time. The results presented here are important for understanding the complex processes occurring in systems based on organic cations and clay minerals, and should be considered in the development of functional hybrid materials of dyes and nanoparticles with a layered structure.

The reaction of hydroxy-Al interlayers in montmorillonite with monosilicic acid was studied by chemical analysis, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Hydroxy-Al interlayers in montmorillonite was prepared by treating Ca-montmorillonite (<2) μm) with hydroxy-Al solutions at an initial Al concentration of 0.5 mM and OH/Al molar ratios of 1.0, 2.0, and 2.5. The resultant partially interlayered montmorillonite was reacted with 0.5, 0.9, and 1.4 mM monosilicic acid solutions.

A substantial amount of monosilicic acid was adsorbed by the interlayer hydroxy-Al polymers through the reaction of Si-OH groups with mainly Al-OH groups, resulting in the formation of silicated Al-interlayers with Si/Al molar ratios up to 0.19. The adsorption of silicic acid by interlayer hydroxy-Al polymers increased the basal spacings of the partially interlayered montmorillonite. This effect was most pronounced for the hydroxy-Al interlayered montmorillonite formed in the systems at an OH/Al ratio of 2.0, in which the d(001) reflections (110°C) shifted from 13.6 Å before silication to 14.1 Å with a shoulder at 17.0 Å after silication. The differential IR spectrum of the silicated hydroxy-Al interlayers in montmorillonite exhibited absorption bands at 935 and 3730 cm−1, which can be assigned to Si-O and Si-OH, respectively, of the adsorbed Si(OH)4. An interlayer structure analogous to that of “proto-imogolite” was, thus, proposed for the silicated interlayer hydroxy-Al polymers in montmorillonite. This study revealed a new mechanism through which Si enters the interlayer spaces of smectite. The silication of hydroxy-Al-interlayered clays in natural environments and the related modifications in surface properties of the clays should receive increasing attention.

The influence of Mn2+ on the formation of Fe oxides at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0 and varying Mn/Fe molar ratios (0, 0.1, 1.0, and 10.0) in the FeCl2-NH4OH and FeSO4-NH4OH systems was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared absorption, transmission electron microscopic, and chemical analyses. In the absence of Mn2+, lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) were the crystalline species formed at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively, in the FeCl2 system, whereas lepidocrocite and goethite (α-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite were the crystalline species formed at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively, in the FeSO4 system. The amount of Mn coprecipitated with Fe (as much as 8.1 mole % in the FeCl2 system and 15.0 mole % in the FeSO4 system) increased as the initial solution Mn/Fe molar ratio increased from 0 to 10.0, resulting in the perturbation of the crystallization processes of the hydrolytic products of Fe formed. At pH 6.0, the perturbation led to the formation of poorly ordered lepidocrocite, as reflected in the increasing broadening of its characteristic peaks in the XRD patterns. At pH 8.0, poorly ordered iepidocrocite and a honessite-like mineral (Mn-Fe-SO4-H2O) formed in the FeCl2 and FeSO4 systems, respectively.
