A procedure for the determination of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the amounts of exchangeable cations adsorbed to montmorillonite is proposed. The method consists of a single incubation of the clay in a suspension containing a low concentration of an organic dye of large binding affinity, followed by analysis of the displaced inorganic cations by inductively-coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICPES). The CEC is obtained by taking the largest sum of displaced exchangeable cations. Montmorillonite suspensions were incubated with methylene blue (MB) or crystal violet (CV) at dye concentrations below 4 mM, for one, three or fourteen days. For total dye concentrations up to the CEC, all the dye was adsorbed and equivalent amounts of exchangeable cations were released. Both dyes could adsorb to the clay in excess of the CEC.

After one day of incubation in the presence of dye concentrations of about 50% in excess of the CEC, the total amounts of cations released were reduced to below the CEC. This reduction was interpreted as due to massive aggregation of the clay particles induced by the dye. With CV the total amounts of cations released after three or fourteen days of incubation increased and became equal to the CEC.

The same CEC was found for Na-, Ca- and SWy1 crude-montmorillonite, by employing either of the dyes.

Several new minerals, structurally and chemically similar to the hydrotalcite-manasseite group, have been found in the saline deposits of the central pre-Caspian depression and in those of Middle Asia. Their structures consist of layers of (Mg1-xAlx)(OH)2 plus interlayers of anions and molecular water. In addition to manasseite itself, [(Mg4Al2)(OH)12][(CO3)-3H2O], having unit-cell parameters of a = 3.042, c = 2 × 7.56= 15.12 Å and a calculated density of Dc = 2.15 g/cm3, other varieties were identified whose interlayers contain alternately SO42− or SO42− and CO32− anions. The following new phases were recognized: (1) an 8.85-Å phase having the composition [(Mg4Al2)(OH)12][(SO4)·3H2O], subcell dimensions of a' = 3.04, c' = 8.85 Å, and Dc = 1.96 g/cm3; (2) an 11-Å phase having the composition [(Mg3.96Fe0.06Al1.98)(OH)12][Na0.56(SO4)1.30·7.3H2O], hexagonal unit-cell parameters of a = √3 · 3.042 = 5.28 Å, c = 11.16 Å, and Dc = 1.90 g/cm3; (3) a 16.5-Å mixed-layer phase having the composition [(Mg4Al2)(OH)12][(SO4)0.5(CO3)0.5·3H2O] and an ordered ABAB... alternation of 7.56-Å layers (i.e., a brucite-like layer + a CO32−-containing interlayer) and 8.94-Å layers containing SO42− anions in interlayers; this phase has unit-cell dimensions of a' = 3.05, c' = 16.5 Å and Dc = 2.06 g/cm3; and (4) an 18.5-Å ordered mixed-layer phase having the ideal composition [(Mg8Al4)(OH)24][M+0.5(SO4)1.25(CO3)1.0·9H2O] and an alternation of 7.56-Å, CO3-containing layers and 11-Å layers having SO42− anions and Na and Mg cations in interlayers (M+0.5 corresponds to interlayer cations). This last phase has unit-cell dimensions of a = 3.046, c = 3 × 18.54 = 55.62 Å and Dc = 1.99 g/cm3. Some of the varieties containing SO42− in the interlayers swelled with ethylene glycol or glycerol.

For this diverse family of minerals whose structures are based on brucite-like layers of the composition (R2+1-xR3+x)(OH)2, a unifying system of nomenclature is offered for consideration. In describing these brucite-like structures intercalated with anion- and cation-containing interlayers, the composition of the hydroxide sheet and the interlayers, the periodicity of the layers, and the mixed-layer nature of the material should be described. By means of symbols, a single term might be used to describe the crystal chemistry of any member of the group having a given cation composition for the brucite-like layers, for example, manasseite, a 2H polytype of hydrotalcite that has a repeat distance of 7.56 Å and CO3-containing interlayers, might be designated as 7.56-Å CO3-hydrotalcite-2H.

A series of hydrothermal experiments was performed to determine the effect of fluid abundance on the reaction of smectite to illite. Experiments were conducted on K-saturated montmorillonite (<0.1-µm fraction) in a closed system at 250° to 400°C using run times of 1, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days at 100 MPa (1 kbar) pressure. In fluid-deficient systems (pore spaces not saturated), the rate and extent of illitization was significantly inhibited. A rock: water ratio of 20:1 (mass: mass) produced an R0 illite/smectite (I/S) having 82% smectite layers after 60 days at 250°C, whereas a rock: water ratio of 1:1 produced an I/S having 57% smectite layers under the same conditions. The effect became less pronounced at higher temperatures, with the 20:1 and the 1:1 experimental products differing by only 11% expandability at 400°C after 60 days. In addition, the low-fluid experiments produced fewer crystalline byproducts (quartz, cristobalite, chlorite) than did the fluid-rich runs, and the I/S was more difficult to disperse and orient in the fluid-deficient samples, suggesting enhanced cementation at grain contacts or the production of particle morphologies that did not lend themselves to orientation. The difference in reactivity of the smectite and I/S as a function of water content appears to be attributable to the reduced capacity for low volumes of water to mediate the dissolution, solute transport, and precipitation reactions that make up the series of reactions collectively termed illitization. Of these variables, solute transport is likely to be affected most by reduction of fluid.

The adsorption of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) in smectite was studied by adsorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Smectites that had reacted for 48 h with HDTMA cations equivalent to 0.2–3.0 times the cation exchange capacity (CEC) were converted to HDTMA-exchanged smectites with various d-spacings. Study of HDTMA-smectites by HRTEM suggests that the HDTMA adsorption results in interlayer expansion with various d-spacings and irregular wavy layer structures. We believe that HDTMA loading beyond the CEC of smectite affects the structure of clay by the additional adsorption of HDTMA-Br− via hydrophobic bonding. Surfactant orientation probably depends on the quantity of surfactant in the interlayer. Our TEM study shows that the structure of the adsorbed HDTMA layer in the interlayers of smectite depends on the charge distribution and chemical composition of smectite.

The acidic properties of acid-modified montmorillonite and vermiculite were determined by pyridine and ammonia adsorption to correlate with the alkylating and dehydrating activity of the activated samples. Treatment of the minerals with different concentrations of hydrochloric acid results in the variation of overall acidity and density of acidic sites. Infrared (IR) spectral and differential scanning calorimetric analyses have revealed the presence of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites on the activated samples. The catalytic activity towards the above reaction has been correlated to the acid strength and density of Lewis acid sites. Treatment of montmorillonite with hydrochloric acid in the range of 0.1 and 0.3 M and vermiculite with 0.2 to 0.3 M seemed to be suitable for the conversion of methanol into olefin-rich hydrocarbons. Acid-activated montmorillonite catalyzed the isopropylation of benzene to a maximum extent of 16%, whereas acid-activated vermiculite gave a maximum conversion of only 4%.

Investigation of the organization of interlayer water and cations in smectite is a permanent topic in clay science for environmental science, civil engineering, materials science, and industrial applications. Experimental X-ray (or neutron) diffraction methods and molecular simulations are key techniques to probe the organization of the smectite structure at a similar molecular length scale. The combination of both of these experimental and numerical methods represents a complementary approach to reveal the structural heterogeneity of real samples, design and model a wide range of smectite structures, and validate the simulation results through comparison with experimental data.

This paper first revisits establishment of the original interlayer model as developed in the 1930s for the organization of water and ions in the smectite structure using X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Then, based on a simplified approach, key theoretical tools are provided to calculate XRD pattern 00l reflections for a periodic smectite structure with a wide range of interlayer compositions and organizations using conventional spreadsheet software. In addition to educational purposes, this theoretical description is used to describe the principal parameters governing the positions and intensities of experimental XRD 00l reflections. This calculation toolbox is also used to determine better the layer-to-layer distances considered in molecular simulations and to validate these simulations through a detailed collation procedure using experimental data.

Recent examples of the application of such a procedure to collate experimental diffraction data and molecular simulations are presented for the specific case of deciphering the molecular organization of interlayer water and cations in the different smectite hydrates (mono-, bi-, and tri-hydrated layers). The extension of this approach to the interlayer refinement of organo-clays is also detailed, and perspectives regarding the characterization of other lamellar compounds are discussed.

Well-characterized American Petroleum Institute clay standards, source clays from The Clay Minerals Society, and other secondary minerals were used to determine the effects of U concentration, temperature, and solution composition on U-sorption properties. Uranium concentrations ranged from about 1.00 × 10−4 M to 4.00 × 10−7 M, temperatures from 5° to 65°C and solution compositions containing 0.01 M NaCl and 0.01 M NaHCO3. Silica gel efficiently sorbed uranyl carbonate anion complexes. The higher cation-exchange capacity materials most readily sorbed uranyl ions from the 0.01 M NaCl solution. Temperature increases tended to affect uranyl ion sorption adversely except when the U was present as carbonate complexes. Noncrystalline ferric oxyhydroxides sorbed uranyl ions much more efficiently than any of the secondary crystalline minerals studied. A method for accurately extrapolating U-sorption efficiencies between experimental points based on the Freundlich equation is presented.

A correlation was made of crystallochemical data from 15 smectites with the half time of dissolution (t05) in 6 N hydrochloric acid at 96°C. From this the relation

ln t05 = 3.95 - 1.96 FeVI - 2.30 MgVI

was developed. It shows a remarkable dependence of the apparent dissolution rate of the octahedral layer of the smectites on the substitution of Fe3+ and Mg2+ for Al+3 in the octahedral position.

The morphology of illite/smectite (I/S) from deeply buried bentonites and hydrothermally altered Tertiary volcanic rocks from Japan changes in parallel with the proportion of expandable layers in the I/S. As viewed by scanning electron microscopy, the morphologies range from the typical “cornflake,” “maple leaf,” or “honeycomb” habit of smectite to the typical platy or scalloped (with curled points) habit of illite. Although the changes are more subtle near either end member, at a composition of 60-70% illite layers, the morphology changes from sponge-like or cellular to platy or ribbon-like. The change of morphology at this composition correlates with a change in layer stacking from turbostratic to rotational ordering of the 1Md type. Turbostratic stacking can be thought of as randomly distributed translations of successive layers by any magnitude and in any direction. The rotationally ordered structure, which allows nearly precise juxtaposition of quasihexagonal oxygen surfaces from adjacent layers, probably permits more crystalline regularity in the a-b plane, which promotes a more plate-like or sheet-like habit.

Weathered perthite and mixed muscovite-kaolinite from a kaolinitic granite at Trial Hill in east Queensland and kaolinized sericitic alteration from a granite from the Ardlethan Tin Mine of New South Wales were examined by optical, scanning electron (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to determine the alteration process of muscovite to kaolinite and kaolinite to halloysite (7Å). Muscovite was found intimately interleaved with kaolinite in a variety of proportions on a sub-micrometer scale. The contact was generally parallel to the (001) layers of both minerals, and the thickness of the contact layer alternated between 10 and 7 Å over short distances. Where the kaolinite to muscovite contact was at an acute angle to the muscovite layers, a small angle existed between the layering of the two phases, consistent with a topotactic alteration of muscovite to kaolinite. One tetrahedral sheet in the muscovite appeared to have been removed over 50–100 Å, converting a 10-Å layer to a 7-Å layer. The mica near the contact with kaolinite was easily damaged in the electron beam and showed Al loss during analytical transmission electron microscopy; thus, H3O+ probably substituted for K+ in this transitional phase.

An SEM examination of completely weathered plagioclase showed kaolinite plates having attached, parallel, polygonal rods of halloysite (7Å), which had planar sides and a central void, partly fused with the surfaces of the kaolinite crystals. TEM study showed that the kaolinite altered to halloysite, and that, where the kaolinite was partly altered to halloysite, a series of sharp kinks were present in the kaolinite plate in which alteration had occurred. These kinks were interspersed with linear kaolinite relics, 0.1–0.2 μm long, which appear to have provided local rigidity to the clay packet. Apparently, the altered clay first curled into loosely wound spirals, which ranged in cross-section from triangles to irregular octagons, with pentagons and hexagons being most common. The tendency to pentagons and hexagons compares well with a statistical study of the angles, which were most commonly grouped around 120°. As alteration of the kaolinite relics progressed, the linear parts of the spiral lost their rigidity and became circular or oval shaped. The long axis of the halloysite spirals was parallel to the X axis of the kaolinite. Halloysite spirals formed most readily if they had space to curl; if space was not available, the halloysite formed sheaves. Rare, thin layers of muscovite were present projecting through kaolinite into halloysite. Where muscovite relics reached open spaces, the 10-Å structure expanded to 14 Å.

The limitations of existing methods for the prediction of swelling behavior of compacted soils are examined. Both the purely theoretical approach and the purely empirical approach are found to be inadequate. The present study is based on a semi-empirical approach in which a model of swelling behavior is developed leading to equations relating swelling potential or swelling pressure of a compacted soil to its plasticity index, clay content and initial molding water content. The model is based on the concepts of the diffuse double layer, modified by introducing empirical constants to account for elastic swelling effects and other limitations involved in the direct application of double layer theory to real soils. The empirical constants are evaluated from the results of experimental investigations carried out on a large number of soil samples representing a wide variation of clay content as well as consistency limits.

It is shown that the predicted values of the swelling potential and swelling pressure based on the proposed model agree closely with the experimental results of this study and those reported in the literature. Furthermore, the equations developed in this study are of a more general nature and appear to be applicable to a larger range of soil types than those previously published.

A well-characterized kaolinite has been hydrated in order to test the hypothesis that platey kaolinite will roll upon hydration. Kaolinite hydrates are prepared by repeated intercalation of kaolinite with potassium acetate and subsequent washing with water. On hydration, kaolinite plates roll along the major crystallographic directions to form tubes identical to proper tubular halloysite. Most tubes are elongated along the b crystallographic axis, while some are elongated along the a axis. Overall, the tubes exhibit a range of crystallinity. Well-ordered examples show a 2-layer structure, while poorly ordered tubes show little or no 3-dimensional order. Cross-sectional views of the formed tubes show both smoothly curved layers and planar faces. These characteristics of the experimentally formed tubes are shared by natural halloysites. Therefore, it is proposed that planar kaolinite can transform to tubular halloysite.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction experiments have been performed on R1 and R> 1 illite/smectite (I/S) samples that from X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) experiments appear to contain well-ordered layer sequences. The HRTEM images confirmed earlier computer image simulations, which suggested that periodicities due to I/S ordering can be imaged in TEM instruments of moderate resolution. The experiments also confirmed that in instruments of this sort, the strongest contrast arising from the compositional difference between I and S layers occurs under rather unusual imaging conditions of strong overfocus. Some selected-area electron diffraction (SAD) patterns showed additional diffraction spots consistent with R1 and R3 ordering. SAD patterns and cross-fringes arising in HRTEM images from non-00l reciprocal lattice rows indicated that the stacking vectors of most adjacent 2:1 layers were not randomly oriented with respect to each other. Thus, the I/S was not fully turbostratic, but instead consisted of very thin, coherently stacked crystallites that extended across the fundamental particles postulated by Nadeau and coworkers.

S/(I + S) ratios were determined for about seventy HRTEM images obtained and interpreted by three different TEM operators. These ratios were consistent with those obtained from standard XRD procedures, suggesting that results obtained by XRD can be used to infer the initial structural state of mixed-layer I/S prior to treatment of samples for XRD experiments. The HRTEM experiments thus demonstrated that the two specimens examined consisted of ordered I/S existing as small crystals, most of which contained more layers than the fundamental particles of Nadeau and coworkers. The non-turbostratic stacking suggests an energetic interaction between the individual fundamental particles, leading to at least two alternative thermodynamic descriptions of these materials. Although the I/S crystals in the present experiments probably were disaggregated into fundamental particles during sample preparation for XRD, the I/S crystals appear to have separated only along the smectite interlayers. If the term “fundamental particle” is to be used for primary, untreated I/S, its original definition should be modified to include not only free particles, but also those that occur as layers within small crystals. It further should be recognized that these particles can interact thermodynamically and crystallographically with their neighbors.

The adsorption on montmorillonite of two monovalent organic cations, methylene blue (MB) and thioflavin T (TFT), was studied in four different situations: (1) separate adsorption of MB or TFT; (2) competitive adsorption of TFT and Cs; (3) competitive adsorption of the two organic cations from their equimolar solutions; and (4) adsorption of TFT on a clay whose cation-exchange capacity (CEC) had been previously saturated with MB. MB and TFT adsorbed to as much as 120% and 140% of the CEC, respectively. Cs did not appear to compete with TFT for the adsorption sites of the clay. TFT molecules adsorbed more strongly than those of MB and displaced them from the clay surface. A model was developed to evaluate the strength of the clay-organic cation interactions. The specific binding of the cations to the negatively charged surface, determined by solving the electrostatic equations, appears to account for adsorption exceeding the CEC and formation of positively charged complexes, which are due to non-coulombic interactions between the organic ligands.

The charge reversal predicted by the model beyond the CEC of the clay was confirmed by microelec-trophoretic experiments. Particles in a sample of montmorillonite loaded with 50 meq TFT/100 g clay moved to the positive electrode, whereas in samples containing the two dyes, MB and TFT, coadsorbed at a total concentration of 100–120 meq/100 g clay, the particles moved to the negative electrode. Binding coefficients describing the formation of neutral and charged complexes of TFT and the clay were larger than those for MB and the clay, thereby explaining the preferential adsorption of TFT observed experimentally. The binding coefficients for the formation of neutral complexes of either MB and TFT and the clay were more than six orders of magnitude larger than those previously reported for inorganic monovalent cations.

The effects of temperature on the swelling properties of smectites are important for a variety of different geological conditions, but studies on this topic have been rather limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the swelling behavior of Na- and Ca-montmorillonite at various temperatures greater than room temperature, up to 150°C, using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. A sample chamber was designed, the temperature and humidity of which were controlled precisely, for environmental in situ measurements. The XRD measurements were performed at small relative humidity (RH) intervals for precise observation of the swelling behavior.

The swelling behavior of Na-montmorillonite showed distinct zero-, one-, and two-layer hydration states. The basal spacings of Na-montmorillonite changed continuously with RH for various temperatures in the transition region between the zero- and one-layer hydration states, and the swelling curves of the transition region moved to greater degrees of RH with increasing temperature. The basal spacings jumped from the one- to two-layer hydration states for all temperatures at almost the same RH.

The basal spacings of Ca-montmorillonite changed continuously from the zero- to the two-layer hydration states at all temperatures. This behavior is remarkably different from that of Na-montmorillonite. At low-RH conditions, the d001 value of Ca-montmorillonite decreased with increasing temperature. The swelling curves of Ca-montmorillonite did not show a plateau at any temperature for the one-layer hydration state. The swelling curves of Ca-montmorillonite moved to greater RH with temperature, similar to the transformation region between the zero- and one-layer hydration states in Na-montmorillonite. These differences between Na- and Ca-montmorillonite are related to the hydration powers of exchangeable cations.

Hydroxy-interlayered minerals (HIMs) are typical of moderately acidic soils. Barnhisel and Bertsch (1989) defined the hydroxy-interlayered clay minerals as a solid-solution series between smectite, vermiculite and pedogenic or aluminous chlorite end-members. Their experimental data for the relationship between the decrease in cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the amount of Al fixed in the interlayers of smectites and vermiculites is reinterpreted using calculated structural, chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) evidence. The adsorbed Al ions are in a 6-fold coordination state: [Al(OH)x(H2O)y](3−x)+ with x+y = 6. The polymerization process occurs before saturation of the exchange sites by Al ions. Some of the adsorbed Al ions form polynuclear cations keeping a constant positive charge.

X-ray diffraction patterns of oriented preparations in the ethylene glycol-solvated state suggest that HIMs consist of randomly interstratified expandable and chlorite-like layers (17 and 14.2 Å). Chlorite-like layers result from the selective adsorption of Al complex ions in specific interlayer zones that behave similarly to Al-chlorite (donbassite-like) with incomplete (60%) ‘gibbsite-like’ sheets (chlorite60). Using this framework, HIM XRD patterns can be interpreted by comparison with calculated chlorite60-dismectite mixed-layer mineral patternss using the NEWMOD software.

The As sorption capacity of a natural Mn and Fe mineral-containing sample from the Iron Quadrangle province, Brazil, was investigated. A detailed mineralogical identification was obtained by combining X-ray diffraction analyses (with Rietveld refinement), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry-EDS. The oxidation state of the adsorbed As species was determined by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the presence of naturally occurring Mn oxides promotes the effective oxidation of As (III) to As(V). Also, the Mn minerals show a significant uptake of both the trivalent and pentavalent As species. This study demonstrates that the combined influences of As(III) depletion by oxidation and adsorption on a natural oxide sample consisting of Mn minerals and Fe oxides may effectively contribute to the reduction the As concentration in waters.

Feroxyhite (δ′-FeOOH) in association with goethite and lepidocrocite was found as a dominant mineral in some rusty precipitates from Finland. These precipitates formed in the interstices of sand grains from rapidly flowing, Fe(II)-containing water which was very quickly oxidized as it flowed through the sediment. The mineral is distinguished from other FeOOH forms and from ferrihydrite mainly by its X-ray powder diffractogram. Further characteristics are an acicular morphology (possibly thin, rolled plates), an internal magnetic field at 4°K of ∼510 kOe, Fe-OH stretching bands at ∼2900 cm−1 and Fe-OH bending bands at 1110, 920, 790, and 670 cm−1, and an oxalate solubility between ferrihydrite and goethite or lepidocrocite. Feroxyhites with very similar properties were synthesized by oxidation of an Fe(II) solution with H2O2 at a pH between 5 and 8.

Hydrotalcite-like layered double hydroxides (LDH), of the formulation M2Al(OH)6(CO3)0.5.H2O, where M = Mg, Zn, Co, Ni, have been prepared, the products characterized and their solubility products measured at ionic strengths of 0.0065 and 0.0128 M and at 25°C. Steady-state solubility was reached after 100 days. The solubility products have been formulated according to the following reaction: $M_2\text{Al}{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_{6}0.5{\text{CO}}_3\cdot {\text{H}}_2\text{O}+6{\text{H}}^{+}\to 2M^{2+}+{\text{Al}}^{3+}+0.5{\text{CO}}_3^{2-}+{\text{H}}_2\text{O}$ where

Average values of Kso for I = 0, estimated using the Davies equation, are 25.43, 20.80, 22.88 and 20.03 for Mg, Zn, Co and Ni, respectively. Model calculations reveal that the thermodynamic stability of the LDHs is greater than that of the corresponding divalent hydroxides for Zn, Co and Ni below a pH of ∼10, 9 and 8, respectively, and at least up to pH 12 for Mg.
