Excavated bentonite from two large iron-bentonite field experiments at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in Sweden was investigated with respect to iron redox chemistry and mineralogy. The iron redox chemistry was studied by Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy and the mineral phases were studied using X-ray diffraction. Bentonite is to be used as a buffer material in high-level radioactive waste repositories to protect the waste containers from their surroundings. Montmorillonite, which is responsible for the sealing properties in the bentonite, is susceptible to redox reactions. A change in the montmorillonite iron redox chemistry may affect its layer charge and hence its properties. The experiments included are the first Alternative Buffer Material test (ABM1) and the Temperature Buffer Test (TBT). The clays were heated to a maximum of ~130°C (ABM1) or ~150°C (TBT) for 2.5 and 7 y, respectively. In the central part of the compacted clay blocks was placed an iron heater and the distance from the heater to the rock was ~10 cm (ABM1) and ~50 cm (TBT), respectively. Eleven different clay materials were included in the ABM1 experiment and five were analyzed here. In the ABM1 experiment, the Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio was increased in several samples from the vicinity of the heater. Kinetic data were collected and showed that most of the Fe(II)-rich samples oxidized rapidly when exposed to atmospheric oxygen. In the TBT experiment the corrosion products were dominated by Fe(III) and no significant increase in Fe(II) was seen. In ABM1, reducing conditions were achieved, at least in parts of the experiment; in TBT, reducing conditions were not achieved. The difference was attributed to the larger scale of the TBT experiment, providing more oxygen after the installation, and to the longer time taken for water saturation; oxidation of the samples during excavation cannot be ruled out. Minor changes in the bentonite mineral phases were found in some cases where direct contact was made with the iron heater but no significant impact on the bentonite performance in high-level radioactive waste applications was expected as a result.

In the Nuussuaq Basin, West Greenland, a thick succession of Tertiary dolerites has penetrated Upper Cretaceous mudstone. The mixed-layer minerals of mudstone core samples have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction, solid-state 29Si and 27A1 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopies, thermal analysis, chemical analysis, stable isotopes (18O/16O), and K/Ar dating. The mixed-layer minerals include for each sample two mixed-layer phases consisting of pyrophyllite, margarite, paragonite, tobelite, illite, smectite and vermiculite layers. The main, 80 m thick intrusion resulted in the formation of pyrophyllite, margarite, paragonite and tobelite layers. However, the tobelite layers are absent in samples <21 m from this intrusion. Furthermore, chlorite was formed and kaolinite destroyed in samples adjacent to minor intrusions and at distances <60 m from the large intrusion. For the first time, the detailed, complex mixed-layer structures formed during contact metamorphism of kaolinitic, oil-forming mudstones have been investigated accurately. The formation of tobelite layers reveals that oil formation has taken place during contact metamorphism. Furthermore, K/Ar dating of mixed-layer minerals from shale indicates that the intrusives are of early Eocene age. The 80 m thick intrusive is responsible for the main mixed-layer transformations, whereas two thin (3 m and 0.5 m thick) intrusions contribute little. Thus, the detailed mixed-layer investigation has contributed significantly to the understanding of the regional geology and the contact metamorphic processes.

Clay minerals and zeolites, candidate backfill minerals for nuclear waste repositories, were treated with saturated NaCl brine and Mg-rich (Mg-Ca-Na-K) brine at 200°C and 300°C for 4 weeks under a confining pressure of 30 MPa. The Al concentrations released in NaCl brine were lower than those in Mg-rich brine at both temperatures indicating that the Mg-rich brine is more acidic than the NaCl brine under these hydrothermal conditions. The Si concentrations in both brines were low because of the relatively acidic conditions developed during the hydrothermal treatment. As determined by X-ray powder diffraction or by specific Cs and Sr sorption measurements, no alteration could be detected in clay minerals treated with NaCl brine at 200°C. Among the zeolites tested, only phillipsite and erionite altered to analcime in NaCl brine at 200°C. Zeolites and most of the clay minerals tested did not alter in the Mg-rich brine treated at 200°C. Vermiculite altered to randomly interstratified vermiculite/K-vermiculite (mica-like) by selective K uptake from the Mg-rich brine.

At 300°C, the clay minerals did not greatly alter, whereas the zeolites altered to analcime and/or albite in the presence of the NaCl brine. In the Mg-rich brine, Al-rich montmorillonite from Wyoming did not alter, whereas Al-poor montmorillonite from Texas altered to randomly interstratified montmorillonite/ illite at 300°C. Vermiculite collapsed to form K-vermiculite (~ 10.2 Å) by the selective uptake of K from the Mg-rich brine at 300°C. Most of the zeolites altered to smectites in the Mg-rich brine at 300°C because of the acidic conditions generated by the hydrolysis of Mg. The selective Cs-sorption Kd decreased from 11,700 for untreated phillipsite to 240 and 15 for the hydrothermally produced analcime/albite mixtures from the phillipsite at 200° and 300°C, respectively, in NaCl brine. These results suggest that montmorillonites and mordenites are relatively more resistant than vermiculite or other zeolites at elevated temperatures and pressures in concentrated hydrothermal brines expected in a salt repository.

Polynuclear Al13 tridecamer species are the major hydrolyzed species of aluminum, but their occurrence in terrestrial environments has not been established. X-ray diffraction (XRD), 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses show that the presence of tartaric acid (concentration range of 10−5–10−3 M), one of the commonly occurring low-molecular-weight organic acids, inhibits the formation of the Al13 tridecamer species.

In the absence of tartaric acid, the basic aluminum sulfate crystals were of tetrahedral morphology and conformed to isometric symmetry with a = 17.748 Å and space group of P4232. Increasing amounts of tartaric acid [tartaric acid/Al molar ratio (R) ranging from 0.01 to 0.05] modified the crystal morphology from the tetrahedral particles of isometric symmetry (R = 0) to rod-shaped particles of monoclinic symmetry (R = 0.01) to irregularly shaped X-ray noncrystalline microparticles (R = 0.05). Failure to detect the presence of Al13 tridecamer, the dominant hydrolyzed species of aluminum, in terrestrial environments may be partially attributed to the presence of low-molecular-weight organic acids, which inhibit the formation of Al13 tridecamer species.

The pyroclastic sediments studied here contained varied amounts of zeolite and were formed in the saline alkaline Tuzgölü Basin following the alteration of dacitic volcanic materials during the Early to Late Miocene. The present study focused on the geological-geochemical properties of the zeolites and describes their formation. Mineralogical and chemical compositions were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results indicated that the zeolitic tuffs consisted mainly of heulandite/clinoptilolite (Hul/Cpt), chabazite, erionite, and analcime associated with smectite. Smectite, calcite, and dolomite are abundant in the clay and carbonate layers which alternate with the zeolitic tuffs. K-feldspar, gypsum, and hexahydrite (MgSO4·6H2O) were also found in some altered tuffs and clay-marl layers as accessory minerals. The zeolite and other authigenic minerals showed weak stratigraphic zonation. Some vitric tuff layers contained no zeolite minerals and others were found to consist of almost pure Hul/Cpt and chabazite layers with economic potential. The rare earth elements (REE), large ion lithophile elements (LILE), and high-field strength elements (HFSE) in the Hul/Cpt-rich tuffs and vitric tuffs were enriched or depleted relative to the precursor rock, while many major elements were slightly or significantly depleted in all zeolitic tuffs. The amounts of REE in the chabazite- and erionite-rich tuffs were generally smaller than those in the precursor rock. The middle and heavy REE (MREE and HREE, respectively) were abundant in the Hul/Cpt-rich tuffs, tuffs, and smectitic bentonites. Chondrite-normalized REE values of the sample groups are characterized by sub-parallel patterns with enrichment in LREE relative to HREE. The mineral assemblages and geological setting indicated that zeolite diagenesis occurred in a saline-alkaline basin. The δ18O and δD compositions of the Hul/Cpt, chabazite, and smectite indicated that the minerals formed at low to moderate temperatures and that some of the zeolitization occurred due to diagenetic alteration under closed-system conditions that varied according to the nature of the basin and with the composition and physical properties of the volcanic materials.

Formation of Fe-coatings or segregation at the expense of quartz grains is a common process in the tropical environment. Limited information is available about their internal structure at the submicroscopic level. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray microprobe analyses (EDXRMA) techniques were used to identify the nature and arrangement of fundamental mineral particles within the Fe-coatings. Chemical and mineralogical studies showed that the coatings were composed of well-crystallized Fe-oxides, quartz and kaolinite. The EDXRMA analyses revealed the presence of linear concentrations (laminae) of nearly pure Fe oxide along the edges and the contact zone with quartz and within the coatings. Similar atomic proportions of Al and Si in several areas within the interior regions of coatings and the XRD pattern of the crushed coatings are supportive evidence for the presence of kaolinite. Under the TEM, the dense laminae (< 10 μm thick) consisted of elongated Fe-oxide particles (< 1.5 μm long and 0.2 μm thick) accommodated in subparallel arrangement. The interior areas had very high porosity and, in addition to Fe-oxides, contained other minerals: mainly kaolinite, quartz and isolated areas of Al-oxides. High amounts of ultramicroscopic pores (<0.5 μm) in the interior region suggested that dissolution of Fe-oxides occurred under reduced conditions, with subsequent reprecipitation of pure Fe-oxides in the laminae. Very low porosity and parallel arrangement of Fe-oxide particles (laminae) provided new surfaces (barrier) for Fe-accumulation when soil solutions provided new influxes of iron, thereby creating a thicker Fe-coating. The size and geometry of the ultramicroporosity were shown to play a significant role in the dissolution and precipitation of soil minerals, especially those involved in redox reactions.

Results of adsorption studies of several pesticides on soils and clays show that the application of the reduced concentration concept to adsorption can either reduce the temperature effect on the isotherms, eliminate it altogether (e.g., parathion adsorption on Netanya soil), increase the temperature dependence (e.g., (β-BHC adsorption on Ca-bentonite) or even reverse the temperature dependence of the isotherms (e.g., parathion adsorption on Ca-attapulgite).

Literature and experimental data for the adsorption of parathion by Ca-attapulgite and by attapulgite with organic exchangeable cations of different sizes demonstrate that for many surface interactions the terms organophilic or hydrophilic are misleading. Organic compounds which are insoluble in water and soluble in apolar solvents will not necessarily adsorb preferentially on “organophilic“ surfaces. The specific interactions between adsorbate and adsorbent and steric considerations (in addition to the relative solubility of the organic molecule in water and apolar solvents and the organophilic or hydrophilic nature of the surface) will determine the partition between the adsorbed and the solution phase. An outstanding example is the order of adsorption of parathion on attapulgite: HDMA-attapulgite > Ca-attapulgite > TMA-attapulgite. This order is neither directly nor inversely related to the “organophilic” nature of the surfaces.

Interlayer potassium was removed from a wide range of mice minerals by treatment with dilute solutions of n-dodecylammonium chloride. On subsequent reaction with the appropriate metal methoxide, the Na+ or Ca2+ form of the altered mica was produced. The properties of the original and sodium saturated samples were compared to assess the changes in water content, charge density and chemical composition (particularly ferrous iron) which resulted from the displacement of potassium.

Calculation of structural formulae was not attempted since it was established that for the altered samples accurate distinction could not be made between adsorbed and structural water. Changes in layer charge are thus expressed on the basis of samples ignited to 1000°C. Charge losses of up to 76 me/100 g were recorded for biotites, smaller charges were noted for phlogopites and no loss was observed for the two muscovites examined.

Oxidation of ferrous iron occurred for all trioctahedral samples, the greatest oxidation occurring in the samples initially high in iron. There was no consistent relationship between the amount of iron oxidized and the loss of layer charge.

All altered samples contained greater amounts of H2O+ than the original materials suggesting that protonation of structural oxygens occurred during, or following, removal of potassium.

It is concluded that the alteration of micas by reaction with organic cations is a complex process, differing in detail for different micas, and following a similar path to alteration by reaction with inorganic salts.

Sudoite from diagenetic to very low-grade metaclastites of the Betic Cordillera was studied by X-ray diffraction and transmission/analytical electron microscopy. Sudoite formed directly from dickite, the assemblage dickite + sudoite + illite being replaced at increasing metamorphic grade by the assemblage pyrophyllite + sudoite + illite. Sudoite ranges in composition from Mg-rich to Fe-rich chemistries. In addition, a wide variety of mixed-layered structures (illite-sudoite, pyrophyllite-sudoite, and dickite-sudoite) was also identified. Mg-rich sudoite shows a mean chemical composition of (Al2.91Fe0.252+Mg1.80)(Si3.10Al0.90)O10(OH)8, and a IIb ordered structure with b = 9.055 Å. Intermediate Fe-Mg sudoite exhibits a very variable composition, the Fe-rich phases having a mean composition of (Al2.09Fe0.613+Fe0.872+Mg1.44)(Si3.31Al0.69O10(OH)8. These are disordered polytypes with b values ranging from 9.070 to 9.101 Å. Fe occurs in both octahedral sheets, according to two types of substitutions: Fe3+ for Al in the dioctahedral sheet and Fe2+ for Mg in the trioctahedral sheet. Sudoite with such a composition has not been described previously.

The surface conductivity of salt free montmorillonite clay gels saturated with lithium, sodium, potassium and cesium has been studied. The theory of the behavior of heterogeneous dielectrics adapted to systems having a surface charge density has been applied to the clay gels. From numerical calculations it became evident that the value of the depolarization factor may be extrapolated to 1 in the direction of the small axis of the platelet, meaning that the field action is zero in this direction. Along the long axis, however, the action is complete and the motion of the charge carriers is essentially tangential to the platelet. The values of the surface conductance are of an order of magnitude of 10−9 Mho.

The investigation of the behavior of the water molecules has been carried out over a wide temperature range (145–320°K). At temperatures below 273°K, the conduction appears to be predominantly protonic; the counterions are considered to be disturbing elements in the water layer structures, thus creating a number of lattice defects able to transport the current. Above 273°K, the conduction is essentially due to the adsorbed cations, their contribution starts during the phase change.

Diffusion of alkali and low-atomic-number elements during the microbeam analysis of some silicates by analytical electron microscopy (AEM) has been known for some time. Our repeated analyses at 300 kV of kaolinite, halloysite, smectite, biotite, muscovite and pyrophyllite, however, showed differential loss (relative to Si) of not only alkali elements (such as K, Na, Mg) and low-atomic-number elements (such as Al) but also higher-atomic-number elements (such as Fe, Ti). For AEM of these phyllosilicates, a Philips EM430/EDAX facility with a tungsten filament was used to provide a current of 0.3 nA in a stationary beam of nominal diameter 90 nm. The loss of Al in kaolin minerals during analysis is particularly severe. Kaolin crystals can be damaged by the electron irradiation over several seconds, making it the most sensitive clay to the electron beam; in general, relative phyllosilicate stabilities are kaolin < smectite < pyrophyllite < mica. A clear dependence of element loss on crystallographic orientation has been observed for layer silicates in our study; a greater element loss occurred when the plane of the specimen foil was perpendicular to the basal planes of the phyllosilicate crystals than when the foil was parallel to the basal planes. Lower beam current, larger beam diameter and thicker specimens all reduce the loss of elements. The initial stage of irradiation produces highest rates of element loss and the rate of loss can be fitted by an exponential decay law. The analyses at low temperature of phyllosilicates showed that element loss remains serious in our analytical conditions. Since the element loss appears to be instrument- and method-dependent, one should use closely related, well-characterized phyllosilicates as compositional standards to calibrate any AEM instrument that is to be used to analyze unknown phyllosilicates, and the standards and unknowns should be analyzed under identical conditions.

A glass in the intermediate composition of montmorillonite and beidellite, 50/50 in mole ratio, was treated under a hydrothermal pressure of 100 MPa, in the temperature range from 250 to 500°C and durations from 2 to 129 days. The phases identified in the products were plotted in a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram. The TTT diagram showed that the regularly interstratified montmorillonite-beidellite (r.i.M-B) was a metastable phase above the temperature of 350°C and changed to the assemblage of Na-rectorite + saponite + quartz, through the intermediate assemblage of beidellite + saponite + quartz. The TTT diagram suggested also that the r.i.M-B might be a stable clay mineral below the temperature of 300°C in the middle region of montmorillonite-beidellite pseudo-binary system, although the laboratory confirmation of the mineral stability was not easy for the sluggish reaction.

Microprobe analysis of a synthetic large crystal type X zeolite shows that the silica to alumina molar ratio increases from the crystal center to the exterior.

Highly weathered soils of the humid tropics generally provide a poor mineral reserve of potassium (K), but evidence has been found which indicates that even in such soils non-exchangeable forms of K can be made plant available and this warrants further investigation. The objective of this study was, therefore, to determine the extent to which K can be released from poorly available reserves over a long period of time. The focus was on an Oxisol in southern Brazil cultivated for 32 years with a rotation of soybeans (Glycine max L.), maize (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and oats (Avena strigosa L.) with and without K fertilization. Mineral sources of K were identified by X-ray diffraction and by sequential chemical extraction from the clay fraction. The amounts of K-bearing mineral species and the amounts of total and plant-available K were quantified, then the effects of the long-term K-fertilization regime on these values were evaluated. The clay fraction was dominated by hematite, gibbsite, and phyllosilicates such as kaolinite. These minerals were unaffected by the K deprivation in the cropping systems, but in the clay fraction the absence of K fertilization for 32 years reduced the structural order of the 2:1 phyllosilicates associated with K reserves. This effect was most prominent in the root zone of the soil. Deprivation of K for more than three decades decreased the crystallinity of 2:1 phyllosilicates, which could be better evaluated from XRD patterns after the removal of kaolinite and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. The K-free cultivation reduced the amounts of total soil K by increasing the depletion of K from pools that typically are poorly accessible to plants.

Limonite is mainly derived from weathering of Fe sulfide, iron-bearing carbonate, or silicate minerals. The weathering of Fe sulfide or carbonate minerals to yield limonite from the Tongling mineralization cluster has been studied extensively. Knowledge of the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the limonite from weathering of Fe-bearing silicate minerals is still incomplete, however. To address this, black limonite containing ilvaite (a silicate mineral) found in Yeshan iron deposit, Tongling, China, was studied using mineralogical and chemical analysis. The mineralogical characteristics indicated that Mn goethite was present as nano-granular (<15 nm) or acicular (50–100 nm long, ~10 nm wide, i.e. high length/width ratio) crystals with low crystallinity. Groutite, ramsdellite, and pyrolusite were identified in the limonite as ~5 nm nanoparticles, and coated on the goethite surface. Amorphous Fe-Mn phases and silica were highly developed in the limonite studied. Ilvaite crystals showed idiomorphic granular morphology and were replaced by Fe-Mn oxides/hydroxides; pyrite was also present as inclusions within the ilvaite and the ilvaite structural formula calculated was Ca1.04(Fe1.57Mn0.31Mg0.04)(Fe1.09Al0.01)[Si1.95O]O(OH). According to the relatively high CuO and ZnO values and the low Al2O3 value in the black limonite, the negative correlations between (Fe2O3+MnO) and (CuO+ZnO+BaO), (Fe2O3+MnO) and Al2O3, high Mn and Si contents, and the characteristics of the textural relationships and compositions between the black limonite and ilvaite, a semi-enclosed environment with acidic to weakly alkaline conditions was deduced; ilvaite was found to be responsible for the formation and enrichment of limonite.

A model based on Gouy-Chapman theory, describing the ion exchange behavior of clays in mixed electrolyte solutions is presented. Computed ionic distributions, taking into account variations in relative permittivity, ion activity, and closeness of approach of ions to clay surfaces, are compared with experimental data for smectite and kaolinite in contact with river and saline waters. To obtain reasonable agreement between theoretical prediction and observation the most important extension of Gouy-Chapman theory involves the introduction of a closeness of approach term. Furthermore, the aggregated nature of smectites plays an important part in controlling its exchange properties, whereas a fixed-charge model provides a poor description for the ion exchange properties of kaolinite.

In recent years KAlSiO4 polymorphs have become minerals of interest from an industrial point of view; they have various applications in technological and medical fields. The costs of synthesis processes are often significant and so, in the present study, an attempt was made to develop a new synthesis protocol using a widely available and inexpensive, natural starting material. The KAlSiO4 polymorphs synthesized here were kalsilite and KAlSiO4-01 — 01 refers to the high-temperature polymorph of KAlSiO4 (Cook et al., 1997; Gregorkiewitz et al., 2008; Kremenovic et al., 2013). KAlSiO4 polymorphs were synthesized using kaolin; the effects of time and temperature on the synthesis process were investigated. A solid-state synthesis protocol was developed which required the mixing of the calcined kaolin with K2CO3 in stoichiometric proportions at temperatures of 700 and 800°C at atmospheric pressure. Crystallization of kalsilite at 700°C was demonstrated while that of KAlSiO4-01 was revealed at 800°C. Synthetic kaliophilite H2 was found in both of the experiments as a metastable phase. The products of synthesis were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and 29Si magic-angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (29Si MAS NMR). Calculation of cell parameters (through Rietveld refinement) and the density and specific surface area of the phases synthesized was also achieved. The amount of amorphous phase in the synthesis powders was estimated by means of quantitative phase analysis using the combined Rietveld and reference intensity ratio methods. In particular, the results of the spectroscopic, chemical, and morphological characterizations are in agreement with the data available for these minerals in the literature, thus confirming the effectiveness of the experimental protocol. The quantitative phase analysis (QPA) also indicated the high purity of the powders synthesized, thus allowing for industrial applications.

The industrial assessment of ceramic clays commonly consists of the determination of just two parameters, the particle-size distribution and the chemical composition; other parameters may also be important, however. The aim of the present study was to show that a careful determination of the mineralogical phase content provides valuable additional information on the processing behavior of ceramic clays.

Two ceramic clays (W1 andW2) from theWesterwald area, Germany, were evaluated as being the same with respect to industrial screening criteria, but showed different processing properties. In order to elucidate the different behaviors, both clays were investigated comprehensively using a multi-method approach combining physical-chemical and mineralogical methods.

Different aggregation characteristics for the two clays were revealed by determining the grain-size distribution with and without Na-pyrophosphate as a dispersant. In addition, W1 showed a greater electrical conductivity and soluble-salt concentration which promoted dispersion behavior.

The phase content was identified both for bulk materials and for several grain-size fractions by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis. The quantitative phase content was crosschecked with the chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Additional information was gathered by thermal analysis, cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and optical microscopy. While bulk samples of W1 and W2 showed nearly the same mineralogical and chemical compositions, investigation of the clay-size fractions (0.6–2 μm, <0.6 mm) revealed differences in the composition of the 2:1 layer silicates. The percentages of smectite in the mixed-layer I-S, as well as the amount of kaolinite, discrete illite, and smectite were determined by one-dimensional XRD profile fitting (ODPF). Best-fitting results for W1 were achieved for a physical mixture of an illite-rich I-S mixed-layer mineral (R3 I(0.9)-S) with discrete smectite, whereas W2 was characterized by a greater proportion of smectite in the mixed-layer (R1 I(0.8)-S), without discrete smectite. Based on the different structural features of the swellable clays, a qualitative delamination model for the 2:1 layer silicates during processing of the clays was derived. The model provides a further approach, aside from aggregation characteristics, to help understand the clay-processing behavior, which was found to be different for the two ceramic clays investigated.
