Campbell and Selick have given a natural decomposition of the cohomology of an elementary abelian p-group over the Steenrod algebra. We study the corresponding stable wedge summands of the classifying space B(𝓩/p)n+ using representation theory and explicit idempotents in the group ring 𝓕p[GLn(𝓩/p)].

It has been claimed that a sheaf of abelian groups on a Hausdorff space in which the compact open sets form a basis is injective in the category of all such sheaves whenever its group of global elements is divisible (Dobbs [1]). The purpose of this note is to present an optimal counterexample to this by showing, more generally, that on any nondiscrete T0-space there exists a sheaf of the type in question which is not injective.

Recall that a sheaf A of abelian groups on a space X assigns to each open set U in X an abelian group AU and to each pair U, V of open sets in X such that V ⊆ U a group homomorphism, denoted s ⟿ s|V, satisfying the familiar sheaf conditions ([3, p. 246]) which make A a special type of contravariant functor from the category given by the inclusion relation between the open sets of X into the category Ab of abelian groups, and that a map between sheaves A and B of abelian groups is a natural transformation h:A → B, with component homomorphisms hu:AU → BU. In the following, AbShX will be the category with these A as objects and these h:A → B as maps (= morphisms).

There has been considerable interest recently in the investigation of "Korovkin sets". Briefly, for X a Banach space and a family of linear operators on X, a subset K ⊂ X is a Korovkin set relative to if for any bounded sequence {Tn} ⊂ , Tnk → k in X for each k ∊ K implies Tnx → x for each x ∊ X. A large portion of these investigations have been carried out for X being one of the spaces C(S), S compact Hausdorff, the usual Lp spaces of functions on some finite measure space, or some Banach lattice; while is one of the classes +-positive operators, 1-contractions (i.e., ||T|| 1), or + ⋂1

A t-cap in a geometry is a set of t points no three of which are collinear. A (t, k)-cap is a set of t points, no k + 1 of which are collinear.

It has been shown in [3] that any Desarguesian PG(2n, q2) is a disjoint union of (q2n+l – l)/(q – 1) (q2n+l – l)/(q + l)-caps. These caps were obtained as intersections of 2n Hermitian Varieties of a certain kind; the intersection of 2n + 1 such varieties was empty. Furthermore, the caps in question constituted the ‘large points” of a PG(2n, q), with the incidence relation defined in a natural way.

It seemed at the time that nothing similar could be said about odd-dimensional projective geometries, if only because |PG(2n – 1, q)| ∤ |PG(2n – l, q2)|.

We construct bivariate polynomial approximations of the Lerch function that for certain specialisations of the variables and parameters turn out to be Hermite–Padé approximants either of the polylogarithms or of Hurwitz zeta functions. In the former case, we recover known results, while in the latter the results are new and generalise some recent works of Beukers and Prévost. Finally, we make a detailed comparison of our work with Beukers’. Such constructions are useful in the arithmetical study of the values of the Riemann zeta function at integer points and of the Kubota–Leopold $p$ -adic zeta function.

A problem which has generated considerable interest during the past couple of decades is that of characterizing abstractly systems of realvalued continuous functions with various algebraic or topological-algebraic structures. With few exceptions known characterizations are of systems of bounded continuous functions on compact or locally compact spaces. Only recently have characterizations been given of the systems C(X) of all realvalued continuous functions on an arbitrary completely regular space X (1). One of the main objects of this paper is to provide, by using certain special techniques, a characterization of C(X) for a particular class of (not necessarily compact) completely regular spaces.

This paper extends the results of A. L. Foster (1) on elementary factorization in Boolean-like rings to commutative π-regular rings. After proving some preliminary lemmas we proceed to the partition of the set of non-units of a π-regular ring into irreducible and composite elements. Finally, we prove a number of theorems concerning factorization rings, weakly unique factorization rings, principal ideal rings, etc. The principal result is that a π-regular ring is a weakly unique factorization ring if and only if it is a principal ideal ring.

Let R be an open Riemann surface. ƒ belongs to H1(R) if ƒ is holomorphic on R and if the subharmonic function |ƒ| has a harmonie majorant on R. Let p be in R and define ||ƒ|| to be the value at p of the least harmonic majorant of |ƒ|. ||ƒ|| is a norm on the linear space H1(R), and with this norm H1(R) is a Banach space (7). The unit ball of H1(R) is the closed convex set of all ƒ in H1(R) with ||ƒ|| ⩽ 1. Problem: What are the extreme points of the unit ball of H1(R)? de Leeuw and Rudin have given a complete solution to this problem where R is the open unit disk (1).

Let μ be a vector measure (countably additive set function with values in a Banach space) on a field. If μ is of bounded variation, it extends to a vector measure on the generated σ-field (2; 5; 8). Arsene and Strătilă (1) have obtained a result, which when specialized somewhat in form and context, reads as follows: “A vector measure on a field, majorized in norm by a positive, finite, subadditive increasing set function defined on the generated σ-field, extends to a vector measure on the generated σ-field”.

The problem of spectral analysis of non-self-adjoint (and non-normal) operators has received considerable attention recently. Livšic (5), and more recently Brodskii and Livšic (1) have considered operators on Hilbert space with completely continuous imaginary parts. Dunford (3) has generalized the notion of spectral measure and defined a class of spectral operators on Hilbert and Banach space. Schwartz (8) and Rota (7) have investigated conditions under which a differential operator will be spectral. The work of Naimark (6) and the author (4) on non-self-adjoint differential operators leads to an expansion theorem which implicitly defines a type of spectral measure. However the projections involved in this will not in general be bounded, much less uniformly bounded.

This paper discusses projective planes from the viewpoint of their classification into singly-generated and non-singly-generated planes. (Singly-generatedness, a property explicit in Hall (6) and Wagner (19), and implicit in Hughes (10), is defined in Section 5.) The elements (points and lines) of a singly-generated plane are expressible in four basic points called a quadrangle. A t'completion procedure" enables us to obtain expressions for the elements of a plane.

In this paper we attempt to define the notion of normed Lie algebra by endowing the corresponding algebraic concept with topologicalmetric properties. More precisely, we define normed Lie algebras as being normed spaces possessing a Lie product, the latter satisfying a compatibility relation. It turns out that any normed algebra, in particular the algebra of continuous linear operators on a normed space, is a normed Lie algebra in the sense denned below, with the usual Lie product given by the additive commutator.

It seems that some algebraic features have within the framework of normed Lie algebras the natural topological extensions. We mention, for instance, the convergence of the well-known Campbell-Hausdorff formula. Let us also mention the occurence of a variant of the Kleinecke-Sirokov theorem, obtained via universal enveloping algebra, which might be unknown in this context.

In [7] Varadarajan denned the notion of a cyclic map f : A → X. The collection of all homotopy classes of such cyclic maps forms the Gottlieb subset G(A, X) of [A, X]. If A = S1 this reduces to the group G(X, X0) of Gottlieb [5]. We show that a cyclic map f maps ΩA into the centre of ΩX in the sense of Ganea [4]. If A and X are both suspensions, we then show that if f : A → X maps ΩA into the centre of ΩX, then f is cyclic. Thus for maps from suspensions to suspensions, Varadarajan's cyclic maps are just those maps considered by Ganea. We also define G (Σ4, ΣX) in terms of the generalized Whitehead product [1], This gives the computations for G(Sn+k, Sn) in terms of Whitehead products in π2n+k(Sn).

We work in the category of spaces with base points and having the homotopy type of countable CW-complexes. All maps and homotopies are with respect to base points. For simplicity, we shall frequently use the same symbol for a map and its homotopy class.

Let Φ be a regular closed C2 curve on a sphere S in Euclidean three-space. Let H(S)[H(Φ) ] denote the convex hull of S[Φ]. For any point p ∈ H(S), let O(p) be the set of points of Φ whose osculating plane at each of these points passes through p.

1. THEOREM ([8]). If Φ has no multiple points and p ∈ H(Φ), then |0(p) | ≧ 3[4] when p is [is not] a vertex of Φ.

2. THEOREM ( [9]). a) If the only self intersection point of Φ is a doublepoint and p ∈ H(Φ) is not a vertex of Φ, then |O(p)| ≧ 2.

b) Let Φ possess exactly n vertices. Then

• (1) |O(p)| ≦ nforp ∈ H(S) and

• (2) if the osculating plane at each vertex of Φ meets Φ at exactly one point, |O(p)| = n if and only if p ∈ H(Φ) is not vertex.

Main result: If a ${{C}^{*}}$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is simple, $\sigma $-unital, has finitely many extremal traces, and has strict comparison of positive elements by traces, then its multiplier algebra $\mathcal{M}\left( \mathcal{A} \right)$ also has strict comparison of positive elements by traces. The same results holds if finitely many extremal traces is replaced by quasicontinuous scale. A key ingredient in the proof is that every positive element in the multiplier algebra of an arbitrary $\sigma $-unital ${{C}^{*}}$ -algebra can be approximated by a bi-diagonal series. As an application of strict comparison, if $\mathcal{A}$ is a simple separable stable ${{C}^{*}}$ -algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one, and strict comparison of positive elements by traces, then whether a positive element is a positive linear combination of projections is determined by the trace values of its range projection.

We consider Schubert problems with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. These problems are of special interest when the osculation points are all real. In this case, for zero-dimensional Schubert problems, the solutions are “ as real as possible”. Recent work by Speyer has extended the theory to the moduli space $\overline{{{\mathcal{M}}_{0,\,r}}}$ allowing the points to collide. This gives rise to smooth covers $\overline{{{\mathcal{M}}_{0,\,r}}}\left( \mathbb{R} \right)$, with structure and monodromy described by Young tableaux and jeu de taquin.

In this paper, we give analogous results on one-dimensional Schubert problems over $\overline{{{\mathcal{M}}_{0,\,r}}}$.Their(real) geometry turns out to be described by orbits of Schützenberger promotion and a related operation involving tableau evacuation. Over ${{\mathcal{M}}_{0,\,r}}$, our results show that the real points of the solution curves are smooth.

We also find a new identity involving “first-order” $\text{K}$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, for which there does not appear to be a known combinatorial proof.

In the theory of curves, one often makes differentiability assumptions in order that analytic methods can be used. Then one tries to weaken these assumptions as much as possible. The theory of curves which is presented here uses geometric methods, such as central projection, rather than analysis. In this way, no analytic assumptions are needed and a purely geometric theory results. Since this theory is not so well known as the analytic one, I have tried to make the treatment as self-contained as possible. It is hoped that this paper will form a quick introduction for a reader who has had no previous acquaintance with the subject.

We assume that our curves satisfy a condition, which we call direct differentiability. Roughly this condition is that, at each point of the curve, all the osculating spaces exist.

We prove a nonvanishing result for families of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}\times \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}$ Rankin–Selberg $L$-functions in the critical strip, as one factor runs over twists by Hecke characters. As an application, we simplify the proof, due to Luo, Rudnick, and Sarnak, of the best known bounds towards the Generalized Ramanujan Conjecture at the infinite places for cusp forms on $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}$. A key ingredient is the regularization of the units in residue classes by the use of an Arakelov ray class group.

To each field F of characteristic not 2, one can associate a certain Galois group 𝒢F, the so-called W-group of F, which carries essentially the same information as the Witt ring W(F) of F. In this paper we show that direct products of Witt rings correspond to free products of these Galois groups (in the appropriate category), group ring construction of Witt rings corresponds to semidirect products of W-groups, and the basic part of W(F) is related to the center of 𝒢F. In an appendix we provide a complete list of Witt rings and corresponding w-groups for fields F with |Ḟ/Ḟ2| ≤ 16.

Ce résultat échappe évidemment aux théorèmes classiques d'existence de Hamilton-Jacobi et de Cauchy-Kowalevsky.
