It is shown by a combination of analytic and computational techniques that for any positive fundamental discriminant $D\,>\,3705$, there is always at least one prime $p\,<\,\sqrt{D}/2$ such that the Kronecker symbol $(D/P)\,=\,-1$.

Suppose throughout that α >0, β is real, and Nis a non-negative integer such that αN+ β> 0. A series of complex terms is said to be summable (B, α,β) to l if, as x→ ∞,

where sn= a0 + a1 + … + an.The Borel-type summability method (B, α, β) is regular, i.e., all convergent series are summable (B, α,β) to their natural sums; and (B,1, 1) is the standard Borel exponential method B.

Our aim in this paper is to prove the following Tauberian theorem.

Introduction. In hyperbolic geometry we have three compasses, namely an ordinary compass for drawing ordinary circles with a given centre and a given radius, a hypercompass for drawing hypercycles with a given axis and a given radius, and a horocompass for drawing horocycles with a given diameter and passing through a given point.

Two basic unsolved problems of lattice theory are (1) the characterization of sublattices of free lattices and (2) the characterization of projective lattices. A solution to an important case of the first problem has been provided by Galvin and Jónsson [3], who characterize distributive sublattices of free lattices. In this paper, we solve the same case of the second problem by characterizing distributive projective lattices (Theorem 4.1). An interesting corollary is the verification for distributive lattices of the conjecture that a, finite lattice is projective if and only if it is a sublattice of a free lattice.

We shall consider only finite p-groups, so that the class of groups with r = d coincides with that consisting of those groups whose Schur multiplicator is trivial.

The purpose of this paper is to continue the investigation into Massey products defined on two dimensional polyhedra, initiated in [13]. It will be shown that for many such spaces there is a hyperbolic model which can be used to study Massey products. More precisely, Massey products may be interpreted as intersections of geodesies in the Poincaré model. These elements are called minimal Massey products and are the analogue of Massey products over a system considered in Porter's paper. They enjoy the property of being uniquely defined (without indeterminacy) and of being multilinear and natural. Minimal products also satisfy symmetry properties generalising the symmetry properties enjoyed by cup products.

A device which will be useful in the proof of the main theorem, 7.4, is the introduction of a class of complexes called basic complexes. These generalise the notion of a surface and each one houses a standard copy of a Massey product.

Combinatorial structures that compose and decompose give rise to Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. The Hadamard product of two Hopf monoids is another Hopf monoid. We prove two main results regarding freeness of Hadamard products. The first one states that if one factor is connected and the other is free as a monoid, their Hadamard product is free (and connected). The second provides an explicit basis for the Hadamard product when both factors are free.

The first main result is obtained by showing the existence of a one-parameter deformation of the comonoid structure and appealing to a rigidity result of Loday and Ronco that applies when the parameter is set to zero. To obtain the second result, we introduce an operation on species that is intertwined by the free monoid functor with the Hadamard product. As an application of the first result, we deduce that the Boolean transform of the dimension sequence of a connected Hopf monoid is nonnegative.

We study separable metric spaces with few types of countable dense sets. We present a structure theorem for locally compact spaces having precisely $n$ types of countable dense sets: such a space contains a subset $S$ of size at most $n-1$ such that $S$ is invariant under all homeomorphisms of $X$ and $X\,\backslash \,S$ is countable dense homogeneous. We prove that every Borel space having fewer than $\mathfrak{c}$ types of countable dense sets is Polish. The natural question of whether every Polish space has either countably many or $\mathfrak{c}$ many types of countable dense sets is shown to be closely related to Topological Vaught's Conjecture.

It is known (Perron (10); Frobenius (5, 6)) that if A = (aik) is a finite matrix with elements aik ⩾ 0, then A has a real, nonnegative eigenvalue μ, satisfying μ =max|λ| where λ is in the spectrum of A, with a corresponding eigenvector x = (x1, … , xn) for which xi≥ 0. Moreover if aik > 0, then μ is a simple point of the spectrum with an eigenvector x (unique, except for constant multiples) with components xi ≥0. Much has been written on this and related issues; cf., for example, the recent papers (4, 12) wherein are given several references.

We assume familiarity with the notation and contents of Conway [2] and Edge [3]. That the Mathieu group is a subgroup of the simple group PSU (6, 22) appears to have been first recognized by Conway and is consequent upon his identification of ·222 with PSU (6, 22). Although we know of no proof of this identification in the literature, several proofs exist in the folklore of the subject: for example, N. Patterson showed one of the authors a proof that depends on ·222 being a Fischer group, hence on consideration of order, isomorphic to PSU (6, 22). There is another proof which relies on McLaughlin's work on rank three groups.

We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra$A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.

In the duality for locally compact groups, much use is made of a version of the Hopf algebra technique in the context of von Neumann algebras, culminating in the theory of Kac algebras [6], [14]. It seems natural to ask whether something like a Hopf algebraic structure can be defined on the pre-dual of a Kac algebra. This leads to the question of whether the multiplication on a von Neumann algebra M, viewed as a linear map m from M ⊙ M (the algebraic tensor product) to M, can be pre-transposed to give a co-multiplication on the pre-dual M*, i.e., a linear map m* from M* to the completion of M* ⊙ M* with respect to some cross-norm. A related question is whether the multiplication on a C*-algebra A can be transposed to give a co-multiplication on the dual A*. Of course, this can be regarded as a special case of the preceding question by taking M = A**, where the double dual A** is identified with the enveloping von Neumann algebra of A.

Let p be a prime number, and let F be a free pro-p group of rank two. Consider an automorphism α of F of finite order m, and let FixF(α) = {x ∈ F | α(x) = x} be the subgroup of F consisting of the elements fixed by α. It is known that if m is prime to p and α = idF, then the rank of FixF(α) is infinite. In this paper we show that if m is a finite power pr of p, the rank of FixF(α) is at most 2. We conjecture that if the rank of F is n and the order of a is a power of α, then rank (FixF(α)) ≤ n.

In the paper we formulate a Covering Property Axiom, $\text{CP}{{\text{A}}_{\text{prism}}}$, which holds in the iterated perfect set model, and show that it implies the following facts, of which (a) and (b) are the generalizations of results of J. Steprāns.

(a) There exists a family $\mathcal{F}$ of less than continuum many ${{C}^{1}}$ functions from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{R}$ such that ${{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ is covered by functions from $\mathcal{F}$, in the sense that for every $\left\langle x,\,y \right\rangle \,\in \,{{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$${{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ there exists an $f\,\in \,\mathcal{F}$ such that either $f\left( x \right)\,=\,y$ or $f\left( y \right)\,=\,x$.

(b) For every Borel function $f:\,\mathbb{R}\,\to \,\mathbb{R}$ there exists a family $\mathcal{F}$ of less than continuum many “${{C}^{1}}$” functions (i.e., differentiable functions with continuous derivatives, where derivative can be infinite) whose graphs cover the graph of $f$.

(c) For every $n\,>\,0$ and a ${{D}^{n}}$ function $f:\,\mathbb{R}\,\to \,\mathbb{R}$ there exists a family $\mathcal{F}$ of less than continuum many ${{C}^{n}}$ functions whose graphs cover the graph of $f$.

We also provide the examples showing that in the above properties the smoothness conditions are the best possible. Parts (b), (c), and the examples are closely related to work of A. Olevskiî.

We give mild sufficient conditions on a nonlinear functional to have eigenvalues. These results are intended for the study of boundary value problems for semilinear elliptic equations.

The aim of this paper is to study a decomposition of finite T0 spaces into topological entities called chains and cells. These objects behave like complete units under homeomorphisms and they appear to be useful in investigating certain aspects of finite spaces. As an elementary illustration of how these entities can be used, the concept of an A2 space is introduced (in the next paragraph) and it is demonstrated that the order of the automorphism group of an A2 space is expressible as 2t, for some t ≧ 0.

W. Gaschutz [5] introduced a conjugacy class of subgroups of a finite soluble group called the prefrattini subgroups. These subgroups have the property that they avoid the complemented chief factors of G and cover the rest. Subsequently, these results were generalized by Hawkes [12], Makan [14; 15] and Chambers [2]. Hawkes [12] and Makan [14] obtained conjugacy classes of subgroups which avoid certain complemented chief factors associated with a saturated formation or a Fischer class. Makan [15] and Chambers [2] showed that if W, D and V are the prefrattini subgroup, 𝔍-normalizer and a strongly pronormal subgroup associated with a Sylow basis S, then any two of W, D and V permute and the products and intersections of these subgroups have an explicit cover-avoidance property.

In [16] Freese showed that the word problem for the free modular lattice on 5 generators is unsolvable. His proof makes essential use of Mclntyre's construction of a finitely presented field with unsolvable word problem [30]. (We follow Cohn [7] in calling what is commonly called a division ring a field, and what is commonly called a field a commutative field.) In this paper we will use similar ideas to obtain unsolvability results for varieties of modular ortholattices. The material in this paper is fairly wide ranging, the following are recommended as reference texts.

Pandey and Chaudhary [13] recently developed the theory of Hilbert transform of Schwartz distribution space (DLp)',p > 1 in one dimension using Parseval's types of relations for one dimensional Hilbert transform [17] and noted that their theory coincides with the corresponding theory for the Hilbert transform developed by Schwartz [16] by using the technique of convolution in one dimension.

The corresponding theory for the Hilbert transform in n-dimension is considerably harder and will be successfully accomplished in this paper.
