Aleurodicus Dugesii, n. sp.—Length, 1⅔ mm.; length of anterior wing, 2¼ mm.; its greatest breadth nearly 1½ mm. Pale grayish-ochreous, covered with while meal, abdomen beneath shining silvery. Wings white; upper wings iridescent, with markings similar to those of A. ornatus, but very pale gray and quite different in detail. There are four gray bands crossing the wings, of which only the third and fourth are joined by a longitudinal band. The first (basal) band bends abruptly inwards after crossing the main nervure, which branches so near the base of the wing that there are practically two nervures, the first gray band failing in the angle between them, but strong again beyond the second. Second gray band broad as far as the first nervure, just beyond it interrupted broadly, but continued as a large, nearly circular, gray patch, the greater part of which is above the second nervure, and passing thence as an oblique narrow band to the margin.

Podalirius phenax, n. sp.—♂. Length about 9 mm.; appearance of P. maculifrons (cress.), with the same white pubescence (mixed with black on hind part of mesothorax and front part of scutellum), the same clear wings (but the second submarginal cell is less narrowed above), and the same legs, except that the tarsi are wholly dark. The black antennæ are considerably longer, when the head is thrown back they reach to postscutellum; scape with a broad white stripe; first joint of flagellum a little shorter than third. Eyes a beautiful dark lavender or gray-blue, instead of green. Clypeus (except the narrow black anterior edge) a transverse supraclypeal band, lateral face-marks (triangular, with the upper side deeply excavated), labrum (except the usual pair of spots), and large patch on mandibles, pure white, shining, like porcelain. Abdominal bands more or less interrupted in the middle; first segment without a band; apex with two spines.

The subfamily Acicnemidinae is for the first time recorded in America, descriptive details and illustrations are given for its introduced representative, the European Trachodes hispidus (Linnaeus), notes on the distribution and synonymy of Acicnemidinae and Trachodes are presented, and the subfamily keys of Blatchley and Leng and of Kissinger are emended to include the Acicnemidinae.

Aptesis basizona (Grav.), a parasite of pine sawflies in Europe, was propagated at Belleville, Ont. (Green, 1938) for release against the European spruce sawfly, Diprion hercyniae (Htg.), the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoff.) and other Diprionidae. Development of the insects in the laboratory was allowed to continue until feeding was completed and cocoons were spun, and was then retarded by placing the insects in cold storage pending shipment to release areas. Frequently stock for propagation was incubated after a period of cold storage, and occasionally the schedule was interrupted by decreases in the reproductive capacity of the adults. It seemed that there was some relationship between the fertility of the adults and the temperatures at which the immature stages were held, both while feeding and after they had reached the fully-fed stage. Experiments were initiated to investigate this hypothesis.

Form and size abour as in D. Citri; pink, distinctly segmented, with a slight covering of mealy powder; caudal tassels short but well-developed; lateral fringe of tassels very short, irregular, but plainly visible in fresh specimens. Females full of young show no signs of producing ovisacs.

During the last seven years, larvae representing more than a dozen species of the genus Eupithecia have been received by the Forest Insect Survey of Canada. With the hope that some of these larvae may be recognized more readily, two species are described herewith; additional notes are given on three species already described, and a key for the separation of mature larvae of these five species is presented at the end of this article.

On the Report of the Entomologial Club, as given in the Canadian Entomologist for November pp. 246–247, I would make the following remarks:-

Mr. Smith's statement that there are two distinct series in the Sphingidœ, as also that the Smerinthinœ have their probable orgin in Ceratocampid forms of the Bombycidœ are both original with myself. The series Hemaris, Choerocampa and Smerithus belong together. So far as I know, I am the first to show, from imaginal and larval characters, that Choerocampa and Smerinthus are allied, and I am the first to describe an ocellated Choerocampid from Brazil.

Catocala Clintonii.

Egg, deposited June 21st, 1900, is a disc concave below and convex above. The ornamentation consists of a series of ridges converging from the slightly upcurved edge to a central depression which has in its centre a slight tubercle. Colour dark, or blackish. Harched April 17, 1901.

Larvæ escaped by cutting a hole at one side of the centre above.

Newly-hatched larvæ slender, nearly ¼ inch in length, dark pruinose. Head paler, no marks apparent.

After first moult they are somewhat lighter in colour. The two rows of dorsal tubercles appear as black dots. The head is light, the lobes surmounted with black.

In a foot note to his paper on “The Butterflies of Laggan” (Can Ent., XXII., 129), Mr. Bean says: “I hope none of my younger readers entertain the absurd mediæval superstition that hibernating caterpillars pass the winter in a frozen condition. In succesful hibernation they do not get near to such a condition; but if they do absolutely freeze, then are they undone caterpillars.

♂ ♀. This species in ornamentation approaches partialis Led., Taf.9, fig. 8. Both wings clear pale lemon yellow. Primaries crossed by four equidistant lines, of which the first three from the base form brown spots narrowly outlined in black on the costal region. The third spot coalesces with an inferior spot on the line. The second line widens into a small spot on internal margin. The fourth line has a small dark spot on costa and one on internal margin.

Loewia foeda (Mg.), a European parasite of the centipede Lithobius, is recorded from two localities in New York State where it has evidently become established as an addition to the Nearctic fauna. The adult is redescribed and figured and its life history briefly reviewed.

The genus Symballophthalmus Becker, 1889 (= Marcroptera Becker, 1889, preocc.), was erected for Tachydromia dissimilis Fallén (= M. pictipes Becker). This species, known from central and northern Europe, has been the only one definitely referred to the genus.

In 1954 and 1955, two male and two female specimens referable to this genus were collected in the vicinity of a spruce bog near Ottawa, Ontario, and five females were collected in Michigan during several years. These agree very well with the description of the type species except in the bristling of the front legs of the male and in details of the hypopygium.

The influence of constant temperatures on the non-diapause development of Hyssopus thymus was studied and the results of these studies are presented. A lower threshold for development of less than 12 °C and an upper threshold of about 32 °C were determined. Mean times for and rates of development at different temperatures are presented for all developmental stages. The egg is the stage most sensitive to temperature change. Regression equations describing the relationship between the rate of development and temperature for these stages are given and a thermal constant (K) of about 190 degree-days is calculated for total development. This constant is not applicable to naturally fluctuating temperatures. The results of these studies are discussed in relation to the potential impact of H. thymus on European pine shoot moth dynamics under different climatic conditions. It is concluded that H. thymus should be more effective in warmer seasons and at lower latitudes.

Massive quantities of webbing and overwintering eggs produced by Schizotetranychus schizopus (Zacher), covering the trunks of two willow trees growing near Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia, are reported. This was the most extensive concentration of overwintering eggs and webbing, produced by spider mites under natural conditions, known to the authors.

Through the kindness of Dr. R. Stace-Smith of the Canada Department of Agriculture, Plant Pathology Laboratory, Vancouver, B.C., I have been able to collect and examine specimens of a species of Amphorophora occurring on Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus) in British Columbia. This species, as well as showing morphological differences which separate it from all described species, differs also from them ecologically and in its ability to transmit certain Rubus viruses. (Stace-Smith, in press). Professors M. A. Palmer and George F. Knowlton have both seen some of this material and have given it as their opinion that it cannot be placed among the known species of Amphorophora. It is therefore described here as a new species.

Oneida luniferella, n. sp.—Tongue blackish with some light gray scales; labial palpi and face light gray; antennæ blackish gray; antennal protection light gray at base, becoming blackish gray towards summit; thorax gray, patagia lighter, becoming nearly white posteriorly; abdomen gray with black scales intermixed, somewhat washed with fuscous, and often stained with yellowish. Fore wings light gray at base to raised scale ridge immediately before the first cross-line; this line is white, rounded from costa to median vein, and thence to inner margin, edged on both sides with black and preceded by a scale ridge which is reddish brown in colour; middle field light gray, glistering, slightly powdered with blackish scales, this colour reaching to outer margin posterior to vein 5; near middle of field and between vein 1 and median vein a raised scale tuft, blackish.
