There is in the study of Entomology a fascination and delight that captivates the imagination, and renders the enthusiast liable to construct theories based upon such slender foundations that they fail to reach the dignity of assured facts. This, I think, may be said of much that has been written concerning the habits of this beetle. The record which I have thought proper to make relates to veritable facts, but whether in the particular instance referred to they are to be regarded as extraordinary and not of common occurrence, may be a problem yet to be solved. I trust that in offering this paper I may not be thought presumptuous in differing with so distinguished Entomologists as Drs. Harris and Fitch, yet as my observations do not bear out the conclusions which they have reached, and apprehending that the best interests of the science are served by that record or enquiry which relates to the discovery of facts, I make no apology to these fathers in the science for transcribing in relation to this subject views somewhat dissimilar to theirs.

Agrotis obesula Smith is synonymous with the European Agrotis trux Hübner. Because of the fact that it was based on a "misidentified" type species, Agrotiphila Grote should be construed as a senior synonym of Agrotimorpha Barnes and Benjamin, and not of Orosagrotis Hampson.

Differs from typical gordius from the cast in its smaller size and more constrasted maculation, the costa and inner margin of forewing being shaded with deep smoky whilst the central portion of the wing is suffused with whitish shades, especially preceding the wavy subterminal dark line. Between this line and the outer margin of the wing the teriminal area is heavily suffused with deep smoky, in contradistinction to gordius borealis Clark in which this region is sprinkled with whitish, more as in the typical form. The dark intravenular streaks are reduced, much as in gordius oslari R. & J. from Colorado, but from this race the smaller size and the better defined transverse lines will distinguish it. Expanse 70 mm.

The microsporidian spores infecting some Canadian populations of Tyria jacobaeae have been characterized for the first time at the ultrastructural level. Differences exist between this microsporidian and others described at the same level elsewhere.

Forewings dentate, pulverulent, of a rather lighter grey than C.unijuga.... Median lines black, single, not very distinct. A whitish space before the large bisannulate concolorous reniform. sub-reniform likewise whitish, closed, joined to the t. p. line, the latter jagged but without very prominent discal teeth. making a deeper and narrower sinus altove vein than in C. unijuga. Subterminal upright. dentate, shade (preceding the blackish line) distinct.

While studying some material sent to me from the southern part of Caliicrnia, there came to my notice this very small species of bark beetle, which interested me greatly. While it is not of much economic importance, as are other members of the subfamily Hylesininae, it is of interest because of its host relationship to Chaetophloeus hystrix (Lec.). Both occur on Rhus integrifolia.

This is a new species and a description of the same follows.

Two flies have emerged from cocoons which had passed two winters. Last summer I noticed an example of mistaken instinct. The eggs of this species are laid under the lower epidermis by saw-cuts in the edge of the leaf. Several eggs so laid were found on Ilex verticillata. In due time the larvæ hatched, but refused their food, and would undoubtedly have perished had I not recognized them and supplied them with willow, which they attacked voraciously.

An outbreak of a sawfly, Pamphilius phyllisae Middlekauff, was discovered on northern red oak at Linn Run State Park, Pennsylvania, in 1964. The outbreak was unusual and probably unique because this previously unknown species suddenly attained populations of over 1 million ultimate instar larvae per acre. The reasons for the outbreak are not known but it arose near the end of a period of abnormally low precipitation and at a time when nearly complete encapsulation of parasites by the sawfly larvae was observed. The insect is confined to northern red oak, Quercus rubra L., and has a life cycle of 1, 2, or more years of which about 6 weeks are spent on the host tree. The life history, the history of the infestation, and the immature stages are described.

Meyrick's work on the Macrolepidoptera of the Hawaiian Islands is a revelation of our previous ignorance of that fauna, since he describes no less than 200 new species out of a total of 292.

Fota armata Grote.

This has somewhat the form of Stilbia; the fringes are long on secondaries. A second female like type in size has the black submedian dash wanting, and the filling on cell, but hind wings are like type in being pale fuscous. Base of forewings above pale ochrey shaded. Another has the primary all gray; Armata may be known by its larger size, fuscous secondary and different sculpture of clypeal armature.

Whether the following are really different I do not know I they appear to be so most certainly.

Discovery of the "lost types" of Xiphidium glaberrimum Burmeister, 1838, has made possible the clarification of use of several names which have been used for two species of Orchelimum. O. glaberrimum is shown to be the senior synonym for the species known as O. vulgare Harris, 1841. To preserve stability, an application has been made to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to suppress both glaberrimum Burmeister and cuticulare Audinet-Serville, 1838. O. erythrocephalum Davis, 1905, is removed from synonymy with O. glaberrimum, and is the valid name for that species. Characters for distinguishing vulgare and erythrocephalum are discussed and illustrated. Type specimens are designated for glaberrimum, cuticulare, and vulgare.

Plictran (tricyclohexyltin hydroxide) was very effective against the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and the apple rust mite, Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa), when applied at the pink bud stage of apple bud development. Plictran as a summer spray was not so effective because a small number of phytophagous mites survived. Plictran, however, is low in toxicity to the predaceous phytoseiids Metaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) and Typhloseiopsis sp. near arboreus (Chant), and these predators increased on the surviving phytophagous mites. Because of this selective action, Plictran is a very promising acaricide for use in integrated mite control programs.

In British Columbia the control of phytophagous mites, especially the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and the McDaniel spider mite, Tetranychus mcdanieli McG., is becoming increasingly difficult, mainly because of the mites' ability to develop resistance to most acaricides in a relatively short time (3). Because of this, methods of control other than strictly chemical are examined at every opportunity.

Since the preceeding accounts of the genera Evippe, Eidothea and Helice were sent to the publishers, I have taken a single speciment of the species described below. Its small size, general appearance and the tufts of raised scales at first inclined me to place it near Laruna; but a, closer examination shows it to belong to the Gelechidæ, and to the same group (or subsection of Gelechia) witin Evippe, &c. and Gelechia difficilisella.
