In the Fifty-sixth Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario, Mr. H. L. Viereck records a queen of Bremus kincaidii (Cockerell) from “Winter Ft. [specimen is labeled Winter H], Melville I [slandl, July 20, 1909 (F. C. Hennessey).” Due to the kindness of Dr. J. McDunnough this specimen was sent to me for examination. It proves to be either an unusually small queen, or a worker, of Bremus hyperboreus (Schonherr).

The spatial and frequency distributions of Douglas-fir cone moth, Barbara colfaxiana (Kearfott), eggs in Douglas-fir trees and stands were determined by dissecting 13 262 conelets collected from 81 trees in three sites and 2 years. There were no consistent trends in egg density associated with crown level or aspect. The frequency distribution of eggs per conelet fitted the negative binomial in three of five site-years but a common k for the negative binomial could not be calculated. Green’s index of aggregation suggested that the cone moth egg distribution was significantly aggregated in each site-year.

The optimal number of conelets per tree to sample was determined to be four in forest stands and three in seed orchards. The number of sample trees required for estimating mean egg density with 10% and 20% precision and 90% confidence was calculated for a range of mean egg densities using the method of Kuno. The sample sizes required to estimate a control threshold density of 0.6 eggs per conelet with 10% precision and 90% confidence were very large and would be impractical for operational use. Therefore, a sequential sampling plan was developed for use in seed orchards that would classify cone moth egg densities as either above or below a critical density at which 10% seed loss would be expected.

In the 22nd Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario, being that for 1891, there appeared a paper from my pen under the title “Can Insects Survive Freezing?”

I have recently come across further records of observations upon this subject, and deem them of sufficient interest to be republished in the Canadian Entomologist.

In looking over and interesting book of travels entitled “A Journey from Prince of Wales's Fort in Hudson's Bay to the Northern Ocean, undertaken by order of the Hudson's Bay Company for the discovery of copper mines, a north-west passage, etc., in the years 1769, 1770, 1771 and 1772, by Samuel Hearne,” published in 1796, I came across the following interesting notes on page 397

The following statement concerning dichloro-diphenyl-trichlorethane, or 2, 2-bis (parachlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane, more conveniently referred to as DDT, has been prepared in view of the widespread interest among entomologists in this product and in its pest control possibilities. It is based on information obtained from various sources.

Philanus spumarius, L. — From various localities in the New England States I have large series of the typical form of this species, and also specimens representing the well-marked varieties, leucocephala, L., and lineata, Fabr.

Philænus objectus, Uhl.— A portion at least of the material recorded under Lepyronia angulifera in the Prelim. List Hemip. Colo. belongs to this species. I have taken it at Fort Collins, Colo., and in the adjacent foothills, in May and June. The specimens from this locality are uniformly darker than the type.

This genus may be distinguished by the tufts of raised scales on the anterior wings. The antennae are more than half as long as the wings, simple, inserted just above the eyes. Head and face smooth, with appressed scales. Face rather broad. Tongue very short. No maxillary palpi; labial palpi curving around the sides of the head upwards, the tips approaching each other on the vertex, the third joint shorter than the second, which is laterally compressed and slightly clavate.

T. melanorhinus Big. I have a specimen from north-eastern Oregon which I suspect is the male of this species although the red on the sides of the abdomen is much more extensive than I have observed in any female (see Philip, 1936) involving the first four tergites and most of the venter, the rows of pale spots only suggested as a pale pollinosity in this sex.

The effects of seven gamma radiation dosages from 5 to 100 krad on all metamorphic stages of the spider beetle, Gibbium psylloides (Czenpinski), were studied. Five kilorads prevented development of adults from treated eggs and larvae. Some adults emerged from the pupal cocoon at all treatment levels except 50 and 100 krad, but their longevity was greatly reduced. Adults were fairly resistant to sterilizing effects of the radiation. Twenty kilokrads was not completely sterilizing to either males or females, but fecundity was greatly reduced. The longevity of treated adults was significantly reduced, but some survived for 20 weeks after a 20-krad exposure. Adults and pupae of this species were more radiation resistant than were most other stored-product Coleoptera.

The new cuticle is secreted around the old tentorium which breaks into four pieces. These pieces are withdrawn through the tentorial pits at the moult.

In the areae dentiparae, which slope far downward, nearly extending to the base of coxae III, this genus resembles Coelichneumonon Thoms. The propodeal slope, however, does not curve downward abruptly as in the latter genus, but slants gradually down in an oblique plane.

Gastrocoeli quite different from those typical of the Protichneumonini: much shallower and rather small, considerably narrower than their interval.

Postpetiole not longitudinally striated, but finely and irregularly reticulated in one species, almost smooth and shining in the other. Horizontal part of propodeum densely reticula-punctate, nearly opaque, costulae absent, areae superomedia and basalis not bordered by carinae, their place in one species indicated by a polished region.

The Acarina, especially the more minute forms, have been but little studied in America, a fact which seems the more strange when we consider what interesting objects they form for microscopic work. As in most groups of Arthropoda, the pioneer work in this country was done by Thomas Say, whose descriptions of a number of the larger species appeared as early as 1821. Later on Dana and Whelpley (1836), and Haldeman (1842), contributed descriptions of a few species. More recently Dr's. Fitch, Leidy, Packard, Riley, LeBaron and Shimer, and Mr. Ashmead, have published descriptions of species and notes on habits, while quite lately Mr. Harry Garman has published a valuable paper on the Phytoptidæ, which it is hoped he will follow up by still more extensive study of this family.

The following report deals with the description of one apparently undescribed species from Artemisia, and distributional notes on several additional aphid species belonging to the genus Capitophorus.

The following is a description of Limochores bimacula, Scuds ♂ , Hesperia acanoatus, Scudd., which I drew up some time ago:-

Dark brown marked with chrome yellow.

Above: head, thorax, abdomen and antennae black, the head and abdomen having a few yellow hairs. Both wings dark olive brown; primaries with a indistinct spot a little above and beyond the outer termination of the disk; a large patch extends over the middle third from the outer margin to the disc, and is crossed by a black velvety dash, which if continued would bisect the apical angle

EGG—Conoidal, truncated, broad at base, the sides moderately rounded ; depressed at summit; marked by about eighteen prominent, vertical, slightly wavy ribs, half of which extend from base to summit and form around the latter a serrated rim ; the remainder end irregularly at two thirds to three quarters distance from base ; between each pair of ribs are equidistant transverse striæ. Broader at base than Alcestis or Idalia. Duration of this stage 12 to 17 days.

The two chilopods described below were found in collections recently sent me for identification by the Federal-Horticultural Board and by Mr. R. D. Harwood of Cornell University. The types are in the author's collection.

Good organization of a scientific paper benefits both the writer and the reader. It enables the author to develop his subject systematically and logically, and to attain his objective with greater clarity, brevity, and emphasis. It provides the reader with a plan that he can follow and so keeps him attuned throughout to the writer's thought sequence. This contributes to comfortable reading and to better communication of information—worthy objectives in any type of writing. Lack of organization leads to confusion for both writer and reader.
