Apterous Viviparous Female. Colour when alive: antenna pale on basal half; head and thorax brownish; mesothorax to abdominal segment VIII shining black; legs pale. Colour when macerated: antennal segments I and II pale brown, segments III, IV colourless with pale brown apical annuli, segments V, VI brown; head and prothorax pale brown, nearly colourless; mesothorax to abdominal segment VIII dark brown; cornicles dark brown; femora and tibiae pale brown, nearly colourless; tarsi pale brown, slightly darker than tibiae; cauda faintly fuscous.

The third report of the U. S. Entomological Commission, Washington, 1883, contains an excellent paper on the Hessian Fly, by Prof. A. S. Packard, p. 195-248, and in the appendix, p. 3-49, the translation of German papers by Loew, Wagner, Cohn, Koeppen, formerly not known by the Professor; also a reprint of my paper in the Can. Ent., Oct., 1880, “The Hessian Fly not imported from Europe.” The Professor accepts now (p. 238): That the Hessian Fly had appeared in the Eastern U. S. before the Revolutionary War, and that it could not have been introduced by the Hessians. He was not able to find in the files of the Pennsylvania Mercury and Philadelphia Packet some reference to the earlier occurrence of the H. Fly (App. p. 3).

At the time of writing the paper on the red-winged Catocalæ* I thought I should very soon complete the list; but other matters have too long crowded out the work I had planned to do. I shall now give, however, my idea of how they should be arranged, with some notes on some of the species.

During studies of the attractiveness of essential oils to insects associated with Douglas-fir cones, traps baited with citronellol attracted male Prenolepis imparis (Say), the small honey ant. Citronellol was previously reported as present in the mandibular glands of worker and male ants (Law et al. 1965; Blum et al. 1968).

The small honey ant is a ground nesting species frequently encountered in woodlands and noted for tending plant-sucking insects. Behavior of colonies has not been intensively studied, but it is known that alate ants leave the colony in March and April for a nuptial flight (Smith 1965).

The present paper is intended as a supplement to our knowledge of the Canadian species of Sagaritis, a genus which has been monographed by Mr. H. L. Viereck in his “Preliminary Revision of the Campopleginae in the Canadian National Collection,” published serially in the Canadian Entomologist, Vols. LVII, LVIII.

In order to avoid needless repetition, I wish here to express my sincere thanks to Prof. John B. Smith and Dr. H. G. Dyar for numerous favours, and also to Mr. O. C. Poling for his great liberality in furnishing me with many of the species here described. Mr. Poling has made a number of collecting trips to little known parts of Arizona and Utah, and in addition to many new species has turned up many rare forms discovered years ago by Morrison and Doll. The fauna of Southern Arizona is essentially Mexican, and as there is at present no collection of Mexican Lepidoptera in this country worth mentioning, one in describing apparently new species from that region is certain to make synonyms.

It is 16 years since the Rev. G. D. Hulst undertook a revision of this genus along the lines of “Structural Characters.” As a new Check List of the moths is to be published soon, it seems proper that another arrangement of the genus be made. The structure of the genitalia as a basis of the separation of the species has been regarded by many eminent lepidopterists as of doubtful value. It is certain that in this genus its use was not warranted by larval characters or field observation. For these reasons the last revision has not been satisfactory to those who were familiar with many species in their native haunts, or who had bred them. The writer does not say, however, that the present revision will be faultless, for as yet too few of the species are known in their adolescent stages to make this much of an aid in classification.

Two of the species described below were discovered very recently and constitute a very interesting addition to our Melyrid fauna. The individuals or units of a species vary more or less and this variation makes the work of the taxonomist rather uncertain and difficult as regards the characterization of a species, until considerable series has been studied from some single locality. When a knowledge of the range and degree of variation has once been obtained, the systematist can proceed with greater confidence as regards the status of the species he describes. Collectors should bear in mind the need of series for the study of variation.

Female black flies may be sorted into two age groups, the nulliparous and the parous, by the changes in the ovary including the absence or presence of follicular relics. This highly accurate method, developed in Russia and England for Anopheles mosquitoes (Beklemishev 1944; Lewis 1958a), has been recently adapted for use with black flies (Lewis 1958b; Davies 1961).

In research on fumigants it was found that variations in the proportions and amounts of the normal atmospheric gases (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide), both during and after exposure to the toxicant, had profound effects on the mortality responses of the insects.

At reduced pressures (vacuum fumigation) the mortality response of the insects is complex (Monro 1959). With certain insects at least four zones of differing susceptibility were found. These are typified by the case of the cadelle, Tenebroides mauritanicus L.

In 1944 a forest research project involving industry and two levels of government was set up to integrate entomological, pathological, silvicultural and management studies aimed at the control of the spruce budworm through forest management. The entomological phase of this praject, called the ‘Green River Project’, was initiated in 1945, and by 1949 was deeply involved in the budworm outbreak that occurred in northern New Brunswick during the period 1949-59. The basic aim was to elucidate the population dynamics of the budworm during an outbreak.

Some recently discovered changes in nomenclature led to the preparation of a synopsis of the Nearctic species of Chloropisca, which is presented with notes upon the distribution as checked by the writer and a key to the eleven known species. Chloropisca sulfurifrons Duda is included with some doubt.

It is rather remarkable that among a group as common as Chloropisca so little is known regarding the life history and habits. Chloropisca glabra is the only species in which the life history is well known. Its larvae are predaceous upon root aphids,and are especially important predators of the sugar beet root aphis, Pemphigus betae Doane.

The notes and descriptions that follow arise from material submitted for identification from various sources over the past few years. Doubtless much still remains to be discovered in this genus, and a general revision would be premature at this time. The number of striking new species is surprising: every new collection seems to yield one or two more. Despite the great superficial variation in the genus, the genitalia are very uniform. The main structural variation externally is in the mouth-parts, the labial palpi varying considerably in length and the tongue tending towards obsolescence in many species. There seems to be considerable variation in development of the tongue even in single species, and I doubt if this can form the basis of subdivision of the genus. Most or all of the old-world species and some new-world ones have been wrongly referred to this genus; however, I shall leave the disposition of these extraneous elements to a future paper.
