The elm spanworm, Ennomos subsignarius (Hübner), a defoliator of oaks and hickories in the Southern Appalachians, was reared under three population densities — one, two, and four larvae per cage. The size of the group influenced to a degree the time spent in the larval stage, but was even more significantly related to the duration of the hatch to adult period. Although male pupal weight was not related to group size, female weight and fecundity were. Females reared singly had significantly greater pupal weight and fecundity than those reared in groups.

The published records of the occurrence of coccids in Massachusetts are so scattered and the number found to exist is so large, that it seems quite desirable that they should be brought together and published in one entomological journal. So far as I can learn from careful search of the literature up to January, 1896, there had been only 13 species recorded. Since then the list has increased to 74. A list of the 13 species is: Aspidiotus perniciousus, Mytilaspsis pomorum, Chionapis furfurus, C. spartinae, Aulacaspis bromeliae, Dactylopius adonidum, Phenacoccus aceris, Gossyparia ulmi, Orthezia insignis, Pulvinaria innumerabilis, Lecanium hesperidum, L. platycerii, and L. filicum. A check-list reference-list of the literature of Massachusetts Coccidae will be published in a supplementary article.

Melissodes brevicornis, Cress.—Lincoln, Aug. 12–27, on Teucrium Canadense. The ♀ differs from the ♂ only in having the face-parts black, pubescence on face lighter, segments 2 to 4 only banded; the scopa is yellowish. The ♂ ♂ taken all bad the tibiæ and tarsi entirely fulvous.

The genus Cymbolus Gorham is peculiar to the American tropics. Of the five previously described species, two are from Mexico, two are from Guatemala, and the fifth is from Brazil. I take great pleasure in naming the following species in honor of Mr. A. B. Wolcott through whose efforts I first became interested in the study of this genus.

Lygus Chagnoni, n. sp.— This species of the genus Lygus is of a form near to L. pabulinus, Linn., in appearance.

It is ovate, convex bright green in living specimens, with irregular purplish-brown markings at the base of the membrane, smooth and without bristles, and a silky pubesecence on the sides of the pronotum, which has an orange-yellow border next the head, shading backwards in narrow lines into the green coloration, so as to make the reen appear in broad bands.

The larva of Ixodes cookei Packard, a common ixodid tick in eastern North America, is described. The description is based on specimens hatched from eggs in the laboratory. The eggs were from females collected from groundhogs (Marmota monax Erxleben) trapped in spring in southern Ontario.

Noctueliopsis rhodoxanthinalis, a striking pink and yellow species from western Texas, is described as new. It is not close to any described species, but is compared with N. pandoralis (Barnes and McDunnough, 1914), Mojavia achemonalis (Barnes and McDunnough, 1914), and Mojaviodes blanchardae Munroe, 1972.

In making a study of the Provancher types of Ichneumonidæ while at Quebec a year ago last winter, the type of many of the more recent descriptions was not found in the collection. Since that time types of many of the Abbé's latest descriptions have been found to be with the ones who sent the material, and are not lost, as was at first feared. Mr. W. H. Harrington, of Ottawa, has quite a number of these types, and through his kindness and generosity I have been privileged to study the types in his possession. The following notes are the result of this review:

Ichneumon citrinus ♂ = Hepiopelmus, Wesm.—This would be an Amblyteles by Cresson's synopsis.

In the following list 283 species are enumerated, 34 not determined specifically, and there are 8 species unknown, making a total of 325 species. I am much indebted to Mr. W. H. Harrington for his very great kindness and valued assistance in identifying these insects.

The following notes on the habits of several insects are from a record of entomological observations kept during the past four years, and although imperfect, they may serve as a hint to others to pursue observations in the directions indicated.

During the past season few unusual specimens were taken and very few notes made. Diurnal Lepidoptera (with the single exception of P. cardui, which had been rare for some years) were unusually scarce. Pieris rapœ is becoming less numerous every year, owing, probably, to its many parasites. Moths were not so abundant as usual, and the only capture worthy of notice was the re-occurrence of Aletia xylina Say (the cotton-worm moth), a single good fresh specimen of which was taken October 26th, in the woods, among leaves near a butternut tree.

Three species of aphids in the subfamily Eriosomatinae are recorded from poplar trees in southern Alberta. Asiphum sacculi Gillette caused galls on leaves of Populus tremuloides Michaux in the foothill and mountain areas. Thecabius populiconduplifolius Cowen caused galls on leaves of Populus balsamifera L. in the prairie area. Pemphigus bursarius L., the lettuce root aphid, caused galls on leaves of Populus nigra var. italica Meunchhausen in a garden. P. bursarius could become a pest of lettuce in southern Alberta.

A study of the American genus Lagoa in its various stages of growth shows a manifest approach to the present group, so that we are warranted in following the Dasychirinœ with the Cochliinœ. This sub-family is remarkable for its peculiar larvæ, called “slug caterpillars” or “saddlebacks.” The first name is given on account of their snail-like appearance, the form being elliptical or oval, the false feet replaced by swellings on the abdominal segments, so that the larva lies flat and close tothe leaf. The head is also retractille.
