Saperda Fayi, Bland.—This beautiful Saperda breeds in the small limbs of Crataegus, especially crus-galli and tomentosa, as first observed by Mr. C. D. Zimmermann, Can. Ent., 10, 220; and should it, like some of its allies, acquire a taste for cultivated fruit trees, it would be a formidable enemy, as is evidenced by the way it depredates on thorn bushes. The beetles appear here the last week in May or the first week in June, according to the season, the males preceding the females three or four days.

The larvae of Macrotheca angulalis Barnes & McDunnough and Alpheias sp. are described and illustrated. A comparison is made between these and the larvae of Galleriinae.

Names have been requested for the following Ichneumonidae for use in publications on the parasites of a lepidopterous twig borer (Argyresthia lariccella Kft.) on tamarack (Larix laricina DuRoi).

Phaeogenes laricellae, new species

This species is closely related to P. epinotiae Cush. but may be distinguished by the very elongated and flattened thorax (of normal build in epinotiae), the smooth and shining clypeus (mostly coriaceous in epinotiae), and the small sub-apical ridge on the female hind coxa (hind coxa unarmed in female epinotiae).

The following new species of Eleodes have recently, come to hand and are described as follows:

Eleodes indentata n. sp. (Subgenus Blapylis Horn.)

Female—From ovate, about twice as long as wide, widest across middle of the elytra. Color deep black, luster polisheci ancl shining.

Head slightly widest across the eyes, before the post-ocular line a little more than twice as wide as long; sides of the front scarcely as prominent as the eyes, arcuately convergent to the oblique sutures and there broadly sinuate; sides of the epistoma straight and convergent, angles evenly. rounded, apex broadly sinuate : frons feebly convex, s1ight1y and broadly impressed within the moderatc supra-antennal convexities, very densely punctate, punctures coarse and more or less coalescent, smaller on the occiput. Labmrum transverse, densely punctete in apical one-half, thence to base smooth and very sparsel punctate.

The new genera and species described below are based upon material collected largely in the western United States and Canada. The types represented by Canadian material, which was loaned for study through the courtesy of A. R. Brooks, are returned to the National Collection at Ottawa. Unless otherwise specified under the descriptions, the remainder of the type specimens are in my collection.

My last paper on the Coleoptera of Florida mas prepared in the autumn of 1927, and published in the Canadian Entomologist for March, 1928. I spent the winter of 1927-28 in California and did not return to Florida until November, 1928. During the winter of 1928-29 circumstances were such that I did little collecting, and that only about Dunedin, until March, when I made a visit to Gainesville, Fla.

The principal developmental stages and the female reproductive system of Grypocentrus albipes Ruthe are briefly described and illustrated. The oviposition pattern is described. Females chew through the leaf tissue and gnaw on Fenusa pusilla (Lep.) larvae while the larvae are in their larval mines. The average fecundity in laboratory experiments was 3.2 eggs per day, and the maximum number of eggs deposited by one female was 96. Some observations are presented on egg and larval development as well as on pupation.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to identify the overwintering stage of the fir coneworm, Dioryctria abietivorella (Grote), in eastern Canada and determine the influence of photoperiod on diapause induction. In another experiment, different developmental stages were exposed to field conditions to evaluate their capacity to survive the overwintering period. Insects were either placed in the duff or exposed to ambient (above ground) conditions to assess the importance of overwintering site on winter survival. Exposure of the fir coneworm to constant short-days or a daily decreasing photoperiod during larval development induced almost all insects to initiate diapause at the fifth instar. Third-, fourth-, and fifth-instar larvae survived the overwintering period when placed in the duff. Because the fir coneworm must leave its host tree and drop to the ground to avoid rigorous winter conditions, we concluded that only fifth-instar larvae could resume development in spring using such a strategy.

Most of the records which follow are the compilation of field work during the period of September 1936 to September 1937 and the summer of 1938 while I was a member of the faculty of the University of Miami. Several able Orthopterists, particularly J. A. G. Rehn, Morgan Hebard, W. T. Davis, A P. Morse, and T. H. Hubbell have collected widely in southeastern United States, describing many new species.

The following new species are described: Myodopsylla globata, from bats, and Kohlsia martini, from rice rats, Oryzomys sp. Ceratophyllus altus Tipton and Mendez, known formerly only from the unique type, a male from Panama, was collected in numbers from nests of sparrow hawks, Falco sparverius tropicalis, and pygmy owls, Glaucidium sp.; the female is described.

Moths of the genus Dioryctria are important insect pests of North American conifers (Baker 1972). Of the species that occur in the southern United States, e.g., D. clarioralis (Walker), D. disclusa (Heinrich), and D. ebeli Mutuura and Munroe, the southern pine coneworm, Dioryctria amatella (Hulst), is the most destructive (Ebel et al. 1975). Our paper reports the results of laboratory tests aimed at determining the relative toxicities of commercially available or promising experimental insecticides to D. amatella larvae.

In the latter part of May, 1933, larvae of this species were found feeding in the leaves of Hieracium scoueri Hook. Their presence was easily detected by the great distortion caused to the leaves, which were webbed together, particularly at the terminal ends, thus arresting normal development. All were collected at Pullman, Washington, by the writer.

Some years ago, I received from Prof. G. J. Hinde, of Toronto, a twig of juniper about as thick as, and a little longer than, one's finger, which he had taken from interglacial deposits at Scarboro', near Toronto, and which showed the marks where beetles had bored the surface just beneath where the bark had been. From the same locality a number of remains of beetles have also been found, mostly Carabidæ, two of which I described at the time as new species of Loricera and Loxandrus. The others still remain unpublished, but there are none among them which could have made these borings, as these are evidently the peculiar work of some species of Scolytidæ, and apparently one of the Hylurgini, though in our very imperfect knowledge of the characteristics of the mines made by existing forms of this family, it is difficult to pronounce on its relations.

Populations of Orius spp. were surveyed in the lower Fraser Valley, British Columbia, to determine whether O. insidiosus Say, a non-indigenous species, had established in the region as a result of being released inside greenhouses for biological control of pests. Field collections over 8 years revealed a low incidence of O. insidiosus (10 specimens, <1% of total Orius spp. collected). Numbers in collections did not increase, and collection localities did not become more widespread over the 8 years of survey. Competitive exclusion and temperature and diapause thresholds are discussed as possible mechanisms limiting the establishment of this otherwise widespread North American species.

Dactynotus caligatus is described. It is a large green aphid that infests Solidago spp., and can be readily distinguished by the two parallel rows of tubercles on the dorsum of the abdomen.

It has now been well established that the cuticle of many insects is covered by a discrete layer of lipoidal material. Ramsay (26), Wigglesworth (32), Beament (4), and others have shown that the rate of evaporation-temperature curves from insects are characterized by breaks occuring at a “critical” temperature. In the previous paper of this seriis, Chefurka and Pepper (8) have shown that the rate of evaporation-temperature curves from Melanoplus bivittatus show a transition region from approximately 43 to 50°C.
