Infectivity tests revealed that sensitivity of larvae of Archips cerasivoranus Fitch to infection by a commercial preparation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner depends on the physiological condition of the insects (determined by age and nutrition), and temperature, but mostly on the presence or absence of infection by the microsporidia Plisliphora sp. and Nosema cerasivoranus Thomson.

Mortality attributable to the bacillus was 90, 40, and 30% for healthy third-, fifth-, and seventh-instar larvae after 20 days, mortality reached 90% after 3, 9, and 19 days for larvae of the same ages naturally infected by microsporidia. Also, low temperatures decreased the effect of the pathogen and starvation reduced the resistance of larvae to infection.

The results obtained suggest the action of B. thuringiensis in this tortricid is to provoke generalized septicemia rather than toxemia.

Other infectivity tests made with cultures of B. thuringiensis and Bacillus cereus Frankland and Frankland confirmed these results. The action of the two bacteria was similar, both provoking septicemia in the insect. This effect was considerably increased by the presence of protozoan diseases.

Analyses of unsaturated lipids by the iodine number method showed that infection by a microsporidian or B. thuringiensis lowered considerably the energy value index. The index reached 13.0, 25.5, and 27.0 in healthy larvae of third-, fifth-, and seventh-instar, was reduced to 5.2, 17.0, and 15.0 by a microsporidian infection, and to 7.5, 18.0, and 22.5 by a B. thuringiensis infection. When an infection with both pathogens was induced, the value decreased to 4.0, 8.0, and 7.5.

Last September, my wife and I visited the Prince Albert National Park, particularly to see Grey Owl and Anahareo and the beavers at Ajawaan Lake. The country was entirely new to me, and I found very much of interest. Saskatchewan is divided into two very different parts. The southern half has some large lakes, but is essentially a prairie region, where vast quantities of wheat are grown. As we crossed a portion of it travelling from Calgary to Saskatoon, the landscape was monotonous and not very interesting. But the northern half of the province is in complete ccntrast. It is a land of dense forests, with innumerable lakes, large and small. These lakes are warm enough in summer to be the delight of innumerable bathers, but covered with thick ice all winter. This region is in the Canadian zone, whereas the prairie region belongs to the Transition. In the northern (especially north eastern) part of the province is a large area in the Hudsonian zone, sufficiently distinct in aspect to be easily recognised from an aeroplane, I was informed.

A multiple regression analysis was used to establish which weather factors and population parameters were important in determining the emergence pattern of the spring flight of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hbn.), as measured by light trap catches. Equations which estimated the slope and intercept of a line representing the probit of cumulative percentage emergence vs. degree days had as independent variables the intercept of the previous year’s regression line and the average temperature for the preceding September, December, February, and April. A comparison of methods used to estimate the emergence pattern showed that the average deviation of the average date method was 5.0 days, the average slope and intercept method 2.8 days, and multiple regression method 1.6 days.

Limenitis lorquinii, Boisd.

Egg,—Nearly spherical, the base flat; covered with elevated reticulations from the intersections of which arise short spines. The depressions between the reticulations are rounded. Colour pale green with a silvery lustre. Diameter .9 mm. Laid singly at the extreme tip of a leaf on the upper surface.

1. In his Coleopterological Notices, V., p. 594, Mr. Casey described a new genus of Aleocharini under tire name of Myrmobiota (crassicornis, Cas., n. sp.) as allied to Homœusa, Kr. The only specimen was captured at Iowa City (Iowa) by Mr. H. F. Wickham. Some time afterwards I received three specimens of an insect very like our Homœusa, under the name of Myrmobiota crassicornis, Cas., one directly form Mr. Wickham (captured at Iowa City, June 6, 1896), two through the kindness of Rev. P. J. Schmitt (captured by Wickham at Iowa City, bearing Wickham's number, 9561). After having compared this species attentively with our Homœusa acuminata, I could not doubt that it belonged to the same genus as the latter. I publisherd a note on this subject in the Tijdschrift voor Entomologie, XLI., 1898, p. 11, declaring Myrmobiota to be the same genus as Homœusa.

6. Oligotoma Westwoodi, n. sp.

Length of body 4½ mill.; exp. of wings 7 mill.

Male: As the specimen is enclosed in copal (Gummi anime), the colours are not certain, but the head, with antennæ and palpi, the thorax and the legs in part, seem to have been blackish-fuscous; head more Raphidia-like than in any other species; more than half longer than broad; the rounded sides sloping down, the occiput less than half as broad as the front part with the eyes; head above slightly convex, epistom large, convex; eyes large, prominent, about orbicular, with a small excision for the insertion of the antennæ; facets large, globose; antennæ long, reaching the end of the metathorax, inserted in a longer socket, 15-jointed; 1st joint a little thicker, cylindrical, half as broad as long; 2nd as long as broad; all others obclavate, to three times longer than broad, but the 3rd to 5th a little shorter than the rest, the last one more ovoid, with tip rounded; there seems not to be wanting any joint more. Labrum large, rounded, a little darker in middle; max. palpi 5-jointed, the three basals alike, short, as broad as long; 4th a little longer,5th longer, ovoid; labial palpi 3-jointed, apical joint longer, ovoid.

The primary type specimens of Lepidoptera in the collection of the Lyman Entomological Museum and Research Laboratory are listed. Taxa described by Lyman and three species described by Fyles and Grote are included. Lectotypes are designated where necessary.

Foliage of Douglas-fir and grand fir bearing egg masses of the western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman, was collected from sites in Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Later, 4154 of these egg masses were examined in the laboratory. The average number of eggs per mass was 47.5 ± 10.65 (range 23–58). The number of eggs in a mass increased as defoliation of current foliage increased from none to moderate. The average number of eggs per linear millimeter of a single row ranged among sites from 1.24 ± 0.02 to 2.43 ± 0.21. The average number of eggs per linear millimeter of a row was highest (1.99) among the sites studied in Idaho, and lowest (1.58) among the sites studied in Oregon.

Unquestionably, this group is closely related to the Crabronidae, where most authorities have placed it; but, to me, the quiet different shaped head, the absence of the basal abscissa of the cubitus in the front wings, and the remarkable formation of the scutellum and postscutellum, characters not found in any other group, seem to justify one in separating it from the Crabronidae and treating it as a distinct family.

The group was first recognized as a subfamily in 1874, by c. G. Thomson, in his Skandinaviens Hymenoptera, Vol. III., p. 256.

In 1862 H. C. Wood described a new centipede, Mecistocephalus fulvus, which he found “not very abundantly” in the vicinity of Philadelphia. To my knowledge no subsequent worker has ever attempted to refer a centipede to this species, nor has fulvus ever been considered a synonym of any other species, so that for eighty-eight years it has been regarded privately or in print as being incertae sedis.

The confusion surrounding this species has been due primarily to the following considerations: it has never been taken by anyone other than its author; the type is missing; it was highly improbable that this species could be referred to Mecistocephalidae, or even to Mecistocephalus, a genus represented in the eastern United States by a single imported species; and the original description itself refers to a centipede not quite like anything else known to occur in the east.

Length 3.7 mm.; width 1.7 mm. Body form as in palustris Blatch. Black; the elytra with a greenish lustre, not at all bluish: the basal half of the head, antennae, and legs pale red; the basal segment and four terminal segments of each antenna distinctly infuscate; femora and the apical half of each terminal tarsal segment heavily infuscate.

The comosa group of the genus Euxoa is defined on the basis of genital characters. The species in the group are: comosa (Morrison), lineifrons (Smith), guadalupensis new species, lucida Barnes and McDunnough, fumalis (Grote), and occidentalis new species. On the basis of geographical variation of adults, life history data, and experimental hybridization, populations of E. comosa are arranged in five subspecies. Adults and genitalia are illustrated and a synopsis is given for each species and subspecies.

The season of activity of P. pallipes begins about the last of April. My notes show that on April 24, 1920, a survey of the Wickes region discovered no wasp enterprises whatsoever; April 28 in 1921 found a few queens out on the flowers and a few just beginning their nests; the most progressive had completed three cells.

During the course of recent collecting in Illinois, an interesting species of aphid has been discovered on sedges (Carex sp.). It differs so radically, however from all species hitherto described in that genus that a new subgenus has been proposed for its reception. In view of the recent publication on the “Aphiidae of Illinois” and the very interesting character of the species it seems advisable to describe it at this time.

The Leng check list (1920) records under Scotochroa, which is a distinctly American genus established by Leconte in 1874, two species, S. atra Lec. and S. basalis Lec. Scotochroa buprestoides Kirby (described in 1837 as a Xylita) is listed under atra, indicating it as either a synonym or as being questionable as a valid species. The Csiki Catalogue of the Serropalpidae (1924) lists one species, atra, under Scotochroa with buprestoides given under this and with basalis as a variety. The Supplement of the Leng list (1927) records basalis as a variety of atra. The general question as to the species in this group seems to warrant a review of the genus with a key to the species.

Occasions frequently arise in entomological work when it is necessary to handle large numbers of insect eggs. If the eggs are to be counted or treated, it is often necessary that they be held in a fixed position. A technique has been devised at the Ottawa laboratory by which many eggs can be handled and held with great ease. The eggs to be treated are placed on a sheet of Saran Wrap (Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Mich.). The static charge on the plastic is strong ennugh to hold the eggs securely. After treatment the eggs can be removed by means of a moist brush. This method is ideal for topical application studies and, if the Saran Wrap is backed with aluminum foil, it may be used to make excellent micro weighing dishes with adhesive qualities.
