The immature stages of Panzeria ampelus (Walker) are described and illustrated.

The San José scale, Aspidiotus perniciosus Comstock, died within 8 to 22 weeks on McIntosh, Red Delicious, Common Delicious, Winesap, Rome Beauty, and Newtown apples harvested on commercial picking dates and placed in standard cold storage. The scale died in much shorter periods on early maturing varieties than on late maturing varieties.

The later a variety was harvested the longer the fruit had to be stored to kill the scale. The maximum storage period was 32 weeks for Winesaps and Newtowns harvested in early November, approximately 1 month after the commercial picking date.

The storage period required to kill the San José scale on Winesap apples varied from year to year, cool weather in early autumn apparently increasing the storage period.

Leaf-miners associated with common cultivated plants are especially liable to become esrahlished in new areas through transportation with their hosts, and this possibility should always be considered when the agrommyzids of poorly-known faunal regions are studied, so that redescription of such species as new forms may he avoided. One of the species here recorded for thc first time from both Chile and Easter Island is a case in point. Phytobia maculosa (Malloch), known as a leaf-miner in cultivated Chrysanthemum in the U.S.A. since 1896 (though not correctly recognized and described until 1913), has since been redescribed from the same host plant in southern Brazil. Its known hosts now include 13 genera of Compositae and it is evidently widespread in the U.S.A., in the West Indies, and in temperate South America. It also occurs in Hawaii. Although not so far reported in Canada it almost certainly will be found in southern Ontario and British Columbia. Horticulture, both private and commercial, must have greatly assisted its spread in North America and elsewhere.

From 1981 to 1984, a “looper” complex was responsible for the defoliation of approximately 648 000 ha of hardwood forests in several counties of eastern West Virginia. The complex consisted primarily of four species of Geometridae (Lepidoptera) with larval composition at three study sites in 1983 ranging from 77 to 94% for the half-wing geometer, Phigalia titea (Cramer); 2-13% for the linden looper, Erannis tiliaria (Harris); 8% for Phigalia strigataria (Minot); and 1–2% for the fall cankerworm, Alsophila pometaria (Harris) (Butler 1985a, 1985b, 1986).

Pholetesor ornigis (Weed) from 16 orchards in seven Ontario apple production areas were tested from 1987 to 1989 to determine if their levels of resistance to permethrin and methomyl were higher than those measured earlier in two Ontario populations and if they had developed resistance to azinphosmethyl. Higher levels of resistance were not detected and there was no evidence of resistance to azinphosmethyl. Some possible reasons for the lack of higher levels of insecticide resistance and some alternatives to insecticide resistance for parasite conservation are discussed.

A lightweight and inexpensive cylindrical-sleeve insect cage is described. The cage was constructed of plastic screening and cotton fabric closed by an open-ended zipper. The cage was successfully used to collect insects from rust cankers on the stems and branches of pine trees.

In March, 1946, the writers reported in Scientific Agriculture (1) that benzene hexachloride showed pronounced fumigant action and that air currents as slow as 2 m.p.h. lowered its effectiveness against insects to a marked extent. The present paper deals with further experiments with benzene hexachloride and gives preliminary data on the fumigant action and effect of air currents on three other chlorinated hydrocarbons, viz., DDT, Hercules Toxicant 3956 (a chlorinated terpene) and Velsicol 1068 (a mixture of isomers with the empirical formul C10 H6 Cl8).

The eggs, larvae, and pupae of Steremnius carinatus (Boh.) are described and characters given to distinguish them from those of Steremnius tuberosus Boh. A key separates the larvae and pupae of S. carinatus from those of S. tuberosus, species of Pissodes, and Scolytidae. The relationship of Steremnius to Pissodes and Hylobius is discussed briefly.

Having spent considerable time during the past season in the collection and study of various larval forms of our twilight and night-fliers, I was peculiarly impressed with the novel colors, markings, and external structural characters presented by those that were taken late in the autumn, at the period when the leaves were donning their autumnal hues. To one who has rendered himself familiar rvith their usual outward characters, a moment's inspection was sufficient to show a marked contrast between those taken early in the season, when the leaves were fresh and green, and those captured later, when the foliage of the trees had sustained a check to their vitality. That these larval changes have a producing cause it shall be my aim to show in the conclusion of the present article.

The performance of unbaited emergence traps and attractant-baited pitfall and flight traps was compared on the basis of suitability to produce population indices for two beetles, Steremnius carinatus (Boheman) and Hylastes nigrinus (Mannerheim), colonizing roots of Douglas fir in northern California. These beetles transmit Ceratocystis wageneri Goheen and Cobb, the fungus causing black stain root disease in Douglas fir. Trap sites were near stumps along transect lines through recently logged areas. Pitfall traps were judged the most promising for both species based on their relatively high catches and low expense. Although catch by emergence traps was low for both species, they appeared to catch the majority of S. carinatus. For both species, pitfall trap catches varied with date, study area, trapping line within study area, and stump within line. A number of variables, such as diameter of stump or type of ground cover, were significantly correlated with trap catch, and made significant contributions to linear models with catch as the dependent variable. Differences between study areas in the effect of variables on catch, and the possibility that pitfall trapping is subject to artifacts, suggested that the results of pitfall trapping need to be carefully scrutinized if they are to be used as a population index.

This insect was first noticed during the summer of 1939 in a young red pine plantation in the vicinity of Berthierville, Que. A large number of mature larvae were collected at the end of the same season and placed on the foliage of small red pine trees enclosed in wire cages in the field. The larvae soon left the trees to enter the soil for overwintering. The following spring, numerous adults emerged in the cages, and in order to obtain an identification, several specimens were sent to Dr. O. Peck, Entomology Division, Ottawa, who considered that this was apparently a new species of the genus Cephalcia. Later, many specimens were sent to Dr. W. W. Middlekauff, of the University of California, who described the species under the name C. marginata (1953).

Hyposoter parorgyiae (Vier.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a parasite that emerges from the mature larva of Parorgyia plagiata (Wlk.) (Lepidoptera: Liparidae), was found to have a false cocoon. The twelve specimens examined were collected in Ontario and Quebec, and are in the Canadian National Collection, Ottawa, Ontario.

A three-year field study in northeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, determined the effects of seeding date and seed treatment on feeding injury by Contarinia Róndani (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) midges to canola, Brassica napus Linnaeus (Brassicaceae), and subsequent seed yield. Emergence cage monitoring indicated the presence of two generations of midges at the four locations observed. Intensity of midge injury to canola was low, but damaged plants were common. Field location and seeding date influenced probability of midge injury and canola growth stage. The wettest of the four locations had the greatest number of midges but low levels of probability of damage in two of three years. Early-seeded plots had higher injury probability than late-seeded plots, with the highest probability of injury occurring one to two weeks after flowering commenced. Seed treatment marginally affected midge injury ratings, suggesting that insecticide efficacy dissipated before the midges attacked. Seed yield was higher in early-seeded than in late-seeded plots in two of three years, despite the greater level of damage seen in early-seeded plots. Overall, the research showed that the agronomic benefits of early seeding outweighed the effects of the midge damage observed; therefore, producers in the Canadian prairie provinces should seed canola when conditions are most agronomically suitable.

A new species, Roederiodes petersoni, described from Utah, is a member of the juncta group, distinguished by its smooth face and incomplete postocular bristle row. Brief notes on distribution and synonymy of other species of the genus are given.

Anthobioides pubescens, an unusual new genus and new species of rove beetle, is described from the Olympic and Mt. Rainier National Parks, WA. The genus is assigned to the Anthobium-group of genera in the tribe Anthophagini, subfamily Omaliinae. The new genus represents the sister group of the genus Camioleum Lewis from Japan. The phylogeny of Anthobioides and Camioleum and their relationship to the other four genera assigned to the Anthobium-group is discussed. All pertinent characters of Anthobioides are illustrated by line drawings or scanning electron photomicrographs.
