We present two applications of explicit formulas, due to Cuntz and Krieger, for computations in $K$-homology of graph $C^{\ast }$-algebras. We prove that every $K$-homology class for such an algebra is represented by a Fredholm module having finite-rank commutators, and we exhibit generating Fredholm modules for the $K$-homology of quantum lens spaces.

We demonstrate that many properties of topological spaces connected with the notion of resolvability are preserved by the relation of similarity between topologies. Moreover, many of them can be characterised by the properties of the algebra of sets with nowhere dense boundary and the ideal of nowhere dense sets. We use these results to investigate whether a given pair of an algebra and an ideal is topological.

We investigate conjectures and questions regarding topological phenomena related to free actions on homotopy spheres and present some affirmative answers.

Given a positive Borel measure ${\it\mu}$ on the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, we characterise the boundedness (and compactness) of Toeplitz operators $T_{{\it\mu}}$ between Fock spaces $F^{\infty }({\it\varphi})$ and $F^{p}({\it\varphi})$ with $0<p\leq \infty$ in terms of $t$-Berezin transforms and averaging functions of ${\it\mu}$. Our result extends recent work of Mengestie [‘On Toeplitz operators between Fock spaces’, Integral Equations Operator Theory78 (2014), 213–224] and others.

We define the quotient and complete NUOS-quotient map (NUOS stands for nonunital operator system) in the category of nonunital operator systems. We prove that the greatest reduced tensor product max0 is projective in some sense. Moreover, we define a pseudo unit in a nonunital operator system and give some necessary and sufficient conditions under which a nonunital operator system has an operator system structure.

The main goal of this paper is to give the answer to one of the main problems of the theory of nonautonomous superposition operators acting in the space of functions of bounded variation in the sense of Jordan. Namely, we prove that if the superposition operator maps the space $BV[0,1]$ into itself, then it is automatically locally bounded, provided its generator is a locally bounded function.

The main goal is to illustrate that the so-called indirect function of a cooperative game in characteristic function form is applicable to determine the nucleolus for a subclass of coalitional games called compromise stable transferable utility (TU) games. In accordance with the Fenchel–Moreau theory on conjugate functions, the indirect function is known as the dual representation of the characteristic function of the coalitional game. The key feature of a compromise stable TU game is the coincidence of its core with a box prescribed by certain upper and lower core bounds. For the purpose of the determination of the nucleolus, we benefit from the interrelationship between the indirect function and the prekernel of coalitional TU games. The class of compromise stable TU games contains the subclasses of clan games, big boss games and $1$- and $2$-convex $n$-person TU games. As an adjunct, this paper reports the indirect function of clan games for the purpose of determining their nucleolus.

We prove ${\it\epsilon}$-closeness of hypersurfaces to a sphere in Euclidean space under the assumption that the traceless second fundamental form is ${\it\delta}$-small compared to the mean curvature. We give the explicit dependence of ${\it\delta}$ on ${\it\epsilon}$ within the class of uniformly convex hypersurfaces with bounded volume.

In this paper, we consider signal recovery via $l_{1}$-analysis optimisation. The signals we consider are not sparse in an orthonormal basis or incoherent dictionary, but sparse or nearly sparse in terms of some tight frame $D$. The analysis in this paper is based on the restricted isometry property adapted to a tight frame $D$ (abbreviated as $D$-RIP), which is a natural extension of the standard restricted isometry property. Assuming that the measurement matrix $A\in \mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ satisfies $D$-RIP with constant ${\it\delta}_{tk}$ for integer $k$ and $t>1$, we show that the condition ${\it\delta}_{tk}<\sqrt{(t-1)/t}$ guarantees stable recovery of signals through $l_{1}$-analysis. This condition is sharp in the sense explained in the paper. The results improve those of Li and Lin [‘Compressed sensing with coherent tight frames via $l_{q}$-minimization for $0<q\leq 1$’, Preprint, 2011, arXiv:1105.3299] and Baker [‘A note on sparsification by frames’, Preprint, 2013, arXiv:1308.5249].

For every countable group $G$ we construct a compact path connected subspace $K$ of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ such that ${\it\pi}_{1}(K)\cong G$. Our construction is much simpler than the one found recently by Virk.

Exact upper and lower bounds on the difference between the arithmetic and geometric means are obtained. The inequalities providing these bounds may be viewed, respectively, as a reverse Jensen inequality and an improvement of the direct Jensen inequality, in the case when the convex function is the exponential.

For triangular arrays $\{X_{n,k}:1\leqslant k\leqslant n,n\geqslant 1\}$ of upper extended negatively dependent random variables weakly mean dominated by a random variable $X$ and sequences $\{b_{n}\}$ of positive constants, conditions are given to guarantee an almost sure finite upper bound to $\sum _{k=1}^{n}(X_{n,k}-\mathbb{E}X_{n,k})/\!\sqrt{b_{n}\,\text{Log}\,n}$, where $\text{Log}\,n:=\max \{1,\log n\}$, thus getting control over the limiting rate in terms of the prescribed sequence $\{b_{n}\}$ and permitting us to weaken or strengthen the assumptions on the random variables.
