For each even dimension greater than or equal to 8, an infinite family of 3-step nilpotent Lie algebras over ℂ is constructed. In dimension m, the family contains isomorphism classes parameterised locally by approximately m3/48 essential parameters.

One particular case is studied further to get some global information about the variety of all nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension 8. Using the results obtained here, and some known facts, it is shown that there is a component consisting of algebras not having minimal possible central dimensions.

In this article we give an explicit representation of p-adic Dedekind sums and their reciprocity laws by using p-adic measure theory. We then study the consequences of the p-adic reciprocity law for particular positive integer values in which case we can recover a reciprocity law for Dedekind sums attached to particular Dirichlet characters. This gives a proof different from that of Nagasaka.

Sufficient conditions are obtained for all solutions of a general scalar linear functional differential equation to be oscillatory. Our main theorem concerns some particular cases of a conjecture of Hunt and Yorke.

The catenary degree is an invariant that measures the distance between factorisations of elements within an atomic monoid. In this paper, we classify which finite subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ occur as the set of catenary degrees of a numerical monoid (that is, a co-finite, additive submonoid of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$). In particular, we show that, with one exception, every finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ that can possibly occur as the set of catenary degrees of some atomic monoid is actually achieved by a numerical monoid.

Let F(G) denote the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of the group G. Two groups G and H are said to have the same finite quotients if F(G) = F(H). We construct infinitely many nonisomorphic finitely presented metabelian groups with the same finite quotients, using modules over a suitably chosen ring. These groups also give an example of infinitely many nonisomorphic split extensions of a fixed finitely presented metabelian group by a fixed finite abelian group, all having the same finite quotients.

It is known that $\zeta (1+ it)\ll \mathop{(\log t)}\nolimits ^{2/ 3} $ when $t\gg 1$. This paper provides a new explicit estimate $\vert \zeta (1+ it)\vert \leq \frac{3}{4} \log t$, for $t\geq 3$. This gives the best upper bound on $\vert \zeta (1+ it)\vert $ for $t\leq 1{0}^{2\cdot 1{0}^{5} } $.

We give three identities involving multiple zeta values of height one and of maximal height: an explicit formula for the height-one multiple zeta values, a regularised sum formula and a sum formula for the multiple zeta values of maximal height.

It is shown that for arbitrary countable dense ssets A and B of the real line, there exists a transcendental entire function whose restriction to the real line is a real-valued strictly monotone increasing surjection taking A onto B The technique used is a modification of the procedure Maurer used to show that for countable dense subsets A and B of the plane, there exists a transcendental entire function whose restriction to A is a bijection from A to B.

Let A1, A2 be Banach algebras, A1 ⊗ A2 their algebraic tensor product over the complex field. If ‖ · ‖α is an algebra norm on A1 ⊗ A2 we write A1 ⊗αA2 for the ‖ · ‖α-completion of A1 ⊗ A2. In this note we study the existence of identities and approximate identities in A1 ⊗αA2 versus their existence in A1 and A2. Some of the results obtained are already known, but our method of proof appears new, though it is quite elementary.

In this paper we first obtain a basic formula for the conditional analytic Feynman integral of the first variation of a functional on Wiener space. We then apply this basic result to obtain several integration by parts formulas for conditional analytic Feynman integrals and conditional Fourier-Feynman transforms.

For a finite group $G$, define $l(G)=(\prod _{g\in G}o(g))^{1/|G|}/|G|$, where $o(g)$ denotes the order of $g\in G$. We prove that if $l(G)>l(A_{5}),l(G)>l(A_{4}),l(G)>l(S_{3}),l(G)>l(Q_{8})$ or $l(G)>l(C_{2}\times C_{2})$, then $G$ is solvable, supersolvable, nilpotent, abelian or cyclic, respectively.

It is shown that, for a semi-topological functor T: A → X, the category A is total, that is, the Yoneda embedding of A has a left adjoint, if X is total. In particular, monadic categories over Set (possibly without rank) are total, and full reflective subcategories of total categories are total.

In this paper we define polynomials on a locally compact Abelian group G and prove the equivalence of our definition with that of Domar. We explore the properties of polynomials and determine their spectra. We also characterise the primary ideals of certain Beurling algebras on the group of integers Z. This allows us to classify those elements of that have finite spectrum. If ϕ is a uniformly continuous function with bounded differences then there is a Beurling algebra naturally associated with ϕ. We give a condition on the spectrum of ϕ relative to this algebra which ensures that ϕ is bounded. Finally we give spectral conditions on a bounded function on ℝ that ensure that its indefinite integral is bounded.

Ky Fan type inequalities for means of two or more variables are obtained. Refinements and improvements of known inequalities are derived. Applications to symmetric elliptic integrals of the first and second kind are also included.

In this note sufficient conditions for non-compactness of composition operators on two different functional Hilbert spaces have been obtained.

In this paper, we establish a number of inequalities involving symmetric means and symmetric harmonic means. We then apply these new inequalities to obtain many geometric inequalities of isoperimetric type for plane polygons.

Banach space embeddings of the Orlicz space Lp + Lq and the Lorentz space Lp, q into the Lebesgue-Bochner space Lr(ls) are demonstrated for appropriate ranges of the parameters.

In 1977 Hartwig and Luh asked whether an element $a$ in a Dedekind-finite ring $R$ satisfying $aR= {a}^{2} R$ also satisfies $Ra= R{a}^{2} $. In this paper, we answer this question in the negative. We also prove that if $a$ is an element of a Dedekind-finite exchange ring $R$ and $aR= {a}^{2} R$, then $Ra= R{a}^{2} $. This gives an easier proof of Dischinger’s theorem that left strongly $\pi $-regular rings are right strongly $\pi $-regular, when it is already known that $R$ is an exchange ring.
