Following recent investigations of vanishing coefficients in infinite products, we show that such instances are very rare when the infinite product is among a family of theta-quotients of modulus five. We also prove that a general family of products of theta functions of modulus five can always be effectively 5-dissected.

This paper investigates self-small abelian groups of finite torsion-free rank. We obtain a new characterization of infinite self-small groups. In addition, self-small groups of torsion-free rank 1 and their finite direct sums are discussed.

The l-adic representations associated to prime dimensional type IV absolutely simple abelian varieties over number fields are studied. The image of such a representation was computed. The results coincide with the well-known conjectures of Mumford and Tate.

For every nonsingleton finite set A, we construct three families of partial clones on A that contain all permutations of A and are of continuum cardinality.

We present an algorithm for calculating the geometric intersection number of two multicurves on the $n$-punctured disk, taking as input their Dynnikov coordinates. The algorithm has complexity $O(m^{2}n^{4})$, where $m$ is the sum of the absolute values of the Dynnikov coordinates of the two multicurves. The main ingredient is an algorithm due to Cumplido for relaxing a multicurve.

We discuss the structure of some inverse semigroups and the associated C* algebras. In particular, we study the bicyclic semigroup and the free monogenic inverse semigroup, following earlier work of Conway, Duncan and Paterson. We then associate to each zero-one matrix A an inverse semigroup CA, and show that the C*-algebra OA of Cuntz and Krieger is closely related to the semigroup algebra C*(CA).

We show that the concepts of shadowing and (c, h−) inverse shadowing of circle homeomorphisms are equivalent.

In this article we examine the problem of when a left Kan extension of a finite-product-preserving functor is finite-product preserving. This extension property is of significance in the development of finitary universal algebra in a closed category, details of which will appear elsewher. We give a list of closed categories with the required extension property.

In this note we study the zeros of solutions of differential equations of the form u′′+pu=0. A criterion for oscillation is found, and some sharper forms of the Sturm comparison theorem are given.

For a group G, we define a graph $\Delta (G)$ by letting $G^{\scriptsize\#}=G\setminus {\{\,1\,\}} $ be the set of vertices and by drawing an edge between distinct elements $x,y\in G^{\scriptsize\#}$ if and only if the subgroup $\langle x,y\rangle $ is cyclic. Recall that a Z-group is a group where every Sylow subgroup is cyclic. In this short note, we investigate $\Delta (G)$ for a Z-group G.

We prove that the first order Riesz transforms associated to the Laguerre semigroup are weak-type (1, 1). We also present a counterexample showing that for the Riesz transforms of order three or higher the weak type (1, 1) estimate fails.

A subgroup H of a group G is pronormal in G if each of its conjugates $H^g$ in G is conjugate to it in the subgroup $\langle H,H^g\rangle $ ; a group is prohamiltonian if all of its nonabelian subgroups are pronormal. The aim of the paper is to show that a locally soluble group of (regular) cardinality in which all proper uncountable subgroups are prohamiltonian is prohamiltonian. In order to obtain this result, it is proved that the class of prohamiltonian groups is detectable from the behaviour of countable subgroups. Examples are exhibited to show that there are uncountable prohamiltonian groups that do not behave very well. Finally, it is shown that prohamiltonicity can sometimes be detected through the analysis of the finite homomorphic images of a group.

For a class of homogeneous Cantor sets, we find an explicit formula for their packing dimensions. We then turn our attention to the value of packing measures. The exact value of packing measure for homogeneous Cantor sets has not yet been calculated even though that of Hausdorff measures was evaluated by Qu, Rao and Su in (2001). We give a reasonable lower bound for the packing measures of homogeneous Cantor sets. Our results indicate that duality does not hold between Hausdorff and packing measures.

We prove that, in a finite soluble group, all of whose Sylow normalisers are super-soluble, the Fitting length is at most 2m + 2, where pm is the highest power of the smallest prime p dividing |G/Gs| here Gs is the supersoluble residual of G. The bound 2m + 2 is best possible. However under certain structural constraints on G/GS, typical of the small examples one makes by way of experimentation, the bound is sharply reduced. More precisely let p be the smallest, and r the largest, prime dividing the order of a group G in the class under consideration. If a Sylow p–subgroup of G/GS acts faithfully on every r-chief factor of G/GS, then G has Fitting length at most 3.

Sufficient conditions which are verifiable in a finite number of arithmetical steps are derived for the existence and global asymptotic stability of a feasible steady state in an integro-differential system modelling the dynamics of n competing species in a constant environment with delayed interspecific interactions. A novel method involving a nested sequence of “asymptotic” upper and lower bounds is developed.

We show how to modify any Bratteli diagram E for an AF-algebra A to obtain a Bratteli diagram KE for A whose graph algebra C*(KE) contains both A and C*(E) as full corners.

Motivated by Ramanujan’s continued fraction and the work of Richmond and Szekeres [‘The Taylor coefficients of certain infinite products’, Acta Sci. Math. (Szeged)40(3–4) (1978), 347–369], we investigate vanishing coefficients along arithmetic progressions in four quotients of infinite product expansions and obtain similar results. For example, $a_{1}(5n+4)=0$, where $a_{1}(n)$ is defined by

In this paper we give some new types of inequalities which can be regarded as discrete forms of the Wirtinger inequality and several new isoperimetric-type inequalities.

Multivariate versions of Mercer's Theorem and the usual expansions of the resolvent and Fredholm determinant are shown to hold for an n × n symmetric kernel N(x, y) with arbitrary domain in Rp under weakened continuity conditions. Further, the resolvent and determinant of N(x, y) − a(x)b(y) are given in terms of those of N(x, y).

A semigroup S with an involution * is called a special involution semigroup if and only if, for every finite nonempty subset T of S,

It is shown that a semigroup is inverse if and only if it is a special involution semigroup in which every element invariant under the involution is periodic. Other examples of special involution semigroups are discussed; these include free semigroups, totally ordered cancellative commutative semigroups and certain semigroups of matrices. Some properties of the semigroup algebras of special involution semigroups are also derived. In particular, it is shown that their real and complex semigroup algebras are semiprimitive.
