Following recent investigations of vanishing coefficients in infinite products, we show that such instances are very rare when the infinite product is among a family of theta-quotients of modulus five. We also prove that a general family of products of theta functions of modulus five can always be effectively 5-dissected.

A semigroup S with an involution * is called a special involution semigroup if and only if, for every finite nonempty subset T of S,

It is shown that a semigroup is inverse if and only if it is a special involution semigroup in which every element invariant under the involution is periodic. Other examples of special involution semigroups are discussed; these include free semigroups, totally ordered cancellative commutative semigroups and certain semigroups of matrices. Some properties of the semigroup algebras of special involution semigroups are also derived. In particular, it is shown that their real and complex semigroup algebras are semiprimitive.

We discuss the structure of some inverse semigroups and the associated C* algebras. In particular, we study the bicyclic semigroup and the free monogenic inverse semigroup, following earlier work of Conway, Duncan and Paterson. We then associate to each zero-one matrix A an inverse semigroup CA, and show that the C*-algebra OA of Cuntz and Krieger is closely related to the semigroup algebra C*(CA).

We prove that the first order Riesz transforms associated to the Laguerre semigroup are weak-type (1, 1). We also present a counterexample showing that for the Riesz transforms of order three or higher the weak type (1, 1) estimate fails.

We present an algorithm for calculating the geometric intersection number of two multicurves on the $n$-punctured disk, taking as input their Dynnikov coordinates. The algorithm has complexity $O(m^{2}n^{4})$, where $m$ is the sum of the absolute values of the Dynnikov coordinates of the two multicurves. The main ingredient is an algorithm due to Cumplido for relaxing a multicurve.

Motivated by Ramanujan’s continued fraction and the work of Richmond and Szekeres [‘The Taylor coefficients of certain infinite products’, Acta Sci. Math. (Szeged)40(3–4) (1978), 347–369], we investigate vanishing coefficients along arithmetic progressions in four quotients of infinite product expansions and obtain similar results. For example, $a_{1}(5n+4)=0$, where $a_{1}(n)$ is defined by

A subgroup H of a group G is pronormal in G if each of its conjugates $H^g$ in G is conjugate to it in the subgroup $\langle H,H^g\rangle $ ; a group is prohamiltonian if all of its nonabelian subgroups are pronormal. The aim of the paper is to show that a locally soluble group of (regular) cardinality in which all proper uncountable subgroups are prohamiltonian is prohamiltonian. In order to obtain this result, it is proved that the class of prohamiltonian groups is detectable from the behaviour of countable subgroups. Examples are exhibited to show that there are uncountable prohamiltonian groups that do not behave very well. Finally, it is shown that prohamiltonicity can sometimes be detected through the analysis of the finite homomorphic images of a group.

A permutation group is highly transitive if it is n–transitive for every positive integer n. A group G of order-preserving permutations of the rational line Q is highly order-transitive if for every α1 < … < αn and β1 < … < βn in Q there exists g ∈ G such that αig = βi, i = 1, …, n. The free group Fn(2 ≤ η ≤ אo) can be faithfully represented as a highly order-transitive group of order-preserving permutations of Q, and also (reproving a theorem of McDonough) as a highly transitive group on the natural numbers N. If G and H are nontrivial countable groups having faithful representations as groups of order-preserving permutations of Q, then their free product G * H has such a representation which in addition is highly order-transitive. If G and H are nontrivial finite or countable groups and if H has an element of infinite order, then G * H can be faithfully represented as a highly transitive group on N. Some of the representations of Fη on Q can be extended to faithful representations of the free lattice-ordered group Lη.

In this paper a new fixed point theorem for upper semicontinuous set-valued mappings with closed acyclic values is established in the setting of an abstract convex structure – called a locally G-convex space, which generalises usual convexity such as locally convex H-spaces, locally convex spaces (locally H-convex spaces), hyperconvex metric spaces and locally convex topological spaces. Our fixed point theorem includes corresponding Fan-Glicksberg type fixed point theorems in locally convex H-spaces, locally convex spaces, hyperconvex metric space and locally convex spaces in the existing literature as special cases.

The authors provide precise lower bounds for the completely bounded norm of the operator Ta,b: ß(H) → ß(H) defined by Ta,b (x) = axb + bxa and the injective norm of the corresponding tensor. Further, they compute the norm of the operator x ↦ a*xb + b*xa acting on the space of all conjugate-linear operators on H.

Slant curves are introduced in three-dimensional warped products with Euclidean factors. These curves are characterised by the scalar product between the normal at the curve and the vertical vector field, and an important feature is that the case of constant Frenet curvatures implies a proper mean curvature vector field. A Lancret invariant is obtained and the Legendre curves are analysed as a particular case. An example of a slant curve is given for the exponential warping function; our example illustrates a proper (that is, not reducible to the two-dimensional) case of the Lancret theorem of three-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. We point out an eventuality relationship with the geometry of relativistic models.

The oscillatory character of the solutions of a differential equation with retarded arguments, relevant to an industrial problem, is investigated. It is also proved that one can maintain the oscillatory properties of this equation under proper conditions, if a forcing term is added to it. The results obtained extend already known results on the subject.

It is a well-known result that if a nonconstant meromorphic function $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}f$ on $\mathbb{C}$ and its $l$th derivative $f^{(l)}$ have no zeros for some $l\geq 2$, then $f$ is of the form $f(z)=\exp (Az+B)$ or $f(z)=(Az+B)^{-n}$ for some constants $A$, $B$. We extend this result to meromorphic functions of several variables, by first extending the classic Tumura–Clunie theorem for meromorphic functions of one complex variable to that of meromorphic functions of several complex variables using Nevanlinna theory.

Let φ and ψ be holomorphic self-maps of the unit polydisc Un in the n-dimensional complex space, and denote by Cφ and Cψ the induced composition operators. This paper gives some simple estimates of the essential norm for the difference of composition operators Cφ−Cψ from Bloch space to bounded holomorphic function space in the unit polydisc. The compactness of the difference is also characterized.

In this paper we determine the metric dimension of $n$-dimensional metric $(X,G)$-manifolds. This category includes all Euclidean, hyperbolic and spherical manifolds as special cases.

We show Exel’s tight representation of an inverse semigroup can be described in terms of joins and covers in the natural partial order. Using this, we show that the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of a finitely aligned category of paths, developed by Spielberg, is the tight ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of a natural inverse semigroup. This includes as a special case finitely aligned higher-rank graphs: that is, for such a higher-rank graph $\Lambda $, the tight ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of the inverse semigroup associated to $\Lambda $ is the same as the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of $\Lambda $.

The existence of travelling wave solutions to equations of a viscous, heat-conducting combustible fluid is proved. The reactions are assumed to be one step exothermic reactions with a natural discontinuous reaction rate function. The problem is studied for a general gas. Instead of assuming the ideal gas conditions we consider a general thermodynamics which is described by a fairly mild set of hypotheses. The existence proof of travelling waves for Chapman-Jouguet detonation reduces to finding specific heteroclinic orbits of a discontinuous system of ordinary differential equations: these heteroclinic orbits connect a rest point corresponding to unburnt state to that of the burnt state. The existence proof for heteroclinic orbits corresponding to Chapman-Jouguet detonation waves is carried out by some general topological arguments in ordinary differential equations theory.

A new result is obtained for the oscillation of second order linear ordinary differential equations with alternating coefficients. This oscillation result extends a recent oscillation criterion due to Kamenev [.Mat. Zametki 23 (1978), 249–251].
