The Dunkl transform ${\mathcal{F}}_{k}$ is a generalisation of the usual Fourier transform to an integral transform invariant under a finite reflection group. The goal of this paper is to prove a strong uncertainty principle for orthonormal bases in the Dunkl setting which states that the product of generalised dispersions cannot be bounded for an orthonormal basis. Moreover, we obtain a quantitative version of Shapiro’s uncertainty principle on the time–frequency concentration of orthonormal sequences and show, in particular, that if the elements of an orthonormal sequence and their Dunkl transforms have uniformly bounded dispersions then the sequence is finite.

We exhibit a 3-generator metabelian group which is not finitely related but has a trivial multiplicator.

1. The purpose of this note is to establish the exitense of a finitely generated group which is not finitely related, but whose multiplecator is finitely generated. This settles negatively a question whichb has been open for a few years (it was first brought to my attention by Michel Kervaire and Joan Landman Dyer in 1964, but I believe it is somewhat older). The group is given in the follwing theorem.

The Splitting Theorem says that any given Hamel basis for a (Hausdorff) barrelled space E determines topologically complementary subspaces Ec and ED, and that Ec is flat, that is, contains no proper dense subspace. By use of this device it was shown that if E is non-flat it must contain a dense subspace of codimension at least ℵ0; here we maximally increase the estimate to ℵ1 under the assumption that the dominating cardinal ∂ equals ℵ1 [strictly weaker than the Continuum Hypothesis (CH)]. A related assumption strictly weaker than the Generalised CH allows us to prove that ED is fit, that is, contains a dense subspace whose codimension in ED is dim (ED), the largest imaginable. Thus the two components are extreme opposites, and E itself is fit if and only if dim (ED) ≥ dim (Ec), in which case there is a choice of basis for which ED = E. Morover, E is non-flat (if and) only if the codimension of E′ is at least in E*. These results ensure latitude in the search for certain subspaces of E* transverse to E′, as in the barrelled countable enlargement (BCE) problem, and show that every non-flat GM-space has a BCE.

We study sums involving multiplicative functions that take values over a nonhomogenous Beatty sequence. We then apply our result in a few special cases to obtain asymptotic formulas for quantities such as the number of integers in a Beatty sequence that are representable as a sum of two squares up to a given magnitude.

Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Banach space E and let S, T be nonexpansive mappings of C into itself. In this paper, we consider the following iteration procedure of Mann's type for approximating common fixed points of two mappings S and T:

where {αn is a sequence in [0,1]. Using some ideas in the nonlinear ergodic theory, we prove that the iterates converge weakly to a common fixed point of the nonexpansive mappings T and S in a uniformly convex Banach space which satisfies Opial's condition or whose norm is Fréchet differentiable.

For a periodic group G, denote by ω(G) the set of orders of elements in G. We prove that if ω(G) is a proper subset of the set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} then either G is locally finite or G contains a nilpotent normal subgroup N such that G/N is a 5-group.

In 1976, Gross posed the question “can one find two (or possibly even one) finite sets Sj (j = 1, 2) such that any two entire functions f and g satisfying Ef(Sj) = Eg(Sj) for j = 1,2 must be identical?”, where Ef(Sj) stands for the inverse image of Sj under f. In this paper, we show that there exists a finite set S with 11 elements such that for any two non-constant meromorphic functions f and g the conditions Ef(S) = Eg(S) and Ef({∞}) = Eg({∞}) imply f ≡ g. As a special case this also answers the question posed by Gross.

Let $G$ be a finite group. We show that the order of the subgroup generated by coprime ${\gamma }_{k} $-commutators (respectively, ${\delta }_{k} $-commutators) is bounded in terms of the size of the set of coprime ${\gamma }_{k} $-commutators (respectively, ${\delta }_{k} $-commutators). This is in parallel with the classical theorem due to Turner-Smith that the words ${\gamma }_{k} $ and ${\delta }_{k} $ are concise.

In this note it is shown that a result of Champion and De Pascale [‘Asymptotic behavior of nonlinear eigenvalue problems involving p-Laplacian type operators’, Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 137 (2007), 1179–1195] implies that the variational eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian are continuous with respect to p.

The aim of this note is to present in the reflexive Banach space setting a natural and simple proof of the formula of the approximate subdifferential of a composite function.

A uniform space is trans-separable if every uniform cover has a countable subcover. We show that a uniform space is trans-separable if it contains a suitable family of precompact sets. Applying this result to locally convex spaces, we are able to deduce that the precompact subsets of a wide class of spaces are metrisable. The proof of our main Theorem is based on a cardinality argument, and is reminiscent of the classical Bolzano-Weierstrass Theorem.

We have constructed all simple Lie superalgebras from some triple systems. In particular, we shall discuss simple Lie superalgebras of P(n), Q(n) and Cartan types W(n), S(n), H(n) in this article.

Let G be a finite group. We prove that if the set of p-regular conjugacy class sizes of G has exactly two elements, then G has Abelian p-complement or G=PQ×A, with P∈Sylp(G), Q∈Sylq(G) and A Abelian.

It is well-known that a boolean ring is commutative. In this note we show that a distributively generated boolean near-ring is multiplicatively commutative, and therefore a ring. This is accomplished by using subdirect sum representations of near-rings.

A generalised dual to a non-differentiable programming problem is given and duality established under general convexity and invexity conditions. A second order dual is also given and duality theorems proved under generalised second order invexity condition.

We derive the formula in the title and deduce some consequences. For example we show that the identity map from any compact manifold to itself is always stable as an exponentially harmonic map. This is in sharp contrast to the harmonic or p-harmonic cases where many such identity maps are unstable. We also prove that an isometric and totally geodesic immersion of Sm into Sn is an unstable exponentially harmonic map if m ≠ n and is a stable exponentially harmonic map if m = n.

Let q be a prime power, Fq a field with q elements, f ∈ Fq[x] a polynomial of degree n ≥ 1, V(f) = #f(Fq) the number of different values f(α) of f, with α ∈ Fq, and p = q – V(f). It is shown that either ρ = 0 or 4n4 > q or 2pn > q. Hence, if q is “large” and f is not a permutation polynomial, then either n or ρ is “large”.

An associative ring is called strongly right (left) bounded if every nonzero right (left) ideal contains a nonzero ideal. We prove that if R is a strongly right bounded finite ring with unity and the order |R| of R has no factors of the form p5, then R is strongly left bounded. This answers a question of Birkenmeier and Tucci.

The method of nondiscrete mathematical induction is used to find sharp error bounds for Newton's method. We assume only that the operator has Hölder continuous derivatives. In the case when the Fréchet-derivative of the operator satisfies a Lipschitz condition, our results reduce to the ones obtained by Ptak and Potra in 1972.

Let 〈𝒫〉⊂N be a multiplicative subsemigroup of the natural numbers N={1,2,3,…} generated by an arbitrary set 𝒫 of primes (finite or infinite). We give an elementary proof that the partial sums ∑ n∈〈𝒫〉:n≤x(μ(n))/n are bounded in magnitude by 1. With the aid of the prime number theorem, we also show that these sums converge to ∏ p∈𝒫(1−(1/p)) (the case where 𝒫 is all the primes is a well-known observation of Landau). Interestingly, this convergence holds even in the presence of nontrivial zeros and poles of the associated zeta function ζ𝒫(s)≔∏ p∈𝒫(1−(1/ps))−1 on the line {Re(s)=1}. As equivalent forms of the first inequality, we have ∣∑ n≤x:(n,P)=1(μ(n))/n∣≤1, ∣∑ n∣N:n≤x(μ(n))/n∣≤1, and ∣∑ n≤x(μ(mn))/n∣≤1 for all m,x,N,P≥1.
