We discuss the problem of constructing elements of multiplicative high order in finite fields of large degree over their prime field. We obtain such elements by evaluating rational functions on elliptic curves, at points whose order is small with respect to their degree. We discuss several special cases, including an old construction of Wiedemann, giving the first nontrivial estimate for the order of the elements in this construction.

Some new integral conditions characterising the embedding ∧p(v) ↪ Γq(w), 0 < p, q ≤ ∞ are presented, including proofs also for the cases (i) p = ∞, 0 < q < ∞, (ii) q = ∞, I < p < ∞ and (iii) p = q = ∞. Only one condition is necessary for each case which means that our conditions are different from and simpler than other corresponding conditions in the literature. We even prove our results in a more general frame namely when the space Γq(w) is replaced by the more general space . In our proof we use a technique of discretisation and anti-discretisation developed by A. Gogatishvili and L. Pick, where they considered the opposite embedding.

To each pseudovariety of Abelian groups residually containing the integers, there is naturally associated a profinite topology on any finite rank free Abelian group. We show in this paper that if the pseudovariety in question has a decidable membership problem, then one can effectively compute membership in the closure of a subgroup and, more generally, in the closure of a rational subset of such a free Abelian group. Several applications to monoid kernels and finite monoid theory are discussed.

This work is concerned with the forced convection of heat in a circular tube. The fluid flow is assumed to be laminar Poiseuille flow, and the physical parameters; viscosity, density, conductivity; are assumed to be independent of temperature changes. Viscous dissipation terms are also ignored, and there are no heat sources in the fluid. The problem is treated for the case of a step change in the wall temperature, and the eigenvalues have been obtained as an expansion in powers of the Péclet number for the smaller values, and in an asymptotic form for the larger values. The temperature distribution in the fluid in the neighbourhood of the temperature jump has been calculated for two values of the Péclet number, as have the Nusselt numbers.

A homomorphism f: R → T of (commutative) rings is said to be universally incomparable in case each base change R → S induces an incomparable map S → S⊗RT. The most natural examples of universally incomparable homomorphisms are the integral maps and radiciel maps. It is proved that a homomorphism f: R → T is universally incomparable if and only if f is an incomparable map which induces algebraic field extensions of fibres, k(f-1(Q))→k(Q), for each prime ideal Q of T. In several cases (f algebra-finite, T generated as R-algebra by primitive elements, T an overring of a one-dimensional Noetherian domain R), each universally incomparable map is shown to factor as a composite of an integral map and a special kind of radiciel.

We show that each abelian l–group G is a large l–subgroup of a minimal vector lattice V and if G is archimedean then V is unique, in fact, V is the l–subspace of (Gd)^ that is generated by G, where Gd is the divisible hull of G and (Gd)^ is the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of Gd. If G is non-archimedean then V need not be unique, even if G is totally ordered.

We exhibit the double $q$-shuffle structure for the $q$MZVs introduced by Ohno et al. [‘Cyclic $q$-MZSV sum’, J. Number Theory132 (2012), 144–155].

The object of this paper is to study a stochastic discrete system, including an operator T, of the form

as a perturbation of the linear stochastic discrete system

where ω ∈ Ω, the supporting set of probability measure space (Ω, A, P) and n ∈ N, the set of nonnegative integers. We are concerned vith the existence, uniqueness, boundedness, and asymptotic behavior of random solutions of the above equation.

A new deformation lemma for functions satisfying the Palais-Smale condition on a real Banach space is obtained. This is used to deduce some critical point theorems which are extensions of some well known results.

In this paper, we discuss the H1L-boundedness of commutators of Riesz transforms associated with the Schrödinger operator L=−△+V, where H1L(Rn) is the Hardy space associated with L. We assume that V (x) is a nonzero, nonnegative potential which belongs to Bq for some q>n/2. Let T1=V (x)(−△+V )−1, T2=V1/2(−△+V )−1/2 and T3 =∇(−△+V )−1/2. We prove that, for b∈BMO (Rn) , the commutator [b,T3 ] is not bounded from H1L(Rn) to L1 (Rn) as T3 itself. As an alternative, we obtain that [b,Ti ] , ( i=1,2,3 ) are of (H1L,L1weak) -boundedness.

Let g denote a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra over ℂ containing an Abelian ideal a of codimension 1, with z ∈ g/a. We give a combinatorial description of the Betti numbers of g in terms of the Jordan decomposition induced by ad(z)|a. As an application we prove that the filiform-nilpotent Lie algebras arising in the case t = 1 have unimodal Betti numbers.

The conjugacy classes in the finite-dimensional projective full linear, special linear and projective special linear groups over an arbitrary commutative field are determined. The results over a finite field are applied to certain enumerative problems.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of exterior space and give a full embedding of the category P of spaces and proper maps into the category E of exterior spaces. We show that the category E admits the structure of a closed simplicial model category. This technique solves the problem of using homotopy constructions available in the localised category HoE and in the “homotopy category” π0E, which can not be developed in the proper homotopy category.

On the other hand, for compact metrisable spaces we have formulated sets of shape morphisms, discrete shape morphisms and strong shape morphisms in terms of sets of exterior homotopy classes and for the case of finite covering dimension in terms of homomorphism sets in the localised category.

As applications, we give a new version of the Whitehead Theorem for proper homotopy and an exact sequence that generalises Quigley's exact sequence and contains the shape version of Edwards-Hastings' Comparison Theorem.

In the paper “Some remarks on approximative compactness”, Rev. Roumaine Math. Pures Appl. 9 (1964), Ivan Singer proved that if K is an approximatively compact Chebyshev set in a metric space, then the metric projection onto K is continuous. The object of this paper is to show that though, in general, the continuity of the metric projection supported by a Chebyshev set does not imply that the set is approximatively compact, it is indeed so in a large class of Banach spaces, including the locally uniformly convex spaces. It is also proved that in such a space X the metric projection onto a Chebyshev set is continuous on a set dense in X.

We show that each archimedean lattice-ordered group is contained in a unique (up to isomorphism) minimal archimedean vector lattice. This improves a result of Paul F. Conrad appearing previously in this Bulletin. Moreover, we show that this relationship between archimedean lattice-ordered groups and archimedean vector lattices is functorial.

This work generalises the short resolution given by Pisón Casares [‘The short resolution of a lattice ideal’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.131(4) (2003), 1081–1091] to any affine semigroup. We give a characterisation of Apéry sets which provides a simple way to compute Apéry sets of affine semigroups and Frobenius numbers of numerical semigroups. We also exhibit a new characterisation of the Cohen–Macaulay property for simplicial affine semigroups.

Strong solvability and uniqueness in the Sobolev space W2, q(Ω), q > n, are proved for the oblique derivative problem

assuming the coefficients of the quasilinear elliptic operator to be Carathéodory functions, aij ∈ VMO∩L∞ with respect to x, and b to grow at most quadratically with respect to the gradient.

In this paper, we establish some estimates for the distance between adjacent zeros of the solutions of the first order delay differential equation

and the first order advanced differential equation

where P ∈ C([t0, ∞), [0, ∞)) and τ ∈ R+. Our results improve recent results in the literature.

This paper presents an extension of Banach's contraction mapping principle to Hausdorff spaces, in fact to the larger class of topological spaces in which convergent sequences have unique limits. This is achieved by considering topologies on X generated by families of quasi-pseudo-metrics on X. An extension of the concept of Cauchy sequence to this non-metric setting is given.

Suppose that A is a finite direct product of commutative rings. We show from first principles that a Gröbner basis for an ideal of A[x1,…,xn] can be easily obtained by ‘joining’ Gröbner bases of the projected ideals with coefficients in the factors of A (which can themselves be obtained in parallel). Similarly for strong Gröbner bases. This gives an elementary method of constructing a (strong) Gröbner basis when the Chinese Remainder Theorem applies to the coefficient ring and we know how to compute (strong) Gröbner bases in each factor.
