The rolling of a ball on a horizontal deformable surface was investigated under the assumptions that the ball was a rigid sphere and the surface was elastic. Finite strain theory was used to develop theoretical results which were found to match observations well in cases where the ball and surface involved were such as to ensure no slipping at the region of contact, including a lawn bowl rolling on a grass rink and a billiard ball rolling on carpet. The theory did not match well the behaviour of a golf ball on a grass green because the ball was too light to enforce the no-slipping condition.

We discuss some propositions of Holmes and Manning relating to the evolution of price in a cobweb market approaching equilibrium. We find in particular that the detailed behaviour of the linear model is quite typical of nonlinear cobweb models.

The main result of this paper is that the oscillation and nonoscillation properties of a nonlinear impulsive delay differential equation are equivalent respectively to the oscillation and nonoscillation of a corresponding nonlinear delay differential equation without impulse effects. An explicit necessary and sufficient condition for the oscillation of a nonlinear impulsive delay differential equation is obtained.

In this paper we introduce an impulsive control model of a rumour process. The spreaders are classified as subscriber spreaders, who receive an initial broadcast of a rumour and start spreading it, and nonsubscriber spreaders who change from being an ignorant to being a spreader after encountering a spreader. There are two consecutive broadcasts. The first starts the rumour process. The objective is to time the second broadcast so that the final proportion of ignorants is minimised. The second broadcast reactivates as spreaders either the subscriber stiflers (Scenario 1) or all individuals who have been spreaders (Scenario 2). It is shown that with either scenario the optimal time for the second broadcast is always when the proportion of spreaders drops to zero.

Linear multiplicative programs are an important class of nonconvex optimisation problems that are currently the subject of considerable research as regards the development of computational algorithms. In this paper, we show that mathematical programs of this nature are, in fact, a special case of more general signomial programming, which in turn implies that research on this latter problem may be valuable in analysing and solving linear multiplicative programs. In particular, we use signomial programming duality theory to establish a dual program for a nonconvex linear multiplicative program. An interpretation of the dual variables is given.

We consider a family of two-point quadrature formulae, using some Euler-type identities. A number of inequalities, for functions whose derivatives are either functions of bounded variation, Lipschitzian functions or R-integrable functions, are proved.

Gamma-Weibull variates with five parameters are defined by multiplication of gamma and Weibull densities and renormalising. Sums of independent such variates are distributed as combinations of products of gammas and confluent hypergeometric functions and are explicitly determined. Sums of independent non-identical Weibulls arise as a special case. These variates can be used to model moderately extreme scenarios between gamma and Weibull that occur in many natural applications. All results are exact.

In a classical paper, E. R. Love considered a certain function defined by a singular integral which is harmonic outside a circular disk. Love's objective was to derive a simple integral equation whose solution leads to a useful formula for the capacitance of the condenser consisting of two parallel circular plates. We close a gap in Love's derivation by finding a new nonsingular representation of Love's singular integral which permits one to draw the required conclusions about its boundary values and thereby establishes the correctness of Love's expression for the capacitance.

The existence of stationary solutions to the MHD equations in three-dimensional bounded domains will be proved. At the same time if the assumption of smallness is made on external forces, uniqueness of the stationary solutions can be guaranteed and it can be shown that any Lr (r > 3) global bounded non-stationary solution to the MHD equations approaches the stationary solution under both L2 and Lr norms exponentially as time goes to infinity.

This paper deals with the existence, uniqueness and qualitative properties of nonnegative and nontrivial solutions of a spatially heterogeneous Lotka-Volterra competition model with nonlinear diffusion. We give conditions in terms of the coefficients involved in the setting of the problem which assure the existence of nonnegative solutions as well as the uniqueness of a positive solution. In order to obtain these results we employ monotonicity methods, singular spectral theory and a fixed point index.

We extend an investigation into the static and dynamic multiplicity exhibited by the reaction of a fuel/air mixture in a continuously stirred tank reactor by considering the effect of adding a chemically inert species to the reaction mixture. The primary bifurcation parameter is taken to be the fuel fraction as this is the most important case from the perspective of fire-retardancy. We show how the addition of the inert species progressively changes the steady-state diagrams and flammability limits. We also briefly outline how heat-sink additives can be incorporated into our scheme.

This paper presents a two-step formulation for the dynamic analysis of generalised planar linkages. First, a rigid body is replaced by a dynamically equivalent constrained system of particles and Newton's second law is used to study the motion of the particles without introducing any rotational coordinates. The translational motion of the constrained particles represents the general motion of the rigid body both translationally and rotationally. The simplicity and the absence of any rotational coordinates from the final form of the equations of motion are considered the main advantages of this formulation. A velocity transformation is then used to transform the equations of motion to a reduced set in terms of selected relative joint variables. For an open-chain, this process automatically eliminates all of the non-working constraint forces and leads to efficient integration of the equations of motion. For a closed-chain, suitable joints should be cut and some cut-joint constraint equations should be included. An example of a closed-chain is used to demonstrate the generality and efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper deals with the combined bioeconomic harvesting of two competing fish species, each of which obeys the Gompertz law of growth. The catch-rate functions are chosen so as to reflect saturation effects with respect to stock abundance as well as harvesting effort. The stability of the dynamical system is discussed and the existence of a bionomic equilibrium is examined. The optimal harvest policy is studied with the help of Pontryagin's maimum principle. The results are illustrated with the help of a numerical example.

Modified versions of the Euler midpoint formula are given for functions whose derivatives are either functions of bounded variation, Lipschitzian functions or functions in Lp-spaces. The results are applied to quadrature formulae.

Wavelet systems with a maximum number of balanced vanishing moments are known to be extremely useful in a variety of applications such as image and video compression. Tian and Wells recently created a family of such wavelet systems, called the biorthogonal Coifman wavelets, which have proved valuable in both mathematics and applications. The purpose of this work is to establish along with direct proofs a very neat extension of Tian and Wells' family of biorthogonal Coifman wavelets by recovering other “missing” members of the biorthogonal Coifman wavelet systems.

A delayed predator-prey system with Holling type III functional response is investigated. It is proved that the system is uniformly persistent under some appropriate conditions. By means of suitable Lyapunov functionals, sufficient conditions are derived for the local and global asymptotic stability of a positive equilibrium of the system. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the feasibility of our main results.

We prove several growth theorems for solutions of certain nonlinear second-order difference equations.
