1. Carcass measurement and dissection data from 250 pigs reared at the stations of the National Pig Progeny Testing Board have been analysed to study the value of the carcass measurements in predicting the percentage lean in the carcass.

2. Differences between sexes in the carcass characteristics were generally larger than those between breeds. Gilts had a higher percentage of lean meat than the hogs, with larger eye muscle dimensions and smaller measurements of backfat thickness.

3. For pigs of the same breed and sex, the best predictions of leanness possible without cutting the carcass were derived from measurements of shoulder and minimum loin backfat (see Figure 1). Mid-backfat measurements improved the accuracy of prediction, but length and depth of carcass did not. The residual standard error in percentage lean at constant shoulder and minimum loin backfat was 2·66% of side weight overall but this was reduced to 2·28% by adjustments for breed and sex.

4. Measurements made after cutting the carcass at the last rib gave more accurate predictions of percentage lean than did the split carcass measurements. The residual standard error in percentage lean at constant B, C and K (see Figure 2) was 1·97 % of side weight overall, reduced to 1·88 % by adjustments for breed and sex.

5. The implications of these relationships in carcass grading and carcass evaluation generally are discussed.

The effect of extensive feeding, confinement and diet supplementation with a-tocopheryl acetate (100 mg/kg) on the fatty acid composition and tocopherol concentration of microsome extracts and their susceptibility to oxidation was studied in Iberian pigs. The diet of pigs raised extensively was mostly composed of acorn and grass. The a-tocopherol contents of acorn and grass were 20 and 171 mg/kg dry matter, respectively. Microsomal fatty acid composition showed no differences among groups. Pigs feeding extensively had a higher concentration of a-tocopherol in muscle and microsomes than pigs given mixed diet with the basal level of a-tocopheryl acetate (P < 0·05) but lower values than pigs given supplementary levels (100 mg/kg) (P < 0·05). Microsomal fractions from pigs given mixed diet with a basal level of a-tocopheryl acetate were significantly more susceptible to iron-induced lipid oxidation than extract from pigs given diets containing a supplementary level (P < 0·05). Microsomal extracts from pigs feeding extensively had the lowest oxidation rate (P < 0·05), suggesting that other dietary constituents may play a role in the stabilization of microsomal lipids.

The present study addresses the questions whether on-farm use of local anaesthesia with lidocaine leads to a reduction in pain responses during castration, and whether the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug meloxicam improves technical performance after castration of piglets. Five treatments were included in the study: (1) castration without anaesthesia or analgesia (CAST), (2) castration after local anaesthesia with lidocaine (LIDO), (3) castration after administration of meloxicam (MELO), (4) castration after lidocaine and meloxicam (L + M) and (5) sham castration (SHAM). To reduce litter influences, each treatment was present in each of the 32 litters (n = 32 per treatment). During castration, vocalizations were recorded continuously. Blood samples were collected 15 min before and 20 min after castration for determination of plasma levels of total cortisol, glucose, lactate and creatine kinase (CK). Mortality was registered and piglets were weighed several times to calculate growth. Several aspects of vocalizations during castration showed consistent and significantly different levels in CAST compared with LIDO, L + M and SHAM. CAST piglets squealed longer, louder and higher. Vocalizations of MELO piglets most resembled those of CAST. An increase in cortisol was seen in all treatments. However, in SHAM piglets this increase was significantly lower than in the other treatments. LIDO piglets showed a significantly smaller increase in plasma cortisol levels compared with CAST and MELO. L + M piglets differed significantly only from the SHAM group. Lactate levels differed significantly between LIDO and MELO, the level in LIDO being decreased after castration. In the other treatments an increase was measured. No treatment effects were found in plasma glucose and CK levels, nor in growth and mortality of the piglets. In conclusion, on the basis of vocalizations and plasma cortisol, local anaesthesia with lidocaine reduces pain responses in piglets during castration. A positive effect of meloxicam on technical performance was not found.

Compared with small groups, housing in large groups offers the pig more total available space, resulting potentially in an increased degree of control over its (micro) environment. For the producer, large groups require fewer pen divisions and offer more possibilities for the sharing of resources such as feeders and drinkers. However, whilst large groups may offer benefits to higher ranking animals in the group, there may be serious disadvantages for those further down the social hierarchy, who also need to compete for access to resources. This study investigated the interactive effects on welfare of food availability (one single space hopper per 20 or per 10 pigs) and group size (20, 40 or 80 pigs per pen), at constant stocking density (0·55 m2 per pig) in part-slatted pens. Groups provided with two feeding spaces per 20 pigs were less active than groups with one feeding space per 20 pigs. The number of aggressive interactions per pig at the food trough was not affected by group size but decreased with number of feeder spaces per 20 pigs. The number of skin lesions increased with group size. Average daily gain in the first half of the finishing period was negatively influenced by group size and positively by number of feeding spaces. No effect on weight gain was found subsequently. Within-group variation in growth was not affected by group size or number of feeder spaces. No differences between treatments were found in the number of pigs removed for health reasons. Interactive effects of the two treatments were found on some behaviours but not on any of the performance variables measured. It is concluded that, from a welfare point of view, the number of pigs per feeder space should be lower than 20, although performance levels appear acceptable at 20 pigs per feeder. Further research will have to identify whether the effects of group size on general aggression is common to all finishing pig systems, or whether the presence of straw can serve as a mitigating factor.

In rabbits, the bacterial and archaeal community of caecal ecosystem is composed mostly of species not yet described and very specific to that species. In mammals, the digestive ecosystem plays important physiological roles: hydrolysis and fermentation of nutrients, immune system regulation, angiogenesis, gut development and acting as a barrier against pathogens. Understanding the functioning of the digestive ecosystem and how to control its functional and specific diversity is a priority, as this could provide new strategies to improve the resistance of the young rabbit to digestive disorders and improve feed efficiency. This review first recalls some facts about the specificity of rabbit digestive microbiota composition in the main fermentation compartment, and its variability with some new insights based on recent molecular approaches. The main functions of the digestive microbiota will then be explained. Finally, some possible ways to control rabbit caecal microbiota will be proposed and a suitable timing for action will be defined.

Two trials were undertaken to investigate the effects of treating seasonally anoestrous ewes with melatonin implants on date of first oestrus and other aspects of reproductive performance.

Trial 1 involved a total of 368 Mule ewes and 79 Scottish Blackface ewes on five farms, approximately half of which were treated with a single subcutaneous implant of melatonin (Regulin®), containing 18 mg melatonin, between 23 July and 6 August 1986 and the remainder acted as untreated controls. Treatment had no significant effect on the date of first oestrus or conception rate in Mule ewes, although it increased the number of Scottish Blackface ewes mating (92% v. 73%) and the number of mated ewes conceiving (69% v. 54%) in a 5-week mating period, resulting in significantly more treated ewes lambing (63% v. 37%; P < 0·01). Litter size was higher in 4/5 flocks, although this only reached statistical significance in one Mule flock and the Scottish Blackface flock.

A total of 2116 ewes from 17 commercial flocks were used in trial 2, approximately half of which were Suffolk/Suffolk-cross ewes and the remainder Mule/Mule-cross ewes. Implantation with melatonin occurred between 22 June and 24 July 1987. Flocks with over 100 ewes were divided into three equal-sized groups and treated with either 18 mg melatonin (one implant of Regulin, 36 mg melatonin (two implants of Regulin given at the same time) or acted as untreated controls. Flocks with less than 100 ewes contained only the 18 mg melatonin and untreated control groups. Treatment with melatonin significantly advanced the date of first oestrus in most flocks of both breeds (P < 0·05) but the magnitude of this effect was variable. Significant (P < 0·05 at least) increases in ‘potential’ (from scanning) mean litter size (+0·13 to +0·18) and actual mean litter size (+0·11 to +0·14) resulting from treatment with melatonin were apparent in ewes of both breeds when the data were pooled across all flocks, but only in 4/17 of the individual flocks.

These results indicate that treatment with melatonin implants may be a simple and effective way of advancing the breeding season and enhancing litter size of early lambing flocks under commercial farming conditions in the United Kingdom, but treatment must be given >60 days before the start of the natural breeding season for benefits in date of first oestrus to be manifest.

Machine vision-based monitoring of pig lying behaviour is a fast and non-intrusive approach that could be used to improve animal health and welfare. Four pens with 22 pigs in each were selected at a commercial pig farm and monitored for 15 days using top view cameras. Three thermal categories were selected relative to room setpoint temperature. An image processing technique based on Delaunay triangulation (DT) was utilized. Different lying patterns (close, normal and far) were defined regarding the perimeter of each DT triangle and the percentages of each lying pattern were obtained in each thermal category. A method using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network, to automatically classify group lying behaviour of pigs into three thermal categories, was developed and tested for its feasibility. The DT features (mean value of perimeters, maximum and minimum length of sides of triangles) were calculated as inputs for the MLP classifier. The network was trained, validated and tested and the results revealed that MLP could classify lying features into the three thermal categories with high overall accuracy (95.6%). The technique indicates that a combination of image processing, MLP classification and mathematical modelling can be used as a precise method for quantifying pig lying behaviour in welfare investigations.

The objective of this study was to estimate the economic impact of subclinical ketosis (SCK) in dairy cows. This metabolic disorder occurs in the period around calving and is associated with an increased risk of other diseases. Therefore, SCK affects farm productivity and profitability. Estimating the economic impact of SCK may make farmers more aware of this problem, and can improve their decision-making regarding interventions to reduce SCK. We developed a dynamic stochastic simulation model that enables estimating the economic impact of SCK and related diseases (i.e. mastitis, metritis, displaced abomasum, lameness and clinical ketosis) occurring during the first 30 days after calving. This model, which was applied to a typical Dutch dairy herd, groups cows according to their parity (1 to 5+), and simulates the dynamics of SCK and related diseases, and milk production per cow during one lactation. The economic impact of SCK and related diseases resulted from a reduced milk production, discarded milk, treatment costs, costs from a prolonged calving interval and removal (culling or dying) of cows. The total costs of SCK were €130 per case per year, with a range between €39 and €348 (5 to 95 percentiles). The total costs of SCK per case per year, moreover, increased from €83 per year in parity 1 to €175 in parity 3. Most cows with SCK, however, had SCK only (61%), and costs were €58 per case per year. Total costs of SCK per case per year resulted for 36% from a prolonged calving interval, 24% from reduced milk production, 19% from treatment, 14% from discarded milk and 6% from removal. Results of the sensitivity analysis showed that the disease incidence, removal risk, relations of SCK with other diseases and prices of milk resulted in a high variation of costs of SCK. The costs of SCK, therefore, might differ per farm because of farm-specific circumstances. Improving data collection on the incidence of SCK and related diseases, and on consequences of diseases can further improve economic estimations.

New strategies must be developed to improve poultry performance and health. One of these strategies is the use of supplementations as sodium butyrate (SB) to improve the physiological status and then increasing the growth performance, but the best period of age in which the addition of SB is more effective on birds is not well understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary inclusion of SB supplementation through the first, second or whole growth period on some physiological indices and growth performance of growing Japanese quail. In total, 240 unsexed 1-day-old quail chicks were divided into four groups (three replicates per group of 20 chicks in each). The first group was fed basal diet without SB from 1 to 42 days (control, T1), while SB at a rate of 1 g/kg basal diet was mixed with the feed of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th groups of chicks from 1 to 21 days (SB 1 to 21, T2), 1 to 42 days (SB 1 to 42, T3) and 22 to 42 days (SB 22 to 42, T4) of age, respectively. The results stated that addition of SB significantly improved live BW at 21 days, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and BW gain (BWG) during 1 to 21 days in T2 and T3 groups compared to T1 and T4 groups. During the whole period, group T3 had higher BWG and better FCR than the other groups (T1, T2 and T4). At 21 days, no significant differences among all treatments were detected on haematology and serum biochemistry except total protein and cholesterol. At 42 days, SB supplementation significantly improved most serum constituents, haematological parameters, villus height and width of intestine and morphometry of immune organs. The group fed SB throughout the experiment (T3) showed the best results. In conclusion, it is recommended feeding quail on diets containing SB through the whole growth period to show its affirmative impact on the growth and physiological indices.

This study was designed to assess the value of seaweeds from the Galician coast as a source of minerals (especially iodine (I) but also other micro-minerals) in organic dairy cattle. It was conducted in an organic dairy farm in the Lugo province that typically represents the organic milk production in NW Spain. The animal’s diet consisted mainly of local forage (at pasture or as hay and silage in the winter) and 5 kg of purchased concentrate/day per animal (representing 23.5% of feed intake). Based on the mineral composition of the diet, the physiological requirements and the EU maximum authorised levels in feed, a supplement composed by Sea Lettuce (Ulva rigida) (as flakes, 80%), Japanese Wireweed (Sargasum muticum) (flakes, 17.5%) and Furbelows (Saccorhiza polyschides) (powder, 2.5%) was formulated to give 100 g/animal per day. Sixteen Holstein Friesian lactating cows were randomly selected and assigned to the control (n=8) and algae-supplemented groups (n=8). Both groups had exactly the same feeding and management with the exception of the algae supplement, which was mixed with the concentrate feed and given to the animals at their morning milking for 10 weeks. Heparinised blood (for plasma analysis) and milk samples were collected at 2-week intervals and analysed for toxic and trace element concentrations by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The algae supplement significantly improved the animals’ mineral status, particularly I and selenium that were low on the farm. However, the effect of the algae supplement on the molybdenum status in cattle needs further investigation because of its great relevance on copper metabolism in ruminants. The I supply deserves special attention, since this element is at a very high concentration in brown-algae species and it is excreted in the milk proportionally to its concentration in plasma concentrations (mean±s.e. in the algae-supplemented and control groups were 268±54 and 180±42 µg/l, respectively).

The behaviour of two groups offour pigs in concentrations of ammonia gas that are frequently recorded in piggeries (0, 10, 20 and 40 p.p.m.), was continuously observed for 14 days each in a choice test. An octagonally shaped (annular), eight compartment preference chamber was built to house the pigs. Each compartment supplied the pigs with ample food, water and bedding material but differed in the level of atmospheric contamination. Adjacent compartments were separated by plastic curtains, allowing the pigs free access to neighbouring compartments while reducing cross-contamination of the pollutant. The position of the contamination was changed weekly to eliminate positional preferences. The location of the pigs was scan sampled every 15 min and their behaviour at this time was instantaneously recorded. A significantly greater proportion of their time was spent in the unpolluted compartments (53·4%) than in the 10 p.p.m. (26·9%), 20 p.p.m. (7·1%) or 40 p.p.m. (5·1%) compartments (P < 0·001). This avoidance was maintained for the 14 days that each group inhabited the chamber (P > 0·05). The occupancy pattern was resumed following the rotation of the ammonia concentrations and/or following cleaning (P > 0·05). Higher concentrations of ammonia were visited less often (P = 0·005) and once there, the pigs stayed for a comparatively shorter time (P = 0·003) for approximately 35 min. As the aversion was not immediate, it is suggested that aversion was not due to the odour of ammonia initially experienced on entry. Instead the insidious aversion may be due to a sense of malaise that may develop while a pig is in a polluted atmosphere. The pigs chose to rest (P = 0·002), sit (P = 0·007), feed (P = 0·007) and forage (P = 0·013) more in the unpolluted compartments. Overall more feeding behaviour was observed in the fresh air and more food was consumed in these compartments of the chamber (P = 0·002).

The effects of an Aspergillus oryzae extract containing alpha-amylase activity (Amaize™, Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY) were examined in vivo and in vitro. A lactating cow study employed 20 intact and four ruminally fistulated Holstein cows in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin-square design to examine the effects of four concentrations of dietary Amaize™ extract on milk production and composition, ruminal fermentation and serum metabolite concentrations. The treatment diets contained 0, 240, 480 or 720 alpha-amylase dextrinizing units (DU) per kg of total mixed ration (TMR) (dry-matter basis). The supplemental alpha-amylase increased the yields of milk (P = 0·02), fat (P = 0·02) and protein (P = 0·06) quadratically. The maximum milk yield was obtained when 240 DU per kg of TMR were offered. Ruminal in situ starch disappearance was not affected by alpha-amylase supplementation in lactating cows or ruminally cannulated steers. Supplemental alpha-amylase extract reduced the molar proportion of propionate in the rumen of steers (P = 0·08) and lactating cows (P = 0·04), and in rumen-simulating cultures (P = 0·04). The supplement also increased the molar proportions of acetate (P = 0·06) and butyrate (P = 0·05), and the serum beta-hydroxybutyrate (P = 0·01) and non-esterified fatty acid (P = 0·03) concentrations in lactating cows. The improvements in milk production appear to be a consequence of the effects of alpha-amylase on ruminal fermentation and the potential changes in nutrient metabolism that result from them. We conclude that supplemental alpha-amylase may be given to modify ruminal fermentation and improve milk and component yield in lactating Holstein cattle.

Inflammatory cascades are a critical component of the immune response to infection or tissue damage, involving an array of signals, including water-soluble metabolites, lipid mediators and several classes of proteins. Early investigation of these signaling pathways focused largely on immune cells and acute disease models. However, more recent findings have highlighted critical roles of both immune cells and inflammatory mediators on tissue remodeling and metabolic homeostasis in healthy animals. In dairy cattle, inflammatory signals in various tissues and in circulation change rapidly and dramatically, starting just prior to and at the onset of lactation. Furthermore, several observations in healthy cows point to homeostatic control of inflammatory tone, which we define as a regulatory process to balance immune tolerance with activation to keep downstream effects under control. Recent evidence suggests that peripartum inflammatory changes influence whole-body nutrient flux of dairy cows over the course of days and months. Inflammatory mediators can suppress appetite, even at levels that do not induce acute responses (e.g. fever), thereby decreasing nutrient availability. On the other hand, inhibition of inflammatory signaling with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment suppresses hepatic gluconeogenesis, leading to hypoglycemia in some cases. Over the long term, though, peripartum NSAID treatment substantially increases peak and whole-lactation milk synthesis by multiparous cows. Inflammatory regulation of nutrient flux may provide a homeorhetic mechanism to aid cows in adapting to rapid changes in metabolic demand at the onset of lactation, but excessive systemic inflammation has negative effects on metabolic homeostasis through inhibition of appetite and promotion of immune cell activity. Thus, in this review, we provide perspectives on the overlapping regulation of immune responses and metabolism by inflammatory mediators, which may provide a mechanistic underpinning for links between infectious and metabolic diseases in transition dairy cows. Moreover, we point to novel approaches to the management of this challenging phase of the production cycle.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary zinc addition (0 or 15 mg/kg of Zn as inorganic or organic zinc) to three maize–soybean meal basal diets varying in their native Zn, phytic P contents and phytase activity (expressed in kg of feed: P− with 25 mg Zn and 1.3 g phytic P, P+ with 38 mg Zn and 2.3 g phytic P or P+/ENZ being P+ including 500 units (FTU) of microbial phytase per kg) in two monogastric species (piglets, broilers). Measured parameters were growth performance, zinc status (plasma, and bone zinc) and soluble zinc in digesta (stomach, gizzard and intestine). The nine experimental diets were fed for 20 days either to weaned piglets (six replicates per treatment) or to 1-day-old broilers (10 replicates per treatment). Animal performance was not affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05) except that all P− diets improved body weight gain and feed conversion ratio in piglets (P < 0.05). Piglets fed P− diets had a better Zn status than those fed P+ diets (P < 0.05). In both species, Zn status was improved with supplemental Zn (P < 0.05), irrespective of Zn source. Phytase supplementation improved piglet Zn status to a higher extent than adding dietary Zn, whereas in broilers, phytase was less efficient than supplemental Zn. Digestive Zn concentrations reflected the quantity of ingested Zn. Soluble Zn (mg/kg dry matter) and Zn solubility (% of total Zn content) were highest in gizzard contents, which also presented lower pH values than stomach or intestines. The intestinal Zn solubility was higher in piglet fed organic Zn than those fed inorganic Zn (P < 0.01). Phytase increased soluble Zn in piglet stomach (P < 0.001) and intestine (P = 0.1), but not in broiler gizzard and intestinal contents. These results demonstrate (i) that dietary zinc was used more efficiently by broilers than by piglets, most probably due to the lower gizzard pH and its related higher zinc solubility; (ii) that zinc supplementation, irrespective of zinc source, was successful in improving animal’s zinc status; and (iii) suggest that supplemented Zn availability was independent from the diet formulation. Finally, the present data confirm that phytase was efficient in increasing digestive soluble Zn and improving zinc status in piglets. However, the magnitude of these effects was lower in broilers probably due to the naturally higher Zn availability in poultry than in swine.

Prediction of nutrient partitioning is a long-standing problem of animal nutrition that has still not been solved. Another substantial problem for nutritional science is how to incorporate genetic differences into nutritional models. These two problems are linked as their biological basis lies in the relative priorities of different life functions (growth, reproduction, health, etc.) and how they change both through time and in response to genetic selection. This paper presents recent developments in describing this biological basis and evidence in support of the concepts involved as they relate to nutrient partitioning. There is ample evidence that at different stages of the reproductive cycle various metabolic pathways, such as lipolysis and lipogenesis, are up or down regulated. The net result of such changes is that nutrients are channelled to differing extents to different organs, life functions and end-products. This occurs not as a homeostatic function of changing nutritional environment but rather as a homeorhetic function caused by the changing expression of genes for processes such as milk production through time. In other words, the animal has genetic drives and there is an aspect of nutrient partitioning that is genetically driven. Evidence for genetic drives other than milk production is available and is discussed. Genetic drives for other life functions than just milk imply that nutrient partitioning will change through lactation and according to genotype – i.e. it cannot be predicted from feed properties alone. Progress in describing genetic drives and homeorhetic controls is reviewed. There is currently a lack of good genetic measures of physiological parameters. The unprecedented level of detail and amounts of data generated by the advent of microarray biotechnology and the fields of genomics, proteomics, etc. should in the long-term provide the necessary information to make the link between genetic drives and metabolism. However, gene expression, protein synthesis etc, have all been shown to be environmentally sensitive. Thus, a major challenge in realising the potential afforded by this new technology is to be able to be able to distinguish genetically driven and environmentally driven effects on expression. To do this we need a better understanding of the basis for the interactions between genotypes and environments. The biological limitations of traditional evaluation of genotype ×  environment interactions and plasticity are discussed and the benefits of considering these in terms of trade-offs between life functions is put forward. Trade-offs place partitioning explicitly at the centre of the resource allocation problem and allow consideration of the effects of management and selection on multiple traits and on nutrient partitioning.

Optimizing phosphorus (P) utilization in pigs requires improving our capacity to predict the amount of P absorbed and retained, with the main modulating factors taken into account, as well as precisely determining the P requirements of the animals. Given the large amount of published data on P utilization in pigs, a meta-analysis was performed to quantify the impact of the different dietary P forms, calcium (Ca) and exogenous phytases on the digestive and metabolic utilization criteria for dietary P in growing pigs. Accordingly, the amount of phytate P (PP) leading to digestible P (g/kg) was estimated to be 21%, compared with 73% for non-phytate P (NPP) from plant ingredients and 80% for NPP from mineral and animal ingredients (P < 0.001). The increase in total digestible dietary P following the addition of microbial phytase (PhytM) from Aspergillus niger (P < 0.001) was curvilinear and about two times higher than the increase following the addition of plant phytase, which leads to a linear response (P < 0.001). The response of digestible P to PhytM also depends on the amount of substrate, PP (PhytM2 × PP, P < 0.001). The digestibility of dietary P decreased with dietary Ca concentration (P < 0.01) independently of phytase but increased with body weight (BW, P < 0.05). Although total digestible dietary P increased linearly with total NPP concentration (P < 0.001), retained P (g/kg), average daily gain (ADG, g/day) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, g/day) increased curvilinearly (P < 0.001). Interestingly, whereas dietary Ca negatively affected P digestibility, the effect of dietary Ca on retained P, ADG and ADFI depended on total dietary NPP (NPP × Ca, P < 0.01, P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). Increasing dietary Ca reduced retained P, ADG and ADFI at low NPP levels, but at higher NPP concentrations it had no effect on ADG and ADFI despite a positive effect on retained P. Although the curvilinear effect of PhytM on digestible P increased with PP (P < 0.001), this effect was lessened by total NPP for ADG and ADFI (PhytM × NPP and PhytM2 × NPP, P < 0.05) and depended on both total NPP and Ca for retained P (PhytM2 × NPP × Ca, P < 0.01). This meta-analysis improves our understanding of P utilization, with major modulating factors taken into account. The information generated will be useful for the development of robust models to formulate environmentally friendly diets for growing pigs.

The objectives of this study were to compare the goodness of fit of four non-linear growth models, i.e. Brody, Gompertz, Logistic and Von Bertalanffy, in West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep. A total of 5274 monthly weight records from birth up to 180 days of age from 889 lambs, collected during 2001 to 2004 in Betecoucou breeding farm in Benin were used. In the preliminary analysis, the General Linear Model Procedure of the Statistical Analysis Systems Institute was applied to the dataset to identify the significant effects of the sex of lamb (male and female), type of birth (single and twin), season of birth (rainy season and dry season), parity of dam (1, 2 and 3) and year of birth (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004) on the observed birth weight and monthly weight up to 6 months of age. The models parameters (A, B and k), coefficient of determination (R2), mean square error (MSE) were calculated using language of technical computing package Matlab®, 2006. The mean values of A, B and k were substituted into each model to calculate the corresponding Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC). Among the four growth functions, the Brody model has been selected for its accuracy of fit according to the higher R2, lower MSE and AIC. Finally, the parameters A, B and k were adjusted in Matlab®, 2006 for the sex of lamb, year of birth, season of birth, birth type and the parity of ewe, providing a specific slope of the Brody growth curve. The results of this study suggest that Brody model can be useful for WAD sheep breeding in Betecoucou farm conditions through growth monitoring.

1. Rates of heat loss from 12 groups of pigs were measured over 4-week periods in a large direct calorimeter equipped as a pig pen.

2. The levels of feeding in different groups were 34, 39, 45 and 52g/kg body weight per day, and the calorimeter temperatures were 7°, 12°, 20° and 30°C.

3. At 12°, 20° and 30°C the rates of heat loss were related to the level of feeding.

4. At 7°C the mean rate of heat loss was higher than at the other temperatures, and was not related to the level of feeding.

The digestive ability of growing pigs and large adult sows was compared in digestibility experiments with 26 foodstuffs and diets. In all cases, the sows showed superior digestibility of nutrients. On average, the sows digested 150 g more crude protein, 100 g more crude fat, 300 g more crude fibre per kg diet and proportionately 0·09 more gross energy than the young animals. The superior ability of the sows to digest gross energy was negatively correlated with the soluble carbohydrate and gross energy concentration of the food. A close linear relationship between digestibility in growing pigs and that in sows was found, making it possible to apply digestibility data for growing pigs in practical diet formulation for sows.

The patterns of seasonal variation in reproductive activity were observed over a period of 15 mo for approximately 15 females of each of three breeds: Finnish Landrace (Finn), Tasmanian Merino (Merino) and Scottish Blackface (Blackface). The incidence of oestrus was measured by teasing with vasectomized rams, and the incidence and rate of ovulation were determined frequently by laparoscopy. Luteal function was assessed from peripheral venous blood progesterone concentration on days 7 and 11 of the oestrous cycle. Nutritional status was monitored by recording body weight and plasma-free fatty acid levels throughout the study.

The breeding seasons differed significantly: Finn, October to May; Merino, September to February; and Blackface, October to February. Variation in the incidence of ovulation was similar to that in the incidence of oestrus for each breed. The incidence of silent ovulation varied with the breed, being greatest in the Merino and least in the Finn. The ovulation rate varied among breeds (Finn, 2·99; Merino, 1·08 and Blackface, 1·30), and during the breeding season (e.g. Finn: November, 3·5; March, 2·6). Follicles were observed in each breed throughout the period of study.

The pattern of variation in progesterone concentration was similar for each breed despite their different breeding seasons. In addition to breed differences in ovulation rate and in onset and end of the breeding season, the sensitivity to oestrogen was apparently such that, with the Finn if oestrogen secretion was high enough to stimulate ovulation it would usually also stimulate oestrus, whereas with the Merino ovulation often occurred without oestrus; this suggests that in the Merino the centres controlling ovulation are more sensitive to oestrogen than those controlling behaviour.
