In tandem with the fast-growing demand for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance, advanced controllers for these critical systems are needed. This paper proposes a flight dynamics controller design that considers various uncertainties for the Hydra Technologies UAS-S4 Ehécatl. In order to be realistic, in addition to flight dynamics nonlinearities, three main sources of uncertainties are considered, as those caused by unknown controller’s parameters, modeling errors, and external disturbances. A Robust adaptive fuzzy logic controller is designed, in charge of nonlinear flight dynamics in presence of a variety of uncertainties. The nonlinear flight dynamics is modeled based on the Takagi-Sugeno method relying on the soft association of local linear models. Since this controller is model-based, an optimal reference model is defined, which is stabilised by the Linear Quadratic Regulator procedure. A fuzzy logic controller is then designed for the nonlinear model. Lastly, with the aim to handle the uncertainties, the gains of the fuzzy controller are reconfigured, and are continuously adjusted by Lyapunov-based robust adaptive laws. The performance of the UAS-S4 Robust adaptive fuzzy logic controller is evaluated in terms of lateral and longitudinal flight dynamics stabilisation, and the reference model state variables tracking under various uncertainties.

Intense acoustic loads from jet noise cause noise pollution and induce failures, such as the malfunctioning of electronic devices and fatigue failure of internal/external structures. Consequently, the prediction of jet noise characteristics is crucial in the development of high-speed vehicles. This study presents acoustic experiments and predictions for an under-expanded, unheated jet using a small-scale prototype. Outdoor measurements are carried out using a vertical ejection setup. Acoustic characteristics are measured using both linear and circular microphone arrays. Additionally, numerical prediction of the same jet noise is performed using a detached eddy simulation and the permeable Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy. The vertical experimental setup exhibits the typical acoustic characteristics of a supersonic jet in terms of directivity and broadband shock-associated noise. Moreover, the numerical prediction exhibits satisfactory accuracy for the jet downstream, where the large-scale turbulence structures of the directivity predominate. However, discrepancy increases in the domain of lower directivity. The presented experiment and prediction will be extended to future studies regarding the noise of various deflector duct configurations impinging on supersonic jets.

The aim of this paper is to provide preliminary results on a traffic coordination framework based on stochastic task allocation. General trends and the predicted advent of personal aerial vehicles increase traffic rapidly, but current air traffic management methods admittedly cannot scale appropriately. A hierarchical system is proposed to overcome the problem, the middle layer of which is elaborated in this paper. This layer aims to enable stochastic control of traffic behaviour using a single parameter, which is achieved by applying distributed stochastic task allocation. The task allocation algorithm is used to allocate speeds to vehicles in a scalable way. By regulating the speed distribution of vehicles the conflict rates remain manageable. Multi-agent simulation results show that it is possible to control ensemble dynamics and together with that traffic safety and throughput via a single parameter. Using transient simulations the dynamic performance of the system is analysed. It is shown that the traffic conflict reduction problem can be transformed into a control design problem. The performance of a simple controller is also evaluated. It was shown that by applying the controller, quicker transients can be achieved for the mean speed of the system.

The rotorcraft is a complex dynamical system that demands specialist modelling skills, and a high level of understanding of the aeromechanics arising from the main rotor wake and aerodynamic couplings. One such example is the difficulty predicting off-axis responses, particularly in hover and low-speed flight, associated with induced velocity variation through the rotor disk resulting from the rotor wake distortions. Various approaches have been developed to deal with this phenomenon but usually demand prerequisites of high levels of expertise and profound aerodynamic knowledge. This paper presents a new and practical approach to capturing this wake distortion through an augmented rotor inflow model. The proposed model is coupled with a nonlinear simulation using the FLIGHTLAB environment, and comparisons are made between the simulation results and flight test data from the National Research Council of Canada’s Advanced System Research Aircraft in hover and low speed. Results show good predictability of the proposed nonlinear model structure, demonstrated by its capability to closely match the time responses to multi-step control inputs from flight test. The results reported are part of ongoing research at Liverpool and Cranfield University into rotorcraft simulation fidelity.

This article focuses on the aerodynamic design of a morphing aerofoil at cruise conditions using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The morphing aerofoil has been analysed at a Mach number of 0.8 and Reynolds number of $3 \times 10^{6}$ , which represents the transonic cruise speed of a commercial aircraft. In this research, the NACA0012 aerofoil has been identified as the baseline aerofoil where the analysis has been performed under steady conditions at a range of angles of attack between $0^{^{\kern1pt\circ}}$ and $3.86^{^{\kern1pt\circ}}$ . The performance of the baseline case has been compared to the morphing aerofoil for different morphing deflections ( $w_{te}/c = [0.005 - 0.1]$ ) and start of the morphing locations ( $x_{s}/c = [0.65 - 0.80]$ ). Further, the location of the shock wave on the upper surface has also been investigated due to concerns about the structural integrity of the morphing part of the aerofoil. Based upon this investigation, a most favourable morphed geometry has been presented that offers both, a significant increase in the lift-to-drag ratio against its un-morphed counterpart and has a shock location upstream of the start of the morphing part.

Climate change is increasing global-mean tropospheric temperatures, but the localised trends are uneven, including cooling the lower stratosphere and lifting the tropopause. The wind speeds are also being modified, both at the surface and aloft. A further effect, additional to wind and temperature alone, is of increasing fluctuations and severity of extreme weather. These are impacting air transport, and this will continue. The effects are known to include increased take-off distances where excess runway lengths exist and reduced payloads where they do not, increased en-route flight times, increased frequency and severity of encounters with clear air turbulence in some regions, changed patterns of wildlife — particularly bird — activity in some regions (potentially also for other anthropogenic reasons) are shifting locations of flight safety hazards, and increased burdens upon airport and associated infrastructure. There is increasing understanding and acknowledgment by companies and authorities of these effects and the importance of mitigating them, although this is not universal and there are as yet no universally understood best practices for air transport climate change mitigation.

Comprehensive understanding of propulsive jet aerodynamics and aeroacoustics is key to engine design for reduced jet noise and infra-red signature in civil and military aerospace, respectively. Illustrated examples are provided of other aerodynamic/aeroacoustic problems involving jet development, including chevron nozzles, increased jet/wing/flap interference (as fan diameter increases), high acoustic environment (and potentially damaging screech) of supersonic jets on carrier decks and the strongly Three-Dimensional (3D) unsteady flow during the in-ground effect operation of Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft. To date, laboratory/rig test measurements have primarily been used to identify design solutions; increased use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) would help achieve cost/time reductions, but Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes (RANS) CFD with statistical turbulence modelling has proven inadequate for such flows. The scenarios described are far removed from flows used to calibrate model constants, and predictive accuracy demands detailed insight into unsteady flow. Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), whilst computationally more demanding, offers a potential solution. Research undertaken to assess LES capability to address the challenges described is reviewed here. This demonstrates that tremendous progress has been made, indicating that LES can provide sufficiently accurate predictions, representing high value for engineering design. A series of validation studies of increasing realism to practical engineering systems is presented to underpin this conclusion. Finally, areas for further work are suggested to support the combined application of RANS and LES that is probably the optimum way forward.

The research reported in this paper is aimed at the development of a metric to quantify and predict the extent of pilot control compensation required to fly a wide range of mission task elements. To do this, the utility of a range of time- and frequency-domain measures to examine pilot control activity whilst flying hover/low-speed and forward flight tasks are explored. The tasks were performed by two test pilots using both the National Research Council (Canada)’s Bell 412 Advanced Systems Research Aircraft and the University of Liverpool’s HELIFLIGHT-R simulator. Handling qualities ratings were awarded for each of the tasks and compared with a newly developed weighted adaptive control compensation metric based on discrete pilot inputs, showing good correlation. Moreover, in combination with a time-varying frequency-domain exposure, the proposed metric is shown to be useful for understanding the relationship between the pilot’s subjective assessment, measured control activity and task performance. By collating the results from the subjective and objective metrics for a range of different mission task elements, compensation boundaries are proposed to predict and verify the subjective assessments from the Cooper-Harper Handling Qualities Rating scale.

An evaluation of the effects of different ice configurations on the flight characteristics of a fixed-wing aircraft is presented. Within a joint research project of German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer simulation models of three supercooled large droplet (SLD) ice configurations were developed for one Phenom 300 prototype. A specific flight test campaign with artificial SLD ice shapes on the aircraft was conducted to gather the relevant flight data. The simulation models for the different ice configuration were obtained by system identification, and specific results for the SLD-ice simulation models are provided. The analysis of aircraft characteristics was based on the results of these high-quality simulation models: the icing-induced changes of the flight performance characteristics evaluated by the interpretation of several parameters like thrust-to-weight ratio and specific excess power. The typical flight performance degradation was found for all ice configurations with different magnitude. The change of aircraft eigenmodes was investigated in detail by analysing the system matrix of the linearised models at a specific trim points. In addition, the diverse effects found for different ice configurations (App. C and SLD) are discussed and the change of root locus is analysed. Furthermore, ice-induced changes of the handling qualities are evaluated using numerical criteria of flying qualities standard “MIL-STD-1797 A”: no significant deterioration was found for the investigated ice configurations.

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites generally have a layered architecture and are commonly manufactured with thermosetting resins—making them susceptible to interlaminar fracture (i.e. delamination), which is often a major concern in structurally critical applications. As a result, various approaches have been explored to enhance interlaminar fracture resistance. This review focuses on third-phase toughener inclusions, which offer opportunities to create damage resistant and damage tolerant structures without significantly adding weight or reducing in-plane mechanical properties. These toughener inclusions, typically introduced in the interlaminar regions, are divided into two categories herein: particle fillers and non-woven fibre veils. The advantages and limitations of both types are discussed, and the potential of the two approaches is evaluated using published data, aiming to provide an overview of the current understanding and challenges in designing and manufacturing safe and reliable composite structures.

The quadratic constitutive relation was proposed as an extension of minimal complexity to linear eddy-viscosity models in order to improve mean flow predictions by better estimating turbulent stress distributions. However, the successes of this modification have been relatively modest and are limited to improved calculations of flow along streamwise corners, which are influenced by weak secondary vortices. This paper revisits the quadratic constitutive relation in an attempt to explain its capabilities and deficiencies. The success in streamwise corner flows cannot be entirely explained by significant improvements in turbulent stress estimates in general, but is instead due to better prediction of the particular turbulent stress combinations which appear in the mean streamwise vorticity equation. As a consequence of this investigation, a new formulation of turbulent stress modification is proposed, which appears to better predict the turbulent stress distributions for a variety of flows: channel flow, equilibrium boundary layers, pipe flow, separated boundary layers and square duct flow.

In this paper, the accuracy and practical capabilities of three different reduced-order models (ROMs) are explored: an enhanced implicit condensation and expansion (EnICE) model, a finite element beam model, and a finite volume beam model are compared for their capability to accurately predict the nonlinear structural response of geometrically nonlinear built-up wing structures. This work briefly outlines the different order reduction methods, highlighting the associated assumptions and computational effort. The ROMs are then used to calculate the wing deflection for different representative load cases and these results are compared with the global finite element model (GFEM) predictions when possible. Overall, the ROMs are found to be able to capture the nonlinear GFEM behaviour accurately, but differences are noticed at very large displacements and rotations due to local geometrical effects.

Camber morphing is an effective way to control the lift generated by any aerofoil and potentially improve the range (as measured by the lift-to-drag ratio) and endurance (as measured by $C_l^{3/2}/C_d$ ). This can be especially useful for fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) undergoing different flying manoeuvres and flight phases. This work investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA0012 aerofoil morphed using a Single Corrugated Variable-Camber (SCVC) morphing approach. Structural analysis and morphed shapes are obtained based on small-deformation beam theory using chain calculations and validated using finite-element software. The aerofoil is then reconstructed from the camber line using a Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based interpolation method (J.H.S. Fincham and M.I. Friswell, “Aerodynamic optimisation of a camber morphing aerofoil,” Aerosp. Sci. Technol., 2015). The aerodynamic analysis is done by employing two different finite-volume solvers (OpenFOAM and ANSYS-Fluent) and a panel method code (XFoil). Results reveal that the aerodynamic coefficients predicted by the two finite-volume solvers using a fully turbulent flow assumption are similar but differ from those predicted by XFoil. The aerodynamic efficiency and endurance factor of morphed aerofoils indicate that morphing is beneficial at moderate to high lift requirements. Further, the optimal morphing angle increases with an increase in the required lift. Finally, it is observed for a fixed angle-of-attack that an optimum morphing angle exists for which the aerodynamic efficiency becomes maximum.

Increasingly agile manoeuvre is an advantage in the flight of aircraft, missiles and aerial vehicles, but the principles of accelerating aerodynamics in the transonic regime are only now being fully investigated. This study contributes to the understanding of shock and separation effects on drag during axial acceleration, using a simple geometric configuration. Unsteady shock wave behavior was numerically investigated for an axisymmetric cone-cylinder using a commercial solver and the Moving Reference Frame acceleration technique. This acceleration technique was validated using unsteady numerical and experimental methods. The cone-cylinder was accelerated from Mach number 0.6 to Mach number 1.2 at 100g constant and deceleration was from Mach number 1.2 until Mach number 0.6 at –100g constant. Three cone angles were tested for the cone-cylinder with uniform cylinder diameter. Acceleration through the transonic Mach regime was characterised by a delayed and gradual shock wave development when compared to steady state, demonstrating a clear flow history effect. Deceleration through the transonic Mach regime was characterised by shock wave propagation from the base to the nose. New flow structures appeared during deceleration that do not have counterparts in the steady state, including shock interactions and propagating expansion-compression features. Gross changes in the unsteady drag coefficient curves for each cone-angle are explained with reference to unsteady shock wave behaviour for accelerating and decelerating motion.

Strategic airlift is a crucial capability for any country that wants to protect its global interests around the world. Air refueling may offer more agile and efficient airlift capabilities by increasing cargo aircraft payload and shortening airlift time. We investigated whether air refueling can shorten the total time of an airlift operation and decrease the number of cargo aircraft sorties required in a deployment scenario, especially where the distance between origin and destination is within the range of cargo aircraft. We introduced two mathematical models to compare the total airlift time and number of cargo aircraft required for given origin-destination and tanker base locations and total freight to be moved. We optimised initial cargo and fuel amount for cargo aircraft along with rendezvous point coordinates to minimise total airlift time. We used a numerical example to show that substantial airlift time and cargo aircraft sortie savings are possible through air refueling.

There are significant variations in the fuel consumption of aircraft during the descent phase of a flight. This paper uses aircraft flight data measurements to develop an improved understanding of these variations. A model of the aircraft engines is developed that is matched to flight data and shown to reproduce the time history of engine parameters. This model is used to determine the overall engine efficiency at each point during a descent. This enables an energy breakdown to be completed, in terms of mechanical energy from fuel, gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy. During descent, the aircraft engines operate at low overall pressure ratios corresponding to low fuel flow rates and low overall efficiencies. On average, the engine overall efficiency during descent is one-third of cruise efficiency. The airframe aerodynamic performance is deteriorated during descent with an average lift-to-drag ratio that is 87% of the average value at cruise. There are also large variations in air-track efficiency, and for the flights analysed the great circle descent distance was found to be 85% of the average descent air distance. To minimise fuel burn, flights should cruise as far as possible before starting descent and follow a trajectory with the shortest possible air distance. The descent air speed should be set to maximise the aircraft lift-to-drag ratio. Such descents could save up to 0.5% of the total aircraft mass in fuel.

Increasing demand for commercial air travel is projected to have additional environmental impact through increased emissions from fuel burn. This has necessitated the improvement of aircraft propulsion technologies and proposal of new concepts to mitigate this impact. The hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion system has been identified as a potential method to achieve this improvement. However, there are many challenges to overcome. One such challenges is the combination of electrical power sources and the best strategy to manage the power available in the propulsion system. Earlier methods reviewed did not quantify the mass and efficiency penalties incurred by each method, especially at system level. This work compares three power management approaches on the basis of feasibility, mass and efficiency. The focus is on voltage synchronisation and adaptation to the load rating. The three methods are the regulated rectification, the generator field flux variation and the buck-boost. This comparison was made using the propulsion system of the propulsive fuselage aircraft concept as the reference electrical configuration. Based on the findings, the generator field flux variation approach appeared to be the most promising, based on a balance of feasibility, mass and efficiency, for a 2.6MW system.

An efficient, fully coupled beam model is developed to analyse laminated composite thin-walled structures with arbitrary cross-sections. The Euler–Lagrangian equations are derived from the kinematic relationships for a One-Dimensional (1D) beam representing Three-Dimensional (3D) deformations that take into account the cross-sectional stiffness of the composite structure. The formulation of the cross-sectional stiffness includes all the deformation effects and related elastic couplings. To circumvent the problem of shear locking, exact solutions to the approximating Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) are obtained symbolically instead of by numerical integration. The developed locking-free composite beam element results in an exact stiffness matrix and has super-convergent characteristics. The beam model is tested for different types of layup, and the results are validated by comparison with experimental results from literature.

An unusual philosophical approach is proposed here to decarbonise larger civil aircraft that fly long ranges and consume a large fraction of civil aviation fuel. These inject an important amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere, and holistic decarbonising solutions must consider this sector. A philosophical–analytical investigation is reported here on the feasibility of an airliner family to fly over long ranges and assist in the elimination of carbon dioxide emissions from civil aviation.

Backed by state-of-the-art correlations and engine performance integration analytical tools, a family of large airliners is proposed based on the development and integration of the body of a very large two-deck four-engine airliner with the engines, wings and flight control surfaces of a very long-range twin widebody jet. The proposal is for a derivative design and not a retrofit. This derivative design may enable a swifter entry to service.

The main contribution of this study is a philosophical one: a carefully evaluated aircraft family that appears to have very good potential for first-generation hydrogen-fuelled airliners using gas turbine engines for propulsion. This family offers three variants: a 380-passenger aircraft with a range of 3,300nm, a 330-passenger aircraft with a range of 4,800nm and a 230-passenger aircraft with a range of 5,500nm. The latter range is crucially important because it permits travel from anywhere in the globe to anywhere else with only one stop. The jet engine of choice is a 450kN high-bypass turbofan.

We previously described an efficient, lightweight and flexible electro-thermal system, based on directly drawn carbon nanotube web (CNT web), as part of an icing protection system for carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite aircraft structures. The location of the heating elements on critical lifting surface leading edges or nacelle intake lips makes them particularly susceptible to impact damage, which may leave no visible mark. This makes it desirable to have both a mechanism for identifying the location of damage to the CNT structure (and by inference, potential damage to the underlying CFRP) and a process for restoring the CNT heater to full operation. With the CNT web acting as a sensor, impact damage is identified by an increase in electrical resistance and, particularly, by infrared imaging, which reveals a cold spot or zone depending upon the CNT web layup. Whereas a unidirectional CNT web layup exhibits a large increase in resistance and loss of a full width band of operation, a cross ply quasi-isotropic CNT web arrangement suffers only a small increase in resistance and a loss of function that is highly localised to the damaged area. A novel methodology, based on dispersed CNT in resin, is described for repairing and reconnecting the CNT structure and restoring functionality. A CNT web-based electro-thermal element was applied to the leading edge of a representative carbon-fibre composite wing section to demonstrate the flexibility of this system.
