Inaccuracy and information measures based on cumulative residual entropy are quite useful and have received considerable attention in many fields, such as statistics, probability, and reliability theory. In particular, many authors have studied cumulative residual inaccuracy between coherent systems based on system lifetimes. In a previous paper (Bueno and Balakrishnan, Prob. Eng. Inf. Sci. 36, 2022), we discussed a cumulative residual inaccuracy measure for coherent systems at component level, that is, based on the common, stochastically dependent component lifetimes observed under a non-homogeneous Poisson process. In this paper, using a point process martingale approach, we extend this concept to a cumulative residual inaccuracy measure between non-explosive point processes and then specialize the results to Markov occurrence times. If the processes satisfy the proportional risk hazard process property, then the measure determines the Markov chain uniquely. Several examples are presented, including birth-and-death processes and pure birth process, and then the results are applied to coherent systems at component level subject to Markov failure and repair processes.

In this paper we present results on the concentration properties of the smoothing and filtering distributions of some partially observed chaotic dynamical systems. We show that, rather surprisingly, for the geometric model of the Lorenz equations, as well as some other chaotic dynamical systems, the smoothing and filtering distributions do not concentrate around the true position of the signal, as the number of observations tends to ∞. Instead, under various assumptions on the observation noise, we show that the expected value of the diameter of the support of the smoothing and filtering distributions remains lower bounded by a constant multiplied by the standard deviation of the noise, independently of the number of observations. Conversely, under rather general conditions, the diameter of the support of the smoothing and filtering distributions are upper bounded by a constant multiplied by the standard deviation of the noise. To some extent, applications to the three-dimensional Lorenz 63 model and to the Lorenz 96 model of arbitrarily large dimension are considered.

In Weil (2001) formulae were proved for stationary Boolean models Z in ℝd with convex or polyconvex grains, which express the densities (specific mean values) of mixed volumes of Z in terms of related mean values of the underlying Poisson particle process X. These formulae were then used to show that in dimensions 2 and 3 the densities of mixed volumes of Z determine the intensity γ of X. For d = 4, a corresponding result was also stated, but the proof given was incomplete, since in the formula for the density of the Euler characteristic V̅0(Z) of Z a term $\overline V^{(0)}_{2,2}(X,X)$ was missing. This was pointed out in Goodey and Weil (2002), where it was also explained that a new decomposition result for mixed volumes and mixed translative functionals would be needed to complete the proof. Such a general decomposition result has recently been proved by Hug, Rataj, and Weil (2013), (2018) and is based on flag measures of the convex bodies involved. Here, we show that such flag representations not only lead to a correct derivation of the four-dimensional result, but even yield a corresponding uniqueness theorem in all dimensions. In the proof of the latter we make use of Alesker’s representation theorem for translation invariant valuations. We also discuss which shape information can be obtained in this way and comment on the situation in the nonstationary case.

The Marcinkiewicz strong law, limn→∞(1 / n1/p)∑k=1n(Dk - D) = 0 almost surely with p ∈ (1, 2), is studied for outer products Dk = {XkX̅kT}, where {Xk} and {X̅k} are both two-sided (multivariate) linear processes (with coefficient matrices (Cl), (C̅l) and independent and identically distributed zero-mean innovations {Ξ} and {Ξ̅}). Matrix sequences Cl and C ̅l can decay slowly enough (as |l| → ∞) that {Xk,X ̅k} have long-range dependence, while {Dk} can have heavy tails. In particular, the heavy-tail and long-range-dependence phenomena for {Dk} are handled simultaneously and a new decoupling property is proved that shows the convergence rate is determined by the worst of the heavy tails or the long-range dependence, but not the combination. The main result is applied to obtain a Marcinkiewicz strong law of large numbers for stochastic approximation, nonlinear function forms, and autocovariances.

We consider transport networks with nodes scattered at random in a large domain. At certain local rates, the nodes generate traffic flows according to some navigation scheme in a given direction. In the thermodynamic limit of a growing domain, we present an asymptotic formula expressing the local traffic flow density at any given location in the domain in terms of three fundamental characteristics of the underlying network: the spatial intensity of the nodes together with their traffic generation rates, and of the links induced by the navigation. This formula holds for a general class of navigations satisfying a link-density and a sub-ballisticity condition. As a specific example, we verify these conditions for navigations arising from a directed spanning tree on a Poisson point process with inhomogeneous intensity function.

We consider two types of particles performing simple random walks on the integers. When two particles of different types collide they are immediately annihilated. All particles of one type are started off to the left of the origin, and all particles of the other type are started off to the right of the origin. We determine the asymptotic rate of annihilations and the fluctuations, around this rate, of the numbers annihilated at large times.

The purpose of the present paper is to give a general theory of the quantum mechanical representation of particle populations.

The first part of the paper, Sections 1 to 5, is devoted to a review of mathematical principles of quantum theory, with particular emphasis on the role played by probability concepts, using an approach adapted to the subsequent development of the theory of particle populations. This approach, which goes back in its essentials to von Neumann [20], leans heavily on the subsequent work of Wigner, Mackey, Jauch, Segal, Wightman and many others (see e.g., Mackey [15], Jauch [11], Streater and Wightman [26]). Sections 6 to 9 deal with the representation of finite particle populations: i.e., quantum systems where the total number of particles is an observable. In Section 10 a brief sketch is given of the generalization of the theory to infinite populations where the total number of particles is not an observable, as e.g., in the statistical theory of an infinitely extended gas (see Ruelle [22]). Finally, Section 11 treats some simple examples.

In a multi-server queueing system in which the customers are of several different types, it is useful to define states which specify the types of customers being served as well as the total number present. Analogies with some problems in statistical mechanics are found fruitful. Certain generating functions are defined in such a way that they satisfy a system of linear equations. Solution of the associated eigenvector problem shows that the steady-state probabilities for states in which all the servers are busy can be represented by a weighted sum of geometric probabilities.

A method originating from statistical mechanics (low-density and high-temperature expansions) is used to prove the existence and uniqueness of a stationary regime for switching networks on finite or infinite graphs. The main assumption is that the message (customer) flows circulating through the network are ‘localized' in the sense that, for any message, the probability of having a long path is rapidly decreasing (and, moreover, a path of a ‘typical' message consists of one line). The switching rule combines message-switching and circuit-switching principles. The stationary regime for the network under consideration may be treated as a ‘small perturbation' of the ‘idealized' regime in the totally decoupled network where all the messages have single line paths.

We construct an immigration-branching process from an inhomogeneous Poisson process, a parameter-dependent probability distribution of populations and a Markov branching process with homogeneous transition function. The set of types is arbitrary, and the parameter is allowed to be discrete or continuous. Assuming a supercritical branching part with primitive first moments and finite second moments, we prove propositions on the mean square convergence and the almost sure convergence of normalized averaging processes associated with the immigration-branching process.

This paper presents a powerful characterisation for the structure of internal vertices of the STIT's I-segments. The characterisation allows certain mathematical analyses to be performed easily. We demonstrate this by deriving new results for various topological properties of the tessellation: for example, the numbers of various types of edge and cell side within the typical I-segment. The characterisation also provides a tool for the calculations of metric properties of the tessellation; many new length distributions and frame-coverage results are given.

We present a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the time to absorption of Λ-coalescents with dust started from n blocks, as n→∞. The proofs rely on an approximation of the logarithm of the block-counting process by means of a drifted subordinator.

Consider the following migration process based on a closed network of N queues with $K_N$ customers. Each station is a $\cdot$/M/$\infty$ queue with service (or migration) rate $\mu$. Upon departure, a customer is routed independently and uniformly at random to another station. In addition to migration, these customers are subject to a susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) dynamics. That is, customers are in one of two states: I for infected, or S for susceptible. Customers can swap their state either from I to S or from S to I only in stations. More precisely, at any station, each susceptible customer becomes infected with the instantaneous rate $\alpha Y$ if there are Y infected customers in the station, whereas each infected customer recovers and becomes susceptible with rate $\beta$. We let N tend to infinity and assume that $\lim_{N\to \infty} K_N/N= \eta $, where $\eta$ is a positive constant representing the customer density. The main problem of interest concerns the set of parameters of such a system for which there exists a stationary regime where the epidemic survives in the limiting system. The latter limit will be referred to as the thermodynamic limit. We use coupling and stochastic monotonicity arguments to establish key properties of the associated Markov processes, which in turn allow us to give the structure of the phase transition diagram of this thermodynamic limit with respect to $\eta$. The analysis of the Kolmogorov equations of this SIS model reduces to that of a wave-type PDE for which we have found no explicit solution. This plain SIS model is one among several companion stochastic processes that exhibit both random migration and contagion. Two of them are discussed in the present paper as they provide variants to the plain SIS model as well as some bounds and approximations. These two variants are the departure-on-change-of-state (DOCS) model and the averaged-infection-rate (AIR) model, which both admit closed-form solutions. The AIR system is a classical mean-field model where the infection mechanism based on the actual population of infected customers is replaced by a mechanism based on some empirical average of the number of infected customers in all stations. The latter admits a product-form solution. DOCS features accelerated migration in that each change of SIS state implies an immediate departure. This model leads to another wave-type PDE that admits a closed-form solution. In this text, the main focus is on the closed stochastic networks and their limits. The open systems consisting of a single station with Poisson input are instrumental in the analysis of the thermodynamic limits and are also of independent interest. This class of SIS dynamics has incarnations in virtually all queueing networks of the literature.
