The first purpose of this article is to study the phase transitions of a new interacting particle system. We consider two types of particle, each of which gives birth to particles of the same type as the parent. Particles of the second type can die, whereas those of the first type mutate into the second type. We prove that the three possible outcomes of the process, that is, extinction, survival of the type-2s, or coexistence, may each occur, depending on the selected parameters. Our second, and main, objective, however, is to investigate the duality properties of the process; the corresponding dual process exhibits a structure somewhat different to that of well-known particle systems.

The problem of optimally scaling the proposal distribution in a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is critical to the quality of the generated samples. Much work has gone into obtaining such results for various Metropolis–Hastings (MH) algorithms. Recently, acceptance probabilities other than MH are being employed in problems with intractable target distributions. There are few resources available on tuning the Gaussian proposal distributions for this situation. We obtain optimal scaling results for a general class of acceptance functions, which includes Barker’s and lazy MH. In particular, optimal values for Barker’s algorithm are derived and found to be significantly different from that obtained for the MH algorithm. Our theoretical conclusions are supported by numerical simulations indicating that when the optimal proposal variance is unknown, tuning to the optimal acceptance probability remains an effective strategy.

We consider a nonnegative discrete time and bounded horizon process X for which 0 is an absorbing state and extend it by a random variable that is independent of X. We find a sufficient condition for the resulting process to satisfy, after a canonical time rescaling, the hypothesis of the monotone case theorem. If X describes a secretary type search on a poset with one maximal element or if we consider X with no extension then this condition assumes an especially simple log-concavity type form.

An expression for the asymptotic or steady-state performance function is derived for a multistate coherent system when each component changes states in time according to a semi-Markov process, the stochastic processes being mutually independent. This generalizes the expression for system availability of a binary coherent system when the components are governed by mutually independent alternating renewal processes.

We study a type of nonnormal small jump approximation of infinitely divisible distributions. By incorporating compound Poisson, gamma, and normal distributions, the approximation has a higher order of cumulant matching than its normal counterpart, and, hence, in many cases a higher rate of approximation error decay as the cutoff for the jump size tends to 0. The parameters of the approximation are easy to fix, and its random sampling has the same order of computational complexity as the normal approximation. An error bound of the approximation in terms of the total variation distance is derived. Simulations empirically show that the nonnormal approximation can have a significantly smaller error than its normal counterpart.

We study an open discrete-time queueing network. We assume data is generated at nodes of the network as a discrete-time Bernoulli process. All nodes in the network maintain a queue and relay data, which is to be finally collected by a designated sink. We prove that the resulting multidimensional Markov chain representing the queue size of nodes has two behavior regimes depending on the value of the rate of data generation. In particular, we show that there is a nontrivial critical value of the data rate below which the chain is ergodic and converges to a stationary distribution and above which it is non-ergodic, i.e., the queues at the nodes grow in an unbounded manner. We show that the rate of convergence to stationarity is geometric in the subcritical regime.

We consider a class of Gaussian processes which are obtained as height processes of some (d + 1)-dimensional dynamic random interface model on ℤd. We give an estimate of persistence probability, namely, large T asymptotics of the probability that the process does not exceed a fixed level up to time T. The interaction of the model affects the persistence probability and its asymptotics changes depending on the dimension d.

In this paper we attempt to develop an axiomatic theory of binary structure functions with dependent components. This is an important problem, hitherto largely ignored. The concept of coherent structure in probability is introduced and studied. The relationship to the classical coherent structure is discussed. In the new concept the relevancy is defined through reliability of the system, while in the classical concept it is defined through the structure function.

Many queues and related stochastic models, and in particular those that have a matrix-geometric stationary probability vector, have steady-state queue-length densities that are asymptotically geometric. The graph of the asymptotic rate η of these densities as a function of the traffic intensity ρ is the caudal characteristic curve. This is an informative graph from which a number of qualitative inferences about the behavior of the queue may be drawn.

In this paper, the behavior of a Gaussian random field near an ‘upcrossing' of a fixed level is investigated by strengthening the results of Wilson and Adler (1982) to full weak convergence in the space of functions which have continuous derivatives up to order 2. In Section 1, weak convergence and model processes are briefly discussed. The model field of Wilson and Adler (1982) is constructed in Section 2 using full weak convergence. Some of its properties are also investigated. Section 3 contains asymptotic results for the model field, including the asymptotic distributions of the Lebesgue measure of a particular excursion set and the maximum of the model field as the level becomes arbitrarily high.

We study the stochastic comparison of interacting particle systems where the state space of each particle is a finite set endowed with a partial order, and several particles may change their value at a time. For these processes we give local conditions, on the rates of change, that assure their comparability. We also analyze the case where one of the processes does not have any changes that involve several particles, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for their comparability. The proofs are based on the explicit construction of an order-preserving Markovian coupling. We show the applicability of our results by studying the stochastic comparison of infinite-station Jackson networks and batch-arrival, batch-service, and assemble-transfer queueing networks.

The IFR property of the stochastic process governing a one-component system supported by an inactive standby and a repair facility when the lifetime of one component and the repair time of the other component are dependent, is established. We solve the problem of selecting repair rates to maximize the steady-state availability for given component failure rates when a lower bound for the MTBF and upper bounds for the steady-state expected number of repairs of the components per unit time and expected number of failures of the system per unit time are given.
