We study symmetric and antisymmetric tensor products of Hilbert-space operators, focusing on norms and spectra for some well-known classes favored by function-theoretic operator theorists. We pose many open questions that should interest the field.

In this paper, we mainly investigate the well-posedness of the four-order degenerate differential equation ($P_4$): $(Mu)''''(t) + \alpha (Lu)'''(t) + (Lu)''(t)$ $=\beta Au(t) + \gamma Bu'(t) + Gu'_t + Fu_t + f(t),\,( t\in [0,\,2\pi ])$ in periodic Lebesgue–Bochner spaces $L^p(\mathbb {T}; X)$ and periodic Besov spaces $B_{p,q}^s\;(\mathbb {T}; X)$, where $A$, $B$, $L$ and $M$ are closed linear operators on a Banach space $X$ such that $D(A)\cap D(B)\subset D(M)\cap D(L)$ and $\alpha,\,\beta,\,\gamma \in \mathbb {C}$, $G$ and $F$ are bounded linear operators from $L^p([-2\pi,\,0];X)$ (respectively $B_{p,q}^s([-2\pi,\,0];X)$) into $X$, $u_t(\cdot ) = u(t+\cdot )$ and $u'_t(\cdot ) = u'(t+\cdot )$ are defined on $[-2\pi,\,0]$ for $t\in [0,\, 2\pi ]$. We completely characterize the well-posedness of ($P_4$) in the above two function spaces by using known operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorems.

By defining and applying the restricted topology, we have investigated certain connections between the boundary spectrum, the exponential spectrum, the topological boundary of the spectrum and the connected hull of the spectrum (see Mouton and Harte [‘Linking the boundary and exponential spectra via the restricted topology’, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 454 (2017), 730–745]). We now solve a remaining problem regarding the restricted connected hull.

We study a class of left-invertible operators which we call weakly concave operators. It includes the class of concave operators and some subclasses of expansive strict $m$-isometries with $m > 2$. We prove a Wold-type decomposition for weakly concave operators. We also obtain a Berger–Shaw-type theorem for analytic finitely cyclic weakly concave operators. The proofs of these results rely heavily on a spectral dichotomy for left-invertible operators. It provides a fairly close relationship, written in terms of the reciprocal automorphism of the Riemann sphere, between the spectra of a left-invertible operator and any of its left inverses. We further place the class of weakly concave operators, as the term $\mathcal {A}_1$, in the chain $\mathcal {A}_0 \subseteq \mathcal {A}_1 \subseteq \ldots \subseteq \mathcal {A}_{\infty }$ of collections of left-invertible operators. We show that most of the aforementioned results can be proved for members of these classes. Subtleties arise depending on whether the index $k$ of the class $\mathcal {A}_k$ is finite or not. In particular, a Berger–Shaw-type theorem fails to be true for members of $\mathcal {A}_{\infty }$. This discrepancy is better revealed in the context of $C^*$- and $W^*$-algebras.

We present here a multiplicative version of the classical Kowalski–Słodkowski theorem, which identifies the characters among the collection of all functionals on a complex and unital Banach algebra A. In particular, we show that, if A is a $C^\star $-algebra, and if $\phi :A\to \mathbb C $ is a continuous function satisfying $ \phi (x)\phi (y) \in \sigma (xy) $ for all $x,y\in A$ (where $\sigma $ denotes the spectrum), then either $\phi $ is a character of A or $-\phi $ is a character of A.

Using the $H^{\infty }$-functional calculus for quaternionic operators, we show how to generate the fractional powers of some densely defined differential quaternionic operators of order $m\geq 1$, acting on the right linear quaternionic Hilbert space $L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb {C}\otimes \mathbb {H})$. For any $r\in [0,1]$ we give an example of a rigid operator whose spectrum is the annulus $\{\lambda\in \mathbb{C} : r \le |\lambda| \le 1 \} $ . In particular, when $r=0$ this operator is rigid and non-invertible, and when $r\in {\kern1pt}] 0,1 [ $ this operator is invertible but its inverse is not rigid. This answers two questions of Costakis, Manoussos and Parissis [Recurrent linear operators. Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 8 (2014), 1601–1643].

Let A and $\tilde A$ be unbounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. We consider the following problem. Let the spectrum of A lie in some horizontal strip. In which strip does the spectrum of $\tilde A$ lie, if A and $\tilde A$ are sufficiently ‘close’? We derive a sharp bound for the strip containing the spectrum of $\tilde A$ , assuming that $\tilde A-A$ is a bounded operator and A has a bounded Hermitian component. We also discuss applications of our results to regular matrix differential operators.

In this paper, we study the principal spectral theory of age-structured models with random diffusion. First, we provide an equivalent characteristic for the principal eigenvalue, the strong maximum principle and a positive strict super-solution. Then, we use the result to investigate the effects of diffusion rate on the principal eigenvalue. Finally, we study how the principal eigenvalue affects the global dynamics of the KPP model and verify that the principal eigenvalue being zero is a critical value.

In this article, we study some Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators with a polynomial potential $V(q)$ of degree greater than two having quadratic limiting behaviour. This work provides an accurate global subelliptic estimate for Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators under some conditions imposed on the potential.

It is shown that Jamison sequences, introduced in 2007 by Badea and Grivaux, arise naturally in the study of topological groups with no small subgroups, of Banach or normed algebra elements whose powers are close to identity along subsequences, and in characterizations of (self-adjoint) positive operators by the accretiveness of some of their powers. The common core of these results is a description of those sequences for which non-identity elements in Lie groups or normed algebras escape an arbitrary small neighborhood of the identity in a number of steps belonging to the given sequence. Several spectral characterizations of Jamison sequences are given, and other related results are proved.

Let ${\mathcal{A}}$ be a complex unital Banach algebra, let $a$ be an element in it and let $0<\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}<1$. In this article, we study the upper and lower hemicontinuity and joint continuity of the condition spectrum and its level set maps in appropriate settings. We emphasize that the empty interior of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$-level set of a condition spectrum at a given $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716},a)$ plays a pivotal role in the continuity of the required maps at that point. Further, uniform continuity of the condition spectrum map is obtained in the domain of normal matrices.

By using methods of subordinacy theory, we study packing continuity properties of spectral measures of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators acting on the whole line. Then we apply these methods to Sturmian operators with rotation numbers of quasibounded density to show that they have purely $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$-packing continuous spectrum. A dimensional stability result is also mentioned.

In this paper, we characterize linear maps on matrix spaces that preserve matrices of local spectral radius zero at some fixed nonzero vector.

We find an explicit expression for the zeta-regularized determinant of (the Friedrichs extensions of) the Laplacians on a compact Riemann surface of genus one with conformal metric of curvature $1$ having a single conical singularity of angle $4\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$.

We consider a linear operator pencil with complex parameter mapping one Hilbert space onto another. It is known that the resolvent is analytic in an open annular region of the complex plane centred at the origin if and only if the coefficients of the Laurent series satisfy a doubly-infinite set of left and right fundamental equations and are suitably bounded. If the resolvent has an isolated singularity at the origin we propose a recursive orthogonal decomposition of the domain and range spaces that enables us to construct the key nonorthogonal projections that separate the singular and regular components of the resolvent and subsequently allows us to find a formula for the basic solution to the fundamental equations. We show that each Laurent series coefficient in the singular part of the resolvent can be approximated by a weakly convergent sequence of finite-dimensional matrix operators and we show how our analysis can be extended to find a global expression for the resolvent of a linear pencil in the case where the resolvent has only a finite number of isolated singularities.

In this paper, by using operator-valued ${\dot{C}}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$-Fourier multiplier results on vector-valued Hölder continuous function spaces, we give a characterization of the $C^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$-well-posedness for the third order differential equations $au^{\prime \prime \prime }(t)+u^{\prime \prime }(t)=Au(t)+Bu^{\prime }(t)+f(t)$, ($t\in \mathbb{R}$), where $A,B$ are closed linear operators on a Banach space $X$ such that $D(A)\subset D(B)$, $a\in \mathbb{C}$ and $0<\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}<1$.

Harte (1982, Math. Z.179, 431–436) initiated the study of Fredholm theory relative to a unital homomorphism T: A → B between unital Banach algebras A and B based on the following notions: an element a ∈ A is called Fredholm if 0 is not in the spectrum of Ta, while a is Weyl (Browder) if there exist (commuting) elements b and c in A with a = b + c such that 0 is not in the spectrum of b and c is in the null space of T. We introduce and investigate the concepts of r-Fredholm, r-Weyl and r-Browder elements, where 0 in these definitions is replaced by the spectral radii of a and b, respectively.
