This paper studies the spatio-temporal dynamics of a diffusive plant-sulphide model with toxicity delay. More specifically, the effects of discrete delay and distributed delay on the dynamics are explored, respectively. The deep analysis of eigenvalues indicates that both diffusion and delay can induce Hopf bifurcations. The normal form theory is used to set up an exact formula that determines the properties of Hopf bifurcation in a diffusive plant-sulphide model. A sufficiently small discrete delay does not affect the stability and a sufficiently large discrete delay destabilizes the system. Nonetheless, a sufficiently small or large distributed delay does not affect the stability. Both delays cause instability by inducing Hopf bifurcation rather than Turing bifurcation.

Analytic rotated vector fields have four significant properties: as the rotated parameter $\alpha$ changes, the amplitude of each stable (or unstable) limit cycle varies monotonically, each semi-stable limit cycle bifurcates at most two limit cycles, the isolated homoclinic loop (if exists) disappears while a unique limit cycle with the same stability arises or no closed orbits arise oppositely, and a unique limit cycle arises near the weak focus (if exists). In this paper, we prove that the four properties remain true for a rotated family of generalized Liénard systems having finitely many switching lines. Furthermore, we discuss variational exponent and use it to formulate multiplicity of limit cycles. Then we apply our results to give exact number of limit cycles to a continuous piecewise linear system with three zones and answer to a question on the maximum number of limit cycles in an SD oscillator.

In this paper, we analyse Turing instability and bifurcations in a host–parasitoid model with nonlocal effect. For a ordinary differential equation model, we provide some preliminary analysis on Hopf bifurcation. For a reaction–diffusion model with local intraspecific prey competition, we first explore the Turing instability of spatially homogeneous steady states. Next, we show that the model can undergo Hopf bifurcation and Turing–Hopf bifurcation, and find that a pair of spatially nonhomogeneous periodic solutions is stable for a (8,0)-mode Turing–Hopf bifurcation and unstable for a (3,0)-mode Turing–Hopf bifurcation. For a reaction–diffusion model with nonlocal intraspecific prey competition, we study the existence of the Hopf bifurcation, double-Hopf bifurcation, Turing bifurcation, and Turing–Hopf bifurcation successively, and find that a spatially nonhomogeneous quasi-periodic solution is unstable for a (0,1)-mode double-Hopf bifurcation. Our results indicate that the model exhibits complex pattern formations, including transient states, monostability, bistability, and tristability. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to illustrate complex dynamics and verify our theoretical results.

This research studies the robustness of permanence and the continuous dependence of the stationary distribution on the parameters for a stochastic predator–prey model with Beddington–DeAngelis functional response. We show that if the model is extinct (resp. permanent) for a parameter, it is still extinct (resp. permanent) in a neighbourhood of this parameter. In the case of extinction, the Lyapunov exponent of predator quantity is negative and the prey quantity converges almost to the saturated situation, where the predator is absent at an exponential rate. Under the condition of permanence, the unique stationary distribution converges weakly to the degenerate measure concentrated at the unique limit cycle or at the globally asymptotic equilibrium when the diffusion term tends to 0.

We work with polynomial three-dimensional rigid differential systems. Using the Lyapunov constants, we obtain lower bounds for the cyclicity of the known rigid centres on their centre manifolds. Moreover, we obtain an example of a quadratic rigid centre from which is possible to bifurcate 13 limit cycles, which is a new lower bound for three-dimensional quadratic systems.

In 1991, Chicone and Jacobs showed the equivalence between the computation of the first-order Taylor developments of the Lyapunov constants and the developments of the first Melnikov function near a non-degenerate monodromic equilibrium point, in the study of limit cycles of small-amplitude bifurcating from a quadratic centre. We show that their proof is also valid for polynomial vector fields of any degree. This equivalence is used to provide a new lower bound for the local cyclicity of degree six polynomial vector fields, so $\mathcal {M}(6) \geq 44$. Moreover, we extend this equivalence to the piecewise polynomial class. Finally, we prove that $\mathcal {M}^{c}_{p}(4) \geq 43$ and $\mathcal {M}^{c}_{p}(5) \geq 65.$

This work investigates the existence and bifurcation structure of multi-pulse steady-state solutions to bistable lattice dynamical systems. Such solutions are characterized by multiple compact disconnected regions where the solution resembles one of the bistable states and resembles another trivial bistable state outside of these compact sets. It is shown that the bifurcation curves of these multi-pulse solutions lie along closed and bounded curves (isolas), even when single-pulse solutions lie along unbounded curves. These results are applied to a discrete Nagumo differential equation and we show that the hypotheses of this work can be confirmed analytically near the anti-continuum limit. Results are demonstrated with a number of numerical investigations.

In aquatic microbial systems, high-magnitude variations in abundance, such as sudden blooms alternating with comparatively long periods of very low abundance (“apparent disappearance”), are relatively common. We suggest that in order for this to occur, such variations in abundance in microbial systems and, in particular, the apparent disappearance of species do not require seasonal or periodic forcing of any kind or external factors of any other nature. Instead, such variations can be caused by internal factors and, in particular, by bacteria–phage interaction. Specifically, we suggest that the variations in abundance and the apparent disappearance phenomenon can be a result of phage infection and the lysis of infected bacteria. To illustrate this idea, we consider a reasonably simple mathematical model of bacteria–phage interaction based on the model suggested by Beretta and Kuang, which assumes neither periodic forcing nor action of other external factors. The model admits a loss of stability via Andronov–Hopf bifurcation and exhibits dynamics which explains the phenomenon. These properties of the model are especially distinctive for spatially nonhomogeneous biosystems as well as biosystems with some sort of cooperation or community effects.

Collision of equilibria with a splitting manifold has been locally studied, but might also be a contributing factor to global bifurcations. In particular, a boundary collision can be coincident with collision of a virtual equilibrium with a periodic orbit, giving an analogue to a homoclinic bifurcation. This type of bifurcation is demonstrated in a non-smooth climate application. Here, we describe the non-smooth bifurcation structure, as well as the smooth bifurcation structure for which the non-smooth homoclinic bifurcation is a limiting case.

A nonlinear mathematical model for innovation diffusion is proposed. The system of ordinary differential equations incorporates variable external influences (the cumulative density of marketing efforts), variable internal influences (the cumulative density of word of mouth) and a logistically growing human population (the variable potential consumers). The change in population density is due to various demographic processes such as intrinsic growth rate, emigration, death rate etc. Thus the problem involves two dynamic variables viz. a non-adopter population density and an adopter population density. The model is analysed qualitatively using the stability theory of differential equations, with the help of the corresponding characteristic equation of the system. The interior equilibrium point can be stable for all time delays to a critical value, beyond which the system becomes unstable and a Hopf bifurcation occurs at a second critical value. Employing normal form theory and a centre manifold theorem applicable to functional differential equations, we derive some explicit formulas determining the stability, the direction and other properties of the bifurcating periodic solutions. Our numerical simulations show that the system behaviour can become extremely complicated as the time delay increases, with a stable interior equilibrium point leading to a limit cycle with one local maximum and minimum per cycle (Hopf bifurcation), then limit cycles with more local maxima and minima per cycle, and finally chaotic solutions.

We consider the standard action of the dihedral group $\bf{D}_n$ of order $2n$ on $\bf{C}$. This representation is absolutely irreducible and so the corresponding Hopf bifurcation occurs on $\bf{C} \oplus \bf{C}$. Golubitsky and Stewart (Hopf bifurcation with dihedral group symmetry: Coupled nonlinear oscillators. In: Multiparameter Bifurcation Series, M. Golubitsky and J. Guckenheimer, eds., Contemporary Mathematics 46, Am. Math. Soc., Providence, R.I. 1986, 131–173) and van Gils and Valkering (Hopf bifurcation and symmetry: standing and travelling waves in a circular chain. Japan J. Appl. Math.3, 207–222, 1986) prove the generic existence of three branches of periodic solutions, up to conjugacy, in systems of ordinary differential equations with $\bf{D}_n$-symmetry, depending on one real parameter, that present Hopf bifurcation. These solutions are found by using the Equivariant Hopf Theorem. We prove that generically, when $n\neq 4$ and assuming Birkhoff normal form, these are the only branches of periodic solutions that bifurcate from the trivial solution.

An analog of the Hopf bifurcation theorem is proved for implicit neutral functional differential equations of the form F(xt, D′(xt, α), α) = 0. The proof is based on the method of S1-degree of convex-valued mappings. Examples illustrating the theorem are provided.

The local Hopf Bifurcation theorem is extended to implicit differential equations in Rn, of the form ẋ = f(x,ẋ, α), which are not solvable for the variable ẋ. The proof uses the S1 -degree of convex-valued mappings. An example of an implicit differential equation in R3 to which the presented theorem applies is provided.
