White mustard (Brassica hirta Moench) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.), thinned to uniform stands, varied in a three-year study in their effects on peas depending on weed population, duration of competition, relative time of pea and weed emergence, and year to year variations in seasonal rainfall. Full-season competition from 3 mustard plants per square foot reduced pea stands 0 to 25%, pea vine weight 39 to 71%, and yields of shelled peas 0 to 64%, during the three years. In one direct comparison, 27 foxtail plants per square foot caused reductions in peas comparable to those caused by 3 mustard plants. When mustard emerged 3 days before peas, fresh weight of pea vines was reduced 54 percent; but when mustard emerged 4 days after peas, only 17 percent.

The relative growth rates of peas, Brassica hirta, B. Kaber, Amaranthus retroflexus, Polygonum Persicaria, Setaria italica, S. viridis, S. glauca, and Echinochloa crusgalli grown without intra- and inter-species competition suggest that the Brassica species would be the more severe competitors with peas and that weed competition usually would be more severe in late-seeded peas.

The potassium salt of 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) was applied as soil, foliar, and soil plus foliar treatments to defoliated and non-defoliated huisache (Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd) grown in the greenhouse. Soil applications of ⅛ lb/A were more effective than foliar treatments. However, soil or foliar applications at ½ lb/A were lethal on non-defoliated plants. Defoliated plants treated with ½ lb/A showed considerable regrowth, indicating that leaves were important for absorption and movement of the herbicide into stem and root tissues. Plants treated with ¼ lb/A of picloram and defoliated after 0, 4, 10, and 24 hr indicated that 24 hr were necessary to obtain maximum herbicidal effectiveness.

Picloram content was determined in the leaves, upper stem, lower stem, and roots by gas chromatographic analysis, 3, 10, and 30 days after treatment. Most of the picloram applied to foliage was found in and on the leaves 30 days after treatment. The upper stem contained several times more picloram than the lower stem. No detectable amounts of picloram were found in the leaves and upper stem 3 and 30 days after soil treatment. The concentration of picloram in roots from soil applications was similar to foliar treatments. Absorption and movement studies showed that a period of 24 hr was required to move lethal amounts of picloram into stem and root tissues of huisache after foliar treatments.

A mathematical model describing the behavior of 14C-haloxyfop {2-[4-[(3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} and its methyl and ethoxyethyl esters on yellow foxtail [Seteria glauca (L.) Beauv. #3 SETLU] has been developed to evaluate volatility, penetration, ester transformation, metabolism, and transport of the chemical in the plant system. The effects of crop oil concentrate, temperature, structure of the molecule, and the addition of bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] to the application solution on the kinetic rate constants have been studied. Crop oil concentrate was found to dramatically increase penetration at an optimal level of approximately 0.3% (v/v). Significant increases in rate constants were observed at higher temperatures. Esters were rapidly converted to the acid in the plant with conversion of the ethoxyethyl ester being approximately twice as fast as the methyl ester. Subsequent metabolism of the acid proceeded at a moderate rate which was independent of the original ester form of the molecule. All kinetic processes were described by first-order rate constants with the exception of transport which appeared to slow a few hours after application even though acid levels in the plant were high. When bentazon was applied in combination with haloxyfop-methyl, penetration of the ester was somewhat inhibited, while transport of radioactivity associated with the molecule to other plant parts was dramatically reduced.

A field study was made on the competitive effect of quackgrass (Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.) on corn for the nutrients N, P, and K during 1962 and 1963. Quackgrass competition drastically reduced corn height and yield and delayed maturity. High levels of fertilization did not overcome the effects of quackgrass competition. The annual uptake by quackgrass during the growing seasons of 1962 and 1963 was 105, 15 and 60 lb/A of N, P, and K, respectively. Quackgrass shoots harvested at maturity in mid-July had taken up 55, 45, and 68% of the total N, P, and K, respectively, that was removed throughout the season by quackgrass shoots plus rhizomes. It appeared that the early season uptake of N and K by quackgrass may have contributed to, but was not solely responsible for, the reduction in corn height and yield and delayed maturity noted later in the season.

Four days after treatment of corn (Zea mays L. 'SX111′) seedlings with BAS 9052 OH {2 - [1-(ethoxyimino) butyl] - 5 - [2 - (ethylthio) - propyl] - 3 - hydroxy - 2 - cyclohexene-1 - one} growth was inhibited and a purple color developed in the leaves. Low dosages (0.02 and 0.04 kg/ha) caused bleaching of the newly expanding leaves. Dosages higher than 0.04 kg/ha caused significant reductions in length and fresh and dry weights of both shoots and roots. Anthocyanin and total - sugar content increased, whereas chlorophyll accumulation and respiratory activity were reduced by herbicide treatment. BAS 9052 OH did not alter the mitotic index of corn root tips, but induced binucleate cells by preventing cell-plate and -wall formation. In some cells, the daughter nuclei were reoriented with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cells, and in others, the nuclei failed to migrate to the poles. These physiological and cytological effects of BAS 9052 OH on corn seedlings may be responsible for the phytotoxic action of the herbicide on grasses.

Foliar penetration of 14 C-difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1-H-pyrazolium), in the presence of a surfactant, into both wild oat (Avena fatua L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘Conquest’), was rapid and continued at a nearly constant rate for 72 hr, the maximum time period studied; 93 and 84% of the applied dose was absorbed by the leaves of wild oat and barley, respectively. Added surfactants at 0.01% to 0.3% and high relative. humidity (RH) greatly enhanced the penetration of the herbicide into wild oat. An increase in temperature from 10 to 30 C resulted in a large increase in penetration. Commercial formulations of bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxy-benzonitrile) + MCPA {[(4-chloro-O-tolyl)oxy] acetic acid} (1:1, w/w), 2,4-D[(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] ester and barban (4-chloro-2-butynyl m-chlorocarbanilate) markedly increased the penetration of 14C-difenzoquat into wild oat. Amine formulation of 2,4-D, on the other hand, had no effect on penetration. Foliarly-applied 14 C-difenzoquat rapidly translocated mainly in the acropetal direction. Most of the absorbed 14C, however, was accumulated in the treated area and a few centimeters above the treated area. There was some basipetal movement, and 24 hr after treatment 14C was detectable in the roots. Root uptake of 14C-difenzoquat was very rapid, but upward movement of 14C was slight, and even 24 hr after treatment most of it was retained by the roots. Chromatographic analysis of plant extracts up to 15 days after treatment with 14C-difenzoquat revealed no evidence of difenzoquat metabolism by wild oat, barley, and wheat (Triticum vulgare L. ‘Thatcher’). The selective action of difenzoquat in wild oat and barley cannot be accounted for by differences in its foliar penetration, translocation, or metabolism in these species.

The response of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. 'Superior’) to glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] at rates between 0.28 and 2.24 kg ae/ha was determined in four environments: 24/13 or 13/4 C temperature regimes with light levels of 650 ± 53 or 320 ± 45 μE · m−2 · S−1. Light level did not affect phytotoxicity ratings or shoot fresh weight following glyphosate application. Greater phytotoxicity and reduced fresh weight accumulation were observed from glyphosate at rates above 0.56 kg/ha in a high-temperature regime than for comparable plants grown at low temperature. Studies of 14C-glyphosate uptake and translocation indicated that the differences in phytotoxicity were due to less glyphosate absorption at low temperature and not a shift in distribution patterns within the plant.

There are two species of cultivated rice in the world—Oryza sativa L. from Asia and Oryza glaberrima Steud. from Africa. The former was domesticated from the wild progenitor Oryza rufipogon Griff. and the latter from the African wild rice species Oryza barthii A. Shiv. The first known center of rice cultivation in China generated the O. sativa subspecies japonica. The indica subspecies arose from the second center of domestication in the Ganges River plains of India. Variants of domesticated lines and the continuous hybridization between cultivated varieties and the wild progenitor(s) resulted in weedy rice types. Some weedy types resemble the wild ancestor, but the majority of weedy rices today bear close resemblance to cultivated rice. Weedy rice accompanies rice culture and has increased in occurrence with the global shift in rice establishment from transplanting to direct-seeded or dry-drill-seeded rice. Weedy rice (Oryza spp.) is the most difficult weed to control in rice, causing as much as 90% yield loss or abandonment of severely infested fields. The gene flow continuum between cultivar and weedy rice or wild relative, crop de-domestication, and regionalized adaptation have resulted in a myriad of weedy rice types. The complex lineage of weedy rice has resulted in confusion of weedy rice nomenclature. Two names are generally used for weedy rice—Oryza sativa L. and Oryza sativa f. spontanea. Genomic data show that O. sativa L. applies to weedy rice populations derived from cultivated O. sativa, whereas O. sativa f. spontanea applies only to weedy types that primarily descended from O. rufipogon. Neither of these names applies to African weedy rice, which is of African wild rice or O. glaberrima lineage. Therefore, unless the lineage of the weedy population in question is known, the proper name to use is the generalized name Oryza spp.

Assessing belowground plant competition is complex because it is very difficult to separate weed and crop roots from each other by physical methods. Alternative techniques for separating crop and weed roots from each other are needed. This article introduces a stable isotope method that can quantify the amounts of roots of rice and barnyardgrass intermixed in flooded field soils. It relies on the biological principle that rice, a C3 (photosynthetic pathway) species, discriminates more effectively than barnyardgrass, a C4 species, against a relatively rare isotopic form (13C) of CO2. This results in different 13C: 12C isotope ratios (expressed as δ13C) in root tissues of the two species. δ13C values for monoculture barnyardgrass and rice grown in a standard flood-irrigated system were highly stable over 4 crop-years, averaging −13.12 ± 0.80 (SD) and −28.5 ± 0.11 (SD)‰, respectively, based on analysis by an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Standard concentration curves relating measured δ13C values to set proportions of rice:barnyardgrass root biomass were described by linear regressions, typically with r2 values of 0.96 or greater. Quantities of intermixed rice and barnyardgrass roots sampled 0 to 5 cm deep from soil between rice rows were estimated by extrapolation from standard curves based on δ13C values. About 50% more barnyardgrass root tissue was detected in plots of Lemont long-grain rice than in weed-suppressive PI 312777 indica rice, demonstrating the feasibility of using this stable carbon isotope method in flooded rice systems.

The single-celled green alga Chlamydomonas eugametos was found to be well suited for detecting growth inhibitor activity of chemicals. Tests consisted of solubilizing technical grade compounds in 20-ml aliquots of a 1 × 105 cells/ml zoospore culture. Commercially available growth inhibitor herbicides significantly inhibited synchronous cell population increases within 48 h at concentrations ranging from 1 × 10−4 to 1 × 10−7M. Examples of compounds that inhibited Chlamydomonas more than 50% were butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) and diallate [S-(2,3-dichloroallyl)diisopropylthiocarbamate] at 1 × 10−4M, CDEC [2 chloroallyl diethyldithiocarbamate] and propham (isopropyl carbanilate) at 1 × 10−5M, alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] and trifluralin [α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine] at 1 × 10−6 M, and bifenox [methyl 5-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-nitrobenzoate] at 1 × 10−7M. Ethanol, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), or acetone can be used to solubilize herbicides in the aqueous medium. DMSO and ethanol are not detrimental to the cells if the concentration is kept at 1% v/v or less.

The translocation and root exudation of leaf-applied sublethal concentrations of 14C-labeled clopyralid (3,6-dichloropicolinic acid) and 14C-labeled 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] were compared in Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. var. horridum Wimm. and Grab. ♯ CIRAR] at the rosette stage over a period of 9 days. The rate of absorption and export of 14C out of the treated leaf was similar for both herbicides. However, the distribution of the herbicides throughout the plant was very different. After 9 days, 15 vs. 3% of the applied 14C from 14C-clopyralid vs. 14C-2,4-D, respectively, was isolated from the foliage of the treated leaf. In the roots, twice as much 14C was recovered from the 14C-clopyralid treatments as from the 14C-2,4-D treatment at all sampling times, with 33 vs. 15% being recovered, respectively, after 9 days. When the plants were grown hydroponically, 20% of the 14C-clopyralid vs. 48% of the 14C-2,4-D was recovered in the nutrient solution during a 9-day period. No metabolites of either herbicide were recovered from the foliage, root system, or nutrient solution. Large differences in translocation of these herbicides may account for the unequal toxicity to young Canada thistle plants.

A simple and quick method is described for identifying biotypes of common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), and smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.) that are resistant or susceptible to triazine herbicides. Leaf discs (3 mm diam) from the tested plants were vacuum infiltrated with a phosphate medium and exposed to a 3-klux light source. When 1.0 × 10−5M and higher levels of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) were present, the leaf discs from susceptible biotypes failed to float to the surface, whereas the leaf discs from resistant biotypes floated within 1 h. The urea herbicide, fluometuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)urea] inhibited the floating of leaf discs from both the triazine-susceptible and triazine-resistant biotypes. This method can be used to evaluate large numbers of plants to determine if they are resistant or susceptible to triazines without destroying the plants or preventing seed production.

Studies were conducted to evaluate weed management programs in nontransgenic, bromoxynil-resistant, and glyphosate-resistant cotton in nontilled and tilled environments. Tillage did not affect weed control provided by herbicides. Early-season stunting in nontilled cotton was 3% regardless of the herbicide system and was no longer evident at midseason. Cotton yield was 10 to 15% greater, on an average, under tilled conditions than that under nontilled conditions. Excellent (> 90%) common lambsquarters, entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, jimsonweed, pitted morningglory, prickly sida, tall morningglory, and velvetleaf control was achieved with treatments containing pyrithiobac, bromoxynil, and glyphosate. Preemergence (PRE) or postemergence-directed (PD) herbicide inputs were necessary for adequate large crabgrass and goosegrass control. Bromoxynil and pyrithiobac postemergence did not control sicklepod unless supplemented with MSMA and followed by a late-postdirected treatment of cyanazine plus MSMA. Treatments that included glyphosate controlled sicklepod regardless of the late-PD treatment. Economic returns were at least $930 ha−1 and not different from the higher yielding programs in nontransgenic cotton when fluometuron applied PRE was included in the bromoxynil programs. Late-season weed control was usually greater than 90% from glyphosate programs, and net returns from glyphosate programs were as high or higher than the net returns from programs that used midseason treatments of bromoxynil, pyrithiobac, or fluometuron plus MSMA.

Agricultural equipment can disperse weed seeds over large distances. Efforts to minimize or prevent equipment-mediated dispersal should be a key component in any integrated weed management plan. Several experiments were initiated in commercial wild blueberry fields to examine the potential impact of harvesting equipment on weed seed dispersal within and between blueberry fields. Seed loads were examined on harvesting equipment between fields and results suggest that harvesting equipment is a major vector of seed dispersal. Seed loads were 397,000 in 2006 and 194,000 in 2007. Of all seeds located on the harvester, 66 to 79% were located on the belts or affiliated components. In 2006, a second experiment was established to examine within-field seed dispersal. A sampling grid was established over multiple distinct poverty oatgrass patches with seed heads at 44% of all sampling points. Following harvest, seeds were located at 67% of all sampling points. In 2006 and 2007, short-distance secondary dispersal of poverty oatgrass by harvesting equipment was measured. The relationship between distance from patch perimeter and seeds per unit area on the side approached by harvesting equipment and the far side of the patch was adequately modeled with an exponential decay model. Secondary dispersal within blueberry fields by harvesting equipment is inevitable. Dispersal may be reduced by avoiding dense weed patches, or altering harvest timing. Periodic cleaning of harvesting equipment between fields will help prevent the spread of weed seed.

Because weed eradication programs commonly take 10 or more years to complete, there is a need to evaluate progress toward the eradication objective. We present a simple model, based on information that is readily obtainable, that assesses conformity to the delimitation and extirpation criteria for eradication. It is applied to the program currently targeting the annual parasitic weed, branched broomrape, in South Australia. The model consists of delimitation and extirpation (E) measures plotted against each other to form an ‘eradograph.’ Deviations from the ‘ideal’ eradograph plot can inform tactical responses, e.g., increases in survey and/or control effort. Infestations progress from the active phase to the monitoring phase when no plants have been detected for at least 12 mo. They revert to the active phase upon further detection of plants. We summarize this process for the invasion as a whole in a state-and-transition model. Using this model we demonstrate that the invasion is unlikely to be delimited unless the amount of newly detected infested area decreases, on average, by at least 50% per annum. As a result of control activities implemented, on average approximately 70% (range, 44 to 86%) of active infestations progressed to the monitoring phase in the year following their detection. Simulations suggest that increasing this rate of transition will not increase E to a significant extent. The rate of reversion of infestations from the monitoring phase to the active phase decreased logarithmically with time since last detection, but it is likely that lower rates of reversion would accelerate the trend toward extirpation. Program performance with respect to the delimitation criterion has been variable; performance with respect to the extirpation criterion would be improved considerably by the development and application of cost-effective methods for eliminating branched broomrape soil seed populations.

Tribenuron-methyl has been used widely for the last 15 yr to control white mustard in cereal crops from southern Spain. Since 2007, several cases of tribenuron-methyl resistance have been reported in wheat fields. Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to characterize the mechanism of suspected tribenuron-methyl resistance in a white mustard biotype (hereafter AR16) from Malaga (southern Spain). Under greenhouse conditions, the dose (g ai ha−1) inhibiting fresh weight by 50% (ED50) was 5.20 and 0.57 for the AR16 and AR3 (known susceptible) biotypes, respectively. With the use of 14C-tribenuron-methyl, absorption and translocation from treated leaves were similar between biotypes. Thin-layer chromatography indicated foliar metabolism of tribenuron-methyl was low in both R and S biotypes. Assays on the binding affinity of tribenuron-methyl on acetolactate synthase (ALS) revealed enzyme activity was reduced by 50% (I50 value) at 638.7 and 0.23 nM for the AR16 and AR3 biotypes, respectively. This resulted in 2,777-fold greater resistance to tribenuron-methyl for the AR16 compared to AR3 biotype. Sequencing the gene encoding ALS, a proline/serine amino-acid substitution, was detected in position 197 of the A domain. Based on these results, it is concluded that tribenuron-methyl resistance in the AR16 biotype is due to a target-site mutation in the ALS enzyme, resulting in a lack of affinity to tribenuron-methyl.

Time-dependent adsorption of imazethapyr was studied in the laboratory on a sandy loam soil at 16% moisture for 30 d. Soil pH was adjusted to 4.5 to 6.8. Concentration of imazethapyr in soil water declined rapidly within the first day of incubation for all soil pH levels, indicating rapid initial adsorption. However, the concentration of imazethapyr in the soil water continued to decline slowly over time. Even at pH 6.8, where batch equilibrium studies at high solution to soil ratios indicated low adsorption, only 22% of the applied imazethapyr was in solution 10 d after treatment (DAT), and 10% 30 DAT. Soil column mobility studies also showed a rapid decline in mobility as time after application increased. The amount of imazethapyr remaining in soil columns rapidly increased within 4 to 10 DAT, even at pH 7.8, where low adsorption is predicted. Imazethapyr was stable during the time of these experiments, so degradation to less soluble or more tightly bound products is not the reason for the increased adsorption. These results indicate that batch equilibrium studies that use slurries with high solution to soil ratios (often 2:1 or higher) and short equilibration times may not accurately predict mobility of acidic herbicides in the field, where moisture content is lower.

Huisache [Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd. # ACAFA] and Mexican palo-verde (Parkinsonia aculeata L. # PAKAC) are native woody legumes that often occur together on rangelands of southern Texas and northern Mexico. Huisache produces a profusion of orange-yellow flowers during February or March giving it a conspicuous golden appearance. Mexican palo-verde produces a heavy bloom of yellow flowers in mid-April or early May giving it a yellow-green coloration. Plant canopy light reflectance measurements of flowering huisache showed that its reflectance at the 0.55- and 0.65-μm visible wavelengths was significantly higher than that of Mexican palo-verde in the vegetative stage and four other associated plant species or mixture of species. Conversely, reflectance measurements of flowering Mexican palo-verde showed that its reflectance at the 0.55-μm visible wavelength was significantly higher than that of huisache in the vegetative stage and the same four associated plant species or mixtures of species. Flowering huisache had a golden color on conventional color (0.40-to 0.70-μm) aerial photos that made it distinguishable from other plant species, whereas flowering Mexican palo-verde had a pink image on color-infrared (0.50- to 0.90-μm) aerial photos. However, immature plants of both species cannot be detected using this technique. Computer-based image analyses of conventional color film positive transparencies showed that huisache infestations could be quantified from associated rangeland species. This technique can permit ‘percent land area infested’ estimates of mature huisache on rangelands. These results show that aerial photography may be a useful tool to detect and monitor the spread of huisache and Mexican palo-verde on rangelands, and to delineate areas needing control.

The effects of temperature and light on the dormancy of velvetleaf, common waterhemp, and giant foxtail seeds were studied under controlled growth chamber conditions. Seeds were either kept chilled at 4 C for 12 wk under wet conditions or nonchilled at 4 C in dry storage. Then, seeds were germinated under increasing and decreasing temperatures and under continuous red light (R) and far-red light (FR). In addition, chilled and nonchilled seeds were germinated in the dark after being exposed to alternating R and FR flashes. Velvetleaf germination was increased by exposure to high temperatures (36 C) immediately after exposure to low temperatures (4 C), but light had no effect. Chilling increased common waterhemp seed germination and sensitivity to light and temperature. R promoted common waterhemp seed germination, whereas FR inhibited germination and maintained dormancy. In addition, the effect of light was reversible. Therefore, common waterhemp dormancy was phytochrome regulated. However, high temperatures (36 C) promoted the germination of chilled seeds, even when exposed to FR. The germination of chilled giant foxtail seeds was reduced by FR. Giant foxtail seed dormancy was partially phytochrome regulated, but dormancy regulation was more dependent on mean temperature.

Experiments were conducted to determine whether differences in sensitivity of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) to 14C-picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid) and 14C-clopyralid (3,6-dichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid) can be attributed to differences in absorption, translocation, or metabolism of the herbicides. Within 24 h, more than 97% of the radioactivity from picloram or clopyralid was absorbed by the foliage of both plant species. Acropetal transport of both herbicides was similar in the two plant species, with approximately 60% or more of the recovered radioactivity from picloram and clopyralid treatments moving acropetally out of the treated leaf 144 h after application. Less than 6% of the 14C-label from either herbicide treatment moved basipetally in both species. Therefore, differences in absorption and translocation did not account for intra- or inter-species sensitivity differences to the two herbicides. Significantly more 14C-picloram and 14C-clopyralid was converted to water-soluble metabolites in rapeseed than in sunflower plants. However, in rapeseed plants, the pattern of metabolism of both herbicides was similar, indicating that the difference between the metabolism of picloram and clopyralid did not account for the sensitivity difference within this species. It appears that only one picloram and clopyralid metabolite was formed in both plant species as determined by TLC. The metabolite of picloram or clopyralid was a water-soluble conjugate that yielded the carboxylic acid amide of the respective herbicide upon ammonolysis.
