The influence of soil organic matter on the initial and residual phytotoxicity of thirteen s-triazine herbicides was investigated in greenhouse experiments using three Horotiu sandy loam soils with organic matter levels of 9.8, 15.5, and 20.6%. The amount of herbicide required to reduce the growth of oats (Avena sativa L. ‘Mapua’) by 50% (GR50) when compared with the control was determined for each herbicide and each organic matter level. Results showed that the GR50 values for all herbicides were highly and positively correlated with the soil organic matter. In general, the phytotoxicity of compounds of high water solubility was less influenced by soil organic matter than those having low water solubility. The chloro-triazines persisted longer in soil than did the methoxy- or methylthio-triazines. Simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] and atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] were the most persistent of the chloro-triazines.

Field experiments were conducted during a 3-yr period to study the effects of three soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Hill’] row spacings, four periods of sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. # CASOB) competition, and timing of fungicide application for control of seed and foliar diseases of soybeans on soybean yields and growth of sicklepod Competition of sicklepod for 4 weeks reduced soybean yields in 2 of the 3 yr. Competition for the entire season significantly reduced the yield of soybeans regardless of row spacing. Average soybean yields were higher with 51-cm row spacings than with 102-cm row spacings regardless of fungicide treatment or period of sicklepod competition. Foliar applications of benomyl significantly increased soybean yields in only 1 of 3 yr. Sicklepod plants did not grow taller than soybeans until more than 96 days after emergence. Greatest rate of increase in weights of individual sicklepod plants and growth of axillary branches was in the period from 72 to 96 days after emergence. During this time, there was about an 8-fold increase in the number of leaves produced by sicklepod plants. The most rapid daily increase in height of sicklepod was in the period from 96 to 100 days after emergence when more than 50% of the total growth occurred. Height and weight of sicklepod plants were less when soybeans were grown in 25-cm row spacings than in 102-cm row spacings. No differences were noted in die internal microflora of soybean seed collected from fold plots with regard to the presence of sicklepod, duration of sicklepod interference, or timing of fungicide application.

The effects of quackgrass shoot populations shortly after emergence, and dry weight at harvest on yield of canola were determined in four field experiments conducted near Vegreville, Alberta in 1986 and 1988. A hyperbolic model described the data well in most cases and indicated little intraspecific quackgrass interference among quackgrass shoots until populations exceeded 200 shoots m−2. Magnitudes of predicted canola yield losses among experiments were close, even though quackgrass-free yields varied. A pooled hyperbolic equation, based on shoot density, predicted that an intermediate quackgrass infestation of 50 to 100 shoots m−2 would reduce canola yield by 18 to 32%. An economic threshold model based on the hyperbolic model provides a means of estimating when control of quackgrass with herbicides is economical.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate weed control systems in a conservation tillage rotation of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] – cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) – wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Herbicide systems included fall and spring/summer inputs of high and low intensity. Tillage regimes were no-till (NT) and reduced-till (RT) systems; the latter included fall primary tillage followed by spring stale seedbed planting. Both tillage systems utilized controlled traffic lanes and wide, raised beds. Effective johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] control required intense herbicide inputs at one or both application periods, i.e., in the fall and/or spring/summer. Grain sorghum and cotton yields for the most intense weed control system, which included high inputs in both the fall and spring/summer, were not superior to systems that included high inputs in only one of the two application periods. Seedling johnsongrass emergence occurred before spring planting in RT (but not in NT) in 2 of 3 yr, and control measures were ineffective. After 3 yr, the predominant weeds were johnsongrass and browntop panicum (Panicum fasciculatum Sw. # PANFA).

The trifoliate leaf of tolerant navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) retained less bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-(4)3H-one 2,2-dioxide] from foliar applications than the unifoliate leaf, or the leaves from susceptible cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.) and moderately susceptible black nightshade (Solarium nigrum L.) seedlings. The 14C from 14C-bentazon applied to the foliage of black nightshade moved throughout the entire plant. In cocklebur, the 14C moved throughout the treated leaf, whereas, in the trifoliate leaf of navy bean, very little acropetal movement occurred from the site of application. However, in the unifoliate leaf of navy bean, acropetal and basipetal movement of 14C from the leaf was observed. The species differed in the 14C-metabolites formed from 14C-bentazon 1 and 5 days after treatment. The rapid metabolism of bentazon in the trifoliate leaf of navy bean appears to be related to tolerance.

The performance of BAS 9052 {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)-butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)-propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} was evaluated when applied postemergence to rhizome and seedling johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Bragg’ and ‘Centennial’] when the soybeans had four or five trifoliate leaves (V3 to V4 stages) or when they had six to eight trifoliate leaves (V5 to V7 growth stages). The degree of weed control was more strongly associated with rainfall conditions than with the size of the johnsongrass. An exponential equation was used to describe the relationship of soybean seed yield to BAS 9052 rate. BAS 9052 applications of 0.28 kg ai/ha provided an estimated 98% of the potential soybean yield increase when rainfall was adequate but, 0.41 kg ai/ha was required when the plants were grown under moisture stress. Soybean yields were increased by 260 kg/ha when BAS 9052 was applied at the V3 to V4 compared to the V5 to V7 growth stage.

Effects of ethylene and KNO3 on the germination of dormant common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. # CHEAL) seed were studied under controlled environmental conditions. Ethylene, applied in the gaseous form or as an aqueous solution of ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid), was able to overcome the dormancy of over 70% of the seed. The optimum concentrations of ethylene and ethephon were 10 μL·L-1 and 100 mg·L-1, respectively. The dormancy-breaking action of ethylene was dependent on the availability of nitrate. Hence, seed containing a high level of endogenous nitrate responded readily to ethylene, whereas nitrate-deficient seed required a combined application of ethylene and nitrate. Stimulation of seed germination by ethylene was observed in soil at all depths studied (up to 15 cm). The sensitivity of seed to ethylene increased upon imbibition to reach a peak on the third day, followed by a steady decline. Consequently, the greatest promotion of germination occurred when ethylene was administered during the first 3 to 4 days of imbibition. The loss of seed sensitivity was neither preempted nor overcome by an exogenous supply of KNO3, and may imply that the seed had passed into secondary dormancy. The present findings could form the basis for the use of ethylene to accomplish commercially significant promotion of germination in the field and thus improve the efficiency of the control of common lambsquarters.

Traditionally, herbicide efficacy has been evaluated by visual ratings, but these data provide little insight to the biological response of weeds to herbicides. Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 to determine the rate response of Setaria faberi seedling survival, seed production, and biomass to postemergence herbicides in Zea mays and Glycine max. Nicosulfuron and sethoxydim were applied to Z. mays and G. max, respectively, at 1×, 12×, 14×, 18×, 116×, 132×, and 0× the label rate. Mature plant density of S. faberi was linearly related to seedling density, indicating that seedling survival was not density dependent. Based on a nonlinear dose–response analysis, maximum S. faberi survival was 55% in Z. mays across years and 60 and 45% in G. max in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Minimum survival was 0% except for Z. mays in 1996 when it was 13%. The minimum survival was greater in Z. mays in 1996 due to greater survival of late cohorts than in 1995. Setaria faberi seedling survival was greater in 12× than 1× herbicide treatments in Z. mays and G. max each year. Setaria faberi seed production was related to mature plant density with a negative exponential function. Seed production per plant was similar between 1× and 12× rates in Z. mays and among 1×, 12×, and 14× rates in G. max each year. However, seed production per square meter was greater in 12× than 1× treatments due to greater seedling survival. Regardless, seed production per square meter was 95% less in the 12× herbicide treatment compared to seed production by untreated plants in Z. mays and G. max.

In vitro acetolactate synthase (ALS) activity from three commercial imidazolinone-resistant corn hybrids (ICI 8692 IT, Pioneer 3751 IR, and Ciba 4393 IMR) was compared to imidazolinone-sensitive isogenic hybrid controls for sensitivity to 11 herbicides representing four classes of ALS-inhibiting herbicide chemistry. Acetolactate synthase activity from Pioneer IR and Ciba IMR was cross-resistant to all four classes of ALS inhibitors, ranging from 48- to 5,000-fold. The ICI IT hybrid displayed only four- to eightfold resistance to the six imidazolinone herbicides and the pyrimidinylthiobenzoate herbicide, pyrithiobac, but no cross-resistance to the sulfonylurea and triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide herbicides. The four- to eightfold enzyme resistance to imidazolinone herbicides provides whole-plant resistance; however, the sevenfold enzyme resistance to pyrithiobac was insufficient to afford whole-plant protection to a field application rate of the herbicide. A second imidazolinone-specific resistance allele, XI-12, currently under commercial development, was examined for the level of dominance at the enzyme level. In the heterozygous state, imazethapyr resistance was fivefold, compared to 250-fold in the homozygous condition, indicating XI-12 is a semidominant trait. No cross-resistance to nicosulfuron or primisulfuron was observed in the heterozygous XI-12 hybrid extracts nor to nicosulfuron in the XI-12 homozygote; however, a fivefold resistance to primisulfuron was detected in the XI-12 homozygote.

Monoterpenes, the major constituents of essential oils, are known for their diverse biological activities. This study was conducted to assess the herbicidal effect of six monoterpenes viz. (R)-carvone, 1,8-cineole, cuminaldehyde, (S)-fenchone, geraniol, (S)-limonene, and (R)-linalool on barnyardgrass under laboratory and glasshouse conditions with a view to explore the possibility of their utilization for future weed management. The effect of monoterpenes on chlorophyll contents and total phenolic compounds was also evaluated. The inhibitory effects of monoterpenes on seed germination and seedling growth were tested at concentrations of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 mM. The results showed that geraniol and (R)-carvone caused greatest reduction of seed germination with complete inhibition at the concentrations > 2 mM. Similarly, these two compounds were the most potent inhibiters for root and shoot growth. In general, monoterpenes were less effective against seed germination than seedling growth. Furthermore, the inhibition of root growth by all compounds was greater than that of shoot growth. In foliar application treatments under glasshouse conditions, the monoterpenes reduced the fresh and dry weights, and shoot length of two-leaf stage barnyardgrass at concentrations of 1 and 2%. In addition, the tested monoterpenes caused phytotoxicity symptoms, mainly chlorosis and necrosis, followed by weed death. Complete weed control was observed in the treatments with 1 and 2% of geraniol, and 2% of cuminaldehyde. Further, a reduction of chlorophyll contents and total phenolic compounds of barnyardgrass leaves was noticed, indicating that the monoterpenes cause adverse effect on photosynthesis and weed metabolism. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the monoterpenes, particularly geraniol, (R)-carvone, and cuminaldehyde, can be used as potential natural herbicides.

Five populations of rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin) from fields across cropping regions in southern Australia were suspected of having resistance to thiocarbamates, chloroacetamides, and sulfonylisoxazoline herbicides. Resistant (R) populations 375-14, 198-15, 16.2, EP162, RAC1, and A18 and two susceptible (S) populations (SLR4 and VLR1) were included in a dose–response study. All suspected R populations expressed resistance to one or all herbicides (thiocarbamates, chloroacetamides, and pyroxasulfone). Population 198-15 exhibited the highest LD50 to triallate (44.7-fold), prosulfocarb (45.7-fold), S-metolachlor (31.5-fold), and metazachlor (27.2-fold) compared with the S populations. Populations 198-15 and 375-14 were also resistant to pyroxasulfone (13.5- and 14.9-fold) compared with the S populations, as was population EP162. This study documents the first case of field-evolved resistance to thiocarbamate, chloroacetamide, and sulfonylisoxazoline herbicides in L. rigidum.

A waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) J. D. Sauer] biotype (designated as “NER”) collected from a soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production field in eastern Nebraska survived the POST application of fomesafen at the labeled rate. The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the level of resistance to protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors (acifluorfen, fomesafen, and lactofen) applied POST, (2) determine the mechanism of PPO-inhibitor resistance in the NER biotype, (3) determine whether NER possessed multiple resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS)-, and photosystem II (PSII)-inhibiting herbicides, and (4) control NER with POST soybean herbicides. A whole-plant dose–response bioassay revealed that the NER biotype was 4- to 6-fold resistant to PPO-inhibiting herbicides depending on the known susceptible biotype (S1 or S2) used for comparison. A Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP™) assay was developed and performed for rapid and robust detection of the ΔG210 mutation (deletion of a codon) in the PPX2L gene. All samples of the NER biotype tested positive for the ΔG210 mutation. Dose–response bioassays confirmed that the NER biotype was resistant to three additional herbicide sites of action. Chlorimuron and imazethapyr, both ALS inhibitors, applied at 32X the labeled rate resulted in <80% reduction in the aboveground biomass of the NER biotype. The same biotype was 3- and 7-fold resistant to glyphosate (EPSPS inhibitor) and atrazine (PSII inhibitor), respectively. Glufosinate, 2,4-D choline plus glyphosate, and dicamba were the only soybean POST herbicides that controlled NER effectively (≥92% aboveground biomass reduction). Amaranthus tuberculatus is the first confirmed weed species in Nebraska to evolve resistance to four distinct herbicide sites of action, leaving no POST herbicide choice for effective control in glyphosate-resistant and conventional (non-transgenic) soybean.

Smallflower umbrella sedge is a problematic weed in direct-seeded rice in the midsouthern United States. It recently has evolved resistance to the acetolactate synthase (ALS) –inhibiting herbicide halosulfuron in Arkansas rice. Studies were conducted (1) to determine if the resistant biotype is cross resistant to other ALS-inhibiting herbicides, (2) to evaluate alternative herbicide control options, and (3) to determine the mechanism of resistance. Whole-plant bioassay revealed that halosulfuron-resistant plants were not controlled by bispyribac–sodium, imazamox, and penoxsulam at the labeled field rate of each herbicide. The level of resistance to these herbicides, based on the lethal dose needed to kill 50% of plants (LD50) was ≥ 15-fold compared to a susceptible biotype. Both biotypes were controlled >96% with bentazon and propanil and ≤ 23% with quinclorac, thiobencarb, and 2,4-D. Hence, effective control measures exist; albeit, the number of herbicide options appear limited. Based on in vitro ALS enzyme assays, altered target site is the mechanism of resistance to halosulfuron and imazamox. Massively parallel sequencing with the use of the Illumina HiSeq detected an amino acid substitution of Pro197-to-His in the resistant biotype that is consistent with ALS-inhibiting herbicide resistance in other weed species.

Field studies conducted at three locations in North Carolina in 1998 and 1999 evaluated crop tolerance, weed control, and yield with CGA-362622 alone and in combination with various weed management systems in transgenic and nontransgenic cotton systems. The herbicide systems used bromoxynil, CGA-362622, glyphosate, and pyrithiobac applied alone early postemergence (EPOST) or mixtures of CGA-362622 plus bromoxynil, glyphosate, or pyrithiobac applied EPOST. Trifluralin preplant incorporated followed by (fb) fluometuron preemergence (PRE) alone or fb a late POST–directed (LAYBY) treatment of prometryn plus MSMA controlled all the weed species present less than 90%. Herbicide systems that included soil-applied and LAYBY herbicides plus glyphosate EPOST or mixtures of CGA-362622 EPOST plus bromoxynil, glyphosate, or pyrithiobac controlled broadleaf signalgrass, entireleaf morningglory, large crabgrass, Palmer amaranth, prickly sida, sicklepod, and smooth pigweed at least 90%. Only cotton treated with these herbicide systems yielded equivalent to the weed-free check for each cultivar. Bromoxynil systems did not control Palmer amaranth and sicklepod, pyrithiobac systems did not control sicklepod, and CGA-362622 systems did not control prickly sida.

Initial and residual phytotoxicity of 3-(m-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea (fluometuron) in seven soils was studied under greenhouse condition, using oats (Avena sativa L., var. Brave) as the bioassay species. The phytotoxicity of fluometuron in four of the soils, with an organic matter range of 1.0 to 5.0%, was not different at any one of the five cropping periods. Inactivation of fluometuron was more rapid in Eden silty clay loam with 3.3% organic matter than in Maury silty clay loam/silt loam with 7.2% organic matter. Phytotoxicity was significantly correlated with organic matter and soluble phosphorus during the first two cropping periods, and with cation exchange capacity, exchangeable calcium, total exchangeable bases, and soluble phosphorus during the last three croppings.

A bioassay for photosynthetic and respiratory inhibitors was devised. The chlorophyll production of Chlorella pyrenoidosa Sorokin, high temperature strain 7-11-05, served as the basis of the bioassay which required 18 to 36 hr to complete. The sensitivity to nine photosynthetic and two respiratory inhibitors ranged from 0.013 to 0.4 ppm. The bioassay was successfully employed to assay leachates from soil columns and to monitor a field residue of 2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (atrazine).

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to elucidate the effects of water stress on photosynthetic parameters of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Hutton′] and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik. # ABUTH). Stomatal conductance of both species responded curvilinearly to reductions in leaf water potential. At leaf water potentials less negative than −2.5 MPa, stomatal conductance, net photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate were greater in velvetleaf than in soybean. Soybean photosynthetic rate was linearly related to stomatal conductance. Velvetleaf photosynthetic rate increased linearly with stomatal conductances up to 1.5 cm s–1; however, no increase in photosynthetic rate was observed at stomatal conductances greater than 1.5 cm s–1, indicating nonstomatal limitations to photosynthesis. As water stress intensified, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate, and transpiration of velvetleaf declined more rapidly than in soybean.

In 1985, when weed densities were low (169 plants/m2 in untreated control), imazaquin applied at 0.07 kg ai/ha early preplant controlled over 90% of all weeds before no-till planting of soybeans. In 1986 and 1987 when weed densities were higher (589 plants/m2 in untreated control), addition of 1.1 kg ai/ha or more of metolachlor to imazaquin (0.07 kg/ha) before soybean planting controlled 95% or more of the grass weeds and 83% or more of the broadleaf weeds. Imazaquin plus metolachlor applied less than 1 day after soybean planting controlled less than 70% of the emerged weeds in 1986 and 1987; common lambsquarters was most tolerant. Early preplant treatments controlled more weeds throughout the growing season than treatments applied after planting. Splitting herbicide treatments among application times generally did not increase weed control compared to single applications. Early preplant applications resulted in higher soybean densities and taller soybeans 30 days after planting in 1986 and 1987 than treatments applied after planting. Soybean yields increased as weed control increased. Weed control and soybean yields were greater with early preplant treatments than paraquat plus alachlor plus metribuzin applied preemergence in 1986 and 1987. No carryover of imazaquin residue was detected through corn bioassay in the field.

Rhizomes were sampled from quackgrass sod weekly during two seasons. The activity of buds on one-bud sections from mature rhizomes was used to determine periods of growth and dormancy. The rhizome buds showed a steady decrease in activity from mid-April to June 1. During June, the buds were dormant. Recovery began in late June and continued the rest of the summer. Only one-third of all rhizome material in a three-year-old sod was viable. The amount of viable mature rhizomes decreased during the season while the viable new rhizomes increased, and the total viable level remained fairly constant. This suggested a definite cycle in rhizome production and decomposition from year to year and a short life-period in the soil. The term “late-spring dormancy” is suggested for quackgrass rhizomes, based on the prevailing cool and moist weather conditions and the late-spring time of occurrence during the year. This distinguishes the type of dormancy described from “summer dormancy”.

Where sugar beets followed the year after one year's use of 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine), the carryover, measured by beet response was correlated with the time, the method, and the rate of atrazine used, and the time of plow-down. Where beets were the second crop after an atrazine application, carryover was correlated with the rate of application only. Carryover was greatest following two consecutive years' use of atrazine. Sugar beets were more sensitive to atrazine than were soybeans, navy beans, or oats.
