I discuss especially my summer with Willy Fowler at Kellogg Radiation Laboratory in 1951, where I did my ‘triple alpha’ work. I also go back even earlier to Arthur Eddington and Hans Bethe. The 1953 summer school in Ann Arbor only gets a mention.

Observations of the Einstein Cross QSO reveal that the mid-infrared region is unaffected by microlensing. Thus, the infrared emission region must be extended on a scale >1017 cm, ruling out synchrotron models, but consistent with dust emission models. Other constraints rule out starburst models. The flux ratios greatly constrain the lens model.

In this contribution Gemini-North NIRI J,K-observations are used to investigate the upper-Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) intermediate-age population in the M81 Group dwarf elliptical (dE) F8D1. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ‘snapshot’ V,I-observations are also analysed to investigate the upper-AGB populations in two other M81 Group dEs, DDO 71 and kk077. In all three dEs, significant intermediate-age populations are found. Further, there are sizeable dE-to-dE differences in these populations: F8D1 contains relatively more, and relatively more luminous, upper-AGB stars. These results are compared with existing information for Local Group and Sculptor group dwarfs. It is suggested that ‘environmental harrassment’ plays an important role in governing dwarf galaxy evolution.

Optically, the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) can only be explored to within a few degrees of the Galactic Equator. This restriction does not apply to radio wavelengths where we are able to detect galaxies at great distances behind the Galactic Plane. Using the Parkes 21 cm multibeam instrument we have detected neutral hydrogen (HI) in 42 galaxies in the region of the Great Attractor. We have been able to identify nine galaxies and make positional associations with a further six from existing optical catalogues, which makes at least 60% of these galaxies new discoveries.

Here we present the first results of a search for new optical supernova remnant candidates and other filamentary objects on films produced by the Anglo-Australian Observatory/UK Schmidt Telescope Há Survey. Sixty-one fields, or 26% of the Galactic plane survey fields, have been visually examined. This has resulted in the detection of four newlarge diameter filamentary structures, and the discovery of extensive new optical emission in two previously known optical supernova remnant candidates.

Closure phase is the phase of a closed-loop product of spatial coherences formed by a ${\ge}3$ -element interferometer array. Its invariance to phase corruption attributable to individual array elements acquired during the propagation and the measurement processes, subsequent calibration, and errors therein, makes it a valuable tool in interferometry applications that otherwise require high-accuracy phase calibration. However, its understanding has remained mainly mathematical and limited to the aperture plane (Fourier dual of the image plane). Here, we present a geometrical, image domain view of closure phase, which until now has been lacking. Using the principal triangle in a 3-element interference image formed by a triad of interferometer elements, we show that the properties of closure phase, particularly its invariance to multiplicative element-based corruption factors (even of a large magnitude) and to translation, are intricately related to the conserved properties of the triangle, namely, its shape, orientation, and size, which is referred herein as the ‘shape-orientation-size (SOS) conservation principle’. In the absence of a need for element-based amplitude calibration of the interferometer array (as is typical in optical interferometry), the principal triangle in any 3-element interference image formed from phase-uncalibrated spatial coherences is still a true and uncorrupted representation of the source object’s morphology, except for a possible shift. Based on this knowledge of the triangle SOS conservation principle, we present two geometric methods to measure the closure phase directly from a simple 3-element interference image (without requiring an aperture-plane view): (i) the closure phase is directly measurable from any one of the triangle’s heights, and (ii) the squared closure phase is proportional to the product of the areas enclosed by the triad of array elements and the principal triangle in the aperture and image planes, respectively. We validate the geometric understanding of closure phase in the image plane using observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and the Event Horizon Telescope. These results verify the SOS conservation principle across a wide range of radio interferometric conditions. This geometric insight can be potentially valuable to other interferometric applications, such as optical interferometry. We also generalise these geometric relationships to an N-element interferometer.

The substantial number of binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) now known ($\sim 50$) has revealed a strong connection between binarity and some morphological features including jets and low-ionisation structures. However, some morphological features and asymmetries might be too complex or subtle to ascribe to binary interactions alone. In these cases, a tertiary component, that is, a triple nucleus, could be the missing ingredient required to produce these features. The only proven triple, NGC 246, is alone insufficient to investigate the shaping role of triple nuclei, but one straightforward way to identify more triples is to search for binaries in nuclei with known visual companions. Here we demonstrate this approach with the SALT HRS (High Resolution Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope) discovery of a 4.81-d orbital period in the CSPN of Sp 3 which has a visual companion 0.31 arcsec away. The spectroscopic distance of the visual companion is in agreement with distance estimates to the nebula, the Gaia DR2 parallax of the central star, and the gravity distance of the central star. This supports a physical association between the visual companion and the inner 4.81 d binary, making the nucleus of Sp 3 a likely triple. We determine $T_\mathrm{eff}=68^{+12}_{-6}\ \text{kK},\ \log g=4.6\pm0.2\ \text{cm s}^{-2}$, and $v_\mathrm{rot}=80\pm20\ \text{km s}^{-1}$ for the primary from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model atmosphere analysis. The peculiar nebula presents an apparent bipolar morphology, jets, and an unexpected ‘extreme’ oxygen abundance discrepancy factor (adf) of $24.6^{+4.1}_{-3.4}$. The adf is inconsistent with the purported trend for longer orbital period post-common-envelope (CE) PNe to exhibit normal adfs, further highlighting the dominant influence of selection effects in post-CE PNe. Lastly, the Type I nebular abundances of Sp 3, whose origin is often attributed to more massive progenitors, are incongruous with the likely Galactic Thick Disk membership of Sp 3, possibly suggesting that rotation and binarity may play an important role in influencing the AGB nucleosynthesis of PNe.

We have measured the rotational velocity of the companion star to be Ʊrot sin i= 80 ± 10 km s ˗1 (1σ) by fitting Kurucz model spectra to our observed spectrum of the black-hole candidate GRO J1655–40. From this we have calculated q = 0·31 ± 0·08, the mass of the compact object to be M1 = 7·91 ± 3·79 Mô (1σ) and for the companion starM2 = 2·76 ± 1·79 Mô (1σ), which is consistent with previous studies. We have also determined Teff = 6500 ± 50 K and [Fe/H] = −0·15 +0·15-0·10.

Correlations are identified between the strength of the λ10830 He I triplet line and the following tracers of stellar activity amongst FGK dwarfs with colours of (B − V) > 0.47: coronal soft X-ray emission, emission in the λ1549 C IV and λ1335 C II lines originating from the transition region, and Ca II H and K emission from the chromosphere. No such correlations are present amongst dwarfs with spectral type earlier than F6. In addition, G and K dwarfs with strong triplet lines show evidence of excess flux in the GALEX FUV band compared to weak-triplet-line dwarfs. The X-ray spectra of late-F, G, and K dwarfs with He I triplets stronger than 160 mÅ have greater values of the ROSAT hardness ratio HR1 than are typical of weak-triplet dwarfs in the same range of spectral type. In other words, dwarfs later than F7V with strong He I triplet lines tend towards harder 0.1–2.0 keV X-ray spectra than weak-triplet dwarfs, although values of HR1 ~ −0.2 to +0.1 can still be encountered amongst a minority of weak-He-triplet stars. As regards, FGK main sequence stars the observational data on the λ10830 triplet line remains sparse. Progress could be made through spectroscopy of high resolution for samples of hundreds of stars, selected on the basis of having other measures of chromospheric and coronal activity available.

The confined nature of the debris from the Sagittarius dwarf to a narrow trail on the sky has recently prompted the suggestion that the dark matter halo of our Galaxy should be nearly spherical (Ibata et al. 2001; Majewski et al. 2003). This would seem to be in strong contrast with predictions from cold dark matter (CDM) simulations, where dark halos are found to have typical density axis ratios of 0.6 to 0.8. Here I present numerical simulations of the evolution of a system like the Sagittarius dSph in a set of Galactic potentials with varying degrees of flattening. These simulations show that the Sagittarius streams discovered so far are too young dynamically to be sensitive to the shape of the dark halo of the Milky Way. The data presently available are entirely consistent with a Galactic dark matter halo that could either be oblate or prolate, with density axis ratios c/a that range from 0.6 to 1.6 within the region of the halo probed by the orbit of the Sagittarius dwarf.

Therecently discovered massive binary system Apep is the most powerful synchrotron emitter among the known Galactic colliding-wind binaries. This makes this particular system of great interest to investigate stellar winds and the non-thermal processes associated with their shocks. This source was detected at various radio bands, and in addition the wind-collision region was resolved by means of very-long baseline interferometric observations. We use a non-thermal emission model for colliding-wind binaries to derive physical properties of this system. The observed morphology in the resolved maps allows us to estimate the system projection angle on the sky to be $\psi \approx 85^\circ$ . The observed radio flux densities also allow us to characterise both the intrinsic synchrotron spectrum of the source and its modifications due to free–free absorption in the stellar winds at low frequencies; from this, we derive mass–loss rates of the stars of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WN} \approx 4\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ and $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WC} \approx 2.9\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ . Finally, the broadband spectral energy distribution is calculated for different combinations of the remaining free parameters, namely the intensity of the magnetic field and the injected power in non-thermal particles. We show that the degeneracy of these two parameters can be solved with observations in the high-energy domain, most likely in the hard X-rays but also possibly in $\gamma$ -rays under favourable conditions.

Cosmic ray transient variations are signatures of the underlying solar processes which affect the heliomagnetic structure. They can be found in the data from surface systems, such as neutron monitors and muon telescopes, and from shallow underground muon telescopes. Although sometimes observable at all latitudes, the global distribution of the effects is important in determining the structures and causes. Three transient variation types are known, namely Forbush decreases, ground level enhancements, and quasi-periodic fluctuations. The latter category includes some variations which are, perhaps, too long-lived to be considered truly transient. In this review, the detection techniques and background of cosmic ray research are followed by a summary of some observations in each transient category. The heliomagnetic structures and dynamics inferred from such transients are discussed together with the possible impact such events can have on human activity.

Observations of transient solar radio emissions lasting 0.2 to 2 s in the frequency range 25-50 MHz have demonstrated the existence of a characteristic and relatively common type of burst (the split pair) made up of two narrow band components separated in frequency by about 0.1 MHz.

Both radial and non-radial motions have been suggested at various stages to explain the observational peculiarities of the β Cephei variables. The non-radial possibility has been investigated most recently by Smith (1977) and Stamford and Watson (1977). We here examine the radial shock proposal by generating a series of isothermal radial shock models in suitable early B star atmospheres. Odgers (1955) has long advocated such a model in connection with the large amplitude variable BW Vul. The observations of Goldberg, Walker and Odgers (1976) clearly show a radial velocity ‘stillstand’ effect and line splitting in this star. We discuss our models in the context of these two phenomena.

We present the findings about chromospheric activity nature of KOI-256 obtained from the Kepler Mission data. First, it was found that there are some sinusoidal variations out-of-eclipses due to cool spot activity. The sinusoidal variations modelled by the spotmodel program indicate that the active component has two different active regions. Their longitudinal variation revealed that one of them has a migration period of 3.95 yrs, while the other has a migration period of 8.37 yrs. Second, 225 flares were detected from the short cadence data in total. The parameters, such as increase (Tr) and decay (Td) times, total flare time (Tt), equivalent durations (P), were calculated for each flare. The distribution of equivalent durations versus total flare times in logarithmic scale is modelled to find flare activity level. The Plateau value known as the saturation level of the active component was calculated to be 2.3121 ± 0.0964 s, and the Half-life value, which is required flare total time to reach the saturation, was computed to be 2233.6 s. In addition, the frequency of N1, which is the number of flares per an hour in the system, was found to be 0.05087 h−1, while the flare frequency N2 that the flare-equivalent duration emitting per an hour was found to be 0.00051. Contrary to the spot activity, it has been found that the flares are in tends to appear at specific phases due to the white dwarf component.

A new astronomical window into the southern skies has been opened with the high-frequency upgrade to the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), which allows radio-interferometric mapping of sources at wavelengths as short as 3 mm. In anticipation of the upgrade's completion, a two-day workshop was held at the University of Melbourne in November 2001. The workshop covered a diverse range of fields, tied together by a common theme of identifying key areas where ATCA observations can have an impact. More than half of the talks were concerned with molecular clouds and star formation, with the remainder covering topics such as molecular gas in the Galactic Centre, Seyfert nuclei, and high-redshift objects. Some early results from the 3 and 12 mm prototype systems were also presented. In consultation with the speakers, we are presenting in this article a summary of the talks. The original slides are available from the ATNF website.

The geographic South Pole, where the United States maintains a year-round scientific station, affords a number of unique advantages for certain types of astronomical observations. These include: continuous viewing and constant declination of ail objects in the southern celestial hemisphere, exceedingly low humidity, extended periods of coronal seeing, high altitude, and uniform terrain. The areas of research that have already benefited immensely from thèse extraordinary features are helioseismology and submillimeter astronomy. Unparalleled observations of global solar oscillations have already yielded significant information about the structure and dynamics of the Sun’s interior. Far infrared measurements of various galactic and extra-galactic regions have attained an unprecedented level of sensitivity, limited for the first time only by the noise inherent in the detector. In addition to further helioseismological observations, currently planned future activities include observational cosmology and ultra high energy gamma ray astronomy.

Spatial clustering nature of galaxies has been studied previously through auto correlation function. The same type of cross-correlation function has been used in the present work to investigate parametric clustering nature of galaxies with respect to masses and sizes of galaxies. Here, formation and evolution of several components of nearby massive early type galaxies (M* ≥ 1.3 × 1011 M⊙ have been envisaged through cross-correlations, in the mass-size parametric plane, with high redshift (0.2 ⩽ z ⩽ 7) ETGs. It is found that the inner most components of nearby ETGs have significant correlation (~ 0.5 ± (0.02–0.07)) with ETGs in the highest redshift range (2 ⩽ z ⩽ 7) called ‘red nuggets’ whereas intermediate components are highly correlated (~ 0.65 ± (0.03–0.07)) with ETGs in the redshift range 0.5 ⩽ z ⩽ 0.75. The outermost part has no correlation in any range, suggesting a scenario through in situ accretion. The above formation scenario is consistent with the previous results obtained for NGC5128 and to some extent for nearby elliptical galaxies after considering a sample of ETGs at high redshift with stellar masses greater than or equal to 108.73 M⊙. So the present work indicates a three phase formation instead of two as discussed in previous works.

We present HI images for the dust-lane elliptical galaxy NGC 5266. This galaxy contains more than 1010M☉ of HI and our data show that the neutral hydrogen extends to ∼8 arcmin each side of the nucleus, or eight times the optical half-light radius Re. Surprisingly, the outer HI gas extends almost orthogonally to the optical dust lane. The overall HI kinematics can be successfully modelled by assuming that the gas hes in two orthogonal planes—in the plane of the dust lane in the central parts and perpendicular to this in the outer regions. The large amount of neutral gas observed and the HI morphology suggest that this object may have formed from the merger of two gas rich spiral galaxies. If so, it probably represents a relatively old merger remnant since most of the HI appears settled. The mass-to-light ratio has also been derived, with evidence for a dark matter halo around this galaxy.

Significant evidence for a bi-directional sidereal anisotropy has been obtained from observations with meson telescopes at depths in the vicinity of 40 metres water equivalent (m.w.e.) underground. The anisotropy is of the type which should occur when charged particles which were formerly isotropic stream equally in both directions along a magnetic field, if there is a tendency for pitch angles to become reduced (the pitch angle being the angle between the particle trajectory and the direction of the field). If the magnetic moments of the particles are adiabatically invariant, changes in the magnetic field, both with position and time, could be responsible for the anisotropy.
