Gravitational lensing can significantly magnify the images of astrophysical sources, but only if the source lies within the Einstein ring of the lens. In consequence the chance of any Galactic star magnifying a more distant source is extremely small—much less than one in a million. However, the extra light travel time (‘Shapiro delay’) introduced by the presence of a lens can be large even when there is negligible effect on the image magnification, and as the relative positions of source and lens change so does the delay. In this paper we quantify these changes and the corresponding influence on apparent timing properties of pulsars. While the total Shapiro delay can be large, it is the temporal variations in this quantity which are measurable with pulsar timing. We find that the magnitude of the expected delay variations is too small to be detectable except during strong lensing events, which are extremely rare. Even in the case of a high-velocity pulsar in the Galactic Plane, the stochastic Shapiro delay is typically expected not to have a substantial influence on the timing properties. In consequence the viability of a pulsar-based time standard is not adversely affected by gravitational lensing.

A brief overview of the current radio source host galaxy state of affairs is given. All the evidence appears to point towards a scenario in which the young radio source expands through the host galaxy on timescales of 105–106 yr, before it ends its life as a large scale FR II radio galaxy. The place and role of the quasars in this evolutionary picture is unclear, however, and remains an issue of debate.

Observations of transient solar radio emissions lasting 0.2 to 2 s in the frequency range 25-50 MHz have demonstrated the existence of a characteristic and relatively common type of burst (the split pair) made up of two narrow band components separated in frequency by about 0.1 MHz.

The RGU-photographic investigation of an intermediate latitude field in the direction to the Galactic centre is presented. 164 extra-galactic objects, identified by comparison of Minnesota and Basel charts, are excluded from the program. Also, a region with size 0.104 square-degrees, contaminated by cluster (M5) stars and affected by background light of the bright star HD 136202 is omitted. Contrary to previous investigations, a reddening of E(B – V) = 0.046, corresponding to E(G – R) = 0.07 mag is adopted. The separation of dwarfs and evolved stars is carried out by an empirical method, already applied in some of our works. A new calibration for the metallicity determination is used for dwarfs, while the absolute magnitude determination for stars of all categories is performed using the procedures given in the literature. There is good agreement between the observed logarithmic space density histograms and the galactic model gradients. Also, the local luminosity function agrees with Gliese's (1969) and Hipparcos (Jahreiss & Wielen 1997) luminosity functions, for stars with 2 < M(G) ≤ 8 mag. For giants, we obtained two different local space densities from comparison with two Galactic models, i.e. D*(0) = 6.63, close to that of Gliese (1969), and D*(0) = 6.79. A metallicity gradient, d[Fe/H]/dz = –0.20 dex kpc–1, is detected for dwarfs (only) with absolute magnitudes 4 < M(G) ≤ 6, corresponding to a spectral type interval F5–K0.

Cosmic ray transient variations are signatures of the underlying solar processes which affect the heliomagnetic structure. They can be found in the data from surface systems, such as neutron monitors and muon telescopes, and from shallow underground muon telescopes. Although sometimes observable at all latitudes, the global distribution of the effects is important in determining the structures and causes. Three transient variation types are known, namely Forbush decreases, ground level enhancements, and quasi-periodic fluctuations. The latter category includes some variations which are, perhaps, too long-lived to be considered truly transient. In this review, the detection techniques and background of cosmic ray research are followed by a summary of some observations in each transient category. The heliomagnetic structures and dynamics inferred from such transients are discussed together with the possible impact such events can have on human activity.

The Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope is being used in a continuing program of observation of known Southern active stars. By May, 1987, a total of forty-one stars had been observed and 843 MHz quiescent emission, presumably associated with the star, had been detected in nine instances. The emission from five of these stars has shown marked variation on a time-scale > 1 day.

Both radial and non-radial motions have been suggested at various stages to explain the observational peculiarities of the β Cephei variables. The non-radial possibility has been investigated most recently by Smith (1977) and Stamford and Watson (1977). We here examine the radial shock proposal by generating a series of isothermal radial shock models in suitable early B star atmospheres. Odgers (1955) has long advocated such a model in connection with the large amplitude variable BW Vul. The observations of Goldberg, Walker and Odgers (1976) clearly show a radial velocity ‘stillstand’ effect and line splitting in this star. We discuss our models in the context of these two phenomena.

We present the findings about chromospheric activity nature of KOI-256 obtained from the Kepler Mission data. First, it was found that there are some sinusoidal variations out-of-eclipses due to cool spot activity. The sinusoidal variations modelled by the spotmodel program indicate that the active component has two different active regions. Their longitudinal variation revealed that one of them has a migration period of 3.95 yrs, while the other has a migration period of 8.37 yrs. Second, 225 flares were detected from the short cadence data in total. The parameters, such as increase (Tr) and decay (Td) times, total flare time (Tt), equivalent durations (P), were calculated for each flare. The distribution of equivalent durations versus total flare times in logarithmic scale is modelled to find flare activity level. The Plateau value known as the saturation level of the active component was calculated to be 2.3121 ± 0.0964 s, and the Half-life value, which is required flare total time to reach the saturation, was computed to be 2233.6 s. In addition, the frequency of N1, which is the number of flares per an hour in the system, was found to be 0.05087 h−1, while the flare frequency N2 that the flare-equivalent duration emitting per an hour was found to be 0.00051. Contrary to the spot activity, it has been found that the flares are in tends to appear at specific phases due to the white dwarf component.

Spatial clustering nature of galaxies has been studied previously through auto correlation function. The same type of cross-correlation function has been used in the present work to investigate parametric clustering nature of galaxies with respect to masses and sizes of galaxies. Here, formation and evolution of several components of nearby massive early type galaxies (M* ≥ 1.3 × 1011 M⊙ have been envisaged through cross-correlations, in the mass-size parametric plane, with high redshift (0.2 ⩽ z ⩽ 7) ETGs. It is found that the inner most components of nearby ETGs have significant correlation (~ 0.5 ± (0.02–0.07)) with ETGs in the highest redshift range (2 ⩽ z ⩽ 7) called ‘red nuggets’ whereas intermediate components are highly correlated (~ 0.65 ± (0.03–0.07)) with ETGs in the redshift range 0.5 ⩽ z ⩽ 0.75. The outermost part has no correlation in any range, suggesting a scenario through in situ accretion. The above formation scenario is consistent with the previous results obtained for NGC5128 and to some extent for nearby elliptical galaxies after considering a sample of ETGs at high redshift with stellar masses greater than or equal to 108.73 M⊙. So the present work indicates a three phase formation instead of two as discussed in previous works.

Significant evidence for a bi-directional sidereal anisotropy has been obtained from observations with meson telescopes at depths in the vicinity of 40 metres water equivalent (m.w.e.) underground. The anisotropy is of the type which should occur when charged particles which were formerly isotropic stream equally in both directions along a magnetic field, if there is a tendency for pitch angles to become reduced (the pitch angle being the angle between the particle trajectory and the direction of the field). If the magnetic moments of the particles are adiabatically invariant, changes in the magnetic field, both with position and time, could be responsible for the anisotropy.

We present HI images for the dust-lane elliptical galaxy NGC 5266. This galaxy contains more than 1010M☉ of HI and our data show that the neutral hydrogen extends to ∼8 arcmin each side of the nucleus, or eight times the optical half-light radius Re. Surprisingly, the outer HI gas extends almost orthogonally to the optical dust lane. The overall HI kinematics can be successfully modelled by assuming that the gas hes in two orthogonal planes—in the plane of the dust lane in the central parts and perpendicular to this in the outer regions. The large amount of neutral gas observed and the HI morphology suggest that this object may have formed from the merger of two gas rich spiral galaxies. If so, it probably represents a relatively old merger remnant since most of the HI appears settled. The mass-to-light ratio has also been derived, with evidence for a dark matter halo around this galaxy.

Due to its proximity, the neutral hydrogen belonging to Cen A can be observed at high resolution with good sensitivity. This allows us to study the morphology and kinematics in detail, in order to understand the evolution of this radio-loud source (e.g. merger history, AGN activity). At the same time, it is important to compare results to other sources of the same class (i.e. early-type galaxies in general and radio galaxies in particular) to see how Cen A fits into the global picture of early-type/radio galaxy evolution. The amount of Hi, the morphology of a warped disk with Hi clouds surrounding the disk and the regular kinematics of the inner part of the Hi disk are not unusual for early-type galaxies. The growing evidence that mergers are not necessarily responsible for AGN activity fits with the observational result that the recent merger event in Cen A is not directly connected to the current phase of activity. Based on these results, we conclude that Cen A has typical neutral hydrogen properties for an early-type and radio galaxy and it can therefore — from the perspective of Hi — be seen as a typical example of its class.

An adaptive algorithm is presented for the wavelength calibration of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). The new algorithm can identify emission lines of calibration lamp without manual interaction and then fit relationship between the pixel positions and the wavelengths by utilizing a polynomial function. In this study, experiments are performed both on the actual data observed by LAMOST and the simulated data to analyze the accuracy and the robustness.The experimental results show that the proposed automatic algorithm can perform the lines identification exactly and acquire the wavelength solution accurately. Thus, an applicable approach is provided for the wavelength calibration of LAMOST.

The Square Kilometre Array and its pathfinders ASKAP and MeerKAT will produce prodigious amounts of data that necessitate automated source finding. The performance of automated source finders can be improved by pre-processing a dataset. In preparation for the WALLABY and DINGO surveys, we have used a test Hi datacube constructed from actual Westerbork Telescope noise and WHISP Hi galaxies to test the real world improvement of linear smoothing, the Duchamp source finder's wavelet denoising, iterative median smoothing and mathematical morphology subtraction, on intensity threshold source finding of spectral line datasets. To compare these pre-processing methods we have generated completeness-reliability performance curves for each method and a range of input parameters. We find that iterative median smoothing produces the best source finding results for ASKAP Hi spectral line observations, but wavelet denoising is a safer pre-processing technique. In this paper we also present our implementations of iterative median smoothing and mathematical morphology subtraction.

In the black hole (BH)–galaxy co-evolution framework, most of the star formation (SF) and the BH accretion are expected to take place in highly obscured conditions. The large amount of gas and dust absorbs most of the UV-to-soft-X radiation and re-emits it at longer wavelengths, mostly in the IR. Thus, obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) are very difficult to identify in optical or X-ray bands but shine bright in the IR. Moreover, X-ray background (XRB) synthesis models predict that a large fraction of the yet-unresolved XRB is due to the most obscured (Compton thick, CT: N $_{\text{H}}\ge 10^{24} \,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ ) of these AGN. In this work, we investigate the synergies between putative IR missions [using SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), proposed for European Space Agency (ESA)/M5 but withdrawn in 2020 October, and Origins Space Telescope, OST, as ‘templates’] and the X-ray mission Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics), which should fly in early 2030s, in detecting and characterising AGN, with a particular focus on the most obscured ones. Using an XRB synthesis model, we estimated the number of AGN and the number of those which will be detected in the X-rays by Athena. For each AGN, we associated an optical-to-Far InfraRed (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) from observed AGN with both X-ray data and SED decomposition and used these SEDs to check if the AGN will be detected by SPICA-like or OST at IR wavelengths. We expect that, with the deepest Athena and SPICA-like (or OST) surveys, we will be able to photometrically detect in the IR more than 90% of all the AGN (down to $L_{2-10\text{keV}} \sim 10^{42}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ and up to $z \sim 10$ ) predicted by XRB synthesis modeling, and we will detect at least half of them in the X-rays. The spectroscopic capabilities of the OST can provide ${\approx}51\,000$ and ${\approx}3\,400$ AGN spectra with $R= 300$ at 25–588 $\unicode[Times]{x03BC}$ m in the wide and deep surveys, respectively, the last one up to $z\approx 4$ . Athena will be extremely powerful in detecting and discerning moderate- and high-luminosity AGN, allowing us to properly select AGN even when the mid-IR torus emission is ‘hidden’ by the host galaxy contribution. We will constrain the intrinsic luminosity and the amount of obscuration for $\sim\!20\%$ of all the AGN (and $\sim\!50\%$ of those with $L_{2-10\text{keV}} > 3.2 \times 10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ ) using the X-ray spectra provided by Athena WFI. We find that the most obscured and elusive CT-AGN will be exquisitely sampled by SPICA-like mission or OST and that Athena will allow a fine characterisation of the most luminous ones. This will provide a significant step forward in the process of placing stronger constraints on the yet-unresolved XRB and investigating the BH accretion rate evolution up to very high redshift ( $z \ge 4$ ).

Imaging bundles provide a convenient way to translate a spatially coherent image, yet conventional imaging bundles made from silica fibre optics typically remain expensive with large losses due to poor filling factors (~40%). We present the characterisation of a novel polymer imaging bundle made from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that is considerably cheaper and a better alternative to silica imaging bundles over short distances (~1 m; from the middle to the edge of a telescope’s focal plane). The large increase in filling factor (92% for the polymer imaging bundle) outweighs the large increase in optical attenuation from using PMMA (1 dB/m) instead of silica (10−3 dB/m). We present and discuss current and possible future multi-object applications of the polymer imaging bundle in the context of astronomical instrumentation including: field acquisition, guiding, wavefront sensing, narrow-band imaging, aperture masking, and speckle imaging. The use of PMMA limits its use in low-light applications (e.g., imaging of galaxies); however, it is possible to fabricate polymer imaging bundles from a range of polymers that are better suited to the desired science.

We present images of Mars obtained in the 2.0 μm CO2 band with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). The images reveal topographic features of the Martian surface that are usually invisible in direct albedo images at visible or IR wavelengths, but agree remarkably well with the topography of the planet as mapped by the MOLA instrument on Mars Global Surveyor. The CO2 band depth is a measure of the absorbing column of CO2 and hence determined primarily by the surface atmospheric pressure. The surface pressure variations are detected with a sensitivity of 4–5 Pa. We compare our data with radiative transfer models and find that the measured CO2 variation with pressure is consistent with the models. We discuss the possibility that similar observations might be used to observe atmospheric pressure changes due to Martian weather systems.

The Algol type eclipsing binary KZ Pav has been observed over one complete orbit (0.95 days) with theAustraliaTelescope CompactArray. Contemporaneous optical photometric data from the University of Southern Queensland’s Observatory at Mount Kent were also collected and have been included in this multi-wavelength study.

Preliminary indications are that the low levels of emission observed share similarities to those of some RS CVn binaries. The optical data show phase-linked effects which can be related to the mass transfer process of Algols. The possibility that the radio emission may be related to this process is considered.

The past and present existence of smaller bodies in our solar system manifests itself in various ways through the appearance of asteroids, minor moons, planetary rings, surface cratering, etc. The occurrence of these planetesimals appears to be an integral intermediary step in the formation of the larger bodies from the initial grain state. In order to account for the discreteness and order of the planetary orbits and regular satellite systems, Prentice (1977, 1978) has suggested that the accumulation of this planetesimal material took place in a series of well defined orbits corresponding to the positions of a system of gaseous Laplacian rings that were shed by the primitive contracting parent cloud. Alfvén and Arrhenius (1975) have also drawn attention to the fact that planetesimal formation occurs far more effectively if the accumulation takes place along well defined ‘jet streams’. Hourigan (1977) has previously demonstrated how such concentrated rock/ice streams or ‘jet-streams’ naturally form on the mean Keplerian orbit of gaseous rings that are present in the Prentice-Laplace model.

Waves of variation in the daily average cosmic ray intensity at the Earth’s surface were first detected in the neutron monitor record. Following the abnormal cosmic ray storm of September 1978, a sinusoidal 13.5 day periodicity was observed in the average intensity (Pomerantz and Duggal 1979), persisting for at least two solar rotations. Further observations, including underground data from the southern hemisphere, confirmed that not only were the waves isotropic but exhibited approximately a p−1 variational dependence on primary rigidity p (Duggal et al. 1981). No further evidence for this kind of wave has yet come to light. However, in the latter half of 1982 a series of 27-day waves that were apparently of a different character were detected. The evidence for their presence resulted from an analysis of the disturbed period that followed the occurrence of the large Forbush Decrease commencing 13 July 1982. It seemed at first that they could be described as anisotropic waves of the well-known interplanetary North-South asymmetry (Jacklyn and Pomerantz 1983).
