Chromospheric brightening and Hα surges are evident and common phenomena along sunspot light bridges. In this paper, a coronal jet ejection from a sunspot light bridge is presented. Using data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and Hinode satellites, it is confirmed that the jet has its root near the light bridge. This suggests that the jet may be a result of reconnection between the main sunspot and the light bridge. Due to the processing of jet ejecta, the intensity and width of the light bridge show changes to some extent. This also suggests that the jet is related to the interaction between light bridge and umbra, possibly owing to magnetic reconnection or heated plasma trapped in the light bridge escaping and moving along field lines.

We use the stellar census of OB associations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to predict the Hα luminosities of the host HII regions, based on results from stellar atmosphere models. These values are compared to the observed HII region luminosities, yielding an estimate for the mean fraction of H-ionising photons that escape the local nebulae in this sample. We formally estimate that, overall, 0–51% of the ionising radiation escapes the local HII regions and is available to ionise the warm, ionised medium in the LMC. We find both nebulae that appear to be density-bounded and ones that appear to be radiation-bounded.

We present a calibration component for the Murchison Widefield Array All-Sky Virtual Observatory (MWA ASVO) utilising a newly developed PostgreSQL database of calibration solutions. Since its inauguration in 2013, the MWA has recorded over 34 petabytes of data archived at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. According to the MWA Data Access policy, data become publicly available 18 months after collection. Therefore, most of the archival data are now available to the public. Access to public data was provided in 2017 via the MWA ASVO interface, which allowed researchers worldwide to download MWA uncalibrated data in standard radio astronomy data formats (CASA measurement sets or UV FITS files). The addition of the MWA ASVO calibration feature opens a new, powerful avenue for researchers without a detailed knowledge of the MWA telescope and data processing to download calibrated visibility data and create images using standard radio astronomy software packages. In order to populate the database with calibration solutions from the last 6 yr we developed fully automated pipelines. A near-real-time pipeline has been used to process new calibration observations as soon as they are collected and upload calibration solutions to the database, which enables monitoring of the interferometric performance of the telescope. Based on this database, we present an analysis of the stability of the MWA calibration solutions over long time intervals.

During the interval May 1968 to March 1969 the 80 MHz radioheliograph at Culgoora has been used in a detailed study of the intensity variations in the pulsars CP 0834, 0950, 1133 and 1919. Some preliminary results for CP 1133 and 1919 have already been reported.

One of the factors determining system sensitivity in radio astronomy measurements of microwave emission and absorption spectra is the flatness of the spectrometer response in the absence of any spectral features. Ripple appears as a quasi-sinusoidal variation of this baseline and occurs whenever two or more components of the same signal reach the receiver by different paths and interfere.

We report on the identifications of 15 new X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). The AGN have been discovered during an ongoing program to identify and study the optical counterparts of X-ray sources detected by the HEAO-1 satellite. The new AGN add to our existing data base of 26 making a sample of 41 objects which are the subject of a multiwavelength study including radio, infrared, optical, UV and X-ray observations. As part of this study 8.4 GHz flux measurements have been made at Parkes. Radio-optical-X-ray continuum spectral index comparisons are presented.

We have carried out calculations to model the hydrogen emission line spectrum of intermediate polars with accretion disks. We show that we can explain most of the observed optical continuum and line fluxes in terms of hard and soft X-rays that originate from the accretion shocks and are reprocessed in curtains formed by magnetically channelled material.

The stability of accretion shocks in magnetic white dwarfs is investigated. Shock oscillations are simulated numerically, and in the simulations bremsstrahlung and cyclotron cooling are considered in an explicit form. We have found that for shocks with magnetic fields lower than 10 MG, shock oscillations can be sustained; while for magnetic fields greater than 20 MG, the oscillations are suppressed.

We present an overview of the Southern-sky MWA Rapid Two-metre (SMART) pulsar survey that exploits the Murchison Widefield Array’s large field of view and voltage-capture system to survey the sky south of 30$^{\circ}$ in declination for pulsars and fast transients in the 140–170 MHz band. The survey is enabled by the advent of the Phase II MWA’s compact configuration, which offers an enormous efficiency in beam-forming and processing costs, thereby making an all-sky survey of this magnitude tractable with the MWA. Even with the long dwell times employed for the survey (4800 s), data collection can be completed in $<$100 h of telescope time, while still retaining the ability to reach a limiting sensitivity of $\sim$2–3 mJy (at 150 MHz, near zenith), which is effectively 3–5 times deeper than the previous-generation low-frequency southern-sky pulsar survey, completed in the 1990s. Each observation is processed to generate $\sim$5000–8000 tied-array beams that tessellate the full $\sim 610\, {\textrm{deg}^{2}}$ field of view (at 155 MHz), which are then processed to search for pulsars. The voltage-capture recording of the survey also allows a multitude of post hoc processing options including the reprocessing of data for higher time resolution and even exploring image-based techniques for pulsar candidate identification. Due to the substantial computational cost in pulsar searches at low frequencies, the survey data processing is undertaken in multiple passes: in the first pass, a shallow survey is performed, where 10 min of each observation is processed, reaching about one-third of the full-search sensitivity. Here we present the system overview including details of ongoing processing and initial results. Further details including first pulsar discoveries and a census of low-frequency detections are presented in a companion paper. Future plans include deeper searches to reach the full sensitivity and acceleration searches to target binary and millisecond pulsars. Our simulation analysis forecasts $\sim$300 new pulsars upon the completion of full processing. The SMART survey will also generate a complete digital record of the low-frequency sky, which will serve as a valuable reference for future pulsar searches planned with the low-frequency Square Kilometre Array.

During the last solar cycle a number of observations of solar radio emissions were made in a wide frequency range from which an enormous amount of information has been obtained. However the results obtained so far are limited by rather poor angular resolution. Observations with much higher resolution (of the order of 1′ arc) have been required for further studies of solar radio emissions. At the present stage such observations have proceeded in the microwave range; also the radioheliograph at 80 MHz has just started at the Culgoora Observatory. At the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory a high-resolution study of radio bursts in the metre-wave range has been planned since 1960, and the construction of a new compound interferometer operating at 160.3 MHz was started in April 1967 at a new site, Nobeyama. This site, located about 150 km north-west of Tokyo, is surrounded by mountains and quite free from man-made interference. We shall give a brief description of this equipment; details will be published later.

Meteor rates have been measured with a large HF Radar at a number of frequencies. At the top end of the HF band our results match those of Greenhow (1963). However at lower frequencies we find high echo rates which indicate that past observations measured only a few percent of the total meteor flux incident on the Earth’s atmosphere. This explains the ‘missing mass’ discrepancy observed when radar results are compared with satellite or visual data. Accounting for’this missing mass results in a four-fold increase in the calculated total meteoroid mass influx to the surface of the Earth from 4000 to 16,000 tonnes per year. Our results also imply that the majority of echoes originate from altitudes above 100 km.

Photometry of the short-period (P ∼0.285 d) low-mass (M1 ∼0.67, M2 ∼0.48 M⊙) W UMa-type eclipsing binary RW Dor, mainly involving a good series of observations in 1987–88, using standard B and V filters at the Auckland Observatory, is examined. Analysis via light curve fittings alone permits both transit (near main sequence) and occultation (W-type contact binary) solutions. Consideration of proximity or other effects on the relatively small number of measured radial velocities gives rise to a more detailed review of the alternatives, though the (W-type) configuration determined by Hilditch, Hill & Bell (1992) is still confirmed. Further implications of this configuration are examined, given an apparent general trend to period decrease (Δ P/P ∼6 × 10−11), and some light curve asymmetry. This is consistent with the initially low-mass companion, Case-B scenario of Budding (1984). The evidence does suggest irregularity of the period variation however, and further detailed surveillance, including more spectroscopy, is desirable.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect gravitational waves with frequencies from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. This article provides a brief overview of LISA's science goals followed by a tutorial of the LISA measurement concept.

The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope has carried out a survey of the entire Southern Sky at 887.5 MHz. The wide area, high angular resolution, and broad bandwidth provided by the low-band Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS-low) allow the production of a next-generation rotation measure (RM) grid across the entire Southern Sky. Here we introduce this project as Spectral and Polarisation in Cutouts of Extragalactic sources from RACS (SPICE-RACS). In our first data release, we image 30 RACS-low fields in Stokes I, Q, U at 25$^{\prime\prime}$ angular resolution, across 744–1032 MHz with 1 MHz spectral resolution. Using a bespoke, highly parallelised, software pipeline we are able to rapidly process wide-area spectro-polarimetric ASKAP observations. Notably, we use ‘postage stamp’ cutouts to assess the polarisation properties of 105912 radio components detected in total intensity. We find that our Stokes Q and U images have an rms noise of $\sim$80 $\unicode{x03BC}$Jy PSF$^{-1}$, and our correction for instrumental polarisation leakage allows us to characterise components with $\gtrsim$1% polarisation fraction over most of the field of view. We produce a broadband polarised radio component catalogue that contains 5818 RM measurements over an area of $\sim$1300 deg$^{2}$ with an average error in RM of $1.6^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$ rad m$^{-2}$, and an average linear polarisation fraction $3.4^{+3.0}_{-1.6}$ %. We determine this subset of components using the conditions that the polarised signal-to-noise ratio is $>$8, the polarisation fraction is above our estimated polarised leakage, and the Stokes I spectrum has a reliable model. Our catalogue provides an areal density of $4\pm2$ RMs deg$^{-2}$; an increase of $\sim$4 times over the previous state-of-the-art (Taylor, Stil, Sunstrum 2009, ApJ, 702, 1230). Meaning that, having used just 3% of the RACS-low sky area, we have produced the 3rd largest RM catalogue to date. This catalogue has broad applications for studying astrophysical magnetic fields; notably revealing remarkable structure in the Galactic RM sky. We will explore this Galactic structure in a follow-up paper. We will also apply the techniques described here to produce an all-Southern-sky RM catalogue from RACS observations. Finally, we make our catalogue, spectra, images, and processing pipeline publicly available.

Atraditional problem in pulsar wind physics has been the nature of the pulsar wind.Ontheoretical grounds, the wind is expected to be dominated by Poynting flux associated with the outgoing magnetic field lines anchored on the polar caps of the rotating neutron star, while observations of the Crab Nebula demonstrate that the wind must be dominated by kinetic energy before the termination shock. Here we suggest a new approach to this old problem by studying the distributed currents rather than the singular sheet currents which have been the object of study in most work.We find that, at a distance well in between the light cylinder and the termination shock, current starvation sets in, and electric fields develop along the magnetic field lines which cause the current to dissipate and convert at least half of the Poynting flux into kinetic energy flux in a relatively thin shell. In the shell, at least half of the current closes across the magnetic field lines, the pitch of the spiralling magnetic field lines jumps downward strongly, and the outer pattern of magnetic field lines slips over the inner pattern.

Equilibrium configurations of the internal magnetic field of a pulsar play a key role in modelling astrophysical phenomena from glitches to gravitational wave emission. In this paper, we present a numerical scheme for solving the Grad–Shafranov equation and calculating equilibrium configurations of pulsars, accounting for superconductivity in the core of the neutron star, and for the Hall effect in the crust of the star. Our numerical code uses a finite difference method in which the source term appearing in the Grad–Shafranov equation, which is used to model the magnetic equilibrium is non-linear. We obtain solutions by linearising the source and applying an under-relaxation scheme at each step of computation to improve the solver’s convergence. We have developed our code in both C++ and Python, and our numerical algorithm can further be adapted to solve any non-linear PDEs appearing in other areas of computational astrophysics. We produce mixed toroidal–poloidal field configurations, and extend the portion of parameter space that can be investigated with respect to previous studies. We find that in even in the more extreme cases, the magnetic energy in the toroidal component does not exceed approximately 5% of the total. We also find that if the core of the star is superconducting, the toroidal component is entirely confined to the crust of the star, which has important implications for pulsar glitch models which rely on the presence of a strong toroidal field region in the core of the star, where superfluid vortices pin to superconducting fluxtubes.

Student research projects are becoming either integral or optional components of Science curricula in several countries. They provide a valuable opportunity for high school students to experience many of the joys and frustrations that make up the intellectual challenge of Science. Astronomy is one branch of Science that lends itself to student projects. Student Research Projects (SRPs) can be individual, group or collaborative between groups in other schools or countries and may involve professional mentors. Use of the Internet and remote access telescopes allow students to undertake challenging research and make worthwhile contributions to professional programs. This paper presents case studies of student projects in optical and radio astronomy from Australian and overseas schools and details both the benefits and problems faced in conducting such projects. Student responses to involvement in projects are discussed. Potential areas for future collaboration and development are highlighted together with the need for more research as to the most effective ways to implement projects and develop student skills.

Medium-resolution (R ∼ 6500) spectra of 97 giant stars in the globu lar cluster 47 Tucanæ (47 Tuc) have been used to derive the C- and N-abundance sensitive index, δC, and to infer abundances of several key elements (Fe, Na, Si, Ca, Zr and Ba) for a sample of 13 of these stars with similar effective temperature ( Teff) and surface gravity (log g). These stars have stellar properties similar to the well-studied 47 Tuc giant star, Lee 2525, but with a range of CN excess (δC) values which are a measure of the CN abundance. The δC index is shown to be correlated with Na abundance for this sample, confirming previous studies. Fe, Ca, Si and the light and heavy s-process (slow neut ron capture) elements, Zr and Ba, respectively, have a narrow range of abundance values, indicative of a homogeneous abundance within this population of stars. The constancy of many element abundances (Fe, Si, Ca, Zr, Ba) and the δC and Na abundance correlation could imply that there has been a second era of star formation in this cluster that has revealed the products of CNO-cycle burning via hot bottom burning (depletion of C, enhancement of N and the production of Na for high δC population). But there is no overall metallicity change across the range of δC values at a given position in the HR diagram as has been seen in some other globular clusters.

Pulsars are unique astronomical objects in that their emission is in the form of a periodic pulse train. For most pulsars the pulse duty cycle is small, only a few per cent of the period. The shapes and intensities of individual pulses are in general quite variable. This is illustrated in Figure 1 which shows a series of individual pulses from PSR 1133 + 16. Despite this variation in shape of individual pulses, it is found that the mean or integrated pulse profile obtained by adding many pulses synchronously with the period is in most cases stable in shape.

We present maps in the visible emission lines of [S II] and the infrared emission lines of H2, at 2.12μm, for several bipolar outflow complexes which exhibit jet structures. A comparison of the morphology of this infrared emission and that seen in visible emission lines shows both the visible and the H2 emission exhibit clumpy structure on similar scales. It appears that the brightest H2 emission occurs at the working surfaces of the jets. Virtually no H2 emission is associated with the jets themselves.

Velocity profiles are presented for several objects and possible emission mechanisms are discussed.
