The 2MASS, UKIDSS-LAS, and VISTA VIKING surveys have all now observed the GAMA 9hr region in the Ks band. Here we compare the detection rates, photometry, basic size measurements, and single-component GALFIT structural measurements for a sample of 37 591 galaxies. We explore the sensitivity limits where the data agree for a variety of issues including: detection, star–galaxy separation, photometric measurements, size and ellipticity measurements, and Sérsic measurements. We find that 2MASS fails to detect at least 20% of the galaxy population within all magnitude bins, however for those that are detected we find photometry is robust (± 0.2 mag) to 14.7 AB mag and star–galaxy separation to 14.8 AB mag. For UKIDSS-LAS we find incompleteness starts to enter at a flux limit of 18.9 AB mag, star–galaxy separation is robust to 16.3 AB mag, and structural measurements are robust to 17.7 AB mag. VISTA VIKING data are complete to approximately 20.0 AB mag and structural measurements appear robust to 18.8 AB mag.

In this article, we present a galactic gravitational model of three degrees of freedom (3D), in order to study and reveal the character of the orbits of the stars, in a binary stellar system composed of a primary quiet or active galaxy and a small satellite companion galaxy. Our main dynamical analysis will be focused on the behaviour of the primary galaxy. We investigate in detail the regular or chaotic nature of motion, in two different cases: (i) the time-independent model in both 2D and 3D dynamical systems and (ii) the time-evolving 3D model. For the description of the structure of the 2D system, we use the classical method of the Poincaré (x, px), y = 0, py < 0 phase plane. In order to study the structure of the phase space of the 3D system, we take sections in the plane y = 0 of the 3D orbits, whose initial conditions differ from the plane parent periodic orbits, only by the z component. The set of the four-dimensional points in the (x, px, z, pz) phase space is projected on the (z, pz) plane. The maximum Lyapunov characteristic exponent is used in order to make an estimation of the chaoticity of our galactic system, in both 2D and 3D dynamical models. Our numerical calculations indicate that the percentage of the chaotic orbits increases when the primary galaxy has a dense and massive nucleus. The presence of the dense galactic core also increases the stellar velocities near the center of the galaxy. Moreover, for small values of the distance R between the two bodies, low-energy stars display chaotic motion, near the central region of the galaxy, while for larger values of the distance R, the motion in active galaxies is entirely regular for low-energy stars. Our simulations suggest that in galaxies with a satellite companion, the chaotic nature of motion is not only a result of the galactic interaction between the primary galaxy and its companion, but also a result caused by the presence of the dense nucleus in the core of the primary galaxy. Theoretical arguments are presented in order to support and interpret the numerically derived outcomes. Furthermore, we follow the 3D evolution of the primary galaxy, when mass is transported adiabatically from the disk to the nucleus. Our numerical results are in satisfactory agreement with observational data obtained from the M51-type binary stellar systems. A comparison between the present research and similar and earlier work is also made.

There is now evidence that there may be a strong source of cosmic ray particles in the general direction of the Galactic Centre. The likelihood is that the observed particles are neutrons with energies of about 1018 eV. Associated with the production of those neutrons, we would expect that large numbers of charged cosmic rays would also be produced, and we investigate here the directional properties of those charged particles as they may be observed at the distance of the Earth from the Galactic Centre. We follow the propagation of such particles through a simple Galactic magnetic field model with both a turbulent and a regular field to determine what field properties most affect the observed beam. It appears that the turbulent field component is crucial to any resulting charged particle observations.

A new feature in the form of a jet formed by close juxtaposition of a number of highly polarized, separately resolved 80 MHz sources was observed as the late phase of a very complex outburst on 1971 January 25. We present here a source model which, we think, can explain the observed source properties. The early phase, also complex and involving numerous moving sources, will be described first.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a new expression for < ṗ > the average time-rate-of-change of momentum of cosmic-ray particles propagating in the interplanetary region. The expression derived replaces the previously used adiabatic deceleration formula and it is arrived at by a rearrangement and reinterpretation of the well known equation of transport for cosmic-rays. Thus, although we provide a new expression for < ṗ > we maintain the equation of transport and do not render invalid results for differential intensity and differential current density of cosmic-ray particles obtained by its solution (Jokipii 1971; Gleeson 1972).

Roughly 25% of the optical extragalactic sky is obscured by the dust and stars of our Milky Way. Dynamically important structures might still lie hidden in this zone. Various surveys are presently being employed to uncover the galaxy distribution in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA), but all suffer from (different) limitations and selection effects. We illustrate the promise of using a multi-wavelength approach for extragalactic large-scale studies behind the ZOA, i.e. a combination of three surveys, optical, systematic blind HI and near-infrared (NIR), which will allow the mapping of the peculiar velocity field in the ZOA through the NIR Tully–Fisher relation. In particular, we present here the results of cross-identifying HI-detected galaxies with the DENIS NIR survey, and the use of NIR colours to determine foreground extinctions.

Stability of accretion onto magnetic white dwarfs is investigated via perturbation analysis. We consider a cooling function with composite power laws, and the power-law indices are appropriate for bremsstrahlung and optically thick cyclotron cooling. We find that the presence of cyclotron cooling generally suppresses the instability, consistent with numerical simulations by other investigators.

At 12:56 p.m., on Monday 21 July 1969 (AEST), six hundred million people witnessed Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the Moon through television pictures transmitted to Earth from the lunar module, Eagle. Three tracking stations were receiving the signals simultaneously. They were the CSIRO's Parkes Radio Telescope, the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station near Canberra, and NASA's Goldstone station in California. During the first nine minutes of the broadcast, NASA alternated between the signals being received by the three stations. When they switched to the Parkes pictures, they were of such superior quality that NASA remained with them for the rest of the 2-hour moonwalk. The television pictures from Parkes were received under extremely trying and dangerous conditions. A violent squall struck the telescope on the day of the historic moonwalk. The telescope was buffeted by strong winds that swayed the support tower and threatened the integrity of the telescope structure. Fortunately, cool heads prevailed and as Aldrin activated the TV camera, the Moon rose into the field-of-view of the Parkes telescope. This report endeavours to explain the circumstances of the Parkes Observatory's support of the Apollo 11 mission, and how it came to be involved in the historic enterprise.

In simulations of gas flow in the gravitational field of model barred galaxies which we have described elsewhere, structures resembling inner rings have formed. The model rings encircle the bar as observed in real galaxies, but are more elongated than the average inner ring. In this paper we show that the addition of a lens-like component to the background field results in much rounder rings. Indeed the shape and position of the model rings are very sensitive to any steep gradients in the azimuthally averaged surface density near the ends of the bar.

This paper is the fourth in a series of low-frequency searches for technosignatures. Using the Murchison Widefield Array over two nights, we integrate 7 h of data toward the Galactic Centre (centred on the position of Sagittarius $\mathrm{A}^{*}$ ) with a total field-of-view of $200\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ . We present a targeted search toward 144 exoplanetary systems, at our best yet angular resolution (75 arcsec). This is the first technosignature search at a central frequency of 155 MHz toward the Galactic Centre (our previous central frequencies have been lower). A blind search toward in excess of 3 million stars toward the Galactic Centre and Galactic bulge is also completed, placing an equivalent isotropic power limit $<\!1.1\times10^{19}\,\mathrm{W}$ at the distance to the Galactic Centre. No plausible technosignatures are detected.

Massive, early-type stars have been detected as radio sources for many decades. Their thermal winds radiate free–free continuum and in binary systems hosting a colliding-wind region, non-thermal emission has also been detected. To date, the most abundant data have been collected from frequencies higher than 1 GHz. We present here the results obtained from observations at 325 and 610 MHz, carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, of all known Wolf-Rayet and O-type stars encompassed in area of $\sim$ 15 sq degrees centred on the Cygnus region. We report on the detection of 11 massive stars, including both Wolf-Rayet and O-type systems. The measured flux densities at decimeter wavelengths allowed us to study the radio spectrum of the binary systems and to propose a consistent interpretation in terms of physical processes affecting the wide-band radio emission from these objects. WR 140 was detected at 610 MHz, but not at 325 MHz, very likely because of the strong impact of free–free absorption (FFA). We also report—for the first time—on the detection of a colliding-wind binary system down to 150 MHz, pertaining to the system of WR 146, making use of complementary information extracted from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research GMRT Sky Survey. Its spectral energy distribution clearly shows the turnover at a frequency of about 600 MHz, that we interpret to be due to FFA. Finally, we report on the identification of two additional particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries, namely Cyg OB2 12 and ALS 15108 AB.

We present preliminary results from HI observations of a new sample of compact groups done with the Parkes telescope, as well as from images made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations confirm earlier claims that a significant fraction of compact groups are deficient in HI, and hence that a significant fraction of groups of galaxies that appear compact on the sky are indeed compact systems. The ATCA observations of a very HI-poor group suggest that this group is a true compact system in an advanced stage of evolution. However, the ATCA observations also show that HI-rich groups exist that are genuinely compact.

We estimate spatial gradients in the ionosphere using the Global Positioning System and GLONASS (Russian global navigation system) observations, utilising data from multiple Global Positioning System stations in the vicinity of Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory. In previous work, the ionosphere was characterised using a single-station to model the ionosphere as a single layer of fixed height and this was compared with ionospheric data derived from radio astronomy observations obtained from the Murchison Widefield Array. Having made improvements to our data quality (via cycle slip detection and repair) and incorporating data from the GLONASS system, we now present a multi-station approach. These two developments significantly improve our modelling of the ionosphere. We also explore the effects of a variable-height model. We conclude that modelling the small-scale features in the ionosphere that have been observed with the MWA will require a much denser network of Global Navigation Satellite System stations than is currently available at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory.

III Zw 2 shows dramatic radio outbursts roughly every five years. Here we present the light curves and VLBA observations of the latest flare with an excellent time sampling. We have detected superluminal motion with a lower limit for the apparent expansion speed of 1.25±0.09 c at 43 GHz. Spectral and spatial evolution are closely linked and the evolution of III Zw 2 in a turnover frequency vs. linear size diagram is similar to the correlation for GPS and CSS sources. Before and after this rapid expansion we observe a period of virtually no expansion. However, at 15 GHz III Zw 2 shows a constant slow expansion (∼0.6 c). The difference is qualitatively explained by optical depth effects in an ‘inflating-balloon model’, describing the evolution of radio lobes on an ultra-compact scale. The stop-and-go behaviour could be explained by a jet interacting with a molecular cloud or the molecular torus.

A large proportion of the easily accessible radio astronomy spectrum lies between 50 MHz and a lower limit of about 1 MHz set by interstellar absorption. The features of the spectrum in this frequency range, from sources such as the galaxy, extragalactic sources, pulsars, the Sun and Jupiter, remain only partially explored mainly owing to the large sizes of telescopes necessary to obtain adequate angular resolution and sensitivity. In addition, below 20 MHz, interference from man-made radiation and from the ionosphere severely hinders observations. At the lowest frequencies, the effects of the ionosphere can be overcome by using earth satellite telescopes at the expense of greatly increased difficulty in attaining sufficient telescope aperture.

About 1 km to the east of the township of Windsor, NSW and only 50 ft above mean tide level, stands the remains of one of the first observatories in Australia. Here John Tebbutt established his private observatory and for over 60 years continued a remarkable career as a gentleman astronomer in the best tradition of 19th century Europe.

We present the first Southern-Hemisphere all-sky imager and radio-transient monitoring system implemented on two prototype stations of the low-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low). Since its deployment, the system has been used for real-time monitoring of the recorded commissioning data. Additionally, a transient searching algorithm has been executed on the resulting all-sky images. It uses a difference imaging technique to enable identification of a wide variety of transient classes, ranging from human-made radio-frequency interference to genuine astrophysical events. Observations at the frequency 159.375 MHz and higher in a single coarse channel ( $\approx$ 0.926 MHz) were made with 2 s time resolution, and multiple nights were analysed generating thousands of images. Despite having modest sensitivity ( $\sim$ few Jy beam–1), using a single coarse channel and 2-s imaging, the system was able to detect multiple bright transients from PSR B0950+08, proving that it can be used to detect bright transients of an astrophysical origin. The unusual, extreme activity of the pulsar PSR B0950+08 (maximum flux density $\sim$ 155 Jy beam–1) was initially detected in a ‘blind’ search in the 2020 April 10/11 data and later assigned to this specific pulsar. The limitations of our data, however, prevent us from making firm conclusions of the effect being due to a combination of refractive and diffractive scintillation or intrinsic emission mechanisms. The system can routinely collect data over many days without interruptions; the large amount of recorded data at 159.375 and 229.6875 MHz allowed us to determine a preliminary transient surface density upper limit of $1.32 \times 10^{-9} \text{deg}^{-2}$ for a timescale and limiting flux density of 2 s and 42 Jy, respectively. In the future, we plan to extend the observing bandwidth to tens of MHz and improve time resolution to tens of milliseconds in order to increase the sensitivity and enable detections of fast radio bursts below 300 MHz.

There are many reasons why it is important to increase the number of known pulsars. Not only do pulsar searches continue to improve statistical estimates of, for example, pulsar birthrates, lifetimes and the Galactic distribution, but they continue to turn up interesting and, in some cases, unique individual pulsars. In the early days of pulsar astronomy, the Molonglo radio telescope led the world as a pulsar detection instrument. However, the Parkes radio telescope, with its frequency versatility and greater tracking ablility, combined with sensitive receivers and powerful computer detection algorithms, is now the world’s most successful telescope at finding pulsars. The Parkes multibeam survey, begun in 1997, by itself will come close to doubling the number of known pulsars. Parkes has also been very successful at finding millisecond pulsars (MSPs), especially in globular clusters. One third of the known MSPs have been found in just one cluster, 47 Tucanae.

Zeeman Doppler Imaging (ZDI) is a recent technique for measuring magnetic fields on rapidly rotating, active stars. ZDI employs spectropolarimetry taken at different rotational phases to derive information on the magnetic field distribution over the stellar surface. The Zeeman effect is used to identify the presence of a magnetic field, and variations in Doppler wavelength shifts across the rapidly rotating star allow fields to be resolved on different parts of the visible disk. Analysis of the spectra can be used to produce both thermal and surface magnetic images. ZDI requires very high S/N spectra to be acquired within a time interval short compared to the stellar rotation period. As a result, a large-aperture telescope is needed. Since an initial successful test in 1989, the 3·9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope has been used to obtain ZDI spectra of active stars of different evolutionary stages. The observations have concentrated on the K subgiant in the RSCVn system HR 1099 to monitor changes on this bright and active star. With the advent in 1991 of ZDI spectropolarimetry with the AAT échelle spectrograph, it has become possible to co-add the polarisation signature from the many magnetically sensitive lines recorded simultaneously. As a result, stellar magnetic field detections of unprecedented quality have been obtained. The aims of this paper are to briefly outline the principles of ZDI, describe the instrumental setup at the AAT and present some preliminary results from recent observations.

The Zadko telescope is a 1 m f/4 Cassegrain telescope, situated in the state of Western Australia about 80-km north of Perth. The facility plays a niche role in Australian astronomy, as it is the only meter class facility in Australia dedicated to automated follow-up imaging of alerts or triggers received from different external instruments/detectors spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Furthermore, the location of the facility at a longitude not covered by other meter class facilities provides an important resource for time critical projects. This paper reviews the status of the Zadko facility and science projects since it began robotic operations in March 2010. We report on major upgrades to the infrastructure and equipment (2012–2014) that has resulted in significantly improved robotic operations. Second, we review the core science projects, which include automated rapid follow-up of gamma ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows, imaging of neutrino counterpart candidates from the ANTARES neutrino observatory, photometry of rare (Barbarian) asteroids, supernovae searches in nearby galaxies. Finally, we discuss participation in newly commencing international projects, including the optical follow-up of gravitational wave (GW) candidates from the United States and European GW observatory network and present first tests for very low latency follow-up of fast radio bursts. In the context of these projects, we outline plans for a future upgrade that will optimise the facility for alert triggered imaging from the radio, optical, high-energy, neutrino, and GW bands.
