We present the fourth data release (DR4) of the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), the last major step in our hemispheric survey with six optical filters: u, v, g, r, i, z. SMSS DR4 covers 26 000 deg$^{2}$ from over 400 000 images acquired by the 1.3 m SkyMapper telescope between 2014-03 and 2021-09. The 6-band sky coverage extends from the South Celestial Pole to $\delta=+16^{\circ}$, with some images reaching $\delta\sim +28^{\circ}$. In contrast to previous DRs, we include all good-quality images from the facility taken during that time span, not only those explicitly taken for the public Survey. From the image dataset, we produce a catalogue of over 15 billion detections made from $\sim$700 million unique astrophysical objects. The typical 10$\sigma$ depths for each field range between 18.5 and 20.5 mag, depending on the filter, but certain sky regions include longer exposures that reach as deep as 22 mag in some filters. As with previous SMSS catalogues, we have cross-matched with a host of other imaging and spectroscopic datasets to facilitate additional science outcomes. SMSS DR4 is now available to the worldwide astronomical community.

Taking into account the results obtained from the models and analyses of the BVRI light curves, we discuss the nature of V1464 Aql. The analyses indicated that the mass ratio of the system is q = 0.71 ± 0.02, while the inclination of the system (i) is 38°.45 ± 0°.22. Taking the primary component’s temperature as 7420 ± 192 K, we found that the temperature of the secondary is 6232 ± 161 K. The mass of the primary component was found to be 1.74 ± 0.05 M⊙, while it is 1.23 ± 0.01 M⊙ for the secondary. The primary component’s radius was found to be 2.10 ± 0.05 R⊙, while it was found as 1.80 ± 0.01 R⊙ for the secondary. Revealing that the system should not exhibit any eclipses, we demonstrated that the main variation with large amplitude should be caused due to the ellipsoidal effect. Indeed, the Fourier analysis also supported the result. For the first time in the literature, we revealed that the primary component is a δ Scuti star. The period of pulsation was found to be 58.482 ± 0.002, 58.482 ± 0.001, 60.966 ± 0.002, and 60.964 ± 0.003 min in BVRI bands, respectively. We plotted V1464 Aql in the log (Porb)–log (Ppulse) plane. Using more than 160 binaries, whose one or both components are pulsating, we derived a new linear fit in the log (Porb)–log (Ppulse) plane for each type of binary. Using the linear fit of each group, we obtained new calibrations between log (Porb) and log (Ppulse) for different types of pulsating stars. In addition, a calibration has been obtained for the first time for the pulsating stars with spectral types O and B. V1464 Aql seems to be located near the other ellipsoidal and close binaries. Thus, we listed V1464 Aql as a new candidate for the ellipsoidal variables with a δ Scuti component.

One of the principal systematic constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) experiment is the accuracy of the foreground calibration model. Recent results have shown that highly accurate models of extended foreground sources, and including models for sources in both the primary beam and its sidelobes, are necessary for reducing foreground power. To improve the accuracy of the source models for the EoR fields observed by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), we conducted the MWA Long Baseline Epoch of Reionisation Survey (LoBES). This survey consists of multi-frequency observations of the main MWA EoR fields and their eight neighbouring fields using the MWA Phase II extended array. We present the results of the first half of this survey centred on the MWA EoR0 observing field (centred at RA (J2000) $0^\mathrm{h}$ , Dec (J2000) $-27^{\circ}$ ). This half of the survey covers an area of 3 069 degrees $^2$ , with an average rms of 2.1 mJy beam–1. The resulting catalogue contains a total of 80 824 sources, with 16 separate spectral measurements between 100 and 230 MHz, and spectral modelling for 78 $\%$ of these sources. Over this region we estimate that the catalogue is 90 $\%$ complete at 32 mJy, and 70 $\%$ complete at 10.5 mJy. The overall normalised source counts are found to be in good agreement with previous low-frequency surveys at similar sensitivities. Testing the performance of the new source models we measure lower residual rms values for peeled sources, particularly for extended sources, in a set of MWA Phase I data. The 2-dimensional power spectrum of these data residuals also show improvement on small angular scales—consistent with the better angular resolution of the LoBES catalogue. It is clear that the LoBES sky models improve upon the current sky model used by the Australian MWA EoR group for the EoR0 field.

Site measurements were collected at Mount John University Observatory in 2005 and 2007 using a purpose-built scintillation detection and ranging system. C2N(h) profiling indicates a weak layer located at 12–14 km above sea level and strong low altitude turbulence extending up to 5 km. During calm weather conditions, an additional layer was detected at 6–8 km above sea level. V(h) profiling suggests that tropopause layer velocities are nominally 12–30m s−1, and near-ground velocities range between 2 and 20m s−1, dependent on weather. Little seasonal variation was detected in either C2N(h) and V(h) profiles. The average coherence length, r0, was found to be 7±1 cm for the full profile at a wavelength of 589 nm. The average isoplanatic angle, θ0, was 1.0±0.1 arcsec. The mean turbulence altitude, , was found to be 2.0±0.7 km above sea level. No average in the Greenwood frequency, fG, could be established due to the gaps present in the V(h) profiles obtained. A modified Hufnagel-Valley model was developed to describe the C2N(h) profiles at Mount John, which estimates r0 at 6 cm and θ0 at 0.9 arcsec. A series of V(h) models were developed, based on the Greenwood wind model with an additional peak located at low altitudes. Using the C2N(h) model and the suggested V(h) model for moderate ground wind speeds, fG is estimated at 79 Hz.

A Hα flare (12°N., 49°W.) on 1968 August 23d23h45m was followed by a short-lived type II burst whose dynamic spectrum, as recorded with the Culgoora radio-spectrograph, is shown in Figure 1. The type II burst had split-band structure; the upper band drifted from 130 MHz to 80 MHz, the lower band from 100 MHz to below 80 MHz (at the time the 25-74 MHz band of the spectrograph was less sensitive than the 74-220 MHz). Unusual spectral features can be seen in each split band. The most remarkable one is an absorption feature between 23h52m02s and 23h52m 10s – the depression in the bright type II emission along an ‘inverted U’ (between 120 and 85 MHz). Several other similar, though less marked, absorption features can be found between 23h51m45s and 23h52m30s.

A test of a new Bayesian approach to solar flare prediction is presented. The approach uses the past history of flaring together with phenomenological rules of flare statistics to make a prediction for the probability of occurrence of a large flare within an interval of time, or to refine an initial prediction (which may incorporate other information). The test of the method is based on data from the Geostationary Observational Environmental Satellites, and involves whole-Sun prediction of soft X-ray flares for 1976–2003. The results show that the method somewhat over-predicts the probability of all events above a moderate size, but performs well in predicting large events.

The interaction of planetary nebulae (PNe) with the interstellar medium (ISM) as they move through it is now acknowledged to be a major shaping effect not just for ancient and large PNe, but also for relatively young PNe with high-speed central stars. The most common effect is a rebrightening as the PN shell interacts with a pre-existing bow-shock structure formed during the previous evolutionary phase of the central star. In this review we consider this rebrightening in detail for the first time and discuss its origins, highlighting some observed examples. We go on to discuss the AGB progenitor stars, reviewing the evidence for bow-shock structures, and consider the progeny of rebrightened PNe — strongly disrupted objects which bear very little resemblance to typical PNe. Sh 2-68 is inferred to be perhaps the only documented case so far of such a PN.

We communicate the discovery of a new globular cluster in the Galaxy that was first detected on WISE/2MASS images and is now confirmed with VVVX photometry. It is a Palomar-like cluster projected at ℓ = 359.15°, b = 5.73°, and may be related to the bulge. We derive an absolute magnitude of MV ≈ −3.3, thus being an underluminous globular cluster. Our analyses provide a reddening of E(B − V) = 1.08 ± 0.18 and a distance to the Sun d⊙ = 6.3 ± 1 kpc, which implies a current position in the bulge volume. The estimated metallicity is [Fe/H] = −1.5 ± 0.25. It adds to the recently discovered faint globular cluster (Minniti 22) and candidates found with VVV, building up expectations of ≈50 globular clusters yet to be discovered in the bulge. We also communicate the discovery of an old open cluster in the same VVVX tile as the globular cluster. The VVVX photometry provided E(B − V) = 0.62 ± 0.1, d⊙ = 7.6 ± 1 kpc, and an age of 1.5 ± 0.3 Gyr. With a height from the plane of ≈0.8 kpc, it adds to nine Gyr-class clusters recently discovered within 0.8 ⩽ Z ⩽ 2.2 kpc, as recently probed in the single VVV tile b201. We suggest that these findings may be disclosing the thick disk at the bulge, which so far has no open cluster counterpart, and hardly any individual star. Thus, the VVV and VVVX surveys are opening new windows for follow-up studies, to employ present and future generations of large aperture telescopes.

As part of an investigation of solar radio bursts at high time (≈ 1 msec) and frequency (≈ 10 kHz) resolution, observations have been made between 30 MHz with the Llanherne broadband radio telescope (Ferris 1980). The radio frequency signals in the six frequency ranges 30-33, 33-36, 38-41, 54-57 and 79-82 MHz were recorded on six video tape recorders for about 10 minutes each day near solar transit.

High resolution HI observations of nearby dwarf galaxies (most of which are situated in the M81 group at a distance of about 3·2 Mpc) reveal that their neutral interstellar medium (ISM) is dominated by hole-like features most of which are expanding. A comparison of the physical properties of these holes with the ones found in more massive spiral galaxies (such as M31 and M33) shows that they tend to reach much larger sizes in dwarf galaxies. This can be understood in terms of the galaxy's gravitational potential. The origin of these features is still a matter of debate. In general, young star forming regions (OB-associations) are held responsible for their formation. This picture, however, is not without its critics and other mechanisms such as the infall of high velocity clouds, turbulent motions or even gamma ray bursters have been recently proposed. Here I will present one example of a supergiant shell in IC 2574 which corroborates the picture that OB associations are indeed creating these structures. This particular supergiant shell is currently the most promising case to study the effects of the combined effects of stellar winds and supernova explosions which shape the neutral interstellar medium of (dwarf) galaxies.

The detection of fireballs streaks in astronomical imagery can be carried out by a variety of methods. The Desert Fireball Network uses a network of cameras to track and triangulate incoming fireballs to recover meteorites with orbits and to build a fireball orbital dataset. Fireball detection is done on-board camera, but due to the design constraints imposed by remote deployment, the cameras are limited in processing power and time. We describe the processing software used for fireball detection under these constrained circumstances. Two different approaches were compared: (1) A single-layer neural network with 10 hidden units that were trained using manually selected fireballs and (2) a more traditional computational approach based on cascading steps of increasing complexity, whereby computationally simple filters are used to discard uninteresting portions of the images, allowing for more computationally expensive analysis of the remainder. Both approaches allowed a full night’s worth of data (over a thousand 36-megapixel images) to be processed each day using a low-power single-board computer. We distinguish between large (likely meteorite-dropping) fireballs and smaller fainter ones (typical ‘shooting stars’). Traditional processing and neural network algorithms both performed well on large fireballs within an approximately 30 000-image dataset, with a true positive detection rate of 96% and 100%, respectively, but the neural network was significantly more successful at smaller fireballs, with rates of 67% and 82%, respectively. However, this improved success came at a cost of significantly more false positives for the neural network results, and additionally the neural network does not produce precise fireball coordinates within an image (as it classifies). Simple consideration of the network geometry indicates that overall detection rate for triangulated large fireballs is calculated to be better than 99.7% and 99.9%, by ensuring that there are multiple double-station opportunities to detect any one fireball. As such, both algorithms are considered sufficient for meteor-dropping fireball event detection, with some consideration of the acceptable number of false positives compared to sensitivity.

We analysed Chandra observations of the bright Fermi pulsar J0633+0632 and found evidence of an absorption feature in its spectrum at 804+42−26 eV (the errors are at 90% confidence) with equivalent width of 63+47−36 eV. In addition, we analysed in detail the X-ray spectral continuum taking into account correlations between the interstellar absorption and the distance to the source. We confirm early findings that the spectrum contains non-thermal and thermal components. The latter is equally well described by the blackbody and magnetised atmosphere models and can be attributed to the emission from the bulk of the stellar surface in both cases. The distance to the pulsar is constrained in a range of 1–4 kpc from the spectral fits. We infer the blackbody surface temperature of 108+22−14 eV, while for the atmosphere model, the temperature, as seen by a distant observer, is 53+12−7 eV. In the latter case, J0633+0632 is one of the coldest middle-aged isolated neutron stars. Finally, it powers an extended pulsar wind nebula whose shape suggests a high pulsar proper motion. Looking backwards the direction of the presumed proper motion, we found a likely birthplace of the pulsar—the Rosette nebula, a 50-Myr-old active star-forming region located at about 1.5° from the pulsar. If true, this constrains the distance to the pulsar in the range of 1.2–1.8 kpc.

The radio source, Cen A, is large and complex with many peaks in the brightness distribution over an area about 4 x 10 degrees. The peculiar elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 lies between the two strong inner radio brightness peaks and is centred on a weaker central radio source. This radio source is in the centre of the dust lane which divides the galaxy and may be related to the infrared, X-ray and γ-ray sources.

We examine the historical development of astrophysical science in Antarctica from the early 20th century until today. We find three temporally overlapping eras, each having a rather distinct beginning. These are the astrogeological era of meteorite discovery, the high energy era of particle detectors, and the photon astronomy era of microwave, submillimetre, and infrared telescopes, sidelined by a few niche experiments at optical wavelengths. The favourable atmospheric and geophysical conditions are briefly examined, followed by an account of the major experiments and a summary of their results.

The evidence in support of interstellar scintillation as the predominant cause of intraday variations at centimetre wavelengths is reviewed. A new evaluation of the highest brightness temperature implied for AGN is found to be consistent with the Doppler factors in typical jet models, but requires the scattering to occur within about 30 pc of the Earth.

Faraday complexity describes whether a spectropolarimetric observation has simple or complex magnetic structure. Quickly determining the Faraday complexity of a spectropolarimetric observation is important for processing large, polarised radio surveys. Finding simple sources lets us build rotation measure grids, and finding complex sources lets us follow these sources up with slower analysis techniques or further observations. We introduce five features that can be used to train simple, interpretable machine learning classifiers for estimating Faraday complexity. We train logistic regression and extreme gradient boosted tree classifiers on simulated polarised spectra using our features, analyse their behaviour, and demonstrate our features are effective for both simulated and real data. This is the first application of machine learning methods to real spectropolarimetry data. With 95% accuracy on simulated ASKAP data and 90% accuracy on simulated ATCA data, our method performs comparably to state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks while being simpler and easier to interpret. Logistic regression trained with our features behaves sensibly on real data and its outputs are useful for sorting polarised sources by apparent Faraday complexity.

We present the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) Pilot Phase I Hi kinematic models. This first data release consists of Hi observations of three fields in the direction of the Hydra and Norma clusters, and the NGC 4636 galaxy group. In this paper, we describe how we generate and publicly release flat-disk tilted-ring kinematic models for 109/592 unique Hi detections in these fields. The modelling method adopted here—which we call the WALLABY Kinematic Analysis Proto-Pipeline (WKAPP) and for which the corresponding scripts are also publicly available—consists of combining results from the homogeneous application of the FAT and 3DBarolo algorithms to the subset of 209 detections with sufficient resolution and $S/N$ in order to generate optimised model parameters and uncertainties. The 109 models presented here tend to be gas rich detections resolved by at least 3–4 synthesised beams across their major axes, but there is no obvious environmental bias in the modelling. The data release described here is the first step towards the derivation of similar products for thousands of spatially resolved WALLABY detections via a dedicated kinematic pipeline. Such a large publicly available and homogeneously analysed dataset will be a powerful legacy product that that will enable a wide range of scientific studies.

This paper evaluates the COSMOS database as a tool for large-scale automated optical identification programs. Firstly, we explore the limitations inherent in the database by a study of regions centred on clusters of galaxies. We then perform an automated search in the database for a sample of previously measured optical objects and compare the properties of corresponding objects. Finally, we describe a set of new plotting routines in AIPS (Astronomical Image Processing System) designed to plot COSMOS-derived ellipses and, optionally, magnitudes onto radio images.

This paper presents and discusses the results of basic source finding tests in three dimensions (using spectroscopic data cubes) with duchamp, the standard source finder for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. For this purpose, we generated different sets of unresolved and extended Hi model sources. These models were then fed into duchamp, using a range of different parameters and methods provided by the software. The main aim of the tests was to study the performance of duchamp on sources with different parameters and morphologies and assess the accuracy of duchamp's source parametrisation. Overall, we find duchamp to be a powerful source finder capable of reliably detecting sources down to low signal-to-noise ratios and accurately measuring their position and velocity. In the presence of noise in the data, duchamp's measurements of basic source parameters, such as spectral line width and integrated flux, are affected by systematic errors. These errors are a consequence of the effect of noise on the specific algorithms used by duchamp for measuring source parameters in combination with the fact that the software only takes into account pixels above a given flux threshold and hence misses part of the flux. In scientific applications of duchamp these systematic errors would have to be corrected for. Alternatively, duchamp could be used as a source finder only, and source parametrisation could be done in a second step using more sophisticated parametrisation algorithms.

It has been accepted since the mid-1950’s that the LMC is a flat rotating body, with its plane inclined at an angle of about 27° to the line of sight and so nearly face on, and its line of nodes running 10° west of north (de Vaucouleurs and Freeman 1972). The inclination is inferred from the ellipticity of the outermost optical and radio isophotes but there has been no convincing way to fix its sense — whether the E or W side is nearer. Some years ago the late Dr David Thackeray suggested to one of us (SCBG) that this could be done by comparing the magnitudes of cepheids on the extreme E and W sides of the Cloud. With the discovery of the Magellanic Stream and the great increase of interest in the spatial geometry and dynamics of the Clouds and Galaxy complex, the sense of the tilt of the LMC has become a matter of importance, and we decided to go ahead with the project.
