Modelling of extreme scattering events suggests that the Galaxy's dark matter is an undetected population of cold, AU-sized, planetary-mass gas clouds. None of the direct observational constraints on this picture—thermal/non-thermal emission, extinction and lensing—are problematic. The theoretical situation is less comfortable, but still satisfactory. Galactic clouds can survive in their current condition for billions of years, but we do not have a firm description for either their origin or their evolution to the present epoch. We hypothesise that the proto-clouds formed during the quark–hadron phase transition, thereby introducing the inhomogeneity necessary for compatibility with light element nucleosynthesis in a purely baryonic universe. We outline the prospects for directly detecting the inferred cloud population. The most promising signatures are cosmic-ray-induced Hα emission from clouds in the solar neighbourhood, optical and X-ray flashes arising from cloud–cloud collisions, ultraviolet extinction, and three varieties of lensing phenomena.

The extended radio source 0319-453 (MSH 03-43) was observed with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope as part of a program to study a large sample of southern extragalactic radio sources. The low level structure showed a ridge pointing towards the nearby source 0317-456, which also showed low level structure. It is suggested that the two sources are the asymmetric lobes of a radio galaxy identified with the magnitude 15 peculiar dust-land galaxy AM 0319-452. The galaxy redshift of z = 0.0633 and the radio size of 25.6 arcmin give a projected size of 1.27 Mpc (H = 100 kms−1 Mpc−1). Thus it is one of the largest radio galaxies.

We assemble a sample of galaxy clusters whose brightest members are dumbbell galaxies and compare them with a control sample in order to investigate if they are the result of recent mergers. We show that the dumbbell sample is no more likely than other clusters to exhibit subclustering. However, they are much more likely to have at least one dumbbell component possessing a significant peculiar velocity with respect to the parent cluster than a non-dumbbell brightest cluster member. We interpret this in the context of seeing the clusters at various stages of post-merger relaxation.

We describe the dynamical behavior of isolated old ( ⩾ 1Gyr) objects-like Neutron Stars (NSs). These objects are evolved under smooth, time-independent, gravitational potentials, axisymmetric and with a triaxial dark halo. We analysed the geometry of the dynamics and applied the Poincaré section for comparing the influence of different birth velocities. The inspection of the maximal asymptotic Lyapunov (λ) exponent shows that dynamical behaviors of the selected orbits are nearly the same as the regular orbits with 2-DOF, both in axisymmetric and triaxial when (ϕ, qz)= (0,0). Conversely, a few chaotic trajectories are found with a rotated triaxial halo when (ϕ, qz)= (90, 1.5). The tube orbits preserve direction of their circulation around either the long or short axis as appeared in the triaxial potential, even when every initial condition leads to different orientations. The Poincaré section shows that there are 2-D invariant tori and invariant curves (islands) around stable periodic orbits that bound to the surface of 3-D tori. The regularity of several prototypical orbits offer the means to identify the phase-space regions with localized motions and to determine their environment in different models, because they can occupy significant parts of phase-space depending on the potential. This is of particular importance in Galactic Dynamics.

Lower hybrid (LH) drive involves the resonant acceleration of electrons parallel to the magnetic field by lower hybrid waves, often driven by ions with ring or ring-beam distributions. Charge-exchange between hydrogen atoms and protons with relative motions perpendicular to the magnetic field leads to ring distributions of pickup ions, with concomitant perpedicular ion ‘heating’. This paper considers the combination of LH drive and charge-exchange in the outflow regions of magnetic reconnection sites in the solar chromosphere and lower corona, showing that the combined mechanism naturally predicts major perpendicular ion heating and parallel electron acceleration, and exploring the mechanism’s relevance to specific solar reconnection phenomena, heating of the solar atmosphere, and production of energetic electrons that generate solar radio emission. Although primarily qualitative, analysis shows that the mechanism has numerous attractive aspects, including perpendicular ion heating that increases linearly with ion mass, parallel electron acceleration, predicted ion and electron temperatures that span those of the chromosphere and lower corona, and parallel electron speeds spanning those for type III bursts. Applications to chromospheric explosive events and low-lying active regions, and to heating the chromosphere, appear particularly suitable. Sweeping of plasma frozen-in to chromospheric and coronal magnetic field lines across the neutral atmosphere due to motions of sub-photospheric fields represents an obvious and important generalisation of the mechanism away from reconnection sites. The requirements that the neutrals not be strongly collisionally coupled to the plasma and that sufficient neutrals are available for charge-exchange restricts the LH drive mechanism to above the photosphere but below where the corona is essentially fully ionised. LH drive may thus be important in heating the chromosphere and low corona while other heating mechanisms dominate at higher altitudes. Although attractive thus far, quantitative analyses of LH drive in these contexts are necessary before definitive conclusions are reached.

We present the South Galactic Pole (SGP) data release from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. These data combine both years of GLEAM observations at 72–231 MHz conducted with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and cover an area of 5 113$\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ centred on the SGP at $20^{\mathrm{h}} 40^{\mathrm{m}} < \mathrm{RA} < 05^{\mathrm{h}} 04^{\mathrm{m}}$ and $-48^{\circ} < \mathrm{Dec} < -2^{\circ} $. At 216 MHz, the typical rms noise is ${\approx}5$ mJy beam–1 and the angular resolution ${\approx}2$ arcmin. The source catalogue contains a total of 108 851 components above $5\sigma$, of which 77% have measured spectral indices between 72 and 231 MHz. Improvements to the data reduction in this release include the use of the GLEAM Extragalactic catalogue as a sky model to calibrate the data, a more efficient and automated algorithm to deconvolve the snapshot images, and a more accurate primary beam model to correct the flux scale. This data release enables more sensitive large-scale studies of extragalactic source populations as well as spectral variability studies on a one-year timescale.

A cloud with a l.s.r. velocity of ∼ 160 km s-1 and a half-width of ∼ 25 km s-1 was mapped in the (1,1), (2,2) and (4,4) lines of para NH3 and the (3,3) and (6,6) lines of ortho NH3 using the 40″ arc beam of the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. The cloud was extended some 5′ in latitude and contained a central concentration ∼ 1′.5 in size at ℓ = 1°.59; b=0°.01. Line temperatures of the four higher transitions define a rotational temperature of ∼ 120 K, while the (1,1) and (2,2) alone yield the lower value of ∼ 40 K. The high temperatures, well above that of the dust, are too high to be caused by collisions with H2 molecules in the ground state, but might result from collisions with H2 in excited states. On a (ℓ, v) plot the cloud does not coincide with any generally accepted galactic centre feature but it is possibly located near the periphery of the ‘rotating nuclear disk’, where conditions would be favourable for the production of shocks, excited H2 and possibly high NH3 temperatures.

We investigate the regular or chaotic nature of orbits of stars moving in the meridional plane (R, z) of an axially symmetric galactic model with a dense, massive spherical nucleus and a dark matter halo component. In particular, we study the influence of the fractional portion of the dark matter, by computing in each case the percentage of chaotic orbits, as well as the percentages of orbits of the main regular resonant families. In an attempt to distinguish between regular and chaotic motion, we use the fast Lyapunov indicator method to extensive samples of orbits obtained by integrating numerically the equations of motion as well as the variational equations. Furthermore, a technique which is based mainly on the field of spectral dynamics that utilises the Fourier transform of the time series of each coordinate is used for identifying the various families of regular orbits and also to recognise the secondary resonances that bifurcate from them. Two cases are studied in our work: (i) the case where we have a disk galaxy model and (ii) the case where our model represents an elliptical galaxy. A comparison with early related work is also made.

This paper presents results from speckle observations of binary stars carried out between 1987 and 1990 using a 212-cm telescope at the San Pedro Martir Observatory, Mexico.

Radial-velocity observations accumulated during the past 16 years are used to derive a preliminary orbit for the CEMP star CS 22881–036. The velocity amplitude is very small. No velocity variation is found for three additional CEMP stars observed over roughly the same time interval. Searches for companions of two CEMP double-lined spectroscopic binaries and of the RR Lyrae star TY Gru are reviewed. A disparity between the period distribution of disk carbon-star binaries and that of their parent population of normal binaries can be attributed qualitatively to a decline in accreted mass with increasing binary separation. Finally, possible reasons for failure to find expected companions of CEMP stars are discussed.

This paper summarises our work on the role of magnetic fields in accretion disks presented in two papers elsewhere. In the first part (a summary of part of Kuncic & Bicknell 1999), we present a formal development of the equations governing the structure of an accretion disk containing magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The importance of the different terms in the energy and momentum equations is discussed, and a parametrisation of the unresolved processes is suggested that could be used to make further progress. We briefly explore whether an MHD accretion disk can transport a significant part of the gravitational power into a corona by buoyancy. In the second part, we present some exploratory calculations of the vertical structure of accretion disks, in which non-local dissipation of energy due to the buoyant transport of magnetic field energy is taken into account. It is argued that the efficiency of buoyant magnetic transport depends very strongly on the size of the coherent magnetic regions. If the size of the buoyant cells is not very close to the disk thickness, magnetic energy generated by dynamo action inside the disk will be dissipated locally, and will not be available to transport a significant part of the accretion luminosity into a corona.

We present preliminary results from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) Test Region and Parkes data. As part of the pilot project for the Southern Galactic Plane Survey, observations of a Test Region (325·5° ≤l ≤ 333·5°; −0·5° ≤ b ≤ 3·5°) were completed in December 1998. Single-dish observations of the full survey region (253° ≤ l ≤ 358 ° |b| ≤ 1°) with the Parkes Radio Telescope were completed in March 2000. We present a sample of SGPS H I data, with particular attention to the smallest-and largest-scale structures seen in absorption and emission, respectively. On the large scale, we detect many prominent H I shells. On the small scale, we note extremely compact, cold clouds seen in H I self-absorption. We explore how these two classes of objects probe opposite ends of the H I spatial power spectrum.

We present montage, a post-processing nucleosynthesis code that combines a traditional network for isotopes lighter than calcium with a rapid algorithm for calculating the s-process nucleosynthesis of the heavier isotopes. The separation of those parts of the network where only neutron-capture and beta-decay reactions are significant provides a substantial advantage in computational efficiency. We present the yields for a complete set of s-process isotopes for a 3-M⊙, Z = 0.02 stellar model, as a demonstration of the utility of the approach. Future work will include a large grid of models suitable for use in calculations of Galactic chemical evolution.

A novel spectrum-extraction method based on a 2-D Gaussian model is proposed in this paper. First, the flat images are employed to fit the model parameters in the spatial orientation and the calibration lamp images are used to fit the model parameters in the wavelength orientation. Then normalized 2-D models are obtained by combining the parameters of the two orientations. The flux-extraction algorithm is based on least-square theory and the 2-D model. Through experiments, the extracted spectra by our method have a stronger ability to reduce noise than the 1-D spectrum extraction method.

We investigate the effect of duplicity on stellar yields of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. Populations of single and binary stars are modelled and the yields calculated for the whole population. The effects of explosive nucleosynthesis in novae and supernovae are included but by artificially removing these effects from our populations we determine the influence of a binary companion on asymptotic giant branch yields of the CNO elements.

There has been much debate in recent decades as to what fraction of ionising photons from star-forming regions in the Galactic disk escape into the halo. The recent detection of the Magellanic Stream in optical line emission at the CTIO 4 m and the AAT 3·9 m telescopes may now provide the strongest evidence that at least some of the radiation escapes the disk completely. We present a simple model to demonstrate that, while the distance to the Magellanic Stream is uncertain, the observed emission measures (εm ≈ 0·5 – 1 cm−6 pc) are most plausibly explained by photoionisation due to hot, young stars. This model requires that the mean Lyman-limit opacity perpendicular to the disk is τLL ≈ 3, and the covering fraction of the resolved clouds is close to unity. Alternative sources (e.g. shock, halo, LMC or metagalactic radiation) contribute negligible ionising flux.

Due to the foreground extinction of the Milky Way, galaxies become increasingly faint as they approach the Galactic Equator creating a ‘zone of avoidance’ (ZOA) in the distribution of optically visible galaxies of about 25%. A ‘whole-sky’ map of galaxies is essential, however, for understanding the dynamics in our local Universe, in particular the peculiar velocity of the Local Group with respect to the Cosmic Microwave Background and velocity flow fields such as in the Great Attractor (GA) region. The current status of deep optical galaxy searches behind the Milky Way and their completeness as a function of foreground extinction will be reviewed. It has been shown that these surveys—which in the mean time cover the whole ZOA (Figure 2)—result in a considerable reduction of the ZOA from extinction levels of AB =1m.0 (Figure 1) to AB =3m.0 (Figure 3). In the remaining, optically opaque ZOA, systematic HI surveys are powerful in uncovering galaxies, as is demonstrated for the GA region with data from the full sensitivity Parkes Multibeam HI survey (300°≤l≤332°, ∣b∣≤5°.5, Figure 4).

During the second half of the nineteenth century Australian amateur and professional astronomers worked together in actively promoting astronomy among the general public. This collaboration was a product of the cordial amateur-professional relations that permeated pre-astrophysics Australian astronomy.

While monitoring Barnard’s star in Ophiuchus for flare activity in August 1969, we accidentally recorded two bright flares on an early type star, 66 Oph. Apart from Andrews’ unconfirmed observation of a flare on a B8 star and Eggen’s report of a flare on the β Cephei Variable, (BO) HD 199 140, no other record of an early type flare star is known to the authors.

Large-lecture introductory astronomy courses for undergraduate, non-science majors present numerous problems for faculty. As part of a systematic effort to improve the course learning environment, a series of small-group, collaborative learning activities were implemented in an otherwise conventional lecture astronomy survey course. These activities were used once each week during the regularly scheduled lecture period. After eight weeks, ten focus group interviews were conducted to qualitatively assess the impact and dynamics of these small group learning activities. Overall, the data strongly suggest that students enjoy participating in the in-class learning activities in learning teams of three to four students. These students firmly believe that they are learning more than they would from lectures alone. Inductive analysis of the transcripts revealed five major themes prevalent among the students' perspectives: (1) self-formed, cooperative group composition and formation should be more regulated by the instructor; (2) team members' assigned rolls should be less formally structured by the instructors; (3) cooperative groups helped in learning the course content; (4) time constraints on lectures and activities need to be more carefully aligned; and (5) gender issues can exist within the groups. These themes serve as a guide for instructors who are developing instructional interventions for large lecture courses.
