The Fleurs synthesis telescope, which provides 20 arcsec resolution at 1.4 GHz, was used to map the continuum emission in NGC 4945 and the Circinus galaxy. Both objects have prominent small-diameter radio nuclei, containing 50% to 75% of the total intensity, superimposed on extended emission associated with the outer regions of the galaxies. The scale of the nuclei, together with the large velocity widths of the associated spectral-line profiles, are not unlike those encountered in the central region of the Galaxy.

The growing number of black hole binary (BHB) mergers detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory have the potential to enable an unprecedented characterisation of the physical processes and astrophysical conditions that govern the formation of compact binaries. In this paper, we focus on investigating the dynamical formation of BHBs in dense star clusters through a state-of-the-art set of 58 direct N-body simulations with N $\leqslant200\,000$ particles which include stellar evolution, gravitational braking, orbital decay through gravitational radiation, and galactic tidal interactions. The simulations encompass a range of initial conditions representing typical young globular clusters, including the presence of primordial binaries. The systems are simulated for $\sim 12$ Gyr. The dataset yields 117 BHB gravitational wave (GW) events, with 97 binaries merging within their host cluster and 20 merging after having been ejected. Only 8% of all ejected BHBs merge within the age of the Universe. Systems in this merging subset tend to have smaller separations and larger eccentricities, as this combination of parameters results in greater emission of gravitational radiation. We confirm known trends from Monte Carlo simulations, such as the anti-correlation between the mass of the binary and age of the cluster. In addition, we highlight for the first time a difference at low values of the mass ratio distribution between in-cluster and ejected mergers. However, the results depend on assumptions on the strength of GW recoils, thus in-cluster mergers cannot be ruled out at a significant level of confidence. A more substantial catalogue of BHB mergers and a more extensive library of N-body simulations are needed to constrain the origin of the observed events.

Recent neutral hydrogen (HI) surveys have detected enough sources to make initial predictions of the extragalactic HI luminosity function. These surveys provide useful pointers for the Parkes Multibeam Survey, highlighting various advantages and disadvantages of different observing and analysis procedures. The newest surveys are also large enough to permit some statistical tests of their completeness. The detection rates clearly fall short of what would be expected based on a simple propagation of errors, suggesting the need for further development of detection software. I suggest several procedures for determining the effective sensitivity of HI surveys. Applied to two recent Arecibo surveys, these suggest that the HI luminosity function may be much steeper than its optical counterpart, and that the Parkes surveys may detect a large number of low-mass sources.

We present a progress report on the dynamical analysis of the IRAS sample of OH/IR stars. This sample is complete within a distance of 8 kpc. We distinguish two groups of OH/IR stars, one with high and the other with low expansion velocity of the circumstellar shell.

Using a quadratic programming method we fit a database of Galactic orbits to the observed distribution of radial velocities, longitudes and latitudes. The dynamical model yields a distribution function, based on two integrals of motion, for each group. Integration gives the density, the mean velocity and the velocity dispersions as function of R and z. The distribution functions for the two groups differ enough to suggest that they represent two different stellar populations.

We estimate the stellar lifetime for each group by comparing the velocity dispersions and z scale-heights at the solar radius with those found for local stellar populations. We conclude that the group with the low expansion velocity is likely to be part of the thick disc, while the high expansion velocity group has dynamical characteristics resembling an old disc population; this in contrast with the findings for differently selected samples of OH/IR stars (e.g., Baud et al. 1981a; 1981b), which were found to be less than 1 Gyr old.

My lecture this evening is dedicated to my late friend and fellow astronomer, Harley Wood, who died on 26 June 1984 at the age of 72. It is a fine thing that the ASA has decided to give the name of Harley Wood to an annual public lecture at the time of the society’s Annual General Meeting. For besides making a monumental contribution to the astrometry of the southern skies, Harley became a leader, a kind of organizer and father figure, among Australian astronomers. He played a leading part in the formation of this society and was its foundation President. He will also be specially remembered by a small group of us, about half a dozen, who met regularly in the charming old building of Sydney Observatory to plan the 1973 IAU General Assembly held in Sydney, the first time ever in Australia. Harley chaired not only the local organizing committee, but the ladies’ committee too. My wife still recalls the gentle, but firm way in which Harley once admonished her for addressing a remark across the table without going through the Chair. Harley was totally approachable and totally positive at all times: you could always count on his support for any sensible initiative. He had many friends and no enemies that I have heard of. And unlike so many of his profession, there was no hint of the egotist or the prima donna. I count it a privilege to have been his contemporary and colleague.

We present the results of 26 nights of CCD photometry of the nova V2540 Oph (2002) from 2003 to 2004. We find a period of 0.284781 ± 0.000006 d (6.8347 ± 0.0001 h) in the data. Since this period was present in the light curves taken in both years, with no apparent change in its value or amplitude, we interpret it as the orbital period of the nova binary system. The mass–period relation for cataclysmic variables yields a secondary mass of about 0.75 ± 0.04 M⊙. From maximum magnitude–rate of decline relation, we estimate a maximum absolute visual magnitude of MV = −6.2 ± 0.4 mag. This value leads to an uncorrected distance modulus of (m – M) = 14.7 ± 0.7. By using the interstellar reddening for the location of V2540 Oph, we find a rough estimate for the distance of 5.2 ± 0.8 kpc. We propose that V2540 Oph is either (1) a high-inclination cataclysmic variable showing a reflection effect of the secondary star, or having a spiral structure in the accretion disc, (2) a high-inclination intermediate polar system, or less likely (3) a polar.

The high spatial resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory allows us to study the environment of GPS/CSS sources to within an arcsec of the strong compact core. We present the discovery of X-ray jets in two GPS quasars, PKS1127–145 and B2 0738+313, indicating that X-ray emission associated with the relativistic plasma is present at large distances from the GPS nucleus. We also discuss first results from Chandra observations of our GPS/CSS sample. We find that six out of ten sources show intrinsic absorption at a level which may be sufficient to confine the GPS source.

We present the results obtained from unfiltered photometric CCD observations of the newly discovered cataclysmic variable SDSS J040714.78–064425.1 made during seven nights in 2003 November. We establish the dwarf nova nature of the object as it was in outburst during our observations. We also confirm the presence of deep eclipses with a period of 0.17017 ± 0.00003 d in the optical light curve of the star. In addition, we found periods of 0.166 ± 0.001 d and possibly also 5.3 ± 0.7 d in the data. The 0.17017 d periodicity is consistent within the errors with the proposed orbital period of 0.165 and 0.1700 d. Using the known relation between the orbital and superhump periods, we interpret the 0.166 and 5.3 d periods as the negative superhump and the nodal precession period respectively. SDSS J040714.78–064425.1 is then classified as a negative superhump system with one of the largest orbital periods.

As part of an extensive southern survey of interstellar NH3 with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope (with a beamwidth of 81 arcsec), the (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) transitions have been observed towards the galactic centre molecular cloud G1.6-0.025. The cloud has an overall size of 10 arcmin, and contains several concentrations with differing velocities. It has several features also observed in other galactic centre clouds, e.g. high optical depths and kinetic temperatures above 50 K.

Following the results of our previous low-frequency searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), directed towards the Galactic Centre and the Orion Molecular Cloud (Galactic Anticentre), we report a new large-scale survey towards the Vela region with the lowest upper limits thus far obtained with the MWA. Using the MWA in the frequency range 98–128 MHz over a 17-h period, a $400\,\textrm{deg}^{2}$ field centred on the Vela Supernova Remnant was observed with a frequency resolution of 10 kHz. Within this field, there are six known exoplanets. At the positions of these exoplanets, we searched for narrow-band signals consistent with radio transmissions from intelligent civilisations. No unknown signals were found with a 5 $\sigma$ detection threshold. In total, across this work plus our two previous surveys, we have now examined 75 known exoplanets at low frequencies. In addition to the known exoplanets, we have included in our analysis the calculation of the Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) upper limits towards over 10 million stellar sources in the Vela field with known distances from Gaia (assuming a 10-kHz transmission bandwidth). Using the methods of Wright, Kanodia, & Lubar (2018) to describe an eight-dimensional parameter space for SETI searches, our survey achieves the largest search fraction yet, two orders of magnitude higher than the previous highest (our MWA Galactic Anticentre survey), reaching a search fraction of $\ \sim2\,{\times}\,10^{-16}$ . We also compare our results to previous SETI programs in the context of the $\mbox{EIRP}_{\textrm{min}}$ —Transmitter Rate plane. Our results clearly continue to demonstrate that SETI has a long way to go. But, encouragingly, the MWA SETI surveys also demonstrate that large-scale SETI surveys, in particular for telescopes with a large field-of-view, can be performed commensally with observations designed primarily for astrophysical purposes.

Today, image denoising by thresholding of wavelet coefficients is a commonly used tool for 2D image enhancement. Since the data product of spectroscopic imaging surveys has two spatial dimensions and one spectral dimension, the techniques for denoising have to be adapted to this change in dimensionality. In this paper we will review the basic method of denoising data by thresholding wavelet coefficients and implement a 2D–1D wavelet decomposition to obtain an efficient way of denoising spectroscopic data cubes. We conduct different simulations to evaluate the usefulness of the algorithm as part of a source finding pipeline.

Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe is a concept for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration probe-class space mission that will achieve ground-breaking science in the fields of galaxy evolution, cosmology, Milky Way, and the Solar System. It is the follow-up space mission to Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), boosting its scientific return by obtaining deep 1–4 μm slit spectroscopy for ∼70% of all galaxies imaged by the ∼2 000 deg2 WFIRST High Latitude Survey at z > 0.5. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy will measure accurate and precise redshifts for ∼200 M galaxies out to z < 7, and deliver spectra that enable a wide range of diagnostic studies of the physical properties of galaxies over most of cosmic history. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe and WFIRST together will produce a 3D map of the Universe over 2 000 deg2, the definitive data sets for studying galaxy evolution, probing dark matter, dark energy and modifications of General Relativity, and quantifying the 3D structure and stellar content of the Milky Way. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe science spans four broad categories: (1) Revolutionising galaxy evolution studies by tracing the relation between galaxies and dark matter from galaxy groups to cosmic voids and filaments, from the epoch of reionisation through the peak era of galaxy assembly; (2) Opening a new window into the dark Universe by weighing the dark matter filaments using 3D weak lensing with spectroscopic redshifts, and obtaining definitive measurements of dark energy and modification of General Relativity using galaxy clustering; (3) Probing the Milky Way’s dust-enshrouded regions, reaching the far side of our Galaxy; and (4) Exploring the formation history of the outer Solar System by characterising Kuiper Belt Objects. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe is a 1.5 m telescope with a field of view of 0.4 deg2, and uses digital micro-mirror devices as slit selectors. It has a spectroscopic resolution of R = 1 000, and a wavelength range of 1–4 μm. The lack of slit spectroscopy from space over a wide field of view is the obvious gap in current and planned future space missions; Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy fills this big gap with an unprecedented spectroscopic capability based on digital micro-mirror devices (with an estimated spectroscopic multiplex factor greater than 5 000). Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy is designed to fit within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration probe-class space mission cost envelope; it has a single instrument, a telescope aperture that allows for a lighter launch vehicle, and mature technology (we have identified a path for digital micro-mirror devices to reach Technology Readiness Level 6 within 2 yr). Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe will lead to transformative science over the entire range of astrophysics: from galaxy evolution to the dark Universe, from Solar System objects to the dusty regions of the Milky Way.

The HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey is a 21 cm blind search with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m radiotelescope, looking for galaxies hidden behind the southern Milky Way. The first, shallow (15 mJy rms) phase of the survey has uncovered 107 galaxies, two-thirds of which were previously unknown. The addition of these galaxies to existing extragalactic catalogues allows the connectivity of a very long, thin filament across the Zone of Avoidance within 3500 km s−1 to become evident. No local, hidden, very massive objects were uncovered. With similar results in the north (the Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxies Survey) our census of the most dynamically important HI-rich nearby galaxies is now complete, at least for those objects whose HI profiles are not totally buried in the Galactic HI signal. Tests are being devised to better quantify this remaining ZOA for blind HI searches. The full survey is ongoing, and is expected to produce a catalogue of thousands of objects when it is finished.

Since the start of high-resolution observations with the radioheliograph at the Culgoora Solar Observatory it has been noted that some bursts which occur from separate active regions could be physically correlated. It was suggested that the time delay between the correlated bursts is of the order of seconds, and that fast electrons provide the trigger. Wild found that shortly before a large flare weak bursts, stronelv polarized in the same sense, appeared simultaneously in different sources after a quiet period and he discussed the phenomenon in the light of flare mechanisms.

Reverse drift pairs were first described by Roberts (1958) and later by Ellis (1969) and de la Nòe and Moller-Pedersen (1971). Figure 1 shows a 10-min section of the spectrograph record and the corresponding section of the polarimeter record. The figure contains several reverse drift pairs and illustrates the main features of RDPs, namely: (1) frequency drift rate of about 4 MHz s-1 (i.e. a factor of ~50 faster than Type lis and a factor of ~2 slower than type Ills); (2) drift to higher frequencies (i.e. opposite to that of Type II and III bursts, hence the name ‘reverse’); and (3) an apparent ‘echo’ of the burst some 1 to 2 s later to form a pair. On 1979 February 17/18 a noise storm consisting of Type 1 bursts, Type III bursts and an underlying continuum was observed with the Culgoora spectropolarimeter, spectrograph, and radioheliograph. During this noise storm, the spectrograph record showed several hundred RDP bursts, and about fifty FDPs. Here we report new results on the polarization-of drift pair bursts, present further data on RDP positional and frequency characteristics, and then comment on existing theories concerning RDPs.

We present a catalogue of 668 major metre-wavelength radio events. The data was collected from dynamic spectra (taken at Dapto, N.S.W. until 1966 and at Culgoora, N.S.W. thereafter) by means of a radio spectrograph, which records the intensity of radio emission as a function of both frequency and time. A description of the major types of metre-wavelength phenomena can be found in Wild et al. (1963), Kundu (1965), Wild and Smerd (1972) and Kruger (1979), and details of the radio spectrograph in Sheridan (1963, 1967) and Labrum (1972).

A number of solar filaments/prominences demonstrate failed eruptions, when a filament at first suddenly starts to ascend and then decelerates and stops at some greater height in the corona. The mechanism of the termination of eruptions is not clear yet. One of the confining forces able to stop the eruption is the gravity force. Using a simple model of a partial current-carrying torus loop anchored to the photosphere and photospheric magnetic field measurements as the boundary condition for the potential magnetic field extrapolation into the corona, we estimated masses of 15 eruptive filaments. The values of the filament mass show rather wide distribution in the range of $4\times10^{15}$ – $270\times10^{16}$ g. Masses of the most of filaments, laying in the middle of the range, are in accordance with estimations made earlier on the basis of spectroscopic and white-light observations.

We have observed the G23 field of the Galaxy AndMass Assembly (GAMA) survey using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) in its commissioning phase to validate the performance of the telescope and to characterise the detected galaxy populations. This observation covers ~48 deg2 with synthesised beam of 32.7 arcsec by 17.8 arcsec at 936MHz, and ~39 deg2 with synthesised beam of 15.8 arcsec by 12.0 arcsec at 1320MHz. At both frequencies, the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) noise is ~0.1 mJy/beam. We combine these radio observations with the GAMA galaxy data, which includes spectroscopy of galaxies that are i-band selected with a magnitude limit of 19.2. Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) infrared (IR) photometry is used to determine which galaxies host an active galactic nucleus (AGN). In properties including source counts, mass distributions, and IR versus radio luminosity relation, the ASKAP-detected radio sources behave as expected. Radio galaxies have higher stellar mass and luminosity in IR, optical, and UV than other galaxies. We apply optical and IR AGN diagnostics and find that they disagree for ~30% of the galaxies in our sample. We suggest possible causes for the disagreement. Some cases can be explained by optical extinction of the AGN, but for more than half of the cases we do not find a clear explanation. Radio sources aremore likely (~6%) to have an AGN than radio quiet galaxies (~1%), but the majority of AGN are not detected in radio at this sensitivity.

The distribution of mass in a spiral galaxy is usually inferred from its rotation curve. The curve is most conveniently measured using part of its extreme population I such as HI or HII. This has a low velocity dispersion so that the observed tangential motion is in the absence of non-circular motions (van der Kruit and Allen 1978; Bosma 1981a, b) close to the circular velocity required to balance the gravitational force. The main difficulty is that for a detailed interpretation of the rotation curve one has to make assumptions on some general properties of the mass distribution, even though it is true that one can estimate the total mass within the last measured point to an accuracy of about a factor two. That of axial symmetry is only the simplest of assumptions. On the basis of the light distribution with a usually prominent disk component one often assumes that the mass distribution is also basically highly flattened.

In late 1998 the International Gemini Project Office identified a need for a low cost, near-infrared spectrograph to be commissioned on the Gemini South telescope on the shortest possible timescale. In response, the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the Australian National University proposed to design, construct, and commission a near-infrared, integral-field spectrograph on Gemini. The science drivers and novel design of the Near-infrared Integral-Field Spectrograph (NIFS) are described in this paper. NIFS will achieve significant economies in cost and schedule in several ways:

• By addressing targeted science with high efficiency. NIFS will primarily target velocity measurements in galaxies to study the demographics of black holes in galactic nuclei and the evolution of structural properties in high redshift galaxies. However, NIFS will also be applied to a wide range of general astronomical topics, but these will not dictate the instrument design.

• By adopting a largely fixed-format design. A 3·2″ × 3·2″ ‘stair-case’ integral field unit (IFU) will feed a near-infrared spectrograph with four fixed-angle gratings mounted on a single grating wheel. A single, fixed-format camera will form the spectral image on a 2048 × 2048 Rockwell HgCdTe HAWAII-2 array. Two-pixel spectral resolving powers of ∼5400 will be achieved with complete wavelength coverage in each of the J, H, and K photometric bands through 32 optimally sampled 0·1″ wide slitlets. The velocity resolution of ∼55 km s−1 will be sufficient to achieve the targeted science objectives, and will allow software rejection of OH airglow lines.

• By packaging the NIFS instrument within a duplicate of the Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) cryostat. The NIRI cryostat, On-Instrument Wavefront Sensor (OIWFS), detector focusing mechanism, control system, and EPICS software will all be duplicated with only minimal change. Construction of the duplicate NIRI cryostat, OIWFS, and control system will be done by the University of Hawaii.
