Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has slowly developed over the past quarter of a century to a position now where a number of sources are known to produce gamma-rays in the energy range 1011eV to 1018eV. The observations are difficult, with exceptional signal to noise problems, but improved techniques are now allowing observers to proceed with confidence. In this paper the physical bases of the observations are emphasised to show the important issues in the field and the present state of the observations is indicated.

A precedent to the recently-discovered pulsed radio sources or ‘pulsars’ exists in our own solar system. Jupiter could be thought of as a very slow ‘pulsar’ having a period of about 10 h or 35 000 s. Like pulsars, this emission period is known to a high order of accuracy (about 1 in 106). One difference is that Jupiter emission is received over an appreciable part of this period (1/4 to 1/2 or more) compared with about 1/30 of a typical pulsar period (about 40 ms in 1.3 s). Both pulsar and Jupiter bursts have a microstructure of the order of milliseconds, suggesting similar sizes of instantaneous emission regions. In both, the intensity observed varies from period to period. Emissions from both have relatively strong circular-polarization components at times.

A 30 MHz radio telescope has recently been completed at Fleurs, N.S.W. There has been a need for a high resolution sky survey to be carried out in the Southern Hemisphere at a frequency intermediate between 19.7 MHz (Shain et al.) and 85.7 MHz (Mills et al). One particular reason lies in the fact that some HII regions which are seen in absorption against the galactic background at 19.7 MHz and in emission at 85.7 MHz may match the background temperature at 30 MHz. If the temperature of such a region has been found by other means, the 30 MHz temperature of the portion of the Galaxy beyond it is determined irrespective of conditions nearer the observer, since the two temperatures must be equal.

We have compared the spectra of six Type Ia supernovae, at ages between 4 and 404 days after maximum light, to see whether all show similar evolutionary behaviour. We find that the spectral lines between 6800 Å and 8000 Å follow a smooth evolutionary trend, but that lines redward of 8000 Å show significant differences. SN 1987I and SN 19880 show extra emission over a broader wavelength region, possibly due to OI 8446 Å emission which would indicate higher envelope densities for these objects. Our results are consistent with the trend of expansion velocity with parent galaxy type reported by Branch and van den Bergh (1993). Variations within the class of Ia SNe may affect their use as standard candles.

The reason why some early-type galaxies contain powerful radio sources is not yet well understood, but it is often suggested that an external factor such as interaction with a neighbouring galaxy may be involved in triggering a radio source (Gisler 1976, Dressel 1981, Hummel 1981b). Radio emission may be enhanced in galaxies which have a close companion for several reasons, such as a gravitational perturbation or the possibility of gas accreted from the companion fuelling a central source. The latter effect might be expected to be more pronounced in elliptical galaxies, which are generally gas-poor (Faber and Gallagher 1976).

Molecular hydrogen in spiral galaxies is distributed in clumps, i.e., molecular clouds, which have mass between 103M⊙ and 106M⊙ and a mass spectrum of n(m) ∝ m−1.6. Molecular clouds with masses greater than 105M⊙, are called giant molecular clouds (GMCs). It is generally accepted that GMCs are formed by the coalescence of molecular clouds through their collision. This process is studied by both numerical simulation and numerical integration. The observation with high resolution identified a great number of CO emission cores in galaxies. Based on this result, the aggregation or clustering formation of GMCs is numerically simulated. In the process of either coalescence or clustering, spiral perturbation plays an important role.

The complex consisting of the bright HII region M17 (G15.0-0.7) and its associated molecular cloud is well known as a region of active star formation which contains an abundance of many different molecules (see e.g. Lada 1976). For H2CO, observations of the 110 – 111 transition at 4.8 GHz towards the HII region show an intense narrow absorption feature with a radial velocity near + 24 km s−1 superimposed on weak absorption which extends to below +10 km s−1 (Whiteoak and Gardner 1970). According to Whiteoak and Gardner (1974) the latter consists of several features centred at the velocities of +4.7, + 10.4, + 17.9 and +20.3 km s−1. Lada and Chaisson (1975) mapped the absorption around M17 with a 6′ .5 arc beam and concluded that the broad component was associated with the obscuring dust cloud near the HII region while the narrow feature occurred in a foreground cloud. In this paper we present observations made with higher angular resolution and higher sensitivity; they define better the H2CO distribution and its relationship with the extended CO cloud near M17 (Elmegreen et al. 1979).

High-resolution observations indicate that very strong, small scale magnetic fields in the solar photosphere are concentrated into ropes which emerge through it. The scale of these ropes is only a few hundred kilometres across (Stenflo 1976) and their strength is estimated to vary between 1,000 and 2,000 G (Harvey 1977). These features are closely related to photospheric granular convection. The flux is observed as X-ray bright spots and sheet-like crinkles in the dark intergranular lanes, and is buffeted and shifted about by the granules (Dunn and Zirker 1973). Further, the crinkles can be resolved into separate features which outline small micropores as though a flux sheet at the end of a convection cell has separated into several isolated tubes (Galloway and Weiss 1981).

There is growing evidence for the notion that large grains are an important constituent of the interstellar medium. It has been found to be necessary to invoke the presence of large grains (of radius a > 1.0 μm) in a number of circumstellar shells, including those around Eta Carinae, and some late type giants and supergiants. Most recently, as a result of IRAS observations, the same idea has been used in the interpretation of the extensive optically thin disks found around some young early type stars. It is important to establish size constraints on these grains, so as to determine better the probable mix of interstellar grains. Previous work on AG Carinae suggested merely that the grains in the circumstellar shell need to be larger than 1 μm, but gave no information regarding the maximum size which would be acceptable. In this paper, we explore the question of the characteristic size of the dust grains in the AG Carinae shell, by fitting the spatially integrated model energy distribution to observations over the wavelength range 360 nm–100 μm, and conclude that silicate grains of radius ~ 1.0 μm give a satisfactory fit to the spectrum and angular distribution, but that grains appreciably larger or smaller than this radius are unsatisfactory.

Although cosmic rays detected in interplanetary space have often been correlated with visible flares at the Sun, little is known about the transport of these particles through the corona. Lin demonstrated a good correlation between ≳20 keV electron events detected by spacecraft near the Earth and type III radio bursts at the Sun. In a detailed investigation of many of these electron events from one particular active region source, Lin proposed that the injection of electrons was characterized by a source region in the corona which extended over ~70° in longitude, such that in this region the electrons had direct access to an ‘open cone’ of propagation in interplanetary space. When the spacecraft was situated outside this open cone (by up to 15°), impulsive electron events were still recorded, but these were now modified by diffusion through the corona of the electrons from the 70° source region.

In the first decade or so of 21 cm studies the galactic spiral structure problem was treated in a very straightforward manner. A simple velocity-distance transformation was used to derive the locations of the spiral arms from the radial velocities of the main features on the 21 cm profiles. Some well-known diagrams were obtained in this way.

It has been suggested, for example by Wilson and Spiegel, that the results from the study of convection in incompressible fluids may provide a basis for the study of the solar convection zone. In fact Wilson’s models contain temperature fluctuation maxima, a feature exhibited by the results obtained from the convection problem for large values of the Rayleigh number.

The LYMAN project has been the subject of industrial Phase A studies in both Australia, and within ESA. These studies have demonstrated an extremely useful international collaboration, as well as a very successful collaboration between University and Industry. Working together, we have identified all critical problems of feasibility, and have developed at least one, usually more than one, method of overcoming these while remaining within the cost and complexity envelope of the overall mission.

The LYMAN mission will be the subject of a competitive selection process within ESA at the end of November 1988. One of five projects will be selected to go forward into later phases. However, the Australian LSWG are confident that, with the enormous support that the LYMAN project commands on both sides of the Atlantic, with the tremendous scientific merit of the proposed mission, and with the demonstration of feasibility of the mission in two separate Phase A studies, that LYMAN will be the successful candidate.

A proposal for the siting of additional 14 metre antennas for the Fleurs Synthesis Telescope (FST) was previously presented by Christiansen (1976). Since that time, difficulties have arisen which preclude the use of two of the locations. In addition, solutions to the problems of data reduction for irregular antenna spacings have been found (Frater and Skellern, 1978; Frater, 1978; Frater, 1979). It has now been possible to choose the locations of the final antennas to optimise the performance of the array within broader geographic constraints — subject now to the availability of sites on ‘friendly’ land.

Since the Molonglo cross-type radio telescope was completed in 1967 July, a considerable proportion of the observing time has been taken with calibrating the pointing of the north-south arm. In a current programme the aim is to obtain accurate positions for sources contained in the flux density catalogue recently prepared by Wyllie. This will provide a uniform set of several hundred positions and flux density calibrators covering the +20° to −90° declination range observable at the Molonglo Observatory.

Young supernova remnants are poorly understood and few are known. Further examples may be present, but unrecognised, within existing catalogues of radio sources. G274.68–2.84 was recently suggested as one such candidate but our new radio map from the Australia Telescope indicates that it is not a supernova remnant. Rather, it appears to be extragalactic with a strong, variable, flat-spectrum nucleus, and a bright X-ray counterpart.

The possibility is considered that core emission in pulsars results from secondary e± pairs generated through linear acceleration emission (LAE), rather than the conventional curvature emission (CE). It is found that this is possible in principle, but only under conditions that appear not to be satisfied in practice.

The reappearance of radio emission from SN 1987A is discussed. We propose a model involving synchrotron radiation from electrons which are accelerated when the expanding supernova shock wave runs into a density jump in the circumstellar material, and which then expand adiabatically.

The Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) will beAustralia’s first Gemini instrument. NIFS is a near-infrared, imaging spectrograph that will be used with the ALTAIR facility adaptive optics system on Gemini North to perform near-diffraction-limited imaging spectroscopy over a 3·0″ × 3·0″ field of view with 0·1″ wide slitlets and a spectral resolving power of ˜5300. NIFS will operate in the wavelength range from 0·94–2·50 µm where ALTAIR delivers its greatest gains. Its primary purpose is to study moderate-surface-brightness structures around discrete objects that are revealed at high spatial resolution by ALTAIR. NIFS will address a wide range of science from studies of Galactic star formation and the Galactic centre to the nature of disk galaxies at z ˜ 1. Studies of the demographics of massive black holes in galactic nuclei and studies of the excitation conditions in the inner narrow-line regions of Seyfert galaxies have been identified as two core NIFS programs. These and other science drivers for NIFS are discussed.
