In July 1967 and June 1968 observations of the central intensity variation in several chromospheric lines were obtained by P. R. Wilson and myself at Sacramento Peak Observatory, New Mexico using the 16-inch coronagraph coupled with the high-dispersion Littrow Spectrograph. Observations in the MgB lines (λ5184, 5173, 5167 Å) were obtained the first summer whilst the NaD lines (λ5889, 5896 Å) were studied in the second. Table I shows the mean heights in the solar atmosphere at which it is thought these lines are formed.

A review is given of recent developments in the interpretation of the structure and heating of the solar corona, and of solar flares. An electric circuit model for a flaring magnetic loop is introduced, and used to discuss the closure of the current pattern. It is argued that cross-field current flow cannot be set up after a flux tube has emerged above the photosphere. The energy dissipated in a flare is attributed to a change in the inductance of the flaring loop, with the current remaining approximately constant. Emphasis is placed on the value of the resistance of the flaring loop, and on the associated inductive timescale.

The radial density gradient (Gr) of Galactic cosmic rays in the ecliptic plane points outward from the Sun. This indicates an increasing density of cosmic ray particles beyond the Earth’s orbit. Due to this gradient and the direction of the Sun’s interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) above and below the IMF wavy neutral sheet, there exists an anisotropic flow of cosmic ray particles approximately perpendicular to the ecliptic plane (i.e. in the direction parallel to BIMF × Gr). This effect is called the north–south anisotropy (ξNS) and manifests as a diurnal variation in sidereal time in the particle intensity recorded by a cosmic ray detector. By analysing the yearly averaged sidereal diurnal variation recorded by five neutron monitors and six muon telescopes from 1957 to 1990, we have deduced probable values of the average rigidity spectrum and magnitude of ξNS. Furthermore, we have used determined yearly amplitudes of ξNS to infer the magnitude of Gr for particles with rigidities in excess of 10 GV.

We discuss the importance of digitised sky-limited Schmidt B- and R-band, and Hα images of extended translucent (AB ≃ 1–5 mag) and dark (AB > 5 mag) clouds. In translucent clouds (e.g. high-latitude cirrus) photons can penetrate through the whole cloud and control the physical and chemical processes. Comparison of the B images with far-infrared/submillimetre CO, CI, and CII emission provides important information on the non-homogeneous cloud structure, carbon chemistry and energy balance. In dark clouds the interior is completely shielded from the interstellar radiation field. L1204 is a dark cloud with at its edge the well-known HII rim S140. The R-band image shows S140 as well as the diffuse extended HII region around the exciting B-type star. However, the sensitivity for Hα in the R-band is rather low and there is contamination with diffusely scattered red light from dust. Deep Hα and R-band imaging of an ∼20′×20′ field has recently been done with the 1 m Hoher List telescope of Bonn University. A wealth of small-scale structures can been seen on continuum-subtracted images which provide new insight on the geometry of this cloud.

A problem for studies of large scale structures in nearby space (cz < 10,000 km s-1) is the presence of the Zone of Avoidance which is so large and wide on the sky that potentially important clusters and voids remain undetected. A prime example was the Ophiuchus cluster discovered by Wakamatsu and Malkan (1981) as a heavily obscured cD cluster close to the Galactic centre region (l = 0·5°, b = +9·5°). It is the second brightest X-ray cluster after Perseus. A hidden galaxy survey was performed by visually searching ESO/SERC Sky Survey (R and J) copy films of the region centred at l = 355°, b = +10° finding more than 4000 galaxies in six fields. Several irregular clusters adjacent to Ophiuchus were found forming a supercluster which may be connected to the Hercules supercluster by a wall structure parallel to the local supergalactic plane (Wakamatsu et al. 1994). In front of this supercluster, an 'Ophiuchus Void' is suggested (cz = 4,500 km s-1). The Ophiuchus supercluster at cz = 8,500 km s-1 is similar to the Hercules supercluster (cz = 11,000 km s-1), and extends north toward the latter supercluster.

The diatomic free radical methylidyne (CH) is an important tracer of the interstellar medium, and the study of it was critical to our earliest understanding of star formation. Although it is detectable across the electromagnetic spectrum, observations at radio frequencies allow for a study of the kinematics of the diffuse and dense gas in regions of new star formation. There is only two published (single-dish) detections of the low-frequency hyperfine transitions between 700 and 725 MHz, despite the precise frequencies being known. These low-frequency transitions are of particular interest as they are shown in laboratory experiments to be more sensitive to magnetic fields than their high-frequency counterparts (with more pronounced Zeeman splitting). In this work, we take advantage of the radio quiet environment and increased resolution of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) over previous searches to make a pilot interferometric search for CH at 724.7883 MHz (the strongest of the hyperfine transitions) in RCW 38. We found the band is clean of radio frequency interference, but we did not detect the signal from this transition to a five-sigma sensitivity limit of 0.09 Jy, which corresponds to a total column density upper limit of 1.9 $\times 10^{18}$ cm–2 for emission and 1.3 $\times 10^{14}$ cm–2 for absorption with an optical depth limit of 0.95. Achieved within 5 h of integration, this column density sensitivity should have been adequate to detect the emission or absorption in RCW 38, if it had similar properties to the only previous reported detections in W51.

Using a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation of a galaxy of similar mass to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we examine the predicted characteristics of its lowest metallicity populations. In particular, we emphasise the spatial distributions of first (Pop III) and second (polluted by only immediate Pop III ancestors) generation stars. We find that primordial composition stars form not only in the central galaxy’s progenitor, but also in locally collapsed subhaloes during the early phases of galaxy formation. The lowest metallicity stars in these subhaloes end up in a relatively extended distribution around the host, with these accreted stars possessing present-day galactocentric distances as great as ~40 kpc. By contrast, the earliest stars formed within the central galaxy remain in the inner region, where the vast majority of star formation occurs, for the entirety of the simulation. Consequently, the fraction of stars that are from the earliest generation increases strongly with radius.

We present metallicity-dependent transformation equations between UBV and SDSS ugr colours for red giants with synthetic data. The ranges of the colours used for the transformations are 0.400 ≤ (B − V)0 ≤ 1.460, −0.085 ≤ (U − B)0 ≤ 1.868, 0.291 ≤ (g − r)0 ≤ 1.326, and 1.030 ≤ (u − g)0 ≤ 3.316 mag, and cover almost all the observational colours of red giants. We applied the transformation equations to six clusters with different metallicities and compared the resulting (u − g)0 colours with those estimated by the calibration of the fiducial sequences of the clusters. The mean and standard deviation of the residuals for all clusters are <Δ(u − g)0> = −0.01 and σ(u − g)0 = 0.07 mag, respectively. We showed that interstellar reddening plays an important role on the derived colours. The transformations can be applied to clusters as well as to field stars. They can be used to extend the colour range of the red giants in the clusters which are restricted due to the saturation of the SDSS data.

The next generation 2-μm sky survey should target nascent galaxies in the epoch of reionization for spectroscopic followup on large telescopes. A 2.5-m telescope at a site on the Antarctic plateau has advantages for this purpose and for southern hemisphere infrared surveys in general.

Pulsars are rapidly spinning highly magnetised neutron stars. Their spin period is observed to decrease with time. An early analytical model for this process was the vacuum retarded dipole (VRD) by Deutsch (1955, AnAp, 18). This model assumes an idealised star and it finds that the rotational energy is radiated away by the electromagnetic fields. This model has been superseded by more realistic numerical simulations that account for the non-vacuum like surroundings of the neutron star. However, the VRD still provides a reasonable approximation and is a useful limiting case that can provide some qualitative understanding. We provide detailed derivations of the spin down and related electromagnetic field equations of the VRD solution. We also correct typographical errors in the general field equations and boundary conditions used by Deutsch (1955, AnAp, 18).

We have adapted the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Science Pipelines to process data from the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) prototype. In this paper, we describe how we used the LSST Science Pipelines to conduct forced photometry measurements on nightly GOTO data. By comparing the photometry measurements of sources taken on multiple nights, we find that the precision of our photometry is typically better than 20 mmag for sources brighter than 16 mag. We also compare our photometry measurements against colour-corrected Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System photometry and find that the two agree to within 10 mmag (1 $\sigma$ ) for bright (i.e., $\sim 14{\rm th} \mathrm{mag}$ ) sources to 200 mmag for faint (i.e., $\sim 18{\rm th} \mathrm{mag}$ ) sources. Additionally, we compare our results to those obtained by GOTO’s own in-house pipeline, gotophoto, and obtain similar results. Based on repeatability measurements, we measure a $5\sigma$ L-band survey depth of between 19 and 20 magnitudes, depending on observing conditions. We assess, using repeated observations of non-varying standard Sloan Digital Sky Survey stars, the accuracy of our uncertainties, which we find are typically overestimated by roughly a factor of two for bright sources (i.e., $< 15{\rm th} \mathrm{mag}$ ), but slightly underestimated (by roughly a factor of 1.25) for fainter sources ( $> 17{\rm th} \mathrm{mag}$ ). Finally, we present lightcurves for a selection of variable sources and compare them to those obtained with the Zwicky Transient Factory and GAIA. Despite the LSST Software Pipelines still undergoing active development, our results show that they are already delivering robust forced photometry measurements from GOTO data.

Recent studies of Galactic evolution revealed that the dynamics of the stellar component might be one of the key factors when considering galactic habitability. We run an N-body simulation model of the Milky Way, which we evolve for 10 Gyr, to study the secular evolution of stellar orbits and the resulting galactic habitability related properties, i.e., the density of the stellar component and close stellar encounters. The results indicate that radial migrations are not negligible, even in a simple axisymmetric model with mild levels of dynamical heating, and that the net outward diffusion of the stellar component can populate galactic outskirts with habitable systems. Habitable environment is also likely even at sub-Solar galactocentric radii, because the rate of close encounters should not significantly degrade habitability. Stars that evolve from non-circular to stable nearly circular orbits typically migrate outwards, settling down in a broad Solar neighbourhood. The region between $R \approx 3$ kpc and $R \approx 12$ kpc represents the zone of radial mixing, which can blur the boundaries of the Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ), as it has been conventionally understood. The present-day stable population of the stars in the Solar neighbourhood originates from this radial mixing zone, with most of the stars coming from the inner regions. The Solar system can be considered as a typical Milky Way habitable system because it migrated outwards from the metal-rich inner regions of the Disk and has a circular orbit in the present epoch. We conclude that the boundaries of the GHZ cannot be sharply confined for a given epoch because of the mixing caused by the stellar migrations and secular evolution of stellar orbits.

We present results regarding the longitudinal migrations of cool stellar spots that exhibit remarkable oscillations and explore their possible causes. We conducted analyses using high-quality data from nine target systems of various spectral types, spanning from F to M, which were observed by the Kepler Satellite. The systems in which the behaviour of the spots was examined are as follows: KIC 4357272, KIC 6025466, KIC 6058875, KIC 6962018, KIC 7798259, KIC 9210828, KIC 11706658, KIC 12599700, and KIC 8669092. Basic stellar parameters were calculated from light curve analysis using the PHOEBE V.0.32 software, and light curves were modelled to obtain sinusoidal variations occurring out-of-eclipses phases, induced by rotational modulation. Subsequently, we calculated the minimum times of the obtained sinusoidal variations using the Fourier transform. The distributions of ${\theta}_{\min}$ corresponding to these minimum times over time were computed using linear fits to determine the longitudinal migrations of the spotted areas. We then compared the longitudinal migration periods with the stellar parameters found in the literature. In addition, we also found a secondary variation in the spot migrations apart from the linear models. Our results revealed that the longitudinal migration periods vary in relation to the $B-V$ colour index of the stars.

Rest-frame mid- to far-infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study how galaxies formed and evolved, because a major part of their evolution occurs in heavily dust enshrouded environments, especially at the so-called Cosmic Noon ( $1< z < 3$ ). Using the calibrations of IR lines and features, recently updated with Herschel and Spitzer spectroscopy, we predict their expected fluxes with the aim to measure the Star Formation (SF) and the Black Hole Accretion (BHA) rates in intermediate to high redshift galaxies. On the one hand, the recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers new mid-IR spectroscopic capabilities that will enable for the first time a detailed investigation of both the SF and the BHA obscured processes as a function of cosmic time. We make an assessment of the spectral lines and features that can be detected by JWST-MIRI in galaxies and active galactic nuclei up to redshift $z \sim 3$ . The fine structure lines of [MgIV]4.49 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and [ArVI]4.53 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ can be used as BHA rate tracers for the $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ range, and we propose the [NeVI]7.65 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line as the best tracer for $z \lesssim 1.5$ . The [ArII]6.98 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and [ArIII]8.99 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ lines can be used to measure the SF rate at $z \lesssim 3$ and $z \lesssim 2$ , respectively, while the stronger [NeII]12.8 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line exits the JWST-MIRI spectral range above $z \gtrsim 1.2$ . At higher redshifts, the PAH features at 6.2 and 7.7 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ can be observed at $z \lesssim 3$ and $z \lesssim 2.7$ , respectively. On the other hand, rest-frame far-IR spectroscopic observations of high redshift galaxies ( $z \gtrsim 3$ ) have been collected with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in the last few years. The observability of far-IR lines from ALMA depends on the observed frequency, due to the significant decrease of the atmospheric transmission at the highest frequencies ( $\gtrsim420\,\rm{Hz}$ ). The [CII]158 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line is a reliable tracer of the SF rate and can in most cases ( $0.9 \lesssim z \lesssim 2$ and $2 \lesssim z \lesssim 9$ ) be observed. Additionally, we propose the use of the combination of [OIII]88 $\,\unicode{x03BC}$ m and [OI]145 $\,\unicode{x03BC}$ m lines as an alternative SF rate tracer, that can be detected above $z \gtrsim 3$ . Overall, we emphasize the importance of using multi-feature analysis to measure both BHA and SFR, since individual tracers can be strongly dependent on the local ISM conditions and vary from source to source. However, we conclude that the peak of the obscured SF and BHA activities at Cosmic Noon falls outside the wavelength coverage of facilities currently operating or under development. A new IR space telescope covering the full IR spectral range from about 10 to $300\,\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and actively cooled to achieve high sensitivity, will be needed.

In an IAU Symposium report, Spiegel has made mention of the basic reasons for the astrophysical interest in the problem of non-linear convection of a horizontal fluid layer heated from below. Unfortunately the two important parameters of this problem—the Prandtl number P and the Rayleigh number R take on ‘extreme’ values in the astrophysical situation and this presents immediate difficulties as far as the numerical solution of the basic equations go.

The initial flight of the University of Tasmania balloon-borne X-ray telescope was made from Parkes on Dec. 2, 1976. During the flight, enhanced X-ray emission was observed from the directions of 3U0900-40 (Vela XR-1), GX301-2 and the Galactic Centre. In this paper we report on the performance of the payload during the 11 hour flight and describe the preliminary results thus far obtained.

Radio position measurements with an error of <2” arc rms allow reliable optical identifications of compact radio sources to be made solely on the basis of radio-optical position coincidence. In this way neutral or red stellar objects, faint compact galaxies and faint QSOs can be reliably identified. Such identifications are of particular interest because they are rich in BL Lac objects, high-redshift QSOs, QSOs with unusual optical emission or absorption spectra and galaxies with active nuclei (see Jauncey et al. 1978).

The Japanese National Large Telescope is an 8-metre class optical-infrared reflector with a monolithic thin meniscus mirror, to be constructed at the Mauna Kea summit, Hawaii. The JNLT will be characterised by high quality performance in the optical and infrared regions, achieved by adopting new technologies such as active mirror support, fast optics and a thermally controlled dome. In particular, high infrared qualities are regarded as the most important characteristics among various design goals.

The JNLT project is now close to the final study phase before construction. This paper reviews the scientific motivations and the special technical features of the JNLT. Finally, the promotion of international collaboration around the JNLT is emphasised.

The close association between flare events having metric radio type II and type IV bursts and the subsequent occurrence of sudden commencement geomagnetic storms is well known. In such cases it has been amply demonstrated (e.g. Malitson et al. 1973; Cane et al. 1982) that the sudden commencement (SC) is caused by the same magnetohydrodynamic shock which originates near the Sun and which produces the type II burst. Recently, a study of geomagnetic storms thought to be associated with the disappearance of filaments from quiet regions of the Sun (Joselyn and McIntosh 1981) showed that several of these storms began with marked sudden commencements.

Commissioning of the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) is now well along and regular scheduled observing will begin at the end of June. This paper is an account of the main features of the telescope as they will appear to observers, and is intended in particular as a guide to people who are formulating programmes. First however some remarks on the telescope design.
