We prove that the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional parabolic equations , with initial data in Hs(R), cannot be solved by an iterative scheme based on the Duhamel formula for s < −1 if (k, d) = (2, 0) and s < sc(k, d) = ½ − (2 − d)/(k − 1) otherwise. This exactly completes the positive results on the Cauchy problem in Hs(R) for these equations and shows the particularity of the case (k, d) = (2, 0), for which we prove that the critical space Hsc(R) = H−3/2(R), by standard scaling arguments, cannot be reached. Our results also hold in the periodic setting.

This paper deals with local and global existence for the solutions of the heat equation in bounded domains with nonlinear boundary damping and source terms. The typical problem studied is where Ω ⊂ Rn (n ≥ 1) is a regular and bounded domain, ∂Ω = Γ0 ∪ Γ1, m > 1, 2 ≤ p < r, where r = 2(n − 1)/(n − 2) when n ≥ 3, r = ∞ when n = 1, 2 and u0 ∈ H1(Ω), u0 = 0 on Γ0. We prove local existence of the solutions in H1(Ω) when m > r/(r + 1−p) or n = 1, 2 and global existence when p ≤ m or the initial datum is inside the potential well associated to the stationary problem.

Let S and T be formally symmetric ordinary differential operators defined on a real interval I. It is assumed that the order of S is constant and everywhere strictly higher than the possibly varying order of T. The main result of this paper (Theorem 2.3) gives necessary and sufficient conditions for maximality of the deficiency indices of the differential relation Su = Tv considered in a Hilbert space with a scalar product which is a Dirichlet integral (see section 2) belonging to S. The conditions generalise those given in [5] for less general choices of operators S and T. For certain choices of Dirichlet integral they are explicit integrability conditions on the coefficients of the Dirichlet integral and the operator T.

Let V be any vector space and P(V) the set of all partial linear transformations defined on V, that is, all linear α: A → B, where A, B are subspaces of V. Then P(V) is a semigroup under composition, which is partially ordered by ⊆ (that is, α ⊆ β if and only if dom α ⊆ dom β and α = β | dom α). We compare this order with the so-called 'natural partial order' ≤ on P(V) and we determine their meet and join. We also describe all elements of P(V) that are minimal (or maximal) with respect to each of these four orders, and we characterize all elements that are 'compatible' with them. In addition, we answer similar questions for the semigroup T(V) consisting of all α ∈ P(V) whose domain equals V. Other orders have been defined by Petrich on any regular semigroup: three of them form a chain below ≤, and we show that two of these are equal on the semigroup P(V) and on the ring T(V). We also consider questions for these orders that are similar to those already mentioned

We establish a symmetrization procedure in the context of general orthogonal expansions associated with a second-order differential operator L, a Laplacian. Combining with a unified conjugacy scheme from an earlier paper by Nowak and Stempak permits, using a suitable embedding, a differential-difference Laplacian to be associated with the initially given orthogonal system of eigenfunctions of L, so that the resulting extended conjugacy scheme has the natural classical shape. This means, in particular, that the related partial derivatives decomposing are skew-symmetric in an appropriate L2 space and they commute with Riesz transforms and conjugate Poisson integrals. The results also shed new light on the issue of defining higher-order Riesz transforms for general orthogonal expansions.

We study the asymptotic behaviour, as t → ∞, of the solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation

We show that if u(x,t) is a viscosity solution to the above equation in a cylinder Ω × (0, ∞) with time-independent lateral boundary values, then it converges to the unique stationary solution h as t → ∞. Moreover, we provide an estimate for the decay rate of maxx∈Ω∣u(x,t) − h(x)∣.

In Statistical Methods for Research Workers R. A. Fisher (1) has given a numerical method of curve fitting by means of orthogonal polynomials. It is proposed here to show how the properties of these polynomials and a general formula for them may be developed from the properties of their terminal differences, thus providing general proofs of the properties utilised in the numerical method.

We have been interested in studying a nonlinear variational wave equation whose wave speed is a sinusoidal function of the wave amplitude, arising naturally from liquid crystals. High-frequency waves of small amplitudes, the so-called weakly nonlinear waves, near a constant state a are governed by two asymptotic equations: the first-order asymptotic equation if a is not a critical point of the sinusoidal function, or the second-order asymptotic equation if a is either a maximal or a minimal point of the sinusoidal function. Our earlier work on the first-order asymptotic equation has greatly helped the study of the nonlinear variational wave equation with monotone wave speed functions. It is apparent in our research that investigation of the second-order asymptotic equation is both crucial and equally illuminating for the study of the nonlinear variational wave equation with sinusoidal wave speed functions. We succeed in this paper in handling what may be appropriately called the ‘concentration-annihilation’ phenomena in the historical spirit of compensated-compactness (Tartar et al.), concentration-compactness (Lions), and concentration-cancellation or concentration-evanesces (DiPerna and Majda). More precisely, the second-order asymptotic equation has a product term uv2 for which v2 may have concentration on a set where u vanishes in a sequence of approximate solutions, while the product retains no concentration. Although absent in the first-order asymptotic equation, this concentration-annihilation phenomenon has been demonstrated through an explicit example for the nonlinear variational wave equation with sinusoidal wave speed functions in an earlier work. We use this concentration-annihilation to establish the global existence of weak solutions to the second-order asymptotic equation with initial data of bounded total variations.

The aim of this paper is to show that the p-local homotopy type of the gauge group of a principal bundle over an even-dimensional sphere is completely determined by the divisibility of the classifying map by p. In particular, for gauge groups of principal SU(n)-bundles over S2d for 2 ≤ d ≤ p − 1 and n ≤ 2p − 1, we give a concrete classification of their p-local homotopy types.

We establish some regularity criteria in terms of the velocity field with weight for the Navier—Stokes equations in ℝ3. It is proved that if the weak solution satisfies

The exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems can be treated very satisfactorily by using a fundamental solution which is modified by adding radiating spherical wave functions. It has been shown [3], that the coefficients of these added terms can be chosen to ensure that the associated boundary integral equation formulation of the problem was uniquely solvable and, in addition, that the modified Green's function was a least squares best approximation to the exact Green's function for the problem. Here we show that the coefficients can be chosen to ensure not only unique solvability but also minimization of the norm of the modified integral operator. This leads to a constructive method of solution. The theory is illustrated when the boundary is a sphere and when it is a perturbation of a sphere.

It is shown that in the Hartree approximation the energy functional of the helium atom reaches its minimum and that the corresponding minimizing function is a solution of the Hartree equation.

Transmission problems for the vector Helmholtz equation are considered. By using boundary integral equation methods, existence and uniqueness theorems in the form of Fredholm's alternative are established.

We consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear parabolic equations $u_t=\Delta\phi(u)+f(u)$, with the bounded non-negative initial data $u_0(x)$ ($u_0(x)\not\equiv0$), where $f(\xi)$ is a positive function in $\xi>0$ satisfying a blow-up condition $\int_1^{\infty}1/f(\xi)\,\mathrm{d}\xi<\infty$. We study blow-up of non-negative solutions with the least blow-up time, i.e. the time coinciding with the blow-up time of a solution of the corresponding ordinary differential equation $\mathrm{d} v/\mathrm{d} t=f(v)$ with the initial data $\|u_0\|_{L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)}>0$. Such a blow-up solution blows up at space infinity in some direction (directional blow-up) and this direction is called a blow-up direction. We give a sufficient condition on $u_0$ for directional blow-up. Moreover, we completely characterize blow-up directions by the profile of the initial data, which gives a sufficient and necessary condition on $u_0$ for blow-up with the least blow-up time, provided that $f(\xi)$ grows more rapidly than $\phi(\xi)$.

In this paper, the formally J-symmetric Sturm—Liouville operator with complex-valued coefficients is considered, and as a preliminary two criteria are established for the J-selfadjointness of certain of its extensions. The main purpose of the work is to give results on the location of the point spectra of such operators. Some of the results are extensions of results known for real-valued coefficients, whilst others are new.
