At the IAU symposium in Shanghai September 1992 the present author made the first proposal for a specific mission concept post-Hipparcos, the first scanning astrometry mission with CCDs in time-delayed integration mode (TDI). Direct imaging on CCDs in long-focus telescopes was described as later adopted for the Gaia mission. The mission called Roemer was designed to provide accurate astrometry and multi-colour photometry of 400 million stars brighter than 18 mag in a five-year mission. The early years of this mission concept are reviewed.

We present results of astrometric observations of S269 H2O maser performed with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have monitored the positions of S269 H2O masers for 1 year and successfully detected its parallax to be 189±8 micro-arcsecond. This corresponds to a source distance of 5.28+0.24−0.22 kpc, and is the smallest parallax (and thus the largest distance) that has ever been measured by means of annual parallax. Proper motions of S269 H2O maser were also measured and used to determine the Galactic rotation velocity at the position of S269. Our measurements show that the Galactic rotation velocity at S269 is the same to that at the Sun within 3%, indicating that the Galactic rotation curve is flat out to R~13 kpc.

Dynamical mass estimates of ultra-compact dwarfs galaxies and massive globular clusters in the Fornax and Virgo clusters and around the giant elliptical Cen A have revealed some surprising results: 1) above ~106M⊙ the mass-to-light (M/L) ratio increases with the objects' mass; 2) some UCDs/massive GCs show high M/L values (4 to 6) that are not compatible with standard stellar population models; and 3) in the luminosity-velocity dispersion diagram, UCDs deviate from the well-defined relation of “normal” GCs, being more in line with the Faber-Jackson relation of early-type galaxies. In this contribution, we present the observational evidences for high mass-to-light ratios of UCDs and discuss possible explanations for them.

We present recent results from a Keck study of the composition of the Galactic bulge, as well as results from the bulge Bulge Radial Velocity Assay (BRAVA). Culminating a 10 year investigation, Fulbright, McWilliam, & Rich (2006, 2007) solved the problem of deriving the iron abundance in the Galactic bulge, and find enhanced alpha element abundances, consistent with the earlier work of McWilliam & Rich (1994). We also report on a radial velocity survey of 2MASS-selected M giant stars in the Galactic bulge, observed with the CTIO 4m Hydra multi-object spectrograph. This program is to test dynamical models of the bulge and to search for and map any dynamically cold substructure in the Galactic bulge. We show initial results on fields at −10° < l < + 10° and b = −4°. We construct a longitude-velocity plot for the bulge stars and the model data, and find that contrary to previous studies, the bulge does not rotate as a solid body; from −5° < l < + 5° the rotation curve has a slope of ≈ 100 km s−1 and flattens considerably at greater l and reaches a maximum rotation of 45 km s−1 (heliocentric) or ~ 70 km s−1 (Galactocentric). This rotation is slower than that predicted by the dynamical model of Zhao (1996).

An overview of currently available, large-area, proper-motion catalogs is presented. These include the well-known catalogs based on historical Schmidt-telescope surveys as well as other projects that make use of observational material the primary purpose of which, from inception, was the determination of proper motions. The various catalogs are characterized and compared, with an emphasis on their limitations and their appropriateness for various astrophysical uses.

In addition to allowing for the maintenance of a practical celestial reference system, absolute proper-motion surveys provide the raw material from which a better understanding of our Galaxy's structure and kinematics can be built. Several examples will be cited in which large proper-motion surveys are used to probe and describe the distinct stellar components that comprise our Milky Way Galaxy.

OH(1720 MHz) and methanol masers are now recognized to be excellent probes of the interactions of supernova remnants with molecular clouds and tracers of massive star formation, respectively. To better understand the nature of star formation activity in the central region of the Galaxy, we have used these two classes of masers combined with the IRAC and MIPS data to study prominent sites of ongoing star formation in the nuclear disk. The nuclear disk is characterized by massive GMCs with elevated gas temperatures, compared to their dust temperatures. We note an association between methanol masers and a class of mid-infrared “green sources”. These highly embedded YSOs show enhanced 4.5μm emission due to excited molecular lines.

The distribution of methanol masers and supernova remnants suggest a low efficiency of star formation (with the exception of Sgr B2), which we believe is due to an enhanced flux of cosmic ray electrons impacting molecular clouds in the nuclear disk. We also highlight the importance of cosmic rays in their ability to heat molecular clouds, and thus increase the gas temperature.

A series of ground-based, dedicated astrometric, observational programs have been performed or are in preparation which provide a dense and accurate optical reference frame. Integral to all these programs are new observations to link the Hipparcos Celestial Reference Frame (HCRF) to the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF), based on compact, extragalactic radio sources.

The U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC) 3rd release is in preparation. A pixel re-reduction is in progress to improve astrometric and photometric accuracy as well as completeness of this all-sky reference catalog to 16th magnitude. Optical counterparts of ICRF radio sources have been observed with 0.9-meter telescopes contemporaneously. Scanning of over 5000 early-epoch astrograph plates on StarScan has been completed. These data will improve the proper motions of stars in the 10 to 14 mag range for the UCAC3 release.

A 111 million-pixel CCD was successfully fabricated in 2006 and test observations at the USNO astrograph are underway. Four of such detectors will be used for the USNO Robotic Astrometric Telescope (URAT) focal plane assembly. Phase I of URAT will use the astrograph to reach 18th magnitude, while the new 0.85-meter telescope with a 4.5 deg diameter field of view will reach 21st magnitude. The URAT primary mirror has been fabricated.

We present a Gemini/GMOS program to measure spectroscopic metallicities and ages of globular clusters (GCs) and nuclei in dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. Preliminary results indicate that the globular clusters are old and metal-poor, very similar to the GCs in the Milky Way halo. The nuclei tend to be more metal-rich than the globular clusters but more metal-poor and older, on average, than the stars in the bodies of the galaxies. The [α/Fe] ratio appears to be solar for the GCs, nuclei, and dEs, but the uncertainties do not exclude some globular clusters from being enhanced in alpha elements.

We discuss oxygen and iron abundance patterns in K and M red-giant members of the Galactic bulge and in the young and massive M-type stars inhabiting the very center of the Milky Way. The abundance results from the different bulge studies in the literature, both in the optical and the infrared, indicate that the [O/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation in the bulge does not follow the disk relation, with [O/Fe] values falling above those of the disk. Based on these elevated values of [O/Fe] extending to large Fe abundances, it is suggested that the bulge underwent a rapid chemical enrichment with perhaps a top-heavy initial mass function. The Galactic Center stars reveal a nearly uniform and slightly elevated (relative to solar) iron abundance for a studied sample which is composed of 10 red giants and supergiants. Perhaps of more significance is the fact that the young Galactic Center M-type stars show abundance patterns that are reminiscent of those observed for the bulge population and contain enhanced abundance ratios of α-elements relative to either the Sun or Milky Way disk at near-solar metallicities.

We have measured the distance to the high-mass star-forming region G59.7+0.1, which harbors the far-infra-red source IRAS 19410+2336. The distance is 2.20 ± 0.11 kpc and was determined by triangulation using Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 12.2 GHz methanol masers phase-referenced to two compact extragalactic radio sources.

Recent HST observations have revealed that compact sources exist at the centers of many galaxies across the Hubble sequence. These sources are called “nuclear star clusters” (NCs), because their structural properties and scaling relationships are similar to those of globular clusters (GCs). It has been also found that the relationship between the masses of NCs and that of the host galaxies is similar to that obeyed by supermassive black holes (SBHs). In this observational frame, the hypothesis that galactic nuclei may be the remains of GCs driven inward to the galactic center by dynamical friction and there merged, finds an exciting possible confirm. In this short paper we report of our recent results on GC mergers obtained by mean of detailed N-body simulations.

We describe the boxy bulge, long stellar bar and elliptical ring of the Galaxy. This model has largely evolved from NIR survey work by many teams and differs from other models with a monolithic ellipsoidal bulge. We maintain that the structure of the inner Galaxy can only be properly studied by adequately sampling the entire Galactic plane for |l| < 30°, |b| < 1.5°, and that the bulge is best studied at least 3° from the plane. We briefly report a slight radially outwardly increasing metallicity gradient along the bar and reaffirm de Vaucouleurs & Pence's (1978) suggestion that the Galaxy is probably of morphological type SAB(rs)bc II.

We present TCS-CAIN, a NIR survey of the Galactic plane, recently made public at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, and some results derived from it: with star counts derived directly the structure of the inner the Milky Way can be dissected, obtaining also estimations for the extinction toward the inner MW.

The GSC 2.3 is a current catalog release extracted from the Guide Star Catalog II database, which is maintained at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA. The catalog contains astrometry, multi-band photometry (BJ, RJ, IN) and star/non-star classification for 945,592,683 objects down to the magnitude limit of the survey plates. We review the performance of stellar parameters, anticipating the improvements in astrometric accuracy foreseen by its recalibration with the newly available catalog in the UCAC series.

VLBI phase-referencing monitoring of water vapor masers around the red supergiant, S Per, was conducted over four years. We successfully obtained proper motions and an annual parallax of the masers and determined the distance to S Per of 2.51±0.09 kpc. The proper motion of the star itself was inferred from the maser proper motions, and it was −0.38 and −1.54 mas/yr for right ascension and declination, respectively. Assuming the distance from the sun to the Galactic center, R0, of 8.5 kpc and the rotation velocity around the sun, Θ0, of 220 km/s, the Galactic rotation velocity around S Per is 200 km/s.

The advent of next-generation telescopes with very wide fields-of-view creates a need for deep and precise reference frames for astrometric calibrations. The Deep Astrometric Standards (DAS) program is designed to establish such a frame, by providing absolute astrometry at the 5–10 mas level in four 10 deg2 Galactic fields, to a depth of V=25. The source of our basic reference frame is the UCAC2 catalog, significantly improved by additional observations, and new VLBI positions of radio-loud and optically visible QSOs. We describe all the major steps in the construction of the DAS fields and provide the current status of this project.

Using the most advanced anisotropic (2D) Fokker-Planck (FP) models, we calculate the evolution of the mass functions of the Galactic globular cluster system (GCMF). Our models include two-body relaxation, binary heating, tidal shocks, dynamical friction, stellar evolution, and realistic cluster orbits. We perform 2D-FP simulations for a large number of virtual globular clusters and synthesize these results to study the relation between the initial and present GCMFs. We found two probable IGCMFs that eventually evolve into the Milky Way GCMF : truncated power-law, and log-normal model with higher initial low mass limit and peak mass than the earlier studies.

We report the progress in our measurement of the 3-D kinematics in several low foreground extinction windows of the Galactic Bulge. In order to complete the 3-D kinematics of as many stars as possible, proper motions and radial velocities have been obtained using HST WFPC2-ACS and VLT VIMOS respectively. Our preliminary results for fields close to the galactic minor axis show a significant vertex deviation, which can be directly related to a signature of triaxility. This is one of the strongest proofs to date of the presence of the stellar bar in the galactic bulge.

Galactic nuclei are well known sources of OH and H2O maser emission. It appears that intense star formation in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies drives most OH sources. In contrast, nuclear activity appears to drive most H2O sources. When H2O emission originates in accretion disk structures, constrained geometry and dynamics enable robust interpretation of spectroscopic and imaging data. The principal science includes study of AGN geometry at parsec and sub-parsec radii and measurement of geometric distances in the Hubble Flow. New high accuracy estimates of the “Hubble constant, H○” obtained from maser distances may enable new substantively improved constraints on fundamental cosmological parameters (e.g., dark energy).

We describe efforts over the last six years to implement regularization methods suitable for studying one or more interacting black holes by direct N-body simulations. Three different methods have been adapted to large-N systems: (i) Time-Transformed Leapfrog, (ii) Wheel-Spoke, and (iii) Algorithmic Regularization. These methods have been tried out with some success on GRAPE-type computers. Special emphasis has also been devoted to including post-Newtonian terms, with application to moderately massive black holes in stellar clusters. Some examples of simulations leading to coalescence by gravitational radiation will be presented to illustrate the practical usefulness of such methods.
