A proper motion study of a field of 20′ × 20′ inside Plaut's low extinction window (l,b)=(0o, −8o), has been completed. Relative proper motions and photographic BV photometry have been derived for ~ 21,000 stars reaching to V ~ 20.5 mag, based on the astrometric reduction of 43 photographic plates, spanning over 21 years of epoch difference. Proper motion errors are typically 1 mas yr−1. Cross-referencing with the 2MASS catalog yielded a sample of ~ 8700 stars, from which predominantly disk and bulge subsamples were selected photometrically from the JH color-magnitude diagram. The two samples exhibited different proper-motion distributions, with the disk displaying the expected reflex solar motion. Galactic rotation was also detected for stars between ~2 and ~3 kpc from us. The bulge sample, represented by red giants, has an intrinsic proper motion dispersion of (σl, σb) = (3.39, 2.91)±(0.11, 0.09) mas yr−1, which is in good agreement with previous results. A mean distance of kpc has been estimated for the bulge sample, based on the observed K magnitude of the horizontal branch red clump. The metallicity [M/H] distribution was also obtained for a subsample of 60 bulge giants stars, based on calibrated photometric indices. The observed [M/H] shows a peak value at [M/H] ~ −0.1 with an extended metal poor tail and around 30% of the stars with supersolar metallicity. No change in proper motion dispersion was observed as a function of [M/H]. We are currently in the process of obtaining CCD UBV RI photometry for the entire proper-motion sample of ~ 21,000 stars.

The space astrometry mission Gaia will construct a dense optical QSO-based celestial reference frame. For consistency between the optical and radio positions, it will be important to align the Gaia frame and the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) with the highest accuracy. Currently, it is found that only 10% of the ICRF sources are suitable to establish this link, either because they are not bright enough at optical wavelengths or because they have significant extended radio emission which precludes reaching the highest astrometric accuracy. In order to improve the situation, we have initiated a VLBI survey dedicated to finding additional high-quality radio sources for aligning the two frames. The sample consists of about 450 sources, typically 20 times weaker than the current ICRF sources, which have been selected by cross-correlating optical and radio catalogues. This paper presents the observing strategy and includes preliminary results of observation of 224 of these sources with the European VLBI Network in June 2007.

A wealth of new information about the structure of the maser disk in NGC 4258 has been obtained from a series of 18 VLBA observations spanning three years, as well as from 32 additional epochs of spectral monitoring data from 1994 to the present, acquired with the VLA, Effelsberg, and GBT. The warp of the disk has been defined precisely. The thickness of the maser disk has been measured to be 12 micro-arcseconds (FWHM), which is slightly smaller than previously quoted upper limits. Under the assumption that the masers trace the true vertical distribution of material in the disk, from the condition of hydrostatic equilibrium the sound speed is 1.5 km s−1, corresponding to a thermal temperature of 600K. The accelerations of the high velocity maser components have been accurately measured for many features on both the blue and red side of the spectrum. The azimuthal offsets of these masers from the midline (the line through the disk in the plane of the sky) and derived projected offsets from the midline based on the warp model correspond well with the measured offsets. This result suggests that the masers are well described as discrete clumps of masing gas, which accurately trace the Keplerian motion of the disk. However, we have continued to search for evidence of apparent motions caused by “phase effects.” This work provides the foundation for refining the estimate of the distance to NGC 4258 through measurements of feature acceleration and proper motion. The refined estimate of this distance is expected to be announced in the near future.

Since we cannot put stars in a laboratory, astrophysicists had to wait till the invention of computers before becoming laboratory scientists. For half a century now, we have been conducting experiments in our virtual laboratories. However, we ourselves have remained behind the keyboard, with the screen of the monitor separating us from the world we are simulating. Recently, 3D on-line technology, developed first for games but now deployed in virtual worlds like Second Life, is beginning to make it possible for astrophysicists to enter their virtual labs themselves, in virtual form as avatars. This has several advantages, from new possibilities to explore the results of the simulations to a shared presence in a virtual lab with remote collaborators on different continents. I will report my experiences with the use of Qwaq Forums, a virtual world developed by a new company (see http://www.qwaq.com).

Infrared Astrometry is one of the seven subdivisions of astrometry that detects emission in the range from 0.7 to 350 μm. We introduce a Japanese space astrometry project which is called JASMINE. JASMINE (Japan Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfrared Exploration) will measure distances and tangential motions of stars in the Galactic bulge with yet unprecedented precision. JASMINE will operate in z-band whose central wavelength is 0.9 micron. It will measure parallaxes, positions with accuracy of about 10 micro-arcsec and proper motions with accuracy of about 10 micro- arcsec/year for the stars brighter than z=14 mag. The number of stars observed by JASMINE with high accuracy of parallaxes in the Galactic bulge is much larger than that observed in other space astrometry projects operating in optical bands. With the completely new “map of the Galactic bulge” including motions of bulge stars, we expect that many new exciting scientific results will be obtained in studies of the Galactic bulge. One of them is the construction of the dynamical structure of the Galactic bulge. Kinematics and distance data given by JASMINE are the closest approach to a view of the exact dynamical structure of the Galactic bulge.

Presently, JASMINE is in a development phase, with a target launch date around 2016. We comment on the outline of JASMINE mission, scientific targets and a preliminary design of JASMINE in this paper.

Highly accurate astrometry of asteroids in the frame of QSOs will provide the direct link between the Dynamical Reference Frame and the International Celestial Reference Frame. We propose a procedure that implies a selection of events for asteroids with accurately determined orbits crossing the CCD field containing the selected quasars. For asteroid ephemerides, a numerical integration method coupled with precise modelling of asteroid brightness will be used for analyzing our observations. A list of predictions for this type of “close approaches” will be presented.

A determination of the Hubble Constant (H0) to better than 3% would be the best complement to cosmic microwave background (CMB) data to constrain the equation of state of Dark Energy. Water vapor megamasers provide perhaps the best opportunity for measuring direct distances to galaxies out to about 200 Mpc. We have formed a team of astronomers in the Megamaser Cosmology Project to pursue the ambitious goal of making a precise measurement of H0 by measuring such distances using the techniques pioneered on the disk maser in NGC 4258 by Herrnstein et al (1999). In recent surveys we have made significant progress identifying new maser systems analogous to that in NGC 4258, but more distant. Once the appropriate candidates are identified, two types of observations are necessary to ultimately measure a distance: single-dish monitoring to measure the acceleration of gas in the disk, and sensitive VLBI imaging in order to measure the angular size of the disk, measure the rotation curve, and model radial displacement of the systemic maser features. We have recently obtained preliminary VLBI maps of the masers in two systems, NGC 6323 and UGC 3789. The maser disks in both galaxies were discovered and monitored with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and subsequently imaged with the High Sensitivity Array (VLBA + GBT + Effelsberg). In this contribution we present a map of the maser distribution in one of those systems, NGC 6323. The map demonstrates that pc-scale maser disks as distant as ~ 100 Mpc can be imaged with existing telescopes. Results on UGC 3789 will be presented in a later publication.

We intend to map the differential extinction and remove their effects in a sample of clusters in the direction of the inner Galaxy using a new dereddening technique. These observations and their analyses will let us produce high quality color-magnitude diagrams of these poorly studied clusters that will allow us to determine these clusters' relative ages, distances and chemistry and to address important questions about the formation and the evolution of the inner Galaxy.

I'll summarize the current status of GRAPE project. GRAPE-6, completed in 2002, has been used by a number of people, for a wide variety of problems such as planet formation, star cluster dynamics, galactic nuclei, and cosmology. In 2004, we started the development of the next-generation machine, GRAPE-DR. GRAPE-DR has a architecture radically different from that of previous GRAPEs. It does not have hardwired pipeline for gravitational force calculation but a large number of small and simple programmable processors. This change made it possible to apply GRAPE-DR to a wide range of problems to which GRAPE was not efficient, and at the same time it helps us to explore new algorithms for N-body simulations. The GRAPE-DR chip was completed in 2006, and second prototype board was completed in May 2007. We hope to have full production-level board commercially available by the end of year 2007. A single board will offer the theoretical peak speed of 2 Tflops, about 20 times as that of a single PCI card version of GRAPE-6.

Based on the Calc/Solve system and aiming at the selection of stable sources, we have obtained a series of global solutions to astrometric/geodetic VLBI observations from 1984 to 2006 by changing the settings of the control parameters. After comparing the solutions and performing statistical analysis we proposed a list of 173 candidate stable sources. We also compared the list with those recommended by others authors.

We have developed a new tree-direct hybrid algorithm, “Bridge”. It can simulate small scale systems embedded within large-N systems fully self-consistently. Using this algorithm, we have performed full N-body simulations of star clusters near the Galactic center (GC) and compared the orbital evolutions of the star cluster with those obtained by “traditional” simulations, in which the orbital evolution of the star clusters is calculated from the dynamical friction formula. We found that the inspiral timescale of the star cluster is shorter than that obtained with traditional simulations. Moreover, we investigated the eccentricities of particles escaped from the star cluster. Eccentric orbit of the star cluster can naturally explain the high eccentricities of the observed stars.

In 2004 the Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search (SWEEPS) project undertook a very deep ACS/WFC exposure-set of the Sgr-I low-reddening window in the Galactic Bulge, with repeat observations 2.04 years later. The combination of superb first-epoch sampling, wide field of view and high PSF stability of ACS/WFC on Hubble allows proper motions to be extracted for more than 137,000 objects, over 85,000 to accuracy better than 0.3 mas yr−1. We present these proper motions and outline some of the uses to which they have been put, including the separation of a pure-Bulge sample and the inner Galactic rotation curve.

We present an atlas of extragalactic water vapor masers. As of 2007, one hundred galaxies have been detected as sources of water vapor maser emission, two thirds of them discovered since 2003. Extragalactic water masers fall in at least three categories: those associated with nuclear jets or winds, those in starbursts or star-forming regions, and those in AGN accretion disks. While all maser systems offer the possibility of unique investigations into their physical environments, it is the disk masers that have been most aggressively sought because of their potential for use as precision distance indicators. Type 2 Seyfert and LINER galaxies are hosts to such disk masers. Insingle-dish spectra, disk masers are often revealed by the presence of high-velocity emission features (defined roughly by having anomalous velocities in excess of 200 km s−1). About one third of the extragalactic water masers detected to date show evidence of disk origin. Only a few galaxies are currently identified as jet-type or star-forming type. The remaining systems show only a few narrow doppler components, usually near the systemic velocity, and are difficult to categorize. These unclassified systems are detected toward AGNs and are also possibly associated with disks or winds near the nucleus. Detection rates in large maser surveys are typically 5% or less, but the observing efficiency and sensitivity of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) allow for short integration times (typically 10 minutes to detect a narrow 30 mJy line) so many galaxies can be searched. Recently, GBT surveys targeting type 2 Seyfert galaxies identified by the SDSS have been the most productive, identifying 17 systems in surveys observed during 2006.

Using the (J − K, K) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 16 metal-poor globular clusters in the Galactic bulge, we investigate the morphological properties of their red-giant branch (RGB), comparing with those of metal-rich clusters in the Galactic bulge and metal-poor clusters in the Galactic halo. The RGB morphological parameters, such as colors at fixed magnitudes, magnitudes at a fixed color, the RGB slope, and a difference of color indices at two fixed magnitudes have been derived from the near-IR CMDs for each cluster. Metal-poor Galactic bulge clusters follow the previous empirical relations between colors at fixed magnitudes and magnitudes at a fixed color of the RGB and the cluster's metallicity. However, the RGB slope and the color difference parameters of some bulge clusters deviate slightly from the previous empirical linear relations for the other globular clusters, implying that the metal-poor bulge clusters may have different formation origin from the other globular clusters in the Galaxy.

We present astrometric results from 7 observing runs at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) 0.9m telescope of 197 extragalactic reference frame sources, selected from the original International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) catalog. This is part of the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) reference frame link program. Contemporaneous to the CTIO deep imaging, wide-field CCD data were taken with the USNO Twin Astrograph to provide accurate secondary reference stars in the 13 to 16 mag range. The optical positions are on the Hipparcos system (via Tycho-2 stars). The unweighted, mean RMS of positional differences ‘optical–radio’ for a single source is 28 and 25 mas for RA and Dec, respectively.

We have searched for 22 GHz water maser emission in a sample of FIR bright galaxies and detected two new kilomaser sources. The newly detected masers have been promptly followed-up using interferometric observations to derive positions and constraints on the size and brightness temperature of the emitting spots. Here we report results related to the newly detected kilomasers, also including the well-known kilomaser source in in NGC 253. These are discussed within the framework of the kilomaser/megamaser dichotomy.

In the numerical simulations of evolution of star clusters, binary-single star interactions frequently take place. Since the direct integration of them is time consuming, distant interactions between binaries and field stars are often integrated by using some approximations. Traditionally the effect of the error caused by the approximated treatment is regarded as small enough to be ignored. However, if we have a binary-dominated core, the energy drift is large. In this study, we perform numerical experiments to evaluate the effect of neglecting the weak perturbation from distant single particles. We developed an N-body integrator which can manipulate multiple precision floating point numbers.

We present VLBA observation towards the nucleus of a nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052. In NGC 1052, two-sided jet structure and a dense plasma circumnuclear torus with a radius of 0.7 pc have been found around the central mass. It emits a H2O megamaser, which is redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy (1491 kms−1) with a large velocity width of 100 kms−1 (FWHM). The maser gas is found at the inner jet components of both the approaching and receding jets. The maser gas is positionally coincident with a plasma torus. The maser gas in NGC 1052 could be explained as a circumnuclear torus or disk, as found for the nucleus of NGC 4258.

To make GSC-II more accurate and useful, it is necessary to re-calibrate GSC-II when a better reference catalogue (UCAC2) is available. With UCAC2 as the reference, preliminary re-calibration of some sample plates from GSC2.3 were carried out with different methods, such as Global, Mask and Filter. The results indicate that a 7th-order polynomial is sufficient to account for the influence of Schmidt plate deformation on the measured coordinates of stars. The magnitude equation can be eliminated after correcting for a common magnitude equation. The RMS of the re-calibrated data is around ±0.2~0.3 arcsec.
