We present studies of Long Period Variables (LPVs) in our Galaxy based on astrometric VLBI observations of H2O and SiO masers. The Galactic Miras and OH/IR stars are our main targets. For Miras, we present the distribution of the LPVs on the MK – log P plane. Galactic Miras show consistency with PLR in the LMC except for some fainter sources. Parallaxes of the LPVs determined from VLBI and Gaia are compared. There seems to be some offset.

We study the evolution of star clusters in the Galactic tidal field starting from their birth in molecular clumps. Our model clusters form according to the local-density-driven cluster formation model in which the stellar density profile is steeper than that of gas. As a result, clusters resist the gas expulsion better than predicted by earlier models.

We vary the impact of the Galactic tidal field λ, considering different Galactocentric distances (3-18 kpc), as well as different cluster sizes. Our model clusters survive the gas expulsion independent of λ.

We investigated the relation between the cluster mass at the onset of secular evolution and their dissolution time. The model clusters formed with a high star-formation efficiency (SFE) follow a tight mass-dependent dissolution relation, in agreement with previous theoretical studies. However, the low-SFE models present a shallower mass-dependent relation than high-SFE clusters, and most dissolve before reaching 1 Gyr (cluster teenage mortality).

Recent theories on the formation of the Solar System turned the attention to the study of low mass cloud cores in massive star forming regions. The Rosette Molecular Cloud is a well-known star forming area having highly filamentary structure with dense cores covering a wide range of masses. These pre- and protostellar cores were observed by Herschel and key core properties were derived from its data. With the Effelsberg 100m telescope a sample of these cores with masses ranging between 3-40 M⊙ were observed in ammonia inversion lines. In this work we are examining the correlations between these two datasets with the aim of gaining insight of the processes behind the star formation of the region.

By compiling abundances from red and blue supergiants (SGs) within the Local Universe, I present the Mass-Metallicity relation (MZR) using stellar tracers, demonstrating the excellent internal consistency. Comparing this result with nebular tracers, those empirically calibrated to direct-method studies provide the most consistent results.

We studied Planetary Nebulae (PNe) metallicity gradients using Ar abundances. We compared them with H ii regions in the galaxies of the local universe M 31, M 33, NGC 300 and in the Milky Way. Galactocentric radio (RG) and chemical abundances were collected from the literature, carefully selecting an homogeneous sample for each galaxy. In these galaxies, metallicity gradients computed with PNe abundances are flatter than those of H ii regions.

We present the study of horizontal branch morphology of the cluster NGC 6656. A blueward shift in temperature of about ~5000 K (nM-jump) in the color-color plot is detected.To explain this feature, we study the presence of stellar-mass black hole by plotting Projected density profile (PDP) in the central HST region. The PDP in the inner region (r < 10″) can be nicely reproduced by the king+BH model. The blue ward shift in temperature can be due the presence of stellar mass black holes in the centre.

The Planck all-sky submillimetre observations have made it possible to study Galactic cold clumps in diverse environments, to probe dust properties and to examine the earliest stages of star formation. The TOP-SCOPE joint survey program aims to statistically study the evolution of molecular clouds and the initial conditions of star formation in a wide variety of environments. In this work we carry out an investigation of the 200 brightest compact sources detected by Planck.

We present our new investigation aimed to estimate the mass-loss and dust production rates of carbon-rich stars (C-stars) in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). We compute dust growth and radiative transfer in circumstellar envelopes of C-stars for a grid of stellar parameters and for selected optical constants that simultaneously reproduce the main colour–colour diagrams in the infrared. We employ these grids of spectra to fit the spectral energy distribution of C-stars in the MCs. We find that our estimates can be significantly different from the other ones in the literature.

The origin of optical-infrared variability in young, intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars is linked to their circumstellar disk. Therefore, variability could serve as a diagnostic tool to constrain the structure and dynamics of the (inner) disk. Here we discuss this diagnostic potential, and report some preliminary results from our coordinated BV RIJHKs and Spitzer monitoring observations of nine Herbig Ae stars. We aim to understand the response of the inner disks thermal emission on the changing stellar irradiation, and to separate it from UX Orionis-type fading events, which also provide information on the disk. This project is a pilot study for the era of time domain astronomy of young stars, opened by Kepler K2, Gaia, ASAS-SN, TESS, Spitzer, WISE, and JWST.

Bipolar and more complex morphologies observed in planetary nebulae have been explained by two principal hypotheses: by the existence of a companion producing a circumstellar disk, by the effects of a magnetic field, or by a combination of both. The polarimetric analysis of these objects could give information about the presence of dust grains aligned with any preferential direction, due to a magnetic field or to the action of radiative torques (RAT). We performed polarimetric observations of some planetary nebulae in order to detect linear polarization and (in the best scenario) to detect the signature of an accretion disk in these objects. We observed in the visual region with POLIMA at the San Pedro Mártir observatory, and with POLICAN the NIR polarimeter in the Guillermo Haro observatory. We present the result of these observations in one of these objects: the PN M2-9.

I present the results of a survey of the kinematics of a large sample of Galactic globular clusters performed thanks to the synergy between the 2nd Gaia data release and the most extensive collection of radial velocities. This unprecedented dataset of 3D velocities of thousand of stars in 62 globular clusters has been used to investigate the rotation patterns of these stellar systems providing insight into the impact of two-body relaxation and tides on the formation and evolution of their rotation.

Three-body interactions of stellar-mass binaries with intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in nuclei of globular clusters may produce specific features that may serve as an independent indicator of existence of the IMBHs. By means of direct N-body integrations we follow the dynamical evolution of globular clusters of moderate extension and mass with 50% binary population over a time span of ≍ 0.8 Gyr and compare the cases with and without the primordial binaries as well as with and without the IMBH. We show that (i) presence of the IMBH leads to rapid formation of a density cusp regardless of the initial binary fraction, (ii) binary rich clusters with the IMBH produce high velocity escapers at a rate of ≍ 0.1 Myr−1 and (iii) clusters hosting an IMBH together with high number of binaries form a denser halo of marginally unbound stars than clusters that lack either the IMBH or the binary population.

Carbon-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are major sources of gas and dust in the interstellar medium. During the brief (∼1000 yr) period in the evolution from AGB to the Planetary Nebula (PN) stage, the molecular composition evolves from mainly diatomic and small polyatomic species to more complex molecules. Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), we have carried out a spectral line survey of CRL 618, covering a frequency range of 281.9 to 359.4 GHz. More than 1000 lines were detected in the ∼60 GHz range, most of them assigned to HC3N and c-C3H2, and their isotopologues. About 200 lines are unassigned. Lines of CO, HCO+, and CS show the fast outflow wings, while the majority of line emission arises from a compact region of ∼1” diameter. We have analyzed the lines of HC3N, c-C3H2, CH3CN, and their isotopologues with rotation temperature diagrams.

We present gas-phase metallicity gradients of 84 star-forming galaxies between 0.08 < z < 0.84. Using the galaxies with reliably determined metallicity gradients, we measure the median metallicity gradient to be negative ( $\[ - 0.039_{ - 0.009}^{ + 0.007}{\kern 1pt} dex/kpc\]$ ). Underlying this, however, is significant scatter: (8 ± 3)% [7] of galaxies have significantly positive metallicity gradients, (38 ± 5)% [32] have significantly negative gradients, (31 ± 5)% [26] have gradients consistent with being flat. (The remaining (23 ± 5)% [19] have unreliable gradient estimates.)

Our aim is to present a new and so far most complete catalog of optically selected young stars. The basis of this work is an extensive literature search for young stars in all the known nearby (< 2 kpc) star forming regions, included in the Handbook of Star Forming Regions [4, 5], and in 67 additional catalogs. We collected data on known young, pre-main-sequence stars detected in optical bands. The catalog contains the celestial coordinates, object names, names of the enclosing star forming region, identification methods, distances, and other information (e.g., references, binarity) for 15208 young stellar objects. It is already in use by the Gaia Photometric Science Alerts Team to identify variable young stars in the Gaia data. Our catalog was cross-correlated with the Gaia DR2 and we obtained flux and distance estimations for 86% of the stars.

Young stellar objects often show photometric variability, which is well examined at optical wavelengths, but more and more infrared data are also available. The wavelength dependence of the variability carries information on the physical cause of the changing brightness. Here, we examine seven T Tauri-type stars known for their large amplitude variability selected from the Campaign 13 field of the Kepler K2 mission. We complemented the K2 light curves by multifilter optical monitoring observations made with the 90 cm Schmidt telescope of Konkoly Observatory, and by 3.6 and 4.5 μm infrared photometry with a 20 hours cadence using the Spitzer Space Telescope. We found that the wavelength dependence of the observed variability is not consistent with changing interstellar extinction. We suggest that the brightness changes are due to variable accretion, causing a variable illumination of the inner disk.

Outflows from AGB stars enrich the Galactic environment with metals and inject mechanical energy into the ISM. Radio spectroscopy can recover both properties through observations of molecular lines. We present results from SWAG: “Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center”. The survey covers the entire Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the inner 3.35° × 0.9° (∼480 × 130 pc) of the Milky Way that contains 5 × 107 M⊙ of molecular gas. Although our survey primarily targets the CMZ, we observe across the entire sightline through the Milky Way. AGB stars are revealed by their signature of double peaked 22 GHz water maser lines. They are distinguished by their spectral signatures and their luminosities, which reach up to 10−7 L⊙. Higher luminosities are usually associated with Young Stellar Objects located in CMZ star forming regions. We detect a population of ∼600 new water masers that can likely be associated with AGB outflows.

We present several results of the study of the evolution of globular clusters’ internal kinematics, as driven by two-body relaxation and the interplay between internal angular momentum and the external Galactic tidal field. Via a large suite of N-body simulations, we explored the three-dimensional velocity space of tidally perturbed clusters, by characterizing their degree of velocity dispersion anisotropy and their rotational properties. These studies have shown that a cluster’s kinematical properties contain distinct imprints of the cluster’s initial structural properties, dynamical history, and tidal environment. Building on this fundamental understanding, we then studied the dynamics of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters, with attention to the largely unexplored role of angular momentum.

. Metallicity gradients are most frequently investigated directly from galaxies observed in emission. We have shown that galaxies detected via strong quasar absorption lines also exhibits a metallicity gradient in the outskirts and circumgalactic medium out to ~40 kpc distance. We infer a metallicity gradient of −0.022 dex kpc−1 for absorption-selected systems at redshifts 0.1 z 3. Applying this metallicity gradient and a flattening of the gradient beyond 12 kpc, we demonstrate that absorption-selected galaxies obey the same mass-metallicity relation (MZR) as observed for luminosity-selected galaxies.
