A sample of AGB/RGB stars with an excess of Li abundances is considered in order to estimate their mass loss rates. Our method is based on a correlation between the Li abundances and the stellar luminosity, using a modified version of the Reimers formula. We have adopted a calibration based on an empirical correlation between the mass loss rate and stellar parameters. We conclude that most Li-rich stars have lower mass loss rates compared with the majority of AGB/RGB stars, which show no evidences of Li enhancements, so that the Li enrichment process is probably not associated with an increased mass loss rate.

During the early stages of planet formation accretion of small bodies add mass to the planet and deposit their energy kinetic energy. Caused by frictional heating and/or large stagnation pressures within the dense and extended atmospheres most of the in-falling bodies get destroyed by melting or break-up before they impact on the planet’s surface. The energy is added to the atmospheric layers rather than heating the planet directly. These processes can significantly alter the physical properties of protoplanets before they are exposed with their primordial atmospheres to the early stellar source when the protoplanetary disk becomes evaporated.

We consider a sample of dwarf galaxies with accurate distances and velocities around 14 massive groups in the Local Volume. We combine all the data into a single synthetic group, and then determine its radius of the zero-velocity surface, separating it against the global cosmic expansion. Our estimation is derived from fitting the the spherical infall model (including effects of the cosmological constant) to the observational data.

We found the optimal value of the radius to be 0.93 ± 0.02 Mpc. Assuming the Planck model parameters, it corresponds to the total mass of the synthetic group (1.6 ± 0.2) × 1012M⊙. Thus, we obtain the paradoxical result that the total mass of the synthetic group estimated on the scale of 3–4 its virial radius is only 60% of the virial mass estimate. Anyway, we conclude that wide outskirts of the nearby groups do not contain a large amount of hidden mass outside their virial radii.

The chemical abundances of the gas-phase and stellar components of disc galaxies are relevant to understand their formation and evolution. It has been shown that an inside-out disc formation yields negative chemical profiles. However, a large spread in metallicity gradients, including positive ones, has been reported by recent and more precise observations, suggesting the action of other physics processes such as gas outflows and inflows, radial migration, and mergers and interactions. Cosmological simulations that includes chemical models provide a tools to tackle the origin of the metallicity profiles and the action of those processes that might affect them as a function of time. I present a summary of the current state-of-knowledge from a numerical point of view and discuss the main results from the analysis of the EAGLE simulations.

In the collapsing phase of a molecular cloud, the molecular gas temperature is a key to understand the evolutionary process from a dense molecular cloud to stars. In order to know this, mapping observations in NH3 lines are required. Therefore, we made them based on the FUGIN (FOREST Unbiased Galactic plane Imaging survey with Nobeyama 45m telescope). The 6 maps were observed in NH3 (J,K) = (1,1), (2,2), (3,3) and H2O maser lines and obtained temperature maps; some show temperature gradient in a cloud. Additionally 72 cores were observed. These candidates were called as KAGONMA or KAG objects as abbreviation of KAgoshima Galactic Object survey with Nobeyama 45-M telescope in Ammonia lines. We show the results of two regions in W33 and discuss their astrophysical properties.

Dwarf galaxies provide us many important clues to understanding of galaxy formation. By using the current version of our own semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, in which cosmic structure forms and evolves based on the cold dark matter model of cosmology, we analyze dwarf galaxies. We find that the model well reproduces many properties such as magnitudes, sizes, and velocity dispersions of, especially, dwarf elliptical galaxies. We also find that the dynamical response of the gravitational potential well of dwarf galaxies to the supernova-induced gas removal plays a very important role to obtain large sizes and small velocity dispersions as observed.

The synthesis of dust grains mostly takes place in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. What are the precursor seeds of condensation nuclei and how do these particles evolve toward the micrometer sized grains that populate the interstellar medium? These are key questions of the NANOCOSMOS project. In this study, we carried out an observational study to constrain what the main gas-phase precursors of dust in C-rich AGB stars are.

The second data release of the Gaia mission coupled with ground-based spectroscopic observations has allowed the determination of the orbital parameters for almost all of the Galactic globular clusters, as well as for the known dwarf spheroidal galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Moreover, it has led to the discovery of dwarf galaxies that were accreted by the Galaxy long ago and that are now completely disrupted. By exploiting their dynamics in combination with the globular clusters age-metallicity relation, we investigated the clusters-to-dwarfs connection. We found that about 60 globulars likely formed in situ, and associated those that were accreted to the dwarf galaxy progenitor they likely formed in.

In the context of the STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy survey, we describe the preliminary results obtained for the fields around the globular cluster Pal 3 (about 2.75 square degrees), by exploiting the obtained g, r, i time series photometry. The final aim is to use variable stars as tools to verify and study the presence of streams around Pal 3. We found 20 candidate variable stars of which 7 RR Lyrae stars possibly belonging to Pal 3, also at large distance from the center. The distribution of the candidate RR Lyrae seems to confirm a preferential distribution in the north-east direction, confirming previous results in literature.

We present first results from a project aiming at a better understanding of how gas and dust interact in dust-driven winds from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. We are at the final stage of developing a new parallelised radiation-hydrodynamics (RHD) code for AGB-wind modelling including a new generalised implementation of drift. We also discuss first results from high-resolution box simulations of forced turbulence intended to give quantitative “3D corrections” to dust-driven winds from AGB stars. It is argued that modelling of dust-driven winds of AGB stars is a problem that may need to be treated in a less holistic way, where some parts of the problem are treated separately in detailed simulations and are parameterised back into a less detailed (1D spherically symmetric) model describing the entire picture.

In this work, we carry out two-fluid (gas+dust) hydrodynamical simulations on a large family of models in order to study the dust coagulation and the dust-gas dynamical processes in protoplanetary disks. Our theoretical effort is guided by the observational results of disks in nearby star forming regions at sub-millimeter and millimeter (mm) wavelengths. By a systematic comparison with the continuum emission at several mm bands from ALMA observations, we find that ringed structures are predicated in the unresolved faint disks for those with mm spectral indexes as low as about 2.0. Our parameter exploration can also be used to constrain the fragmentation velocity, one key parameter of the dust coagulation model, and some other disk parameters.

The time evolution of the radial metallicity gradient is one of the most important constraints for Milky Way chemical and chemo-dynamical models. In this talk we reviewed the status of the observational debate and presented a new measurement of the age dependence of the radial abundance gradients, using combined asteroseismic and spectroscopic observations of red giant stars. We compared our results to state-of-the-art chemo-dynamical Milky Way models and recent literature results obtained with open clusters and planetary nebulae, and propose a new method to infer the past history of the Galactic radial abundance profile.

In the last decade observations have been able to probe the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, in particular showing a variation of its faint-end with redshift. We employ the data of the Cluster-EAGLE project, a set of cosmological, hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of 30 galaxy clusters, to study the evolution of the galaxy luminostity functions in clusters with redshift. We compile a catalogue of simulated galaxies’ luminosities in the SDSS bands using the E-MILES spectra database, and taking into account dust attenuation. Stacked luminosity functions present little evolution with redshift of the faint-end slope from z=3.5 to z=0, regardless of the cluster mass.

Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) can create sufficiently large cores in dark matter haloes of dwarf galaxies if the self-interaction cross-section is sufficiently large on scales of dwarf galaxies. Such a large cross-section can be realized without changing the densities and shapes of cluster-size haloes by introducing a velocity dependent cross-section. Lowering the central densities of dwarf-size haloes, however, may change the strength of stellar feedback required to reproduce observed properties of dwarf galaxies such as the luminosity function of the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies. We perform simulations of galaxy formation by employing such a velocity dependent self-interaction cross-section to investigate the coupled effect of SIDM and feedback.

The factors controlling strong mass loss from evolved stars remain elusive, frustrating efforts to parameterise mass loss in models of evolved stars. We herein describe evidence we have collected to show that the mass-loss rate of stars is controlled by stellar pulsations, and that we are close to providing improved prescriptions for mass-loss rates from many kinds of evolved stars.

We investigate the old open cluster M67 using ultraviolet photometric data of Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope in multi-filter far-UV bands. M67, well known for the presence of several blue straggler stars (BSS), has been put to detailed tests to understand their formation pathways. Currently, there are three accepted formation channels: mass transfer due to Roche-lobe overflow in binary systems, stellar mergers either due to dynamical collisions or through coalescence of close binaries. So far, there had not been any confirmed detection of a white dwarf (WD) companion to any of the BSSs in this cluster. Here, we present the detection of WD companions to 5 bright BSSs in M67. The multiwavelength spectral energy distributions covering 0.12 -11.5 μm range, were found to require binary spectral fits for 5 BSSs, consisting of a cool (BSS) and a hot companion. The parameters (Luminosity, Temperature, Radius and Mass) of the hot companions suggest them to be WDs with mass in the range 0.2 - 0.35 M⊙ with Teff ~11000 –24000 K.

Hii regions in galaxy disks can be used as a powerful tool to trace the radial distribution of several of their properties and shed some light on the different relevant processes on galaxy formation and evolution. Among the properties that can be extracted from the study of the ionized gas are the metallicity, the excitation and the hardness of the ionizing field of radiation. In this contribution we focus on the determination of both the ionization parameter (U) and the effective temperature of the ionizing clusters (T) by means of a bayesian-like comparison between the observed relative fluxes of several emission-lines with the predictions from a set of photoionization models. We also show the implications that the use of our method has for the study of the radial variation of both U and T in some very well-studied disk galaxies of the Local Universe.

Thousands of planets outside the Solar system have been discovered, with exoplanets in different environments. Since we cannot expect to find an exoplanetary system fully resembling our Solar System, we consider a Solar System type configuration where the Earth moves in an eccentric orbit. We focus on young Earth 1 billion years ago, when the Sun’s extreme UV (EUV) flux was about 5 times higher than the current radiation. In case of eccentric motion of Earth, strong variations of the EUV flux would influence the evolution of the planet’s atmosphere (EUV radiation of 50 times the current EUV flux would be possible). Taking into account a certain amount of Nitrogen in the atmosphere of such a young Earth, we study the non-thermal loss of N2 over a long time interval. We therefore investigate to what extent eccentric motion will influence the conditions of habitability of a terrestrial planet.

Using 3D spectroscopy data from the TYPHOON Project (PI: B. Madore), I show convincing observational evidence that the ISM oxygen abundance traced by HII regions presents systematic azimuthal variations in NGC 1365 and NGC 2997. I discuss a possible physical origin and on-going efforts to explore the prevalence and cause of such variations.
