The unidentified infrared (UIR) bands have been ubiquitously observed in various astrophysical environments and consist of a series of emission features arising from aromatic and/or aliphatic C-C and C-H bonds [1]. Therefore, their carriers are thought to be related to interstellar organics. However, our knowledge on the true carriers of the UIR bands is still limited. Recently [4] has proposed Mixed Aromatic Aliphatic Organic Nanoparticles, which contains hetero atoms in addition to conventional hydrocarbon models, as a more realistic interpretation of the band carriers. The challenges toward identifying the carriers of the UIR bands are still ongoing. Past studies have shown that the UIR bands observed around classical novae, which characterized by the presence of broad feature around 8μm[2], are somewhat different from those observed in other astrophysical environment. Here we report the success of experimentally synthesizing the organics called Nitrogen-included Carbonaceous Compounds (NCC; [7]) whose infrared properties can reproduce the UIR bands observed in classical novae.

We collected radial velocities of more than 50.000 individual stars in 156 Galactic globular clusters (GGC) and matched them with HST photometry and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This allowed us to derive the GGC’s mean proper motions and space velocities. By fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles, combined with new measurements of their internal radially dependent mass functions, we have determined their present-day masses and structural parameters, and for 144 GGCs their internal kinematics. We also derive the initial cluster masses by calculating the cluster orbits backwards in time applying suitable recipes to account for mass-loss and dynamical friction. The new fundamental parameters of GGCs are publicly available via an online database, which will regularly be updated.

Over the last decade, much of the key questions in Galactic Archaeology have been asnwered by studying the Milky Way’s globular cluster (GC) system. Following on this, it has been shown that a substantial fraction of the Milky Way’s stellar halo field arises from GC dissolution. In this work, we make use of the latest data release fromn the APOGEE survey to study GC dissolution ratios in different spatial regions of the Galaxy. Our results will allow us to constrain many astrophysical questions, such as: the origin of N-Rich stars, the mass contribution from GCs to the stellar halo of the Galaxy, the origin of the Galactic GC system and the mass assembly of the Milky Way.

We search for possible differences in rotational frequencies, diameters, albedos, and orbital parameters between Trojans belonging to the L4 and L5 swarms using our own observations and literature data. With increasing number of observational data it becomes evident that the L4 and L5 populations have very similar distributions of most parameters with an exception of orbital inclination distribution.

Low- and intermediate-mass stars experience a phase of carbon enrichment and slow neutron-capture nucleosynthesis (s-process) on the asymptotic giant branch. An interesting element is the radioactive technetium, whose presence is a clear indication that nucleosynthesis happened recently. Analysing the element abundances not only in the hot evolved stars at the center of planetary nebulae helps to derive constraints for the evolution of these stars. Doing so also in their companions if they are in a binary, provides information on the mass-transfer history.

The phase-space correlation of dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy pose a serious challenge to our understanding of structure formation. Recently, another planar structure was discovered around Cen A, the major galaxy of the Centaurus group. We have surveyed this galaxy group for new dwarf galaxies and presented the discovery of 57 new dwarf member candidates. Furthermore, we have studied the kinematics of previously known dwarfs and again found a kinematic coherence in their movement, similar to the Local Group satellites. In CDM simulations, such an alignment appears in less than 0.5 percent.

I study the gas phase metallicity (O/H) radial profiles in a representative sample of 550 nearby star forming galaxies with resolved spectroscopic data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. Using strong-line ratio diagnostics (R23 and O3N2) and referencing to the effective (half-light) radius (Re), I find that the metallicity gradient steepens with stellar mass going from log(M/Mȯ) = 9.0 to log(M/Mȯ) = 10.5. At higher masses a flattening of the metallicity radial profile is observed in the central regions (R < 1Re). These findings are in agreement with recent independent analysis of other large samples of nearby galaxies.

Reproducing the planes of co-orbiting satellites observed in the MW and M31 so far has represented a challenge for cosmological simulations. We have developed a new method to search for kinematically-coherent groups of satellites and applied it to 2 different cosmological hydro-simulations of disc galaxies. In each simulation we have found such a group, that represents roughly half of the total satellite population and is distributed on a fairly thin plane that persists in time. These results are compatible with the MW and M31 observed planes.

AGB stars play a major role in the chemical evolution of the galaxies. It thus is important to establish reliable photometric selection criteria to count them, especially AGB stars at the last stages of AGB evolution like OH/IR stars. Here, we have identified about 1500 OH/IR stars and 500 YSOs with methanol masers, in all major mid– and far–infrared surveys (IRAS, MSX, AKARI, WISE, GLIMPSE, and Hi–Gal). We show that AGB stars with high mass-loss rates cannot be disentagled from YSOs with only mid–infrared photometry; far–infrared photometry is essential. In the region observed by GLIMPSE, we show that the proportion of AGB stars has been severely underestimated in previous works: about 70% of “intrinsically” red objects in GLIMPSE are AGB stars rather than YSOs.

The article discusses the physical conditions in the early Solar system and on Earth, determining the origin, selection and development of the first living systems. The role of the young Sun dynamics, cosmic rays, magnetic fields and other protective shells of the Earth in the formation of the biosphere is emphasized. The selection of a single genetic code, ancient methods of long-term storage of energy and adaptive technologies of the first living systems occurred under the influence of cosmological and geophysical factors. A hypothesis was suggested that the accumulation of energy in polyphosphates without the participation of solar radiation could have ensured the survival of the primary biosphere in the conditions of the low luminosity of the young Sun.

beans is a tool for distributed data analysis. It provides web and command line interface for data analysis and plotting for huge datasets. beans is written in a general form and can be used in any field of research to analyze the data. The main purpose of beans is to provide to the community a versatile tool to store, analyze and then visualize any amount of scientific data (e.g. numerical simulation, observations).

We present dark-matter minihalo models for the Ultra-Compact High Velocity HI Clouds (UCHVCs) recently discovered in the 21 cm ALFALFA survey. We assume gravitational confinement of ~104 K HI gas by flat-cored dark-matter subhalos within the Local Group. For the UCHVCs we calculate the photoionization-limited hydrostatic gas profiles for any distance-dependent total observed HI mass and predict the associated (projected) HI half-mass radii. The observed 21 cm fluxes and half-mass angular radii then constrain the source distances or DM halo parameters. As a consistency check we model the gas-rich dwarf galaxy Leo T, for which the distance is known (420 kpc) and there is a well-resolved HI column density profile. We derive an upper limit for the pressure of any enveloping hot IGM gas at the distance of Leo T. Our analysis supports the scenario that some of the UCHVCs may constitute a population of 21-cm-selected but optically-faint dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume.

Thanks especially to the ALMA interferometer, there are several new detections of CO gas in debris disks. Based on our own and archival ALMA observations, we found that the presence of CO gas in dust-rich debris disks around young (10–50 Myr) A-type stars is common. Interestingly, similarly dust-rich debris disks around young F-K type stars exhibit significantly lower gas incidence. The main difference between the two subsamples is related to a special population of gaseous debris disks whose total CO gas quantity is comparable to that of the less massive Herbig Ae disks. The origin of gas in these CO-rich debris systems is not fully clarified yet.

We have performed photometric analysis of four Galactic globular clusters (GGCs): NGC 4147, NGC 4590, NGC 5053 and NGC 7492 using far-UV and near-UV filters of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board AstroSat. With the help of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified ~150 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), and ~40 blue straggler stars (BSS) in the four GGCs. We study the temperature and radial distribution of BHBs and BSS for the four GGCs.

Far-infrared photometric observations from the Herschel Space Observatory offer the opportunity to study the dust-to-gas ratio at a resolved scale in nearby galaxies. The amount, and gradient, of solid-phase metals can thus be compared with metallicity measurements in the gas phase. We describe our preliminary work on the topic with data from the DustPedia project.

Recent advances in high-angular resolution instruments (VLT and VLTI, ALMA) have enabled us to delve deep into the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars from the optical to the sub-mm wavelengths, thus allowing us to study in detail the gas and dust formation zones (e.g., their geometry, chemistry and kinematics). This work focuses on four (4) C-rich AGB stars observed with a high-angular resolution technique in the near-infrared: a multi-wavelength tomographic study of the dusty layers of the circumstellar envelopes of these C-rich stars, i.e. the variations in the morphology and temperature distribution.

Radial metallicity gradients measured today in the interstellar medium (ISM) and stellar components of disk galaxies are the result of chemo-dynamical evolution since the beginning of disk formation. This makes it difficult to infer the disk past without knowledge of the ISM metallicity gradient evolution with cosmic time. We show that abundance gradients are meaningful only if stellar age information is available. The observed gradient inversion with distance from the disk mid-plane seen in the Milky Way can be explained as the effect of inside-out disk formation and disk flaring of mono-age populations. A novel recent method is presented for constraining the evolution of the Galactic ISM metallicity with radius and time directly from the observations, while at the same time recovering the birth radii of any stellar sample with precise metallicity and age measurements.

A growing number of studies are revealing that many Milky Way globular clusters possess extended stellar structures beyond their traditional boundaries. Just how ubiquitous these structures are, and how they originate, are key questions to explore. In this contribution, we present a Bayesian technique that we have developed to separate probable members of globular clusters from the dominant Milky Way fore/background at large clustercentric radii and hence facilitate quantitative analyses of these intriguing structures. We demonstrate the promise of our method by showing how it recovers the known extended features around Palomar 5 and NGC 7089.
