Recent studies have revealed the existence of a significant population of Ap stars with extremely long rotation periods, and the frequent occurrence of Ap stars in wide binaries. Those results represent new constraints on the understanding of the origin and evolution of Ap stars, and (by extension) of all upper-main-sequence stars. Current knowledge of Ap stars with the longest rotation and orbital periods remains incomplete, on the one hand because in many cases the periods of interest are longer than the time-spans over which relevant observations have been obtained, and on the other hand because some important subsets of Ap stars have been omitted from the studies that have been carried out until now. Additional observations over time-scales of decades to centuries are needed to complement the current incomplete picture. Securing them with the required accuracy and time coverage, and ensuring that their full exploitation will ultimately be possible, represents a unique challenge in time-domain astronomy.

Galaxy clusters are excellent targets for high energy astrophysics with gamma rays. Not only they may host active galaxies, but they are often expected to provide signatures of accelerations of electrons and protons to PeV energies. Furthermore, according to ΛCDM scenario, they should be embedded in an extremely massive dark matter halo, the largest halo expected. In this report, we summarize the recently published MAGIC lower limits on the decaying dark matter lifetime using 202 h of selected high quality data taken on the Perseus galaxy cluster, in a 5-year long campaign.

A major uncertainty in the determination of the mass profile of the Milky Way using stellar kinematics in the halo is the poorly determined anisotropy parameter, , where σr is the Galactocentric radial velocity dispersion, and σθ and σφ are the tangential components of the velocity dispersion. We have used a sample of over 24,000 Galactic halo K giant and blue horizontal branch stars from the LAMOST stellar spectroscopic survey and SDSS/SEGUE, combined with proper motions from Gaia Data Release 2, to measure β(rgc) over a wide range of Galactocentric distances rgc from 5 to 80 kpc. Kinematic substructures have been carefully removed to reveal the underlying diffuse stellar halo prior to measuring β. We find that orbits are generally radial (β > 0) and β is constant out to distances of about 40 kpc, with a dependence on metallicity of the stars, such that β declines with lower metallicity. Similar behavior is seen in both the K giant and BHB samples.

A recently discovered young, high-velocity giant star J01020100-7122208 is a good candidate of hypervelocity star ejected from the Galactic center, although it has a bound orbit. If we assume that this star was ejected from the Galactic center, it can be used to constrain the Galactic potential, because the deviation of its orbit from a purely radial orbit informs us of the torque that this star has received. Based on this assumption, we estimate the flattening of the Galactic dark matter halo by using the Gaia DR2 data and the circular velocity data. Our Bayesian analysis shows that the orbit of J01020100-7122208 favors a prolate halo within ~ 10 kpc from the Galactic center. The posterior distribution of the density flattening q shows a broad distribution at q ≳ 1 and peaks at q ≃ 1.5. Also, 98.5% of the posterior distribution is located at q > 1, highly disfavoring an oblate halo.

Increasingly better observations of resolved protoplanetary disks show a wide range of conditions in which planets can be formed. Many transitional disks show gaps in their radial density structure, which are usually interpreted as signatures of planets. It has also been suggested that observed inhomogeneities in transitional disks are indicative of dust traps which may help the process of planet formation. However, it is yet to be seen if the configuration of fully evolved exoplanetary systems can yield information about the later stages of their primordial disks. We use synthetic exoplanet population data from Monte Carlo simulations of systems forming under different density perturbation conditions, which are based on current observations of transitional disks. The simulations use a core instability, oligarchic growth, dust trap analytical model that has been benchmarked against exoplanetary populations.

The supergiant high-mass X-ray binary IGR J16318-4848 was detected by INTEGRAL in 2003 and distinguishes itself by its high intrinsic absorption and B[e] phenomenon. It is the perfect candidate to study both binary interaction and the environment of supergiant B[e] stars. We report on VLT/X-Shooter observations from July 2012 in both optical and near-infrared, which provide unprecedented wide-range, well-resolved spectra of IGR J16318-4848 from 0.5 to 2.5 μm. Adding VLT/VISIR and Herschel data, the spectral energy distribution fitting allows us to further constrain the contribution of each emission region (central star, irradiated rim, dusty disc). We derive geometrical parameters using the numerous emitting and absorbing elements in each different sites in the binary. Various line shapes are detected, such as P-Cygni profiles and flat-topped lines, which are the signature of outflowing material. Preliminary results confirm the edge-on line of sight and the equatorial configuration of expanding material, along with the detection of a potentially very collimated polar outflow. These are evidence that the extreme environment of IGR J16318-4848 is ideal to have a better grasp of highly obscured high-mass X-ray binaries.

We have identified that radio jets are commonly associated with “radiative mode” feedback in quasars. By performing a systematic multi-wavelength study of z < 0.2 quasars, we have found that 70–80% of our sample of ‘radio-quiet’ type 2 quasars, which host kpc-scale ionized gas outflows, exhibit radio jet structures. Here, we discuss our results on the pilot sample of 10 objects that combine high resolution (∼ 0.25 - 1 arcsec) radio imaging at 1-7 GHz with optical IFU observations. Our results demonstrate that it is extremely common for jets to be spatially and kinematically linked to kpc-scale ionized gas kinematics in such quasars. Therefore, radio jets may be an important driver of outflows during ‘radiative mode’ feedback, apparently blurring the lines between the traditional divisions of feedback modes.

The period variations of rotating, pulsating and eclipsing variable stars bear valuable astrophysical information about the presence of companions, evolutionary effects, and the inner structure of the stars. This talk described a universal method for de-trending and re-scaling precise photometric data (Kepler, MOST, CoRoT, OGLE, …) appropriate for period-change diagnostics of periodic variables. We demonstrated the potential of the method by analysing the period variability of one of the newly-identified Kepler magnetic chemically-peculiar (mCP) stars. We showed that, surprisingly, our target star displays near-sinusoidal changes in its observed light-variations, with a period of 2.85(6) years, which is apparently the result of the presence of a nearby stellar companion. The expected long-term changes of the rotational period, as have been observed in several mCP stars, have not been identified among the sample of Kepler mCP stars.

Orbital resonances in the Galactic halo have been studied using the Galactic mass model of Pichardo et al. (2003, 2004), including a Galactic bar. For the two moving groups of the Galactic halo, G18-39 and G21-22 (Silva et al. 2012), the majority of stars in both groups appear trapped in two resonances over the Galactic plane, generated by the bar. We have taken the rotation speed of the bar, Ωb, as 45-55 km s-1 kpc-1. So, these two moving groups are part of stellar supergroups which populate these two resonances. The position of these two groups in the Bottlinger diagram can be explained by the mean (U,V) field generated by these two resonances crossing the solar vicinity, in contrast with the alternate explanation of Silva et al. (2012), based on the simulations of Meza et al. (2005), that these two groups, seen as two peaks in the U Galactic velocity, have been created by the accretion of a dwarf galaxy by the Milky Way, such as that of Ω Centauri.

For the first time, we report the identification of NUV bright red clump (RC) stars and the extension of RC stars over two magnitudes both in color and magnitude axis in NUV vs (NUV – optical) color magnitude diagram. We find that the extension of RC is not due to photometric uncertainties. We suggest that the extension could be an effect of field star contamination. We also suggest that if it is an intrinsic property of the cluster then age and/or metallicity spread within the cluster could be the possible reasons for extended RC.

We present the results of a study of the AGN density in a homogeneous and well studied sample of 167 bona-fide X-ray galaxy clusters (0.1<z<0.5). Our aim is to study the AGN activity in 167 XXL X-ray galaxy clusters as a function of the cluster mass and the location of the AGN in the cluster. We report a significant AGN excess in our low-mass cluster sub-sample between 0.5r500 and 2r500. In contrast, the high-mass sub-sample presents no AGN excess. The AGN excess in poor clusters indicates AGN triggering, supporting previous studies that reported enhanced galaxy merging in the cluster outskirts. This effect is probably prevented by high velocity dispersions in high-mass clusters. Comparing also with previous studies of massive or high-redshift clusters, we conclude that the AGN fraction in cluster galaxies anti-correlates strongly with cluster mass.

Stars with masses between ∼0.7 and 8 M⊙ end their lives as Planetary Nebulae (PNe). With the MegaCam at CFHT, we have carried out a survey of the central 16 sq. degrees of Andromeda (M31) reaching the outer disk and halo, using a narrow-band [OIII]5007 and a broad-band g filter. This survey extends previous PN samples both in uniform area coverage and depth. We identify ∼4000 PNe in M31, of which ∼3000 are new discoveries. We detect PNe down to ∼6 mag below the bright cut-off of the PN luminosity function (PNLF), ∼2 mag deeper than in previous works. We detect a steep rise in the number of PNe at ∼4.5 mag fainter than the bright cut-off. It persists as we go radially outwards and is steeper than that seen in the Magellanic clouds. We explore possible reasons for this rise, which give insights into the stellar population of M31.

We have studied young stellar populations and star clusters in the dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A using multicolor (B, V, R, I, Hα) photometry data obtained with the Subaru Suprime-Cam and two-color photometry results measured on archival HST/ACS F475W & F814W frames. The analysis of the main sequence (MS) and blue supergiant (BSG – “blue loop”) stars enabled us to study the star formation history in the Leo A galaxy during the last ~200 Myr. Also, we have discovered 5 low-mass (≲ 400 M⊙) star clusters within the ACS field. This finding, taking into account a low metallicity environment and a yet-undetected molecular gas in Leo A, constrains star formation efficiency estimates and scenarios. Inside the well known “hole” in the H i column density map (Hunter et al. 2012) we found a shock front (prominent in Hα), implying an unseen progenitor and reminding the “hole” problems widely discussed by Warren et al. (2011).

Radio jets can play multiple roles in the feedback loop by regulating the accretion of the gas, by enhancing gas turbulence, and by driving gas outflows. Numerical simulations are beginning to make detailed predictions about these processes. Using high resolution VLBI observations we test these predictions by studying how radio jets of different power and in different phases of evolution affect the properties and kinematics of the surrounding H I gas. Consistent with predictions, we find that young (or recently restarted) radio jets have stronger impact as shown by the presence of H I outflows. The outflowing medium is clumpy with clouds of with sizes up to a few tens of pc and mass ∼ 104Mȯ) already in the region close to the nucleus (< 100 pc), making the jet interact strongly and shock the surrounding gas. We present a case of a low-power jet where, as suggested by the simulations, the injection of energy may produce an increase in the turbulence of the medium instead of an outflow.

Radio-mode feedback from relativistic jets is one of the prominent heating mechanisms in clusters of galaxies. We present a long-term evolution of high-resolution MHD simulation of jets interacting with an environment modeled to represent the Perseus cluster. We investigate the thermodynamics of the ICM due to the gas motion triggered by the action of the jets and show that low-entropy gas is lifted efficiently in the wake of the inflating radio lobe. We look into the uplift mechanism and estimate the energy budget and the rate of thermal conduction. The redistribution of entropy suggests that heat conduction can play a more significant role in the thermal evolution of the cluster core in the presence of jets, which act effectively as a heat pump, thus heating the ICM more efficiently than jets would by themselves in an isentropic cluster.

We derive mean proper motions of 15 known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs) from the Gaia DR2 data sets. When these mean proper motions are gathered with existent radial velocities to compose the GCs’ velocity vectors, we found that the projection of the velocity vectors onto the LMC plane and those perpendicular to it tell us about two distinct kinematical GC populations. Such a distinction becomes clear if the GCs are split at a perpendicular velocity of 10 km/s (absolute value). The two different kinematics groups also exhibit different spatial distributions. Those with smaller vertical velocities are part of the LMC disk, while those with larger values are closely distributed like a spheroidal component. Since GCs in both kinematic-structural components share similar ages and metallicities, we speculate with the possibility that their origins could have occurred through a fast collapse that formed halo and disk concurrently.

Binary interactions can alter the intrinsic properties of stars (such as: pulsation, mass-loss, photospheric chemistry, dust-formation, circumstellar envelope morphology etc.) and can even play a dominant role in determining its ultimate fate. While past studies have shown that binarity can end the AGB life of a star, recent studies have revealed that in specific cases binarity also pre-maturely terminate the RGB evolution. A characteristic feature of evolved binaries is the presence of a Keplerian circumbinary disc of gas and dust which plays a lead role in the evolution of the systems. In this article, I will review our advances in the research landscape of post-RGB and post-AGB binary stars, focussing on their observational properties, spectral energy distribution, photospheric chemistry, the evolution of their stable circumbinary discs, and the evolutionary connection between the enigmatic post-AGB/post-RGB binaries, and other systems whose primary component is a white dwarf.

The origin of the planets atmosphere is a profound question of comparative planetology. There are two competing models, i.e. outgassing from the interior or late delivery from comets or volatiles-rich asteroids after most of the planet has been formed, of which the former is currently preferred. Meteorite compositions as well as radial mixing during accretion derived from accretion models suggest that the building blocks of the terrestrial planets contained some volatiles. Processes like dehydration by hydrous melting, oxidation, impact devolatilization, and in particular degassing during magma ocean solidification will then lead to a significant volatile loss of the interior and to the formation of a dense atmosphere during the early stages of planetary evolution. These processes are also responsible for the oxidation state of this early atmosphere, i.e. whether it was more reduced or oxidized. Although this early volatile loss was very efficient, the interior probably retained some water. This was distributed in the subsequent evolution between interior and atmosphere, as well as on the surface as liquid water in case of favorable temperature and pressure conditions. The main processes responsible for the water distribution are volcanic outgassing driven by partial melting of the silicate mantle and formation of the crust and recycling of water-rich crustal material. Here, an important difference between the terrestrial planets is the tectonic style prevailing on the planet. For the Earth with its plate tectonics, recycling of water is very efficient and can even balance the outgassing. For terrestrial planets in the stagnant lid regime of mantle convection such as Mars, the exchange of water between the interior and the surface/atmosphere is mainly in one direction and results in a continuous depletion of the interior. In this talk, I will briefly review our current knowledge on these interactions between interior and atmosphere and on the problem we are facing to better understand the influence of the interior on the habitability of a planet.

. High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) have been revealed by a wealth of multi-wavelength observations, from X-ray to optical and infrared domain. After describing the 3 different kinds of HMXB, we focus on 3 HMXB hosting supergiant stars: IGR J16320-4751, IGR J16465-4507 and IGR J16318-4848, respectively called “The Good”, “The Bad” and “The Ugly”. We review in these proceedings what the observations of these sources have brought to light concerning our knowledge of HMXB, and what part still remains in the dark side. Many questions are still pending, related to accretion processes, stellar wind properties in these massive and active stars, and the overall evolution due to transfer of mass and angular momentum between the companion star and the compact object. Future observations should be able to answer these questions, which constitute the dark side of HMXB.

Dynamical models will be key to exploitation of the incoming flood data for our Galaxy. Modelling techniques are reviewed with an emphasis on f(J) modelling.
