The IAU/IAG Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates & Rotational Elements published its (2006) triennial report containing current recommendations for models for solar system bodies (Seidelmann et al. 2007). P. Kenneth Seidelmann stepped down as chairperson and B. A. Archinal was elected chairperson at the Working Group business meeting that took place at the IAU XXVI General Assembly in Prague in 2006.

According to semiempirical models, photoabsorption by fullerenes (single and multishell) could explain the shape, width and peak energy of the most prominent feature of the interstellar absorption, the UV bump at 2175 Å. Other weaker transitions are predicted in the optical and near-infrared providing a potential explanation for diffuse interstellar bands. In particular, we find that several fullerenes could contribute to the well known strong DIB at 4430 Å. Comparing cross sections and available data for this DIB and the UV bump we estimate a density of fullerenes in the diffuse interstellar medium of 0.1–0.2 ppm. These molecules could then be a major reservoir for interstellar carbon. We also study the rotation rates and electric dipole emission of hydrogenated icosahedral fullerenes. We investigate these molecules as potential carriers of the anomalous (dust-correlated) microwave emission recently detected by several cosmic microwave background experiments.

We used the red clump stars from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE II) survey and the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey (MCPS), to estimate the line-of-sight depth. The observed dispersion in the magnitude and colour distribution of red clump stars is used to estimate the line-of-sight depth, after correcting for the contribution due to other effects. This dispersion due to depth, has a range from minimum dispersion that can be estimated, to 0.46 mag (a depth of 500 pc to 10.44 kpc), in the LMC. In the case of the SMC, the dispersion ranges from minimum dispersion to 0.35 magnitude (a depth of 665 pc to 9.53 kpc). The thickness profile of the LMC bar indicates that it is flared. The average depth in the bar region is 4.0 ± 1.4 kpc. The halo of the LMC (using RR Lyrae stars) is found to have larger depth compared to the disk/bar, which supports the presence of an inner halo for the LMC. The large depth estimated for the LMC bar and the disk suggests that the LMC might have had minor mergers. In the case of the SMC, the bar depth (4.90 ± 1.23 kpc) and the disk depth (4.23 ± 1.48 kpc) are found to be within the standard deviations. We find evidence for an increase in depth near the optical center (up to 9 kpc). On the other hand, the estimated depth for the halo (RR Lyrae stars) and disk (RC stars) for the bar region of the SMC is found to be similar. Thus, increased depth and enhanced stellar as well as H i density near the optical center suggests that the SMC may have a bulge.

The observations of 3 and 5 minute oscillations in sunspots present information on propagation of MHD waves in the magnetic tubes of sunspots. We present a comparison of wavelet spectra of radio flux oscillations at λ = 1.76 cm and oscillations of longitudinal component of the velocity at the chromosphere in sunspot umbra and penumbra in AR 10661 (2004, Aug 18). The radio maps of the Sun obtained with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph were used. The spatial resolution of the radio data was about 10-15 arcsec, and 10 sec cadence was used. On the radio maps sunspot-associated sources were identified and time profiles of their maximum brightness temperatures for each radio source were calculated. Radio data consists of information of oscillations of plasma parameters (in the regions with magnetic field B = 2000 G) at the level of the chromosphere-corona transition region. The optical observations were carried out at Sayan observatory. These data included information on longitude component of the magnetic field at the photosphere (line Fe I 6569 Å) and longitudinal component of the velocity at the chromosphere (line Hα was used). Comparing the wavelet diagrams covering the same periods of observations at radio and optics showed that some wave trains of time profiles are very similar in both kinds of observations (similar oscillation frequencies and their drifts, variations of amplitudes), however, some significant differences were also registered. The best similarity in optical and radio oscillations was found when the active region (AR) was near the center of the solar disk. The phase shifts between the two kinds of observations reflecting the propagation of MHD waves were also analyzed.

The Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS) is a project to map the diffuse polarized emission over the entire sky, Northern and Southern hemispheres, from 300 MHz to 1.8 GHz. With an angular resolution of 30–60 arcmin and a frequency resolution of 1 MHz or better, GMIMS will provide the first spectro-polarimetric data set of the large-scale polarized emission over the entire sky, observed with single-dish telescopes. GMIMS will provide an invaluable resource for studies of the magneto-ionic medium of the Galaxy in the local disk, halo, and its transition.

We present three new methods for determining the age of groups of pre-main-sequence stars. The first, creating empirical isochrones allows us to create a robust age ordering, but not to derive actual ages. The second, using the width of the gap in colour-magnitude space between the pre-main-sequence and main-sequence (the radiative convective gap) has promise as a distance and extinction independent measure of age, but is as yet uncalibrated. Finally we discuss τ2 fitting of the main sequence as the stars approach the terminus of the main sequence. This method suggests that there is a factor two difference between these “nuclear” ages, and more conventional pre-main-sequence contraction ages.

Disk galaxies are common in our universe and this is a source of concern for hierarchical formation models like ΛCDM. Here we investigate this issue as motivated by raw merger statistics derived for galaxy-size dark matter halos from ΛCDM simulations. Our analysis shows that a majority (~ 70%) of galaxy halos with M0 = 1012M⊙ at z = 0 should have accreted at least one object with mass m > 1011M⊙ ≃ 3 Mdisk over the last 10 Gyr. Mergers involving larger objects m ≳ 3 × 1011M⊙ should have been very rare for Milky-Way size halos today, and this pinpoints m/M ~ 0.1 mass-ratio mergers as the most worrying ones for the survival of thin galactic disks. Motivated by these results, we use use high-resolution, dissipationless N-body simulations to study the response of stellar Milky-Way type disks to these common mergers and show that thin disks do not survive the bombardment. The remnant galaxies are roughly three times as thick and twice as kinematically hot as the observed thin disk of the Milky Way. Finally, we evaluate the suggestion that disks may be preserved if the mergers involve gas-rich progenitors. Using empirical measures to assign stellar masses and gas masses to dark matter halos as a function of redshift, we show that the vast majority of large mergers experienced by 1012M⊙ halos should be gas-rich (fgas > 0.5), suggesting that this is a potentially viable solution to the disk formation conundrum. Moreover, gas-rich mergers should become increasingly rare in more massive halos > 1012.5M⊙, and this suggest that merger gas fractions may play an important role in establishing morphological trends with galaxy luminosity.

With more than 80 transits observed in the CoRoT lightcurve with a cadence of 32 s, CoRoT-Exo-2b provides an excellent case to search for the secondary eclipse of the planet, with an expected signal of less than 10−4 in relative flux. The activity of the star causes a modulation on the flux that makes the detection of this signal challenging. We describe the technique used to seek for the secondary eclipse, that leads to a tentative 2.5σ detection of a 5.5×10−5 eclipse. If the effect of the spots are not taken into account, the times of transit centers will also be affected. They could lead to an erroneous detection of periodic transit timing variations of ~20 s and with a 7.45 d period. By measuring the transit central times at different depths of the transit (transit bisectors), we show that there are no such periodic variations in the CoRoT-Exo-2b O-C residuals larger than ~10 s.

Radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of surface convection in low-mass stars can be exploited to derive estimates of i) the efficiency of the convective energy transport in the stellar surface layers; ii) the convection-related photometric micro-variability. We comment on the universality of the mixing-length parameter, and point out potential pitfalls in the process of its calibration which may be in part responsible for the contradictory findings about its variability across the Hertzsprung-Russell digramme. We further comment on the modelling of the photometric micro-variability in HD 49933 – one of the first main COROT targets.

I review the present understanding of the process by which the universe has been enriched in the course of its history with heavy elements produced by stars and transported into the surrounding intergalactic medium. This process goes under the name of “cosmic metal enrichment” and presents some of the most challenging puzzles in present day physical cosmology. These are reviewed along with some proposed explanations that all together form a coherent working scenario.

More than 50 years have elapsed since the first studies of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The wealth of data accumulated since then has not only revealed a large cluster system, but also a diversified one, filling loci in the age, mass and chemical abundance parameter space which are complementary to Galactic clusters. Catalogs and photometric samples currently available cover most of the cluster mass range. The expectations of relatively long cluster disruption timescales in the Clouds have been confirmed, allowing reliable assessments of the cluster initial mass function and of the cluster formation rate in the Clouds. Due to their proximity to the Galaxy, Magellanic clusters are also well resolved into stars. Analysis of colour—magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of clusters with different ages, masses and metallicities are useful tools to test dynamical effects such as mass loss due to stellar evolution, two-body relaxation, stellar evaporation, cluster interactions and tidal effects. The existence of massive and young Magellanic clusters has provided insight into the physics of cluster formation. The magnitudes and colours of different stellar types are confronted with stellar evolutionary tracks, thus constraining processes such as convective overshooting, stellar mass-loss, rotation and pre main-sequence evolution. Finally, the Magellanic cluster system may contribute with nearby and well studied counterparts of recently proposed types of extragalactic clusters, such as Faint Fuzzies and Diffuse Star Clusters.

The magnetic field pervading our Galaxy is a crucial constituent of the interstellar medium: it mediates the dynamics of interstellar clouds, the energy density of cosmic rays, and the formation of stars (Beck 2005). The field associated with ionized interstellar gas has been determined through observations of pulsars in our Galaxy. Radio-frequency measurements of pulse dispersion and the rotation of the plane of linear polarization, i.e., Faraday rotation, yield an average value B ≈ 3 μG (Han et al. 2006). The possible detection of Faraday rotation of linearly polarized photons emitted by high-redshift quasars (Kronberg et al. 2008) suggests similar magnetic fields are present in foreground galaxies with redshifts z > 1. As Faraday rotation alone, however, determines neither the magnitude nor the redshift of the magnetic field, the strength of galactic magnetic fields at redshifts z > 0 remains uncertain.

Here we report a measurement of a magnetic field of B ≈ 84 μG in a galaxy at z =0.692, using the same Zeeman-splitting technique that revealed an average value of B = 6 μG in the neutral interstellar gas of our Galaxy (Heiles et al. 2004). This is unexpected, as the leading theory of magnetic field generation, the mean-field dynamo model, predicts large-scale magnetic fields to be weaker in the past, rather than stronger (Parker 1970).

Observations of circumstellar disks around stars as a function of stellar properties such as mass, metallicity, multiplicity, and age, provide constraints on theories concerning the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Utilizing ground- and space-based data from the far–UV to the millimeter, astronomers can assess the amount, composition, and location of circumstellar gas and dust as a function of time. We review primarily results from the Spitzer Space Telescope, with reference to other ground- and space-based observations. Comparing these results with those from exoplanet search techniques, theoretical models, as well as the inferred history of our solar system, helps us to assess whether planetary systems like our own, and the potential for life that they represent, are common or rare in the Milky Way galaxy.

We examine mass–metallicity relations for nearby (D < 2 Mpc) gas-rich and gas-poor dwarf galaxies. We derived stellar and baryonic masses using photometric data and used average stellar iron abundances as the metallicity indicator. With the inclusion of available data for massive galaxies, we find a continuous mass–metallicity relation for galaxies spanning nine orders of magnitude in mass, and that the mass–metallicity relations are the same for both gas-rich and gas-poor dwarf galaxies. We derive stellar effective yields from the stellar abundances, finding that gas-poor dwarf galaxies form a single sequence with mass, whereas gas-rich dwarf galaxies have higher yields at comparable mass. Simple chemical evolution models show that a mass-dependent star-formation efficiency can simultaneously account for the correlations between metallicity, gas fraction, and stellar effective yield with mass. In agreement with recent and independent results, we conclude that a key driver of the mass-metallicity relation is the variation of star-formation efficiency with galaxy mass, modulated by galaxy mass-dependent outflows and/or stellar IMF variations, and coupled with environmental gas-removal processes.

By observing the transits of exoplanets, one may determine many fundamental system parameters. I review current techniques and results for the parameters that can be measured with the greatest precision, specifically, the transit times, the planetary mass and radius, and the projected spin-orbit angle.

The main goal of the Working Group was to gather astrometric observations made during the triennum as well as old observations not yet published in the data base. The WG encouraged the making of new observations. A Spring School was organized in China in order to teach the observational techniques of natural satellites to students and young astronomers. New theoretical models of the motion of the satellites and fit of the current models to new observations were used in order to make ephemerides of all the planetary satellites with tools useful for observations such as configurations. These ephemerides named MULTISAT are available at <www.imcce.fr/sat> or at <lnfm1.sai.msu.ru/neb/nss/nssephme.htm>.

We know that the galactic magnetic field possesses a random component in addition to the mean uniform component, with comparable strength of the two components. This random component is considered to play important roles in the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work we present numerical simulations associated with the interaction of the supersonic flows located at high latitude in our Galaxy (High Velocity Clouds, HVC) with the magnetized galactic ISM in order to study the effect that produces a random magnetic field in the evolution of this objects.

In this work, we will show that a proper definition of the boundary of a convective zone should be the place where the convective energy flux (i.e. the correlation of turbulent velocity and temperature) changes its sign. Therefore, it is convectively unstable region when the flux is positive, and it is convective overshooting zone when the flux becomes negative. In our nonlocal convection theory, convection is already sub-adiabatic (∇ < ∇ad) far before reaching the unstable boundary; while in the overshooting zone below the convective zone, convection is sub-adiabatic and super-radiative (∇rad < ∇ < ∇ad). The transition between the adiabatic temperature gradient and the radiative one is continuous and smooth instead of a sudden switch. In the unstable zone, the temperature gradient is approaching radiative rather than going to adiabatic. The distance of convective overshooting is different for different physical quantities. The overshooting distance in the context of stellar evolution, measured by the extent of mixing of stellar matter, should be more extended than that of other physical quantities. It is estimated as large as 0.25–1.7 Hp depending on the evolutionary timescale.

The Photometric-Magnetic Dynamical model handles the evolution of an individual sunspot as an autonomous nonlinear, though integrable, dynamical system. The model considers the simultaneous interplay of two different interacted factors: The photometric and magnetic factors, respectively, characterizing the evolution of the sunspot visible area A on the photosphere, and the simultaneous evolution of the sunspot magnetic field strength B. All the possible sunspots are gathered in a specific region of the phase space (A, B). The separatrix of this phase space region determines the upper limit of the values of sunspot area and magnetic strength. Consequently, an upper limit of the magnetic flux in an active region is also determined, found to be ≈7.23 × 1023 Mx. This value is phenomenologically equal to the magnetic flux concentrated in the totality of the granules of the quite Sun. Hence, the magnetic flux concentrated in an active region cannot exceed the one concentrated in the whole photosphere.

The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) will be more sensitive for ultraviolet spectroscopy than either the GHRS or the STIS, especially in the far UV where many absorption lines and bands formed by atoms and molecules have electronic transitions from the ground state. Here we outline our plans for using the COS to observe interstellar gas and dust in the cold ISM, along with a report on the results of preliminary archival HST search for UV diffuse interstellar bands.
