We report on two off-limb radio sources of microwave emission which were detected in one-dimensional RATAN-600 solar scans of the post-eruptive loops: on December 2, 2003 (off west limb) and January 25, 2007 (east limb). The microwave spectra showed that the thermal emission was predominant at the early stage of the arcade formation with a small contribution of non-thermal emission. There were no high-energy particles in these events. The microwave spectra of the radio sources associated with the tops of postflare loops show the predominant thermal emission during one hour after the eruption. In case of a small contribution from accelerated particles to the microwave emission, there is a large amount of hot plasma in the region of the loop tops after the eruption.

In this short note, we raise the issue how magnetic braking of prestellar and protostellar condensations depends on the metallicity of the molecular gas cloud. We suggest that the degree of ionization, which determines the timescale for redistribution of magnetic flux (ambipolar diffusion) in the dense cloud core, depends linearly on the heavy element and dust abundance of the gas. This implies that magnetic braking is less efficient in metal-poor condensations, and hence more of the angular momentum problem of star formation must be solved by other means, such as fragmentation into (wider) binary systems. Observations of orbital periods (separations) of binary systems among the metal-poor Galactic halo stars could test this prediction.

We present a review of the latest work concerned with the relative and absolute ages of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs). Relative age-dating techniques generally divide into two types - those that measure a magnitude difference between two features in the color-magnitude diagram (i.e. Vertical Methods) and those that rely on color differences in the color-magnitude diagram (i.e. Horizontal Methods). Both types of diagnostics have been successfully applied and generally reach the same conclusions. Galactic GCs exhibit a mean age range of ~3 Gyr, smaller (or nonexistent) for metal-poor clusters and larger (as much as 6 Gyr) for metal-rich ones. Generally speaking, the inner-halo GCs are older and more uniform in age as compared with those outside of the solar circle. Furthermore, the tendency of GCs with predominantly red horizontal branches (HBs) located in the outer halo to be preferentially younger than those with bluer HBs closer to the Galactic center suggests that age is the second parameter which, in addition to metal abundance, controls the HB morphology. In particular, we present additional compelling evidence supporting this assertion using a detailed examination of new photometry for the classic second-parameter cluster pair NGC 288 and NGC 362. Moving on to the absolute ages, we note that the absolute ages of the most metal-poor Galactic GCs sets a lower limit on the age of the Universe. The preferred age indicator for absolute ages is the luminosity of the main-sequence turnoff because most theoretical models agree on the onset of hydrogen exhaustion in the cores of low-mass stars. Based on the technique of main-sequence fitting to field subdwarfs with Hipparcos parallaxes, we find an age of 11.6+1.4−1.1 Gyr for four metal-poor GCs with deep color-magnitude diagrams on a consistent photometric scale; this age is consistent with the results of a number of previous investigations.

Commission 22 is part of Division III on Planetary System Sciences of the International Astronomical Union. Members of Commission 22 are professional scientists studying bodies in the Solar System smaller than asteroids and comets, and their interactions with planets. The main subjects of interest are meteors, meteoroids, meteoroid streams, interplanetary dust particles, and also zodiacal cloud, meteor trains, meteorites, tektites, etc.

Observations using the Spitzer Space Telescope provided the first detections of photons from extrasolar planets. Spitzer observations are allowing us to infer the temperature structure, composition, and dynamics of exoplanet atmospheres. The Spitzer studies extend from many hot Jupiters to the hot Neptune orbiting GJ436. Here I review the current status of Spitzer secondary eclipse observations, and summarize the results from the viewpoint of what is robust, what needs more work, and what the observations are telling us about the physical nature of exoplanet atmospheres.

From the two-fluid plasma theory, we derived a kind of current in differentially moved plasma. The current is from the different viscosities between electrons and ions. The higher temperature and lighter mass of the electrons make the viscosity of electrons much stronger than ions. In this way, the electrons will have smaller velocity than ions in the differentially moved layer and contribute a net current in the plasma. The value of the current depends on the temperature and density of electrons in the plasma and the differential velocity ∇2v.

We examine the bar instability in models with an exponential disk and a cuspy NFW-like dark matter (DM) halo inspired by cosmological simulations. Bar evolution is studied as a function of numerical resolution in a sequence of models spanning 104 – 108 DM particles - including a multi-mass model with an effective resolution of 1010. The goal is to find convergence in dynamical behaviour. We characterize the bar growth, the buckling instability, pattern speed decay through resonant transfer of angular momentum, and possible destruction of the DM halo cusp. Overall, most characteristics converge in behaviour for halos containing more than 107 particles in detail. Notably, the formation of the bar does not destroy the density cusp in this case. These higher resolution simulations clearly illustrate the importance of discrete resonances in transporting angular momentum from the bar to the halo.

Because of its proximity, the Small Magellanic Cloud provides a unique opportunity to map the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) in a low-metallicity (12 + log(O/H) ~ 8) galaxy at high spatial resolution in order to learn about their abundance and physical state. We present mid-IR spectral mapping observations of star-forming regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud obtained as part of the Spitzer Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (S4MC) project. These observations allow us to map the distribution of PAH emission in these regions and the measure the variation of PAH band strengths with local physical conditions. In these proceedings we discuss preliminary results on the physical state of the PAHs, in particular their ionization fraction.

We present the first semi-analytical model that follows the chemical evolution during the collapse of a molecular cloud and the formation of a low-mass star and the surrounding disk. It computes infall trajectories from any starting point in the cloud and it includes a full time-dependent treatment of the temperature structure. We focus here on the freeze-out and desorption of CO and H2O. Both species deplete towards the centre before the collapse begins. CO evaporates during the infall phase and re-adsorbs when it enters the disk. H2O remains in the solid phase everywhere, except within a few AU of the star. Material that ends up in the planet- and comet-forming zones is predicted to spend enough time in a warm zone during the collapse to form complex organic species.

Recent research has suggested that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) occur preferentially in low-metallicity environments, but the exact nature of this correlation is currently a matter of intense debate. We use the newest generation of the Starburst99/Mappings code to generate an extensive suite of cutting-edge stellar population synthesis models, covering a wide range of physical parameters specifically tailored for modeling the ISM environments of metal-poor galaxies and LGRB host galaxies. With our models, we generate optical emission line diagnostics, which will allow us to examine the ISM properties and stellar populations of a variety of galaxy populations in unprecedented detail. While accurately modeling low-metallicity galaxies still poses a challenge to these models, future improvements to these grids will have profound consequences for our understanding of metal-poor galaxies, their ISM environments, and the nature of their role as the hosts of LGRBs.

Bioastronomy: Search for Extraterrestrial Life was established as Commission 51 of the IAU in 1982. The objectives of the commission included: the search for planets around other stars; the search for radio transmissions, intentional or unintentional, of extraterrestrial origin; the search for biologically relevant interstellar molecules and the study of their formation processes; detection methods for potential spectroscopic evidence of biological activity; the coordination of efforts in all these areas at the international level and the establishment of collaborative programs with other international scientific societies with related interests. In 2006, Commission 51 was renamed simply Bioastronomy at the IAU General Assembly in Prague, and approved for the next six years, the default extension for an IAU Commission.

The interstellar gas of the Magellanic System is subject to the harassment of tidal interactions on galaxy-wide scales and stellar energy feedback on sub-galactic scales. H i surveys of the Magellanic System have produced spectacular images of the tidally displaced interstellar gas in the Magellanic Bridge and Streams. Multi-wavelength observations of the interstellar gas in the Magellanic Clouds have revealed gas components in physical conditions ranging from cold molecular cloud to hot ionized coronal gas. While stellar energy feedback is responsible for heating and dispersing interstellar gas, it can also compress ambient cloud to form stars. I will use Chandra, XMM-Newton, FUSE, HST, Spitzer, ATCA, and other ground-based observations to illustrate the interplay among massive stars, interstellar medium, and star formation.

We investigate the formation of neutral and singly ionized scandium lines in the solar photospheres. Extensive statistical equilibrium calculations were carried out for a model atom, which comprises 92 terms for Sc I and 79 for Sc II. Synthetic line profiles calculated from the level populations according to the NLTE departure coefficients were compared with the observed solar spectral atlas. Abundance determinations using the ODF model lead to a solar Sc abundance of between log ϵ⊙ = 3.07 and 3.13, depending on the choice of f values.

The formation and evolution of complex organic molecules in the early stages of solar-type protostars (Class 0 objects) is crucial as it sets the stage for the content in pre-biotic molecules of the subsequent proto-planetary nebula. In order to understand the chemistry of these Class 0 objects, it is necessary to perform interferometric observations which allow us to resolve the hot corino, that is the warm, dense inner region of the envelope of a Class 0 object, where the complex organic molecules are located. Such observations exist for only two objects so far, IRAS16293-2422 and NGC1333-IRAS2A and we present here Plateau de Bure interferometric maps of a third hot corino, NGC1333-IRAS4A, which show emission of the complex organic molecule CH3CN arising from a region of size ~0.8″/175 AU, that is, of the order of the size of the Solar System. Combining these high-angular resolution maps with prior single-dish observations of the same transitions of CH3CN indicates that extended emission is also present, and we investigate the implications for organic chemistry in hot corinos.

With the operation of LOFAR, a great opportunity exists to shed light on a problem of some cosmological significance. Diffuse radio synchrotron emission not associated to any obvious discrete sources as well as Faraday rotation in clusters of galaxies both indicate that the intergalactic or intracluster medium (IGM, ICM) is pervaded by a weak magnetic field, along with a population of relativistic particles. Both, particles and fields must have been injected into the IGM either by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or by normal star-forming galaxies. Excellent candidates for the latter are starburst dwarf galaxies, which in the framework of hierarchical structure formation must have been around in large numbers. If this is true, one should be able to detect extended synchrotron halos of formerly highly relativistic particles around local starburst or post-starburst dwarf galaxies. With LOFAR, one should easily find these out to the Coma Cluster and beyond.

We present limits on transit timing variations and secondary eclipse depth variations at 8 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC camera. Due to the weak limb darkening in the infrared and uninterrupted observing, Spitzer provides the highest accuracy transit times for this bright system, in principle providing sensitivity to secondary planets of Mars mass in resonant orbits. Finally, the transit data provides tighter constraints on the wavelength-dependent atmospheric absorption by the planet.

An increasing number of photometric observations of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters is seriously challenging the paradigm of GCs hosting single, simple stellar populations. These multiple populations manifest themselves in a split of different evolutionary sequences as observed in the cluster color-magnitude diagrams. Multiple stellar populations have been identified in Galactic and Magellanic Cloud clusters. In this paper we will summarize the observational scenario.

The presence of exponential bulges and anti-truncated disks has been noticed in many lenticular galaxies. In fact, it could be expected because the very formation of S0 galaxies includes various processes of secular evolution. We discuss how to distinguish between a pseudobulge and an anti-truncated disk, and also what particular mechanisms may be responsible for the formation of anti-truncated disks. Some clear examples of lenticular galaxies with a multi-tier exponential stellar structure are presented, – among them two central group giant S0s seen face-on and perfectly axisymmetric.

We find that the star formation is accelerated by the supersonic turbulence in the magnetically dominated (subcritical) clouds. We employ a fully three-dimensional simulation to study the role of magnetic fields and ion-neutral friction in regulating gravitationally driven fragmentation of molecular clouds. The time-scale of collapsing core formation in subcritical clouds is a few ×107 years when starting with small subsonic perturbations. However, it is shortened to approximately several ×106 years by the supersonic flows in the clouds. We confirm that higher-spacial resolution simulations also show the same result.

We examine oscillatory phenomena in a solar network region from multi-wavelength, observations obtained by the ground-based Dutch Open Telescope (DOT), and by instruments on the spacecraft Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO). The observations were obtained during a coordinated observing campaign on October 14, 2005. The temporal variations of the intensities and velocities in two distinct regions of the quiet Sun were investigated: one containing several dark mottles and the other several bright points defining the network boundaries (NB). The aim is to find similarities and/or differences in the oscillatory phenomena observed in these two regions and in different spectral lines formed from the chromosphere to the transition region, as well as propagation characteristics of waves.
