Understanding the process of star formation in low metallicity systems is one of the key studies in the early stages of galaxy evolution. The Magellanic Clouds, being the nearest examples of low metallicity systems, allow us to study in detail their star forming regions. As a consequence of their proximity we can resolve the molecular clouds and the regions of star formation individually. Therefore we can increase our knowledge of the interaction of young luminous stars with their environment. We will present results of multiwavelenghts studies of LMC and SMC massive star forming regions, which includes properties of the cold molecular gas, the embedded young population associated with molecular clouds, and the interaction of newly born stars with the surrounding interstellar medium, based on ASTE and APEX submillimeter observations complemented high sensitivity NIR groud based observations and Spitzer results.

We present new observations of the emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter TrES-4 designed to test the theory that the presence of temperature inversions in the atmospheres of these planets are correlated with the amount of radiation received by the planet. Our observations reveal that TrES-4 has an emission spectrum similar to that of HD 209458b, which requires the presence of an inversion layer high in the atmosphere and water emission bands in order to explain the observed features, providing additional support for that theory. We also present new observations of the thermal phase curve of HD 189733b at 24 μm, which we combine with our previous observations at 8 μm to examine how circulation in this planet's atmosphere varies as a function of depth. We discuss the relationship between the strength of the day-night circulation on both planets and their other observable properties, in particular their emission spectra.

We report on an ongoing investigation into a seismic calibration of solar models designed for estimating the main-sequence age and a measure of the chemical abundances of the Sun. Only modes of low degree are employed, so that with appropriate modification the procedure could be applied to other stars. We have found that, as has been anticipated, a separation of the contributions to the seismic frequencies arising from the relatively smooth, glitch-free, background structure of the star and from glitches produced by helium ionization and the abrupt gradient change at the base of the convection zone renders the procedure more robust than earlier calibrations that fitted only raw frequencies to glitch-free asymptotics. As in the past, we use asymptotic analysis to design seismic signatures that are, to the best of our ability, contaminated as little as possible by those uncertain properties of the star that are not directly associated with age and chemical composition. The calibration itself, however, employs only numerically computed eigenfrequencies. It is based on a linear perturbation from a reference model. Two reference models have been used, one somewhat younger, the other somewhat older than the Sun. The two calibrations, which use BiSON data, are more-or-less consistent, and yield a main-sequence age t⊙ = 4.68 ± 0.02 Gy, coupled with a formal initial heavy-element abundance Z = 0.0169 ± 0.0005. The error analysis has not yet been completed, so the estimated precision must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Stars form in embedded star clusters which play a key role in determining the properties of a galaxy's stellar population. A large fraction of newly born massive stars are shot out from dynamically unstable embedded-cluster cores spreading them to large distances before they explode. Embedded clusters blow out their gas once the feedback energy from the new stellar population overcomes its binding energy, leading to cluster expansion and in many cases dissolution into the galaxy. Galactic disks may be thickened by such processes, and some thick disks may be the result of an early epoch of vigorous star-formation. Binary stellar systems are disrupted in clusters leading to a lower fraction of binaries in the field, while long-lived clusters harden degenerate-stellar binaries such that the SNIa rate may increase by orders of magnitude in those galaxies that were able to form long-lived clusters. The stellar initial mass function of the whole galaxy must be computed by adding the IMFs in the individual clusters. The resulting integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) is top-light for SFRs < 10 M⊙/yr, and its slope and, more importantly, its upper stellar mass limit depend on the star-formation rate (SFR), explaining naturally the mass–metallicity relation of galaxies. Based on the IGIMF theory, the re-calibrated Hα-luminosity–SFR relation implies dwarf irregular galaxies to have the same gas-depletion time-scale as major disk galaxies, implying a major change of our concept of dwarf-galaxy evolution. A galaxy transforms about 0.3 per cent of its neutral gas mass every 10 Myr into stars. The IGIMF-theory also naturally leads to the observed radial Hα cutoff in disk galaxies without a radial star-formation cutoff. It emerges that the thorough understanding of the physics and distribution of star clusters may be leading to a major paradigm shift in our understanding of galaxy evolution.

We use Spitzer IRS spectra to determine the solid CH4 abundance toward a large sample (52 sources) of low mass protostars. 50% of the sources have an absorption feature at 7.7 μm, attributed to solid CH4. The solid CH4/H2O abundances are 2–13%, but toward sources with H2O column densities above 2 × 1018 cm−2, the CH4 abundances (20 out of 25) are nearly constant at 4.7 ± 1.6%. Correlations with CO2 and H2O together with the inferred abundances are consistent with CH4 formation through sequential hydrogenation of C on grain surfaces, but not with formation from CH3OH and formation in gas phase with subsequent freeze-out.

We present results of investigation of the off-equatorial circular orbits existence in the vicinity of neutron stars, Schwarzschild black holes with plasma ring, and near Kerr-Newman black holes and naked singularities.

Mass loss is a determinant factor which strongly affects the evolution and the fate of massive stars. At low metallicity, stars are supposed to rotate faster than at the solar one. This favors the existence of stars near the critical velocity. In this rotation regime, the deformation of the stellar surface becomes important, and wind anisotropy develops. Polar winds are expected to be dominant for fast rotating hot stars.

These polar winds allow the star to lose large quantities of mass and still retain a high angular momentum, and they modify the evolution of the surface velocity and the final angular momentum retained in the star's core. We show here how these winds affect the final stages of massive stars, according to our knowledge about Gamma Ray Bursts. Computation of theoretical Gamma Ray Bursts rate indicates that our models have too fast rotating cores, and that we need to include an additional effect to spin them down. Magnetic fields in stars act in this direction, and we show how they modify the evolution of massive star up to the final stages.

White dwarfs represent the endpoint of the evolution of the large majority of stars formed in the Galaxy. In the last two decades observations and theory have improved to a level that makes possible to employ white dwarfs for determining ages of the stellar populations in the solar neighborhood, and in the nearest star clusters. This review is centered on the theory behind the methods for white dwarf age-dating, and the related uncertainties, with particular attention paid to the problem of the CO stratification, envelope thickness and chemical composition, and the white dwarf initial-final-mass relationship.

IAU Division IV organizes astronomers studying the characteristics, interior and atmospheric structure, and evolution of stars of all masses, ages, and chemical compositions.

Solar filaments (or prominences) are magnetic structures in the corona. They can be represented by twisted flux ropes in a bipolar magnetic environment. In such models, the dipped field lines of the flux rope carry the filament material and parasitic polarities in the filament channel are responsible for the existence of the lateral feet of prominences.

Very simple laws do exist for the chirality of filaments, the so-called “filament chirality rules”: commonly dextral/sinistral filaments corresponding to left- (resp. right) hand magnetic twists are in the North/South hemisphere. Combining these rules with 3D weakly twisted flux tube models, the sign of the magnetic helicity in several filaments were identified. These rules were also applied to the 180° disambiguation of the direction of the photospheric transverse magnetic field around filaments using THEMIS vector magnetograph data (López Ariste et al. 2006). Consequently, an unprecedented evidence of horizontal magnetic support in filament feet has been observed, as predicted by former magnetostatic and recent MHD models.

The second part of this review concerns the role of emerging flux in the vicinity of filament channels. It has been suggested that magnetic reconnection between the emerging flux and the pre-existing coronal field can trigger filament eruptions and CMEs. For a particular event, observed with Hinode/XRT, we observe signatures of such a reconnection, but no eruption of the filament. We present a 3D numerical simulation of emerging flux in the vicinity of a flux rope which was performed to reproduce this event and we briefly discuss, based on the simulation results, why the filament did not erupt.

Extrasolar super-Earths (1-10 M⊕) are likely to exist with a wide range of atmospheres. While a number of these planets have already been discovered through radial velocities and microlensing, it will be the discovery of the first transiting super-Earths that will open the door to a variety of follow-up observations aimed at characterizing their atmospheres. Super-Earths may fill a large range of parameter space in terms of their atmospheric composition and mass. Specifically, some of these planets may have high enough surface gravities to be able to retain large hydrogen-rich atmosphseres, while others will have lost most of their hydrogen to space over the planet's lifetime, leaving behind an atmosphere more closely resembling that of Earth or Venus. The resulting composition of the super-Earth atmosphere will therefore depend strongly on factors such as atmospheric escape history, outgassing history, and the level of stellar irradiation that it receives. Here we present theoretical models of super-Earth emission and transmission spectra for a variety of possible outcomes of super-Earth atmospheric composition ranging from hydrogen-rich to hydrogen-poor. We focus on how observations can be used to differentiate between the various scenarios and constrain atmospheric composition.

We report on the statistical relationships between solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed during 1996-2007 inclusively. We used soft X-ray flares observed by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and CMEs observed by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission. Main results are (1) the CME association rate increases with flare's peak flux, fluence, and duration, (2) the difference between flare and CME onsets shows a Gaussian distribution with the standard deviation σ = 17 min (σ = 15 min) for the first (second) order extrapolated CME onset, (3) the most frequent flare site is under the center of the CME span, not near one leg (outer edge) of the CMEs, (4) a good correlation was found between the flare fluence versus the CME kinetic energy. Implications for flare-CME models are discussed.

Much of our knowledge regarding the ages of stars derives from our understanding of the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. The diagram is typically dominated by hydrogen burning main-sequence stars, which historically, have been used to establish our most fundamental knowledge of stellar ages and evolution. In this brief article, I highlight how deep ground and space based imaging can uncover the stellar remnants of these hydrogen burning stars, white dwarfs. We have followed up our initial discovery of several large white dwarf populations in nearby star clusters with multiobject spectrographs. The spectroscopy allows us to characterize the properties of the remnant stars (e.g., mass, temperature, and age), which are in turn used to shed new light on fundamental astrophysical problems. Specifically, we estimate the ages of the Milky Way disk and halo, provide the inputs needed to calculate the chemical evolution of galaxies, and re-iterate the important role of HB stars in producing the UV-upturn seen in elliptical galaxies.

Although we were happy to welcome over 20 new members at the Prague meeting, Commission 26 is still one of the smallest in the IAU. Notwithstanding its size, it continues to carry on an active and diversified program of activities. The results of the first complete survey for 6668-MHz CH3OH and 6035-MHz excited-state OH masers in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds are presented. A new 6668-MHz CH3OH maser in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been detected towards the star-forming region N 160a, together with a new 6035-MHz excited-state OH maser detected towards N 157a. We also re-observed the previously known 6668-MHz CH3OH masers and the single known 6035-MHz OH maser. Neither maser transition was detected above ~0.13 Jy in the Small Magellanic Cloud. All observations were initially made using the CH3OH Multibeam (MMB) survey receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope as part of the overall MMB project. Accurate positions were measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). In a comparison of the star formation maser populations in the Magellanic Clouds and our Galaxy, the LMC maser populations are demonstrated to be smaller than their Milky Way counterparts. CH3OH masers are under-abundant by a factor of ~50, whilst OH and H2O masers are a factor of ~10 less abundant than our Galaxy.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are cosmologically distributed, very energetic and very transient sources detected in the γ-ray domain. The identification of their x-ray and optical afterglows allowed so far the redshift measurement of 150 events, from z = 0.01 to z = 6.29. For about half of them, we have some knowledge of the properties of the parent galaxy. At high redshift (z > 2), absorption lines in the afterglow spectra give information on the cold interstellar medium in the host. At low redshift (z < 1.0) multi-band optical-NIR photometry and integrated spectroscopy reveal the GRB host general properties. A redshift evolution of metallicity is not noticeable in the whole sample. The typical value is a few times lower than solar. The mean host stellar mass is similar to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud, but the mean star formation rate is five times higher. GRBs are discovered with γ-ray, not optical or NIR, instruments. Their hosts do not suffer from the same selection biases of typical galaxy surveys. Therefore, they might represent a fair sample of the most common galaxies that existed in the past history of the universe, and can be used to better understand galaxy formation and evolution.

We investigate the molecular abundances in protostellar cores by solving the gas-grain chemical reaction network. As a physical model of the core, we adopt a result of one-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics calculation, which follows the contraction of an initially hydrostatic prestellar core to form a protostellar core. Temporal variation of molecular abundances is solved in multiple infalling shells, which enable us to investigate the spatial distribution of molecules in the evolving core. The shells pass through the warm region of T ~ 20–100 K in several 104 yr and falls onto the central star in ~100 yr after they enter the region of T > 100 K. We found that the complex organic species such as HCOOCH3 are formed mainly via grain-surface reactions at T ~ 20–40 K, and then sublimated to the gas phase when the shell temperature reaches their sublimation temperatures (T ≥ 100 K). Carbon-chain species can be re-generated from sublimated CH4 via gas-phase and grain-surface reactions. HCO2+, which is recently detected towards L1527, are abundant at r = 100–2,000 AU, and its column density reaches ~1011 cm−2 in our model. If a core is isolated and irradiated directly by interstellar UV radiation, photo-dissociation of water ice produces OH, which reacts with CO to form CO2 efficiently. Complex species then become less abundant compared with the case of embedded core in ambient clouds. Although a circumstellar (protoplanetary) disk is not included in our core model, we can expect similar chemical reactions (i.e., production of large organic species, carbon-chains and HCO2+) to proceed in disk regions with T ~ 20–100 K.

The pre-white dwarf pulsators of PG 1159 type, or GW Virginis variable stars, are in a phase of rapid evolution towards the white dwarf cooling sequence. The rate of change of their nonradial g-mode frequencies can be measured on a reasonably short time scale. From a theoretical point of view, it was expected that one could derive the rate of cooling of the stellar core from such measurements. At the cool end of the GW Virginis instability strip, it is predicted that the neutrinos flux dominates the cooling. PG 0122+200 which defines the red edge of the instability strip is in principle a good candidate to check this prediction. It has been followed-up through multisite photometric campaigns for about fifteen years. We report here the first determination of the rate of change of its 7 largest amplitude frequencies. We find that the amplitudes of the frequency variations are one to two orders of magnitude larger than predicted by theoretical models based on the assumption that these variations are uniquely caused by cooling. The time scales of the variations are much shorter than the ones expected from a neutrino dominated core cooling. These results point to the existence of other mechanisms responsible for the frequency variability. We discuss the role of nonlinearities as one possible mechanism.

A test field solution is constructed, describing the electromagnetic field around a Kerr black hole which is drifting in an arbitrary direction. An asymptotically uniform magnetic field is assumed with a general orientation (with respect to the rotation axis). Lines of force of electric and magnetic intensities are explored, as measured by an observer orbiting around the black hole (above the innermost stable circular orbit, ISCO) or freely falling (below the ISCO) down to the horizon. Magnetic null point is found.

We have derived a complete magnitude-limited sample of 440 Galactic open clusters in the solar neighborhood, with integrated V-magnitude brighter than 8 mag. This sample can be used to infer the present-day luminosity and mass functions of open clusters up to a given age; it can even be used to construct the initial mass and luminosity function (IMF, ILF) of clusters (defined as visible clusters with age 4 – 8 Myr). The high-mass end of the cluster IMF is a power-law with a slope of −2 or slightly shallower (−1.7) while the luminous cluster ILF has a power-slope of −1, in agreement with what is found for extragalactic clusters. Both distribution functions show a turnover, starting at 300 M⊙ and integrated magnitude −3 mag, respectively. The overall birthrate of clusters is 0.4 clusters per kpc2 and per Myr. The average present-day cluster mass is 700 M⊙, while the average initial cluster mass is 4500 M⊙. The difference of these two average masses indicates the high infant mortality and/or weight loss of Galactic open clusters (due to dynamical evolution).
