The study of variable phenomena (periodic, irregular or transient) provides a unique way to acquire knowledge about objects in our Universe. Currently, we are going through a rapid expansion of time-domain astrophysics. One reason for this expansion is the technological developments materialised in small to medium size observational projects such as HAT, OGLE, Catalina, PTF and upcoming very large projects such as Gaia or LSST.

In this article, we are focusing on the ESA cornerstone mission Gaia. This spacecraft will provide astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements for one billion stars. Among the existing and planned multi-epoch projects Gaia is unique because it will provide exquisite astrometric measurements for all objects it observes. We provide a brief overview of the literature concerning this mission and its expected contribution to variability studies.

Recently, the discovery of small unbound asteroid systems called asteroid pairs have revolutionized the study of small asteroid systems. Observations with radar, photometric and direct imaging techniques have discovered that multiple asteroid systems can be divided clearly into a handful of different morphologies. Simultaneously, new theoretical advances have demonstrated that solar radiation dictates the evolution of small asteroids with strong implications for asteroid internal structure. We review our current understanding of how small asteroid systems evolve and point to the future.

The Red Rectangle is a spectacular bipolar nebula centred around the eccentric evolved binary HD 44179. The nebula is rich in spectral signatures: it is the brightest source of the Extended Red Emission (ERE), of the Blue Luminescence (BL) as well as one of the brightest sources of mid-IR PAH bands. Moreover, and unique to this source, a plethora of narrow emission lines is detected on top of the diffuse ERE. Some of these molecular features show rotational contours which become narrower at larger angular separation from the central engine. Some converge to wavelengths and profiles of narrow DIBs. All these observations show that the Red Rectangle is a very rich laboratory to study active astrochemical processes within the nebula. We also address, but fail to answer, the question why this source is so unique among the many observed post-AGB binary analogues.

Doppler Imaging of starspots on young solar analogues is a way to investigate the early history of solar magnetic activity by proxy. Doppler images of young G-dwarfs have yielded the presence of large polar spots, extending to moderate latitudes, along with measurements of the surface differential rotation. The differential rotation measurement for one star (RX J0850.1-7554) suggests it is possibly the first example of a young G-type dwarf whose surface rotates as almost a solid body, in marked contrast to the differential rotation of other rapidly rotating young G-dwarfs and the present-day Sun. Overall, our Doppler imaging results show that the young Sun possessed a fundamentally different dynamo to today.

To search for variable radio sources, we used two well-known radio catalogs NVSS and FIRST, both providing fluxes at 1400 MHz. Cross-correlation enabled us to find 556,282 radio sources present in both catalogs. Using the 3σ criteria we distinguished 6,301 variable radio sources, and with certain limitations specified the 260 strongest radio variables. We cross-correlated these 260 sources with other catalogs at different wavelengths (APM, SDSS DR10, VCV-13, BZCAT, 2MASS, and WISE). As a result we obtained photometric data for optical, NIR, MIR and radio ranges for these 260 variable radio sources to study them in details.

We present a spectroscopic and photometric study of the interacting binary and Double Period Variable HD 170582 based on the analysis of the ASAS V-band light curve and our high-resolution spectra mostly obtained with CHIRON spectrograph at the 1.5m CTIO telescope.

We aim at modeling small groups of young stars such as IRS 13N, 0.1 pc away from Sgr A*, which is suggested to contain a few embedded massive young stellar objects. We perform hydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of molecular clumps orbiting around a 4 × 106 M⊙ black hole, to constrain the formation and the physical conditions of such groups.

We find that the strong compression due to the black hole along the orbital radius vector of clumps evolving on highly eccentric orbits causes the clumps densities to increase to higher than the tidal density of Sgr A* and required for star formation. This suggests that the tidal compression from the black hole could support star formation.

Additionally, we speculate that the infrared excess source G2/DSO approaching Sgr A* on a highly eccentric orbit could be associated with a dust enshrouded star that may have been formed recently through the mechanism supported by our models.

We have measured HI absorption distance to the youngest Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3. Absorption by known anomalous velocity features near the Galactic centre (GC) puts a lower limit on its distance from Sun as 10 kpc, 2 kpc further away from the GC. We have found a small diameter (1.6′) shell like structure G354.4+0.0, that shows polarised emission in the NVSS. Based on its morphology, angular size, HI distance and its spectrum between 1.4 GHz and 330 MHz, it is perhaps the second youngest SNR in the Galaxy that is expanding in a dense environment of an HII region surrounding it. Our pilot observation of the inner Galactic 4th quadrant within 337° < l < 354° with a fixed Galactic latitude of 0.37° has confirmed G345.1−0.2 as an SNR.

The problem of interaction of stellar pulsations with turbulence and radiation in stellar convective envelopes is central to our understanding of excitation mechanisms, oscillation amplitudes and frequency shifts. Realistic (“ab initio”) numerical simulations provide unique insights into the complex physics of pulsation-turbulence-radiation interactions, as well as into the energy transport and dynamics of convection zones, beyond the standard evolutionary theory. 3D radiative hydrodynamics simulations have been performed for several Kepler target stars, from M- to A-class along the main sequence, using a new ‘StellarBox’ code, which takes into account all essential physics and includes subgrid scale turbulence modeling. The results reveal dramatic changes in the convection and pulsation properties among stars of different mass. For relatively massive stars with thin convective envelopes, the simulations allow us to investigate the dynamics the whole envelope convection zone including the overshoot region, and also look at the excitation of internal gravity waves. Physical properties of the turbulent convection and pulsations, and the oscillation spectrum for two of these targets are presented and discussed in this paper. In one of these stars, with mass 1.47 M⊙, we simulate the whole convective zone and investigate the overshoot region at the boundary with the radiative zone.

We report on the detection of 36 and 44 GHz Class I methanol (CH3OH) maser emission in the Sagittarius A (Sgr A) complex with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). These VLA observations show that the Sgr A complex harbors at least three different maser tracers of shocked regions in the radio regime. The 44 GHz masers correlate with the positions and velocities of previously detected 36 GHz CH3OH masers, but less with 1720 MHz OH masers. Our detections agree with theoretical predictions that the densities and temperatures conducive for 1720 MHz OH masers may also produce 36 and 44 GHz CH3OH maser emission. However, many 44 GHz masers do not overlap with 36 GHz methanol masers, suggesting that 44 GHz masers also arise in regions too hot and too dense for 36 GHz masers to form. This agrees with the non-detection of 1720 MHz OH masers in the same area, which are thought to be excited under even cooler and less dense conditions. We speculate that the geometry of the 36 GHz masers outlines the current location of a shock front.

Magnetic fields have been hypothesized to inflate the radii of low-mass stars—defined as less than 0.8 M⊙–in detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs). We evaluate this hypothesis using the magnetic Dartmouth stellar evolution code. Results suggest that magnetic suppression of thermal convection can inflate low-mass stars that possess a radiative core and convective outer envelope. A scaling relation between X-ray luminosity and surface magnetic flux indicates that model surface magnetic field strength predictions are consistent with observations. This supports the notion that magnetic fields may be inflating these stars. However, magnetic models are unable to reproduce radii of fully convective stars in DEBs. Instead, we propose that model discrepancies below the fully convective boundary are related to metallicity.

The future space debris environment will be dominated by the production of fragments coming from massive fragmentations. In order to identify the most relevant parameters influencing the long term evolution of the environment and to assess the criticality of selected space objects in different regions of the circumterrestrial space, a large parametric study was performed. In this framework some indicators were produced to quantify and rank the relevance of selected fragmentations on the long term evolution of the space debris population. Based on the results of the fragmentation studies, a novel analytic index, the Criticality of Spacecraft Index, aimed at ranking the environmental criticality of abandoned objects in LEO, has been devised and tested on a sample population of orbiting objects.

Up to 10% of the total power output of star-forming galaxies is emitted in the infrared emission features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.2 μm. Here, I will review the spectral characteristics of these IR emission bands, their dependence on the local environment, the implications for the physical and chemical characteristics of the carriers, and their applicability as a diagnostic tool.

To study the radio properties of AGN, we cross-correlate and investigate Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog of QSOs and Active Galaxies (v.13, 2010) with a number of radio catalogs: NVSS, FIRST, GB6, 87GB, SUMSS, WISH, WENSS, and 7C. This catalog contains 168,940 objects with positional accuracy of mostly 1 arcsec, though many positions have larger errors. We use new cross-correlation software based on accuracy of each object independently. In this software we take into account errors for each source and take identifications with errors within 3 sigma. Altogether, we find ~16,000 AGN having radio detection in any of the listed catalogs. Using all data from radio catalogs, we derive a homogeneous sample of radio AGN. The sample allows accomplish several tasks, including study of the distribution of radio sources by activity types, differences in physical properties of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN, luminosity functions for various types of radio AGN, study of the q parameter by AGN types and its evolution, etc.

The LAMOST survey of the Galaxy, otherwise named LEGUE (LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) started in October 2012. In this talk, I will give an overview of the science plan and the current status of the survey.

We have observed 79 supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Urumqi 25 m telescope at λ6 cm during the Sino-German λ6 cm polarization survey of the Galactic plane. We measured flux densities of SNRs at λ6 cm, some of which are the first ever measured or the measurements at the highest frequency, so that we can determine or improve spectra of SNRs. Our observations have ruled out spectral breaks or spectral flattening that were suggested for a few SNRs, and confirmed the spectral break of S147. By combining our λ6 cm maps with λ11 cm and λ21 cm maps from the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, we calculated the spectral index maps of several large SNRs. For many remnants we obtained for the first time polarization images, which show the intrinsic magnetic field structures at λ6 cm. We disapproved three objects as being SNRs, OA184, G192.8−1.1 and G16.8−1.1, which show a thermal spectrum and no polarization. We have discovered two large supernova remnants, G178.2−4.2 and G25.1−2.3., in the survey maps.

Here we investigate whether the inability of the Geneva evolutionary models to predict a large enough WC/WN ratio at high metallicities (while succeeding at lower metallicities) is due to their single star nature. We hypothesize that Roche-lobe overflow in close binary systems may produce a greater number of WC stars at higher metallicities. But, this would suggest that the frequency of close massive binaries is metallicity dependent. We now present our results based on observations of ~100 Wolf-Rayet binaries in the varying metallicity environments of M31 and M33.

The dynamical evolution of short-period objects having perihelia at small heliocentric distances is discussed. We have investigated the motion of multiple-apparition members of the Marsden and Kracht sungrazing groups. The orbital evolution of these objects on timescales < 10 Kyr is mainly determined by the Kozai-Lidov secular perturbations. These objects are dynamically connected with high-inclination near-Earth objects. On the other hand, we have found several observed near-Earth objects that evolve in the same way, reaching small perihelion distances on short timescales in the past.

Fundamental parameters of 26 well-studied sharp-lined single early B-type stars in OB associations and in the field within a distance of ≤400 pc from the Sun are compared to high-precision data from detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs). Fundamental parameters are derived from accurate and precise atmospheric parameters determined earlier by us from non-LTE analyses of high-quality spectra, utilising the new Geneva stellar evolution models in the mass-range ~6 to 18 M⊙ at metallicity Z = 0.014. Evolutionary masses, radii and luminosities are determined to better than typically 5%, 10%, and 20% uncertainty, respectively, facilitating the mass-radius and mass-luminosity relationships to be recovered for single core hydrogen-burning objects with a similar precision as derived from DEBs. Good agreement between evolutionary and spectroscopic masses is found. Absolute visual and bolometric magnitudes are derived to typically ~0.15-0.20 mag uncertainty. Metallicities are constrained to better than 15-20% uncertainty and tight constraints on evolutionary ages of the stars are provided. The spectroscopic distances and ages of individual sample stars agree with independently derived values for the host OB associations. The accuracy and precision achieved in the determination of fundamental stellar parameters from the quantitative spectroscopy of single early B-type stars comes close (within a factor 2-4) to data derived from DEBs.

We present the design of a stellar spectropolarimeter to measure the magnetic field of point sources. The polarization module interfaces the Boller and Chivens (B&Ch) intermediate-low resolution (R ~ 500 − 4000) spectrograph to the 2.1-m telescope of the San Pedro Martir National Astronomical Observatory in Mexico. The module uses a Savart plate to split the beam into two orthogonal states of polarization and a quarter (half) waveplate to measure circular (linear) polarization. The module is mounted to the telescope and it feeds the spectrograph through a set of four fibers, two for the polarized star images and two for the spectrograph calibration lamp. The instrument will be capable of measuring polarization in spectral lines to determine the longitudinal and transversal fields in magnetic stars.
