The space element of the ground-space very long baseline (VLB) interferometer RadioAstron is a 10-meter radio telescope Spektr-R which was successfully launched in 2011. It covers four frequency bands from 0.3 to 25 GHz and provides baselines up to 350,000 km. This allows to study space objects with a resolution as high as about 10 microarcseconds. Fringes are found at all four bands of 92, 18, 6, and 1.3 cm. Science observations are ongoing. Early results of the RadioAstron AGN survey at extreme angular resolutions will be presented in the talk. In particular, AGN core emission is successfully detected at interferometer baselines up to 7.6 GLambda (or fringe spacing 27 microarcseconds) which is the current VLBI record. High radio brightness of AGN cores is found significantly above the known inverse-Compton limit. Implications to AGN jet emission models will be discussed. First results of RadioAstron space VLBI imaging of AGN jets will be also presented.

One of the key factors in explaining nature of DIB carriers is to find regularities in their spectrum. Such a regular set of DIBs exists within interval λλ 6770–6865 Å. A possible new sequence of weak DIBs between λλ 5910–5990 Å is presented here. The new sequence is clearly visible in high resolution spectra (R ≳ 100,000) of some hot, reddened stars. Wavenumbers' differences, or spacings, between the most strong bands have values ~35, ~40 cm−1, which are very similar to those, found for DIBs near 6800 Å.

The main objective of this work is to improve our understanding of young fast-rotating stars evolving from the Herbig Ae/Be class to the Vega-like one. We observed with the VEGA instrument on CHARA one object so-called 51 Oph that is probably in such an evolutionary phase, allowing us to measure a mean stellar radius for the first time for this star and to show that the Hα emission was produced in a Keplerian rotating disc. However, additional observations are needed to improve our (u,v) plan coverage in order to measure the flattening of this close-to-critically rotating star and to probe the inner region of its circumstellar gaseous disc. These studies will help to disentangle the gas and dust emission around this late young star and will finally improve our understanding of the planet formation conditions in the inner regions of protoplanetary discs.

Motivated by the problem of local solar subsurface magnetic structure, we have used numerical simulations to investigate the propagation of waves through monolithic magnetic flux tubes of different sizes. A cluster model can be a good approximation to simulate sunspots as well as solar plage regions which are composed of an ensemble of compactly packed thin flux tubes. Simulations of this type are powerful tools to probe the structure and the dynamics of various solar features which are directly related to solar magnetic field activity.

Given a parametrized model of the Galactic potential, the best-fit parameters can be obtained by maximizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence of the action distribution of a set of stars initially clustered in action space (e.g. stars in tidal streams). This method will allow us to map the Milky Way's gravitational potential by simultaneously fitting multiple tidal streams without requiring stream membership information. With 20 streams of at least 20 stars each, including observational errors consistent with predictions for Gaia, this technique recovers the input potential parameters to a precision of 10-60% and an accuracy of 10%. With all the observed streams in our mock stellar halo (about 40) that fit the error criteria, the precision improves to 10%.

Pre-main sequence (PMS) stars can become vibrationally unstable during their evolution to the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS). As they gain their energy from gravitational contraction and have not started nuclear fusion in their cores yet, their inner structures are significantly different to those of (post-) main sequence stars and can be probed by asteroseismology.

Using photometric time series from ground and from space (MOST, CoRoT & Spitzer) the number of confirmed pulsating pre-main sequence stars has increased significantly within the last years and allowed to find members of new classes of PMS pulsators. Apart from the well-established group of δ Scuti type PMS stars, members of the groups of PMS γ Doradus, PMS δ Scuti – γ Doradus hybrid and PMS slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars have been discovered. For five PMS δ Scuti candidates, space photometry has revealed that they only show irregular variability, but no pulsations.

The unique high-precision space data were combined with dedicated high-resolution spectra to probe the parameter space in the H-R diagram and study the properties of PMS pulsators in comparison to their evolutionary stage.

The Cygnus Loop supernova remnant serves as an excellent laboratory for the study of radiative and non-radiative shocks with speeds in the 150–450 km s−1 range. We present results on shock-excited emission and dust destruction based on Spitzer Space Telescope observations of two well-studied regions in the remnant, (i) a non-radiative shock filament along the NE limb, and (ii) the XA region, characterized by emission from bright radiative shocks.

We present our very recent results on the sub-mJy radio source populations at 1.4 GHz based on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South VLA survey, which reaches ~ 30 μJy, with details on their number counts, evolution, and luminosity functions. The sub-mJy radio sky turns out to be a complex mix of star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN evolving at a similar, strong rate and declining radio-loud AGN. While the well-known flattening of the radio number counts below 1 mJy is mostly due to star-forming galaxies, these sources and AGN make up an approximately equal fraction of the sub-mJy sky. Our results shed also light on a fifty-year-old issue, namely radio emission from radio-quiet AGN, and suggest that it is closely related to star formation, at least at z ~ 1.5 − 2. The implications of our findings for future, deeper radio surveys, including those with the Square Kilometre Array, are also discussed. One of the main messages, especially to non-radio astronomers, is that radio surveys are reaching such faint limits that, while previously they were mainly useful for radio quasars and radio galaxies, they are now detecting mostly star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN, i.e., the bulk of the extragalactic sources studied in the infrared, optical, and X-ray bands.

In this paper we present empirically derived dynamical models for the 55 Cancri and GJ 876 planetary systems.

We present the first results of a dedicated search for Diffuse Interstellar Bands that have profiles with FWHM > 6 Å. Broad DIBs have been noticed in past surveys using averages of multiple sight lines (e.g. Jenniskens & Désert, 1994), but careful detection, measurement, and cataloguing for individual sight lines has not been done since the pioneering work of Herbig (1995). We have initiated an observing campaign using the Apache Point Observatory in order to obtain low-resolution spectra to search for such broad DIBs and monitor their behaviour from star to star. A first sample of 21 stars with 0.3 < E(B-V) < 3.3 mag, along with 15 matched low-reddening stars, were observed with the APO/DIS B400 (R ~ 450) and R300 (R ~ 1000) gratings to obtain spectra having S/N > 500.

We report the results of our study of the fast line profile variability (LPV) (hours – few days) in the spectra of bright OB and WR stars. All spectra were obtained with 6-m and 1-m telescope of Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and 1.8-m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, Korea (BOAO). We detected both the stochastic LPV, connected with the formation of small-scale structures in the stellar wind and the regular LPV induced by the large-scale structures in the wind.

Polarimetry of the far infrared emission from magnetically-aligned interstellar grains is one of the best ways of studying the magnetic field at the Galactic center. We describe the HAWC+ instrument, under development for flight on SOFIA starting in 2015, which will provide a major advance in capability for these critically important measurements.

A knowledge of the three dimensional distribution of interstellar dust is critical in interpreting all observations of the sky, particularly in the understanding of the structure and morphology of our Galaxy. It has been much easier to map the integrated dust extinction through the Galaxy, which is needed in modeling extragalactic sources, but this yields an overestimate of reddening to Galactic objects. Massive surveys, such as Gaia, present both a problem in that the distribution of interstellar dust must be known in order to model the internal structure of the Galaxy and an opportunity in that multi-color data may be used to deconvolve the dust distribution. I will present the current state of the modeling, which is yet in its early stages.

We suggest the use of the area asymmetries of the Stokes V profile of a line sensitive to the Zeeman effect to diagnose variatios of the magnetic field along the line of sight in stellar atmospheres. This tool could allow to disentangle the magnetic topology of the observed stellar features in analogy to the solar case: a fibril topology as in plage and netwrok magnetic fields vs. a homogeneous and strong field as in sunspots. We also suggest the use of the Hanle effect as a means to observe weak global dipoles.

We investigate the physical properties of large-scale wind structures around massive hot stars with radiatively-driven winds. We observe Discrete Absorption Components (DACs) in optical He i P Cygni lines of the LBV binary MWC 314 (Porb = 60.8 d). The DACs are observed during orbital phases when the primary is in front of the secondary star. They appear at wind velocities between −100 km s−1 and −600 km s−1 in the P Cyg profiles of Hei λ5875, λ6678, and λ4471, signaling high-temperature expanding wind regions of enhanced density and variable outflow velocity. The DACs can result from wave propagation linked to the orbital motion near the low-velocity wind base. The He i lines indicate DAC formation close to the primary's surface in high-temperature wind regions in front of its orbit, or in dynamical wind regions confined between the binary stars. We observed the DACs with Mercator-HERMES on 5 Sep 2009, 5 May 2012, and 6 May 2014 when the primary is in front of the secondary star. XMM-Newton observations of 6 May 2014 significantly detected MWC 314 in X-rays at an average rate of ~0.015 cts s−1.

Studying star formation in spiral arms tells us not only about the evolution of star formation, and molecular clouds, but can also tell us about the nature of spiral structure in galaxies. I will address both these topics using the results of recent simulations and observations. Galactic scale simulations are beginning to examine in detail the evolution of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMC) as they form in spiral arms, and then disperse by stellar feedback or shear. The overall timescale for this process appears comparable to the crossing time of the GMCs, a few Myrs for 105 M⊙ clouds, 20 Myr or so for more massive GMCs. Both simulations and observations show that the massive clouds are found in the spiral arms, likely as a result of cloud-cloud collisions. Simulations including stars should also tell us about the stellar age distribution in GMCs, and across spiral arms. More generally, recent work on spiral galaxies suggests that the dynamics of gas flows in spiral arms are different in longlived and transient spiral arms, resulting in different age patterns in the stars. Such results could be used to help establish the main driver of spiral structure in the Milky Way (Toomre instabilities, the bar, or nearby companion galaxies) in conjunction with future surveys.

Using the Delingha 13.7 m telescope with a 9-beam SIS superconducting receiver installed, we carried out mapping of C18O and C17O J = (1 − 0) toward molecular clouds in the central molecular zone (CMZ) and in the halo of our galaxy. From the integrated intensity ratio of C18O to C17O, the isotope ratio 18O/17O ratio can be estimated, which is considered to be one of the most useful tracers of nuclear processing and metal enrichment. Here preliminary results are presented toward Sgr A, Sgr B2, Sgr C, Sgr D, and the 1.°3 complex in the CMZ and M+5.3–0.3 in the halo.

In the framework of the ERTBP, we study an example of the influence of secondary resonances over the long term stability of Trojan motions. By the integration of ensembles of orbits, we find various types of chaotic diffusion, slow and fast. We show that the distribution of escape times is bi-modular, corresponding to two populations of short and long escape times. The objects with long escape times produce a power-law tail in the distribution.

We report on turbulent dynamo simulations in a spherical wedge with an outer coronal layer. We apply a two-layer model where the lower layer represents the convection zone and the upper layer the solar corona. This setup is used to study the coronal influence on the dynamo action beneath the surface. Increasing the radial coronal extent gradually to three times the solar radius and changing the magnetic Reynolds number, we find that dynamo action benefits from the additional coronal extent in terms of higher magnetic energy in the saturated stage. The flux of magnetic helicity can play an important role in this context.

At very low frequencies, the new pan-European radio telescope, LOFAR, is opening the last unexplored window of the electromagnetic spectrum for astrophysical studies. LOFAR will deeply survey the northern sky from ~ 10 up to 240 MHz. In this contribution we briefly describe some of the capabilities of LOFAR and the surveys planned to study fundamental issues related to the formation and evolution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. We describe some of the challenges of low frequency observations with LOFAR and our progress in overcoming them. Further, we present some recent results from the ongoing imaging commissioning efforts. In the second part we discuss our studies of Low Excitation and High Excitation Radio Galaxies in the Boötes field and how LOFAR Surveys will help in studying their evolution.
