During the past three years the measurement of stellar radial velocities has formed an important part of the spectroscopic programme of most observatories possessing large telescopes. As observations are carried to fainter and fainter stars and the number of observable objects increases rapidly, a natural development has been the selection of special groups and types of stars, the radial velocities of which will aid in the solution of certain specific problems. Illustrations are the studies of the O, B and A type stars made at the Dominion Astrophysical, the Lick, and the Simeis Observatories, of the members of the galactic clusters at the Lick Observatory, and of the fainter Cepheid variables and early-type stars with strong interstellar lines at the Mount Wilson Observatory.

Window functions describe, as a function of orbital period, the probability that an existing planetary transit is detectable in one's data for a given observing strategy. We show the dependence of this probability upon several strategy and astrophysical parameters, such as length of observing run, observing cadence, length of night, and transit duration. The ability to detect a transit is directly related to the intrinsic noise of the observations. In our simulations of the window function, we explicitly address non-correlated (white) noise and correlated (red) noise and discuss how these two different noise components affect window functions in different manners.

Achieving high accuracy and precision in stellar parameter and chemical composition determinations is challenging in massive star spectroscopy. On one hand, the target selection for an unbiased sample build-up is complicated by several types of peculiarities that can occur in individual objects. On the other hand, composite spectra are often not recognized as such even at medium-high spectral resolution and typical signal-to-noise ratios, despite multiplicity among massive stars is widespread. In particular, surveys that produce large amounts of automatically reduced data are prone to oversight of details that turn hazardous for the analysis with techniques that have been developed for a set of standard assumptions applicable to a spectrum of a single star. Much larger systematic errors than anticipated may therefore result because of the unrecognized true nature of the investigated objects, or much smaller sample sizes of objects for the analysis than initially planned, if recognized. More factors to be taken care of are the multiple steps from the choice of instrument over the details of the data reduction chain to the choice of modelling code, input data, analysis technique and the selection of the spectral lines to be analyzed. Only when avoiding all the possible pitfalls, a precise and accurate characterization of the stars in terms of fundamental parameters and chemical fingerprints can be achieved that form the basis for further investigations regarding e.g. stellar structure and evolution or the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. The scope of the present work is to provide the massive star and also other astrophysical communities with criteria to evaluate the quality of spectroscopic investigations of massive stars before interpreting them in a broader context. The discussion is guided by our experiences made in the course of over a decade of studies of massive star spectroscopy ranging from the simplest single objects to multiple systems.

A basic-level summary is provided of work since late 1993 to control light pollution in Chile. The purpose of this article is to stimulate such work inside Chile and to promote good lighting in developing countries in general. Chile is selected as the case study because of its critical importance to optical and radio astronomy, and the related economic and cultural benefits for Chile and the world. Examples are presented in some detail in order to illustrate adjustments that have been made to accommodate local scientific, cultural and economic realities and to show that it is necessary to anticipate the issues involved in controlling light pollution several decades before it would otherwise become a problem. It is hoped that international organizations such as the IAU, the IDA and the CIE can soon promote programmes in Chile that can serve as pilot programmes for other parts of the developing world.

Evidence for magnetic surface activity among cool stars of low gravity is discussed.

In 2012, the International Astronomical Union (IAU), through its Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD), established the three Task Forces which drive global activities using astronomy as a tool to stimulate development. These Task Forces are: (i) Astronomy for Universities and Research; (ii) Astronomy for Children and Schools; and (iii) Astronomy for the Public.

We are engaged in a program to monitor radial velocity variability in proto-planetary nebulae (PPN). Observations are being made with the radial velocity spectrometer at the DAO, with a precision of ±0.5 km s−1. Radial velocity variability can arise from binary motion and/or pulsation in these post-AGB stars. The demonstration of a binary nature for some of these objects can have important implications for the understanding of their physical properties, and for the shaping of their circumstellar shells.

We discuss a model for polarization of pulsar radio emission, based on the assumption that waves propagate in two elliptically polarized natural modes. Some results from numerical simulation of single pulses are discussed with emphasis on circular polarization, microstructures and single pulse statistics.

Non-gravitational perturbations, regardless being many orders of magnitude weaker than gravity, hold keys to fully understand the evolution of small Solar System bodies. This is because individual bodies, or their entire groups, manifest traces of a long-term accumulated changes by these effects.

For meteoroids and small asteroids in the 10 cm–10 km size range, the principal non-gravitational force and torque arise from an anisotropic thermal emission of the absorbed solar radiation. Related perturbations of the orbital and rotational motion are called the Yarkovsky and YORP effects.

We review the most important Yarkovsky- and YORP-driven processes, in the Main Asteroid Belt. These include: steady and size-dependent semimajor axis drift, secular changes of rotational period and obliquity, efficient transport towards low-order resonances, interaction with weaker higher-order resonances, captures in secular and spin-orbit resonances.

Many independent observations can be naturally interpreted in the framework of Yarkov-sky/YORP models, like cosmic ray exposure ages of meteorites, current population and size-distribution of near-Earth objects, the existence of unstable resonant asteroids or the structure of asteroid families.

Throughout most of the Local Group, globular clusters (GCs) remain recognisable as extended objects in ground-based images taken in good seeing conditions. However, studying the full extent of the GC systems is challenging because of the large sky area that needs to be surveyed and recent years have seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of GC populations in nearby galaxies, thanks to large imaging surveys. At the same time, techniques for deriving detailed abundances from integrated-light spectra of GCs are maturing so that detailed comparisons of the chemical composition for GCs in different galaxies can now be made. Such comparisons may shed important light on the properties of proto-galactic fragments that were accreted onto galaxy halos. Nevertheless, our census of Local Group GCs probably remains far from complete, in particular at low luminosities and for very extended clusters.

Based on a simple thermodynamical argument, we proposed a cloudy model with a warm dust cloud deep in the photosphere. We showed, for the first time, that a single grid of model photospheres (800 ≲ Teff ≳ 2600 K) offers a natural explanation not only for the division of dwarfs cooler than M into the two distinct types L and T but also for the changes of the spectra and colors along the L – T spectral sequence.

We report results of a study of the ionized gas towards the Galactic center with radio recombination lines at cm wavelengths. Both the Green Bank Telescope and the Very Large Array were utilized to probe the kinematics of the ionized gas on a global scale for both diffuse and discrete sources within the inner 2.0° × 0.5° (l × b). A diffuse ∼0 km s−1 gas, a thermal flux continuum fraction exceeding 40%, and an asymmetry where ∼70% of the ionized gas is found at positive Galactic longitudes are the preliminary results briefly discussed here.

The TEDI (TripleSpec - Exoplanet Discovery Instrument) is a dedicated instrument for the near-infrared radial velocity search for planetary companions to low-mass stars with the goal of achieving meters-per-second radial velocity precision. Heretofore, such planet searches have been limited almost entirely to the optical band and to stars that are bright in this band. Consequently, knowledge about planetary companions to the populous but visibly faint low-mass stars is limited. In addition to the opportunity afforded by precision radial velocity searches directly for planets around low mass stars, transits around the smallest M dwarfs offer a chance to detect the smallest possible planets in the habitable zones of the parent stars. As has been the the case with followup of planet candidates detected by the transit method requiring radial velocity confirmation, the capability to undertake efficient precision radial velocity measurements of mid-late M dwarfs will be required. TEDI has been commissioned on the Palomar 200” telescope in December 2007, and is currently in a science verification phase.

MERLIN positions of 12 radio stars are used to link the provisional Hipparcos reference frame to the International Celestial Reference Frame. The accuracy of the link using these radio stars is 2.3 milliarcseconds. Further observations are planned to check the accuracy of the link in the future.

We have used Schwarzschild's (1979) method to study the variety of self-consistent solutions available to the family of triaxial “perfect ellipsoids” (de Zeeuw 1985). the time-averaged density at 240 points within the mass model is computed for each of 1065 orbits distributed regularly in phase space and covering all four major orbit families. the underdetermined linear system thereby defined is solved in two ways. First, Lucy's (1974) iterative scheme is used to find a “smooth” solution, lying in the interior of the (mathematically-allowed) solution space. Second, linear programming is used, with linear combinations of the x and z components of the total angular momentum as cost functions, to delineate the boundary of the projection of the solution space in the Lx — Lz plane. the above procedure is applied to 21 figures, with axis ratios, b/a and c/a, chosen at equal intervals of 1/8.

NGC 595 is, after NGC 604, the second most luminous H ii region in the Milky Way's neighbouring spiral galaxy M 33. Its Wolf-Rayet star content has mainly been unveiled by two different channels. On the one hand, the stellar population of NGC 595 has been resolved and its WR stars identified through online/off-line H ii λ4686 observations realised with the HST. Nevertheless, due to the limited number of filters used, this did not give any information on the WR spectral subtypes. On the other hand, spectroscopic observations of NGC 595, realised at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths, have enabled the determination of some spectral subtypes, but this time, the lack of angular resolution did not allow to resolve the whole population. Thanks to our photometric technique, based on five dedicated narrow-band filters, we present here a determination of the spectral subtypes of NGC 595 WR stars which for the first time combines high-angular resolution and high-‘spectroscopic’ discrimination capabilities.

We present here a brief summary of the currenly on-going IFU surveys of galaxies in teh Local Universe, describing their main characteristics, including their sample selections, instrumental setups, wavelength ranges, and area of the galaxies covered. Finally, we make an emphasis on the main characteristics of the CALIFA survey and the more recent results that has been recently published.
